Chapter 32: Chapter 32: The Acid Rain Stopped

Ian Chandler produced an exquisite ladies’ pistol, as if by magic.

It was clearly for a woman, given its small, delicate frame.

”A gift for you, Miss Jacobs.”

Ian Chandler’s words left Nina Jacobs stunned for a moment.

’The Ian Chandler from my past life was just like this, always mysteriously pulling all sorts of wonderful things out of his space to give to me...’

But Nina Jacobs remembered to play along. ”Where did you get this?” she asked, feigning surprise. ”Is it a magic trick?”

Ian Chandler beamed. ”From now on, Miss Jacobs, if you have anything important, you can leave it with me.”

”I can keep it safe for you in my space.”

As he spoke, he placed his hand on the nightstand, and it vanished in an instant.

”You have a space? How big is it?”

”About as big as the area from the front yard to the backyard.”

Ian Chandler was referring to the entire Hale Family villa, from the front yard to the back.

”You’re really incredible, then.”

Nina Jacobs praised him sincerely.

From what she knew, the initial space for an ordinary Space Superpower User was about the size of a single room.

Some were the size of a single dorm room; a better one might be the size of a shared room.

But someone like Ian Chandler could only be described as exceptionally gifted.

Nina Jacobs didn’t know where Ian Chandler had gotten the gun, but she accepted his kind gesture nonetheless.

”No matter what happens in the future, we’ll always be friends.”

”So you can always trust me, just as I’ll always trust you.”

Ian Chandler placed the nightstand back where it belonged.

”Aren’t you afraid I’ll betray you?”

Nina Jacobs raised an eyebrow. Ian Chandler’s trust stemmed from the fact that she had saved him.

’But people change so quickly. Ian is still young; he probably doesn’t understand that yet.’

”Of course not. Because you’re not insincere like some people, Miss Jacobs.”

Ian Chandler sat on the edge of the bed, smiling at Nina Jacobs, who was standing in the doorway.

’Insincere...’

’Is he referring to Wyatt Jacobs downstairs?’

Nina Jacobs understood at once.

This was Ian Chandler’s indirect way of warning her not to be deceived.

”Don’t worry. Even after you find your family, we’ll still be friends.”

As soon as Ian Chandler had woken up, Nina Jacobs had him try to contact his family by phone, but unfortunately, no one answered.

Since Ian Chandler could only remember that one number, they had no choice but to give up.

「Afternoon, the seventh day of the acid rain.」

The acid rain, which had poured for days and nights on end, finally began to lighten before stopping altogether.

People who had been hiding in sturdy buildings ran out, overjoyed.

Even from her room, Nina Jacobs could hear cheers erupting from all directions.

The internet was buzzing with activity.

Even Vera Coleman and Daniel Hale breathed a sigh of relief.

They never thought the disaster would end just like that.

”Hah, how stupid.”

A familiar voice reached Nina Jacobs’s ears.

Her Five Senses Enhancement was active; the voice belonged to Liam Grant.

”Yeah, let’s see how long their happiness lasts.”

”And that person going on about how ’man can conquer nature’? What a joke...”

Renee Strong laughed gleefully. The sound of a phone could be heard near them.

They seemed to be scrolling through videos.

Listening to their incessant mockery, Nina Jacobs felt an inexplicable rage.

In her past life, after the zombie virus broke out, countless people in Drakonia had died.

Within a month, the population of over a billion had been reduced to less than ten percent.

Those who survived didn’t have time to grieve; everyone was just struggling to stay alive in the aftermath.

Herself included.

They were the only survivors left.

But now was different. She was about to witness this disaster unfold, and besides feeling small and powerless, she was filled with a profound sense of sorrow and regret.

’Regret...’

A moment later, Nina Jacobs locked her bedroom door and took out the safe house inside the bathroom.

Inside the safe house, Nina Jacobs made a call.

”State Security Bureau? I’m looking for Warren Rhodes.”

Warren Rhodes. The old minister who, in her past life, had willingly tested the antidote on himself, sacrificing his life for Drakonia.

He was the person Nina Jacobs respected most.

Nina Jacobs didn’t know if the call would go through. She had hidden in the safe house because inside, neither satellites nor radar could track her location.

One could contact the outside world from within the safe house, but nothing could penetrate it from the outside.

Even if someone tried to pinpoint her location, it would be useless.

The operator’s response was reasonable.

”Ma’am, you can state your request to me. I’m operator 00923. I will record the details and report them to my superiors.”

Nina Jacobs was silent for a moment before speaking.

”I’m Warren Rhodes’s granddaughter. Please have him contact me within half an hour. It’s urgent.”

With that, she hung up.

She had found the phone during a mission, so there was no way for them to trace it back to her. Besides, she had just used a voice changer.

Now, it all depended on whether Warren Rhodes would take the initiative to contact her.

In half an hour, she would put the phone into her system’s storage. Once it was in there, it would be completely unreachable.

The minutes ticked by. Just as Nina Jacobs was about to give up hope of hearing from Warren Rhodes, a call from an unknown private number came in.

”This is Warren Rhodes. Who is this?”

Warren Rhodes did his best to keep his voice steady.

When the acid rain began, his granddaughter had been away at high school in another city. The family still hadn’t been able to contact her.

He had dispatched people to find her, but they had turned up nothing.

The call log indicated the number was from City D and registered to an elderly male, while his granddaughter’s school was a great distance from City D.

It was most likely an impersonator.

Yet, to his surprise, the caller admitted it.

”I’m sorry, Mr. Rhodes. I’m not your granddaughter, but it is imperative that you listen to what I’m about to say.”

Nina Jacobs took a deep breath and continued.

”First, the zombie virus is transmitted primarily through blood contact. Both scratches and bites can cause rapid infection.”

”Second, to kill a zombie, you must destroy its head. Attacking any other part of the body is ineffective.”

”Third, the transformation into a zombie is irreversible. Do not hold out any hope. They must be killed on sight.”

”Fourth, preserving your fighting strength is essential.”

”What exactly are you trying to say?”

Warren Rhodes was in his private office. Just today, he had received a series of urgent dispatches.

Many of them detailed cases of people developing rabies-like symptoms after the acid rain.

And now this androgynous voice on the phone was also mentioning ”scratches” and ”bites.”

On top of that, the caller knew about his granddaughter.

But just as he was about to press for more information, the other party hung up.

When he tried calling back, all he got was a dead tone.

’Could this be some kind of prank?’

But his intuition told him the caller wasn’t joking.

”Lewis, come in here.”

Warren Rhodes called for the department’s technical analyst.

”I need you to trace this number and find its location.”
