The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 263: Chapter 263 Prime Minister Arrives

Otherwise, how can one say Song Zhiyuan is a devoted son? The dignified Prime Minister even takes the trouble to handle small matters entrusted by his mother, such as securing a match.

Song Zhiyuan was moved by himself.

In fact, according to his true thoughts, since Yan Zisheng comes from a poor family without any assistance, finding a wife from a family with a better background would provide more support for his official career in the future.

However, since it was a request from his mother, he had also investigated the background of that Miss Wang and found her to be capable and straightforward. Having such a person as a wife could ensure peace and tranquility in the inner quarters. After all, one virtuous wife can benefit the prosperity of three generations. If the lady of the house is sensible, the man can proceed without worries.

As for assistance, he had high hopes for Yan Zisheng; at worst, he could be his own support in the future.

Of course, it also depends on whether he agrees or not.

As he walked to the front of the South Garden, it was not entirely quiet; faint sounds of an argument could be heard coming from inside.

Song Zhiyuan frowned, and the guard beside him said, ”Prime Minister, shall I call the door?”

Upon entering the courtyard, the sound of the argument came from Yan Zisheng’s room. His young attendant, Shanhe, was at the door, anxiously clenching his fists, eager to rush in.

Out of the corner of his eye, Shanhe saw Song Zhiyuan enter and widened his eyes, about to kneel and salute immediately.

Song Zhiyuan, however, raised his hand, placed a finger to his lips, and shook his head, signaling him to keep silent.

Shanhe’s heart skipped, but he didn’t dare to disobey, desperately wishing he could secretly transmit a message to the young master that the Prime Minister was here.

Transmit a message he could not, so he could only silently pray to Buddha for protection, hoping the young master wouldn’t be provoked by that ill-fated Wu Xiuquan and say something unpleasant for the Prime Minister to hear.

Song Zhiyuan stood right in front of the side-room door, listening to the argument inside.

”You, aren’t you proud to be favored by the Prime Minister? Surely you’re not thinking of becoming the Prime Minister’s son-in-law, are you? What a pity, no matter how talented you are, you can’t compete with not having a good background. The daughter of the Prime Minister’s Mansion wouldn’t be given to a poor wretch like you,” came Wu Xiuquan’s mocking voice.

”Brother Xiuquan, you’re drunk, go back and rest in your room,” Yan Zisheng advised softly.

”Pah! Yan Changsheng, stop pretending in front of me. I refuse to believe you haven’t coveted the second young lady. Too bad you’re not the son of the Duke Ying Mansion, hahahah, just a poor scholar,” Wu Xiuquan sneered.

Yan Zisheng said, ”Brother Xiuquan, please mind your words. The second young lady is already betrothed. Talking like this puts me in an unjust position and drags her into misery. The lady’s reputation is very important; do not gossip behind her back.”

”Look, acting noble again. Is this just what the ninth young lady of the Yongchang Marquis Mansion fancies? You even refused it, still playing hard to get? Even if she’s a concubine-born daughter, being the Marquis Mansion’s young lady, who are you to pretend!” Wu Xiuquan’s tongue was already slurred: ”Yan Changsheng, you’re just a pretty face, pretending to be cultured and refined, it’s so fake, what do you have that’s better than me, yet she fancies you, how could this be, how can it!”

”You’re drunk; let me help you back to your room.”

Inside, there was the sound of a chair being kicked over and Wu Xiuquan cursing profanities, unbearable to the ear.

The door opened, and the person inside met the eyes of Song Zhiyuan who was standing outside.

Yan Zisheng was stunned, instinctively letting go of Wu Xiuquan’s hand, a bit flustered.

Wu Xiuquan, upon recognizing Song Zhiyuan’s face, sobered up immediately, his legs giving way, kneeling down with a slurred, ”Prime, Prime Minister...”

He was finished, utterly finished.

Song Zhiyuan glanced at him faintly, slightly turning his head and instructing, ”Song Wu, take Scholar Wu back to his room to sober up.”
