Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Killing

”Lynch!”

The short, fat man stared in disbelief at the stubble-faced man lying in a pool of blood.

He knelt and checked, finding that the stubble-faced man was no longer breathing.

”Move your car, or I’ll kill you too.”

Nina Jacobs’s tone was icy, her gaze ruthless.

She hated it when people pointed guns at her.

”Okay, I’ll move it. I’ll move it right now.”

The short, fat man slowly stood up. Just as he was about to turn, he suddenly raised a gun hidden in his sleeve.

”Look out!!”

Daniel Hale’s face paled. He was aiming for Nina Jacobs!

Two gunshots rang out.

The short, fat man looked down in disbelief at the hole shot through his chest.

Meanwhile, Nina Jacobs had perfectly dodged his shot.

”You...”

’How could she possibly have dodged that?’

The short, fat man collapsed in disbelief, silenced forever.

[System Notification: Host’s actions will save a total of 109 humans in 3 days, 5 days, and 11 days, respectively. Triggering ”Selfless Savior” title. Reward: 109 bottles of ”Healing Potion”.]

Nina Jacobs was completely taken aback by the system’s notification.

’What’s going on?’

’How can killing someone come with a reward?’

[The individuals killed by the Host were villains.]

The system’s reply made Nina Jacobs understand immediately.

The stubble-faced man and the short, fat man would have gone on to harm more people. She had just happened to serve justice.

Everything happened so fast that Leo Hale hadn’t even processed what Nina Jacobs had done.

But Nina Jacobs had already moved forward to collect the weapons from the two bodies.

”You just... killed them?”

He could accept killing zombies, but Nina Jacobs had actually dared to kill people.

”What else? Let them kill us instead?”

Chelsea Walsh shot Leo Hale a look and even went forward to search the men’s pockets.

”Leo Hale, she saved us.”

Ian Chandler patted Leo Hale’s shoulder, then sincerely praised Nina Jacobs’s marksmanship.

Daniel Hale sighed.

”The world is different now. Those two looked like they were acting on a whim, but that’s the kind of person you have to fear the most.”

”Why?” Leo Hale asked.

There were only two of them. If their group had revealed their strength, the men surely wouldn’t have dared to touch them.

”Because those are exactly the type of people who act without thinking about the consequences. Once they get a taste of success, even more people will suffer.”

Daniel Hale had only just figured this out himself.

’It’s a competition of who can be more ruthless.’

Meanwhile, Nina Jacobs and Chelsea Walsh had made quite a haul.

Between the two dead men and the backpacks in their vehicle, they found over a dozen guns and ammunition.

There were also many sharp machetes.

Nina Jacobs had Ian Chandler store everything in his dimensional space.

”They might have accomplices,” Nina Jacobs guessed, looking at all the items.

Otherwise, those two wouldn’t have been so brazen.

”Then we should get going quickly.”

”Yeah. I’ll go check the back.”

Nina Jacobs opened the truck’s cargo doors and found many boxes of food and drinks inside.

”So much...”

Chelsea Walsh’s eyes went wide.

The truck’s cargo hold was full of everything from instant noodles and ham to rice and flour. It even had cooking utensils.

”Now we don’t have to worry about food.”

Leo Hale had already put the earlier incident out of his mind.

’So this is what it feels like to kill and loot.’

’Why does it feel so damn good?’

Ian Chandler wasted no time storing everything in his space.

After getting back in their vehicle, Nina Jacobs thought her actions might have scared Vera Coleman, since she had just killed two people.

But Vera Coleman was the one comforting her instead.

It turned out Vera Coleman was worried that killing for the first time would leave her with psychological trauma.

”I doubt it was her first time. Where else would she have gotten that gun?”

Leo Hale was skeptical. To him, Nina Jacobs seemed more like a veteran.

”I gave it to her. I didn’t expect she’d be so talented.”

Ian Chandler was happy that Nina Jacobs could use the gift he’d given her.

”Where did a little kid like you get something like that?”

”My mom gave it to me for self-defense.”

At the mention of his family, Ian Chandler’s expression softened.

”What kind of family gives their kid *that*?”

Leo Hale had always assumed Ian Chandler was just a middle school student who had escaped the chaos.

Seeing his disbelief, Ian Chandler just smiled and said nothing more.

The rest of the journey was surprisingly smooth.

Nina Jacobs seemed to know every major and minor road in City D. After taking a few detours, they reached the Western Suburbs faster than expected.

Although they did encounter danger a few times when zombies blocked their path.

”There really are a lot fewer zombies here!”

Daniel Hale noticed that, just as they had imagined, the farther they went toward the suburbs, the fewer zombies they saw on the streets.

These few alleyways were especially quiet.

”Don’t let your guard down,” Nina Jacobs warned.

The alleys in this old district were a tangled maze with too many blind spots. It might look clear of zombies at first glance, but one could be hiding around any corner.

Their vehicle could go no further when they reached the entrance of one alley. A wall had collapsed due to the acid rain, and they had to get out and clear the rubble from the road.

Nina Jacobs had Daniel Hale and Vera Coleman stay in the car while the other four advanced slowly, sticking close to the walls on either side.

”It’s so quiet here.”

The moment Chelsea Walsh finished speaking, a zombie with a reeking, gaping mouth charged out from the corner ahead!

It was an adult male zombie, and its strength was astonishing.

Chelsea Walsh tried to keep herself from trembling.

”You can try using your Superpower.”

Nina Jacobs’s voice reached her.

’Superpower?’

’My Thunder Element Superpower?’

While Leo Hale and the other two held back the male zombie, Chelsea Walsh focused her energy, channeling the power within her.

CRACKLE.

A bolt of electricity struck the ground in front of the zombie, instantly sending up a puff of white smoke.

Even though it missed, Chelsea Walsh was thrilled.

She was reminded of the times she had detonated test targets in the lab.

CRACKLE!

Another arc of electricity shot out, this time hitting the male zombie’s body precisely.

The paralyzing effect of the current rooted it to the spot, unable to move forward.

”Now’s our chance!”

Leo Hale swung his weapon forcefully at the male zombie.

”There are more zombies over there!”

Ian Chandler discovered that the seemingly quiet alleys were actually hiding quite a few zombies.

Drawn by the commotion, they all came shuffling out.

This time, Nina Jacobs didn’t hold back. She still hadn’t used the ”Heart of Strange Fire” Skill she had obtained earlier.

”Heart of Strange Fire” increased her Fire Element Superpower by 30%. Nina Jacobs threw a Fireball, and the zombie’s head immediately burst into flames.

THUD.

In just a few seconds, a charred head rolled onto the ground, the flames still burning.

”A one-hit kill?”

Leo Hale had to admit he was jealous.

”Don’t get bogged down in a fight, or we’ll be in trouble.”

Nina Jacobs killed several more zombies with her Superpower. Although it felt great, now wasn’t the time.

The metal doors of many houses in the alley were already being pounded on.

Hearing the agitated cries of the zombies, the group finally realized that many residents in this alley had already turned.

Daniel Hale drove the vehicle into the alley just in time. Nina Jacobs seized the opportunity to open a gate, and as she slammed it shut, they could still hear the zombies pounding on it from the outside.

”Quiet. Get inside, quickly.”

Nina Jacobs led everyone into the house and tightly shut the living room door and windows.
