Chapter 127: Chapter 127: Their Promise

Nina Jacobs never expected to run into Melanie Lawson here.

The little girl who lived next door to Chelsea Walsh and was also Ivan Lawson’s niece.

She had saved the girl’s life with a Healing Potion before.

And Melanie Lawson actually recognized her.

”I was looking for someone and accidentally came to the wrong place. What are you doing here? Where are your parents?”

Nina Jacobs glanced around.

The room wasn’t large, and there didn’t seem to be anyone else.

”My parents... They... they’re both dead...”

As if she couldn’t hold it in any longer, Melanie Lawson suddenly threw her arms around Nina Jacobs and burst into tears.

’Dead?’

’Was it because of the zombies?’

Nina Jacobs hadn’t expected this. She gently hugged Melanie, who only cried harder.

”My mom and dad... were killed by my uncle. SOB... I don’t have parents anymore.”

Melanie only dared to cry silently. Nina Jacobs froze.

’Her uncle?’

’Could it be Ivan Lawson?’

”Can you tell me what happened?”

Nina asked only after Melanie had cried for a while longer.

”My dad was taking us to find a shelter. On the way, we ran into Uncle Ivan. My mom asked him why he’d treated me like that before, and... and he pushed her under a car.”

”My dad jumped down to save her...”

Melanie sobbed as she spoke, her words broken and halting.

But Nina Jacobs understood everything.

In her past life, Ivan Lawson had claimed his brother and sister-in-law pushed him out of the car.

But in this life, the reborn Ivan Lawson had personally pushed them.

Leaving only Melanie Lawson behind.

”They said... they said I have a Superpower, so they wouldn’t let Uncle Ivan kill me. I was brought here to heal people every day.”

”I’ve healed so many people, but I couldn’t save my mom and dad... SOB SOB...”

Melanie’s eyes were filled with sorrow and hatred.

It was the first time Nina had ever seen such hatred on the face of a child so young.

”Don’t cry. I’m still here.”

Any words of comfort felt pale and powerless.

”You just saved me, didn’t you? You’ve already done so well.”

Nina Jacobs explained her own situation.

If it weren’t for Melanie, she likely wouldn’t have been able to escape today.

”I saved you?”

Melanie finally stopped crying.

”Yes. You wait here. How about I find a way to get you out?”

Nina asked.

But Melanie Lawson shook her head. ”I’m not leaving.”

”You want to stay here?” Nina asked in surprise.

”I’m going to avenge my parents. I’m going to kill that man with my own hands.”

Her small body was filled with stubbornness, and her words were resolute.

Nina Jacobs tried to persuade her, but Melanie was exceptionally insistent.

She also learned that Ivan Lawson wasn’t at the Quinn Group right now. He had been sent to City A.

She could only wipe away the girl’s tears and say:

”Alright. Then kill him.”

”But I need to make a promise with you.”

”A promise?”

Melanie looked at Nina, confused.

As much as she wanted to stay by Nina’s side, she couldn’t.

”Yes. When you finally get your revenge, you have to come find me. I’ll be waiting for you.”

Nina said.

She understood the desire for revenge all too well.

But she also worried that Melanie would lose the will to live.

After all, this wasn’t the kind of pressure an ordinary child could bear.

”Okay. I’ll come find you.”

Melanie Lawson held out her pinky, and she and Nina Jacobs made a promise.

”Can you stay with me for a little while?”

Worried that Nina was about to leave, Melanie couldn’t help but make the request.

”Of course. You protected me, after all. Right, I also have a gift for you.”

Nina Jacobs’s Invisibility Potion wouldn’t be usable again for another three hours.

She took out one of the ”foldable daggers” the system had previously gifted her.

The foldable dagger was only the length of a finger.

It looked like a keychain charm.

But by pressing a hidden button on the bottom, it would instantly extend into a sharp dagger.

It was more refined than an ordinary dagger, yet it could cut through iron like butter.

”So cool!”

Melanie’s eyes lit up.

”I trust you can protect yourself, but you still have to be careful.”

The size of the foldable dagger was perfect for Melanie.

And it could be easily hidden so no one would find it.

After giving one to Melanie Lawson, she still had one left.

”Thank you. By the way, is Chelsea Walsh with you? And Walsh?”

Seeing Nina reminded Melanie of the old days, and she couldn’t help but chat a little more.

”They’re all at the shelter. You’ll definitely be able to see them again someday.”

”Your friend... she’s probably being held at the incinerator.”

Melanie said.

’The incinerator?’

Nina had never heard of such a place.

Even the information from Shirley Lucas hadn’t mentioned it.

”That old woman needs frequent blood transfusions. I’ve seen some people... they’re drained of all their blood and then sent to the incinerator with the trash to be burned.”

Melanie lay beside Nina, her body trembling with fear as she spoke.

The old woman Melanie was talking about must have been Faye Quinn on the bed.

She could tell Faye Quinn was seriously ill, but she hadn’t realized that besides a Healer, she also needed blood transfusions to survive.

Nina Jacobs hugged Melanie, patting her back gently:

”Don’t be afraid. When you get to the base in the future, the people who do things like this will definitely be punished.”

”A new... base?”

As Melanie spoke, she gradually started to get drowsy.

Although she really didn’t want to sleep, she soon fell into a deep slumber.

「The next morning.」

Melanie Lawson woke from a peaceful sleep.

But the spot beside her was empty; Nina Jacobs was gone.

Just as she was starting to think last night was all a dream...

She looked down and saw a foldable dagger on a thin cord hanging around her neck.

Under her pillow was a whole box of chocolates.

It was exactly the same kind Nina had given her before.

Even her school bag had been filled with a stack of new, pink underwear.

”Nina...”

Tears started to fall again.

But when she touched the charm on her chest, her expression became resolute once more.

...

Nina Jacobs went to the new recruit training class as usual.

But Shirley Lucas was not there.

She guessed it was because Shirley had already passed the new recruit training period.

Sure enough, after the class ended, she received a message from Shirley Lucas on her communicator.

”I was just about to ask you out for coffee.”

Shirley Lucas was surprised to find that Nina Jacobs was living in a single dorm room.

”Did you need something?”

In the dorm, Nina Jacobs handed Shirley two cans of coffee.

”Yeah. Wayne Warner is most likely being held at the incinerator, but outsiders aren’t allowed in or out of there.”

Shirley Lucas said.

She had come to tell her about Wayne’s situation.

But even knowing where Wayne was, breaking in wouldn’t be easy.

”I understand. When are you planning to leave?”

Nina asked after a moment of thought.

”I’m taking the Superpower test in the next couple of days. Once I pass, they should send me out on a mission. I’ll probably leave then.”

Shirley Lucas replied.

Compared to their previous location, the Quinn Group had an additional Superpower test.

Superpower Users with stronger abilities would be designated as Superior Superpower Users and become priority development targets for The Alliance.

”Priority development targets?”

”Right. For example, you get protection during missions, you can receive treatment from a Healer if you’re injured, and you get a larger share of points after completing a mission, things like that.”

Shirley Lucas replied.
