After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret

Chapter 112: Chapter 112: Obtaining Map Fragments

Dinner was usually served early.

One reason was the large and disorderly crowd, and the other was that the shelter had an early lights-out.

When Nina Jacobs came down, she happened to see a few food servers with a cart, knocking on doors.

She stood silently beside a doorway.

The second the knock sounded, Mrs. Grant, Susan Warner, eagerly threw open the door.

”Why is it this stuff again today?”

Looking at the food on the server’s cart, Susan Warner asked with disgust.

”It’s all just watery porridge and pickled vegetables. My son is injured, and you won’t even give him a speck of meat.

You people upstairs are so damn stingy.

You must be keeping all the good stuff for yourselves.”

While Susan Warner was making passive-aggressive comments in front of the cart, Nina Jacobs quickly slipped inside the room.

”Ma’am, this is what all the injured fighters are eating.

Besides, is what happened with your son really something to be proud of?”

The food server rolled his eyes.

”What kind of attitude is that?

What’s not to be proud of? My son is a hero.”

Susan Warner pointed at the server and snapped.

”Still calling him a hero after he got fired?

Take it or leave it. If you don’t want it, then don’t eat.”

Not wanting to argue with the old woman any longer, the server immediately started to push the cart away.

”What are you standing there for? Hurry up and go after him!”

Jed Grant urged from behind the door.

’It’s free food; it would be a waste not to take it.’

’Even if we had our own food, we couldn’t let the shelter save on supplies.’

The server pushed the cart away quickly, and Susan Warner scurried after him.

Meanwhile, Nina Jacobs had already used the opportunity to sneak into Simon Abbott’s room.

Today was the day Simon Abbott, Liam Grant, and their team had gone out.

Although Liam Grant’s injuries hadn’t fully healed, he still insisted on going.

Renee Strong and Wyatt Jacobs were with them as well.

Nina Jacobs searched the room.

Simon Abbott’s room was spotless.

In fact, it was suspiciously clean.

The desk surface was completely bare.

Even stranger, the drawers were nearly empty too.

’Looks like I’ll be leaving empty-handed,’ she thought.

Just as Nina Jacobs was about to make a quick exit, she noticed the trash can behind the door.

Inside was a pile of shredded paper.

Or more precisely, a shredded map.

She picked out a few fragments and discovered several pin-sized holes on one of them.

They would be hard to spot if you weren’t looking for them.

’These must be pinholes from map pins.’

Nina Jacobs placed the fragments with the pinholes into her storage grid, then prepared to leave.

Mr. and Mrs. Grant were still busy with something in the other room.

”...So stingy, sending just this little bit every day.

There’s not a drop of oil in it. It’s worse than the pig slop back home.”

”Well, something is better than nothing.

If we don’t eat it, can’t we just feed it to the chickens and ducks?”

’Feed it to chickens and ducks?’

’No wonder that room’s door was shut so tight.’

If she listened closely, she could actually hear the clucking and quacking of chickens and ducks coming from inside.

Nina Jacobs shook her head, gently opened a crack in the door, and slipped out...

That evening, Simon Abbott and his team still hadn’t returned.

This worried the old couple sick.

Mr. and Mrs. Grant even went to Dawn Donovan, hoping she would send people to look for Liam Grant.

However, Dawn Donovan refused.

When Daniel Hale got back, Mr. and Mrs. Grant were still blocking the road, clamoring to see Justin Lawson.

But no one paid them any mind.

”The three teams that went out for supplies today also came back empty-handed.”

Daniel Hale took a bite of a coarse grain bun.

Since becoming a Superpower User, he’d noticed his appetite had increased.

The coarse grain buns weren’t sweet or fragrant, but once you got used to them, they had a unique flavor of their own.

”No supplies?”

Nina Jacobs felt something was wrong.

’The shelter’s supply points are all scouted in advance.’

’Logically, it shouldn’t have been a wasted trip.’

’What’s more, the three teams went to three different locations.’

’And none of them found anything?’

”Yeah. After we went through all the trouble of clearing out the surrounding zombies, too.”

”And...”

Daniel Hale paused mid-bite.

”Dad, and what?”

Leo Hale asked, noticing his father’s unusual expression.

”I’m worried our weapon supply might not be as sufficient as we thought,”

Daniel Hale said.

Artillery shells and weapons were all consumables.

With no way to manufacture more, the day would come when they ran out of ammunition and supplies.

The amount of weaponry consumed in the last battle had been far too great.

”So this battle really took a heavy toll on us.”

Sherry Renner worried about where she would find refuge if the shelter fell.

”It won’t come to that. We’ll find a way,”

Nina Jacobs said.

’The City D shelter isn’t that fragile. She was more worried about the new variables that hadn’t existed in her past life.’

The day before, Nina Jacobs had already completed Freebie Tasks 15 and 16.

Both of these system quests were One-Star Tasks.

The amount of supplies wasn’t large.

The location for Task 16 was a small minivan parked on the side of the road.

But Freebie Task 17 had yet to appear.

That night, Nina Jacobs summoned the system.

She wanted to know if the refresh mechanism for the Freebie Tasks was the same as in her past life.

[Freebie Task content is determined by the Host’s current location. If suitable task locations are available in the Host’s vicinity, high-star tasks will be prioritized for refresh based on the Host’s actual circumstances.]

After hearing the system’s reply, Nina Jacobs had her confirmation.

The mechanism was the same as in her past life.

There weren’t many supply points left for her to claim around the shelter.

This was to be expected.

After all, even building materials and furniture in the area had been gathered by the rescue teams to construct the new base.

Nina Jacobs pulled out a storage container and began taking various supplies out of her storage grid.

She was preparing to set up a market stall.

In addition to various brands of compressed biscuits, there were also clothes, shoes, and other assorted daily necessities.

However, after packing up her stall the next afternoon, Nina Jacobs was targeted by a few men.

”What’s your name? Are you a Space Element Superpower User?”

A man with a greasy face blocked Nina Jacobs as she was about to leave.

”My name is... Claire Warner.”

”I’m sold out for today. Please come back another day.”

Nina Jacobs really couldn’t think of a good name on the spot.

Under the guise of Claire Warner, she planned to present herself as having a Space Superpower.

”Sold out?”

”You must have plenty of good stuff left in your space, right? Take it out and let us have a look!”

Kevin Holden and his men had been watching this stall for several days.

The stall sold a wide variety of supplies every day.

He figured this woman, Claire Warner, was probably just being cautious, which was why she only sold a small amount of her goods each day.

She definitely had a lot more good stuff in her space.

”There’s nothing left. I don’t have anything else here.”

Claire Warner took two steps back.

But the more she backed down, the more excited Kevin Holden and his men became.

”Stop! What do you think you’re doing?”

A somewhat familiar voice called out, and the expressions on Kevin Holden and his men soured.

”Holden, it’s Wayne Abbott and his group. They’re not to be messed with.”

Nina Jacobs heard the man behind Kevin Holden mutter.

Kevin Holden nodded, shot Nina Jacobs a vicious glare, and then turned to face the newcomers.

”Well, if it isn’t Abbott. Me and the boys were just looking to buy some supplies,”

Kevin Holden said with a sycophantic smile.

”As long as you’re just buying supplies, that’s fine.

Watch yourself in the future. Don’t go scaring the young lady.

Otherwise... we regulars won’t let it slide.”

Wayne Abbott shot Kevin Holden a dismissive look.

He was followed by seven or eight men and women, all of whom looked quite formidable.

”Of course, of course.”

Kevin Holden led his men away, and only then did Wayne Abbott step forward.

However, he noticed that the woman, Claire Warner, didn’t seem frightened in the slightest. On the contrary, she looked completely composed.

”May I have a word in private?”
