This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

This time, the Extraordinary Heart-saving Decoction was quite different from the one used for Li Qiuhua.

First, this patient’s condition was much milder than Li Qiuhua’s. Although they were both undergoing emergency treatment, this case was significantly less severe. Therefore, aside from the different applications of specific medicinal ingredients, the dosage of each ingredient was also less than what Li Qiuhua had received.

However, since it was still called ”Extraordinary,” the amount of aconite still had to exceed the specified dosage.

If this were at the Health Clinic, given his current position, he would only need to explain the situation to the patient’s family and have Gong Daoyang act as a witness; the medicine would then be administered. But now he was in the Municipal First Hospital, which was Zhou Yixian’s territory. Strictly speaking, Du Heng had no prescribing authority here, as he was outside his registered area of professional practice. Therefore, if he wanted to prescribe medicine, he had to obtain the consent of the family and the approval of the attending physician, Zhou Yixian. Even if Zhou Yixian were more cautious and had a smaller Gallbladder, he might still need to request the Dean’s approval. After all, using an overdose of aconite would make anyone’s heart pound.

”I plan to use the Extraordinary Heart-saving Decoction combined with the Minor Green-Blue Dragon Decoction, with 30 grams of aconite and 10 grams of ephedra... This house restores yang and stems desertion, induces sweating, and opens the exterior.” After Du Heng finished speaking, he glanced at the few people before him. ”I must first clarify that in this house, apart from the aconite which is used in an overdose, the other medicinal ingredients are all within the prescribed dosage. So, it’s your decision whether to administer it to the patient or not.”

The two family members didn’t understand what Du Heng meant. They didn’t even know what aconite was and could only turn to Zhou Yixian for help.

But Zhou Yixian was dumbfounded. The family members might not know this medicine, but he certainly did. As the Emergency Department Director of a Class A hospital, he was all too familiar with its characteristics. And it wasn’t just aconite; he knew about ephedra too. Poison! Both are poison!

He remembered that the specified dosage for ephedra was 1.5 to 10 grams; Du Heng was prescribing it at the absolute maximum limit. Although it was within the specified range, others would never dare to prescribe such a dose. The houses he usually saw listed only 1.5 or 2 grams; very few exceeded 3 grams. Aconite could be prescribed up to 15 grams, but since he began his career, he had never seen anyone prescribe more than 10 grams, let alone the current 30 grams. Du Heng isn’t just prescribing medicine for the patient; he’s prescribing trouble for *me*!

Zhou Yixian somewhat regretted inviting Du Heng. He never expected Du Heng to have such a big Gallbladder.

Seeing the family members’ bewildered expressions, Zhou Yixian could only explain it to them. When he spoke about the toxicity of these two drugs, the family members couldn’t help but become alarmed. Could this Du Heng be trying to poison their mother? was the first thought that flashed through their minds.

Du Heng remained silent, waiting for a decision from the two parties. However, looking at Zhou Yixian’s face, I know this won’t be so easy to get approval for, Du Heng thought. Although thirty grams of aconite is very little compared to the one hundred and fifty grams used for Li Qiuhua, it’s still far too much for others. So, I can understand Zhou Yixian’s discomfort and hesitation. Most importantly, now that I’ve said everything, the pressure is no longer on me.

The two family members were stunned into silence by Zhou Yixian’s words. They just stood there blankly, looking at each other, then turning to Zhou Yixian, then looking confusedly at Du Heng, over and over.

Looking at the expressions of the two family members, Du Heng felt a mix of emotions. Honestly, Li Qiuhua’s two sons were incredibly decisive back then, he thought. They agreed immediately after I finished speaking. But these two are completely paralyzed by indecision, wavering back and forth. If they don’t make a decision themselves and expect Zhou Yixian to take the lead, that’s simply not going to happen. No matter how you look at it, Zhou Yixian will never be the one to step up and make this call.

The continuous humming from the machines behind them frayed everyone’s nerves further.

Just then, the male doctor, who was the patient’s attending doctor, interjected, slightly relieving the pressure on Zhou Yixian. It was mainly because the stares from the two family members were becoming too intense.

”Doctor Du, this Extraordinary... Heart-saving Decoction, have you used it before?”

”Of course.”

”Was it used on Li Qiuhua?”

Du Heng raised an eyebrow slightly. ”You know Li Qiuhua?”

The male doctor looked a bit awkward. He had, after all, given up on a patient for whom a death notice had been issued, only for that patient to be saved by the man now standing before him. It was impossible not to feel awkward. But there was no room for embarrassment now. He could only bite the bullet and nod. ”Li Qiuhua was the patient I was in charge of resuscitating. She visited me just last week.”

”What a coincidence, she came to see me too,” Du Heng said with a small smile. ”She was saved using the Extraordinary Heart-saving Decoction. What do you think? The results were pretty good, weren’t they?”

The male doctor nodded again. ”Indeed, it was astounding. So, Doctor Du, for this patient... are you confident?”

What am I supposed to say to that? Du Heng wondered. Generally, in emergency treatment, one rarely gives a guaranteed prognosis. Otherwise, if something went wrong and they ran into difficult family members, they’d be in serious trouble.

Du Heng thought for a moment before saying, ”This patient’s condition is actually much milder than Li Qiuhua’s. For Li Qiuhua, I prescribed medicine with one hundred and fifty grams of aconite per dose, and she was revived overnight.”

Having said this, Du Heng stopped. He could offer the family some confidence, but he would never make any absolute guarantees.
