Chapter 72: Chapter 72: City Sewer

Su Changxing swung his blade at a zombie rushing out of the hall, but the zombie suddenly dodged to the side, avoiding the attack.

”Hmm?”

He frowned and reversed his grip to deliver another strike, killing the zombie.

This felt very strange; zombies that seemed like puppets were suddenly learning to evade.

”Did that zombie just dodge?”

Huang Biao looked surprised, examining the dead zombie on the ground.

”Yes.” Su Changxing thought for a moment before saying, ”I’ve already noticed that these zombies are constantly being strengthened, and now it seems their intelligence is being enhanced too.”

”No wonder it feels a lot harder to kill these zombies.” Huang Biao cursed, ”Damn it, how are we supposed to survive like this? Won’t it be exhausting to kill even one zombie in ten days?”

In the bright hall, there were seven or eight zombies, which the two of them cleaned up in a few minutes before climbing over twenty floors up the stairs to reach the rooftop.

The wind was strong on the rooftop, the black coat flapping in the breeze. Su Changxing saw a U-shaped building with a huge shield emblem nestled among the layers of buildings, identical to the one the boy saw in his memory.

A despairing scene surrounded Shield Company; zombies were crowded tightly with no gaps in sight.

Seeing the shock on Su Changxing’s face, Huang Biao shrugged, ”See, this is why I advised you not to go there. There’s no angle with so many zombies, even if you wanted to.”

Su Changxing pondered, ”It’s indeed impossible to get through, but doesn’t the number seem a bit exaggerated?”

The situation was unexpected, disrupting his original plan. According to various clues, only by going to Shield Company could he have a chance to complete the task.

Moreover, this also related to the issue of zombie transformation. Currently, it seems that if this problem isn’t resolved, most humans will turn into zombies within thirty days.

Huang Biao looked at Su Changxing, who was deep in thought, and advised, ”Do you have a compelling reason to take such a risk? Often, staying alive is the most important thing, and it’s unnecessary to risk it for the Doomsday Game rewards.”

He suspected that Su Changxing must have received a special task, hence wanting to go to Shield Company, as mentioned in forum posts about special tasks.

Generally, special tasks come with special rewards, and he too had received special tasks but hadn’t planned to complete them.

Su Changxing snapped back and said, ”Well, it’s not just for the special task; this matter is significant. If possible, I still want to try to complete it.”

Huang Biao’s eyes gleamed; he was sharper than he appeared, patting his chest with a cheerful expression:

”If necessary, I can help you out. Although there are many zombies, getting through isn’t entirely impossible.”

Su Changxing raised an eyebrow and asked, ”What method?”

With a smile, Huang Biao pointed to a manhole cover on the street and said, ”Perhaps we can go through the sewer; it can at least get us near Shield Company.”

”It’s indeed an option.” Su Changxing agreed, ”But I don’t have experience progressing through sewers; do you?”

Going to a place like the sewer without experience would be very dangerous, with the biggest issue being getting lost.

”Haha, I don’t either.” Huang Biao paused and said, ”However, there’s someone at our base who knows about this. He was lucky not to die yesterday, and you know him.”

Su Changxing instinctively said, ”Zhu Wenwu? He knows about this?”

Feeling proud, Huang Biao said, ”Yes, we record their previous professions when recruiting. Zhu Wenwu used to specialize in city pipelines.”

Su Changxing nodded and said, ”Alright, let’s get him over to take a look. As long as we can get near the sewer entrance of Shield Company, I should be able to make a rush for it.”

After deciding, Huang Biao messaged Zhu Wenwu to come over, and he and Su Changxing continued toward Shield Company, planning to reconnoiter the terrain and find the nearest sewer entrance.

The further they walked along the street, the denser the zombies became, usually with four or five zombies attacking at once.

It was still manageable for the two of them.

But when they were about three thousand meters from Shield Company, advancing further became impossible due to the sheer number of zombies, with any action potentially triggering an Undead Tide.

”I’ll go down to check the situation.”

Su Changxing opened the manhole cover, climbing down the iron ladder step by step, feeling a slick, gooey substance covering it.

Descending four or five meters, the temperature around him suddenly dropped, bringing a damp and chilly feel, accompanied by the sound of dripping water.

”Tap~”

After climbing down eight or nine meters, Su Changxing landed on a layer of water; it was very dark below, almost devoid of light, allowing visibility for about four or five meters, and very quiet, as if isolated from the world.

Su Changxing hesitated for a while but didn’t advance. Despite having some night vision ability, it was too dangerous in such circumstances, requiring something for lighting.

He then sheepishly climbed back up.

Seeing Su Changxing climbing up, Huang Biao asked, ”How’s it down there, did you find anything?”

Su Changxing looked helpless: ”It’s too dark down there, can’t see anything. We need something for lighting.”

Huang Biao looked surprised: ”I thought you could see, seeing how you climbed down directly. This sewer seems deep; once you’re down, you disappear.”

Su Changxing nodded, ”About nine or ten meters deep, it seems like there aren’t any zombies down there. That’s good news.”

After more than ten minutes, Zhu Wenwu and another person named Huang Tao arrived.

Seeing the two squatting by the sewer entrance, Zhu Wenwu asked, ”Boss Huang, what’s going on?”

Huang Biao hadn’t revealed much in his message, only saying something important needed his attention.

Standing up, Huang Biao pointed to the sewer entrance and said, ”We’re thinking of using the sewer to get near that building with the shield emblem. You know about this; do you think it’s feasible?”

After thinking for a moment, Zhu Wenwu said, ”Theoretically feasible, but very risky, with sewers being complex and easy to lose direction.”

Su Changxing asked, ”Can you simulate the general direction of the sewers for us, so we don’t get lost?”

Zhu Wenwu immediately shook his head: ”I can’t do that; every city’s sewers are different, even their appearances vary greatly.”

He hesitated before saying, ”Brother Su, is it something important? I think unless absolutely necessary, don’t go in. There’s perhaps something strange down there.”

Seeing Zhu Wenwu’s hesitant demeanor, Huang Biao patted his shoulder and said, ”You have a way, right? Just say it.”
