This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

The matter of Wu Shengnan was just an episode for Du Heng; he didn’t think it would materialize. He even considered it merely Wu Shengnan’s wishful thinking.

During his weekend shift, he didn’t think about it again and had a comfortable two days on duty.

On Monday, after completing all routine work, Du Heng gave Wu Buwei and Xiao Li time off to focus on their review and exams. They were to return to work after their exams concluded later that week.

After seeing the two off, Du Heng was about to begin the day’s treatments but was stopped by Wang Lili as soon as he stepped out the door.

”What’s the matter?”

”Sign here.”

”What for?”

As Du Heng asked Wang Lili, he had already picked up a pen, ready to sign.

But when he suddenly saw the content of the document, he couldn’t help but stop. His brow furrowed, and he turned to Wang Lili, ”What’s going on?”

Wang Lili also sounded a bit helpless as she explained, ”Someone filed a complaint against Li Nating, claiming she administered Nutrition Express to a patient via infusion. I saw the complaint letter this morning; I’ve attached it.”

Are they crazy? Administering Nutrition Express via infusion?

”What are the specifics?”

”On Friday, before finishing work, Dr. Yu admitted a 77-year-old male patient with insufficient intestinal motility and prescribed a fat emulsion to supplement his nutrition. Yesterday, the patient’s daughter came to visit her father. After hearing his account, she submitted a complaint letter, stating that Li Nating was giving the patient Nutrition Express, calling it cheap and a way to cheat money from the old man.”

Du Heng was speechless. He couldn’t help but cover his face with both hands and rub it hard.

Damn it, anyone with a functional IQ and a brain that works properly would never say something like that.

Administering Nutrition Express? How on earth did she even come up with that?

If the manufacturers of Nutrition Express knew their product could be administered intravenously, would there even be a need for us to scam you out of your money?

”How did you handle it?”

”Right after the meeting, I immediately went to explain to the patient’s family. However, the family member who made the complaint had already left for work. Only the patient himself was there. I explained it to him and showed him an unopened bag of fat emulsion. I also used my mobile phone to search for information about fat emulsion online for him to see.”

”Did the patient understand?”

”He did.”

Du Heng pointed to the paper in his hand and asked, ”Since the patient understood, why is this still recorded as a valid complaint against Li Nating?”

”Li Nating apparently didn’t explain clearly when administering the infusion to the patient, which led to this complaint. Therefore, it’s recorded as a valid complaint.”

”Did you ask Li Nating if she explained it clearly to the patient?”

”Yes. Li Nating said she explained it clearly at the time, and the patient also said he understood.”

Du Heng didn’t question Wang Lili further. After a brief pause, he said, ”Have Li Nating come here. I’ll ask her.”

It wasn’t that Du Heng was trying to be difficult. If this was recorded as a valid complaint, Li Nating’s merit pay would be affected. More importantly, he didn’t want her to be unfairly accused, as that would damage her morale.

Wang Lili made a phone call, and Li Nating came down from the second floor to the traditional Chinese medicine clinic room. When she entered, her face was etched with a look of grievance.

Du Heng pushed the complaint form forward and said to Li Nating, ”This is a complaint against you, which I assume you already know about. Now, I just want to verify whether you explained the situation to the patient at the time, and how he responded.”

Li Nating said with a wronged expression, ”Before starting the infusion, I explained to the patient what medicine Dr. Yu had prescribed and what it was for. At that time, he said he understood. Then, when I took out the medicine, he asked why the liquid looked like milk. I explained it to him again, showed him the writing on the infusion bag, and told him that fat emulsion looks like this. He then said he understood, and only then did I start the infusion.”

Du Heng’s expression softened slightly. ”So, you did explain it to the patient, and he indicated that he understood?”

”Yes. Another patient in the hospital room was there at the time. He even joked that it looked like Nutrition Express and that the old man should just drink it directly. He can testify for me.”

”Were there no other family members with the patient?”

”No, I even asked. He said he was the only one at home; his son and daughter-in-law are out of town, and his grandson is still in school. Only his daughter is in Jinzhou and visits him from time to time.”

After hearing Li Nating’s explanation, Du Heng found it difficult to make a decision.

Signing the form was easy. But if it became a valid complaint, Li Nating’s merit pay for the month would be deducted, she would likely be excluded from the year-end appraisal, and her annual bonus would certainly be reduced.

But if I don’t sign, what if she genuinely was negligent in her duties? How would the other nurses view it? How would the other doctors see it?

In medical care, complaints are inevitable, especially with a large number of patients.

Du Heng was cautious. This was the first complaint since he took office, the first one even going back to the Li Qingde Era. He couldn’t afford not to be.

”Let’s go to the hospital room and see.”

Du Heng got up and headed to the hospital room upstairs, with Wang Lili and Li Nating quickly following.

After finding the old man, they saw he was receiving another fat emulsion infusion. Du Heng asked him, ”Sir, do you know what medication this is and what it’s for?”

The old man, who was receiving the infusion, seemed a bit drowsy. He mumbled, ”I don’t know. They said my gastrointestinal absorption isn’t good, so it’s to supplement nutrition.”

Du Heng glanced at Wang Lili. It was clear the elderly man had only absorbed half of Wang Lili’s earlier explanation.
