After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Visitors with Ill Intent

”Huh? Did Mom forget to tell you?

I’m pregnant with twin girls, so my belly is a bit bigger than it would be with just one.”

”...”

Nina Jacobs finally understood why the ”Selfless Savior” trigger had involved four people the other day.

Vera Coleman was pregnant with twins!

”Don’t worry, we’ll have four professional nannies to take care of them once they’re born. We’ve already arranged for a family doctor and an early childhood educator. It won’t be tiring for me, and especially not for you. You can just focus on doing whatever you want to do...”

They hadn’t originally planned on having more children, but then they found out it was twins.

When they learned they were having two daughters, they both hesitated.

Who could possibly say no to two sweet, adorable little girls?

”No wonder it’s so big.”

Nina Jacobs felt a swirl of complicated emotions.

’Will these two sisters, whom I’ve never met in either of my lives, really be able to be born safely into the apocalypse?’

「The sixth day of the acid rain.」

Nina Jacobs was jolted awake by a loud shout.

Leo Hale had discovered that strange things happened whenever he touched metal objects.

For example, spoons would bend, doorknobs would curl into circles, and even the showerhead had become misshapen.

”Son?!”

Daniel Hale rushed in with a pair of pliers from the toolbox, only relaxing when he saw that Leo Hale was unharmed.

”Dad, I think I... I’ve mutated.”

Leo Hale stared at his hands, his face filled with panic.

”Congratulations. You’ve awakened a Superpower.”

Nina Jacobs tossed her phone to Leo Hale. It was playing a video about a very small number of people developing rare Superpowers.

Although, based on the comments, nobody believed it.

At this point, the term Superpower wasn’t in common use yet.

But as soon as he heard the word ”Superpower,” Leo Hale’s despair turned to delight.

”I knew I wasn’t an ordinary person!”

Leo Hale exclaimed excitedly. He loved Marvel movies!

Just then, the sound of banging came from the front gate again.

The acid rain was still falling.

The disaster area across the country had expanded, and city streets had practically turned into a vast ocean.

The people outside seemed to be shouting something.

Nina Jacobs walked to the door and activated ”Five Senses Enhancement,” quickly making out the voices from outside.

”Damn it, these cowards are just hiding in their shells. What the hell are they doing in such a huge house?”

”This place has a backyard. If they really don’t open up, why don’t we just climb over from back there?”

”I’m in. Let someone else squeeze in with those refugees. If I have to deal with that crowd any longer, I’m gonna start killing people.”

”We finally caught a pretty one. In normal times, who would dare do something like this?”

”That kid is too stubborn. He almost pushed me into the rain to drown. Just wait, I’ll teach him a lesson later.”

’A pretty one?’

’Could it be Ian Chandler?’

Nina Jacobs couldn’t hear Ian Chandler’s voice, but the men had a point. If someone had a bit of skill, it wouldn’t be hard to climb in through the backyard.

”Uncle Hale, I want to open the gate and meet them.”

Nina Jacobs didn’t want to let this clue, which had delivered itself to her doorstep, get away.

”Why?”

Daniel Hale trusted that Nina Jacobs wouldn’t make a rash decision.

”Their intentions aren’t good, and they won’t give up easily.

It would be better to play dumb and catch them off guard, striking first before they have a chance.”

Daniel Hale was shocked by Nina’s words.

’Are these really the words of a recent graduate?’

”How come I didn’t hear what they said?”

Leo Hale had also tried to listen, and he could tell there were a few men outside, but the sound of the rain was just too loud.

”Your hearing isn’t good enough. They want to climb in through the backyard.”

Nina Jacobs said flatly.

”Looks like we’ve run into some tough customers.”

Daniel Hale thought for a moment and ultimately decided to open the gate.

Before that, however, Vera Coleman made him take off all his gold jewelry.

In a disaster, too many villains rose to the surface. It was better to hide what you could.

「Outside the courtyard gate.」

George Crawford was still cursing when the gate suddenly opened.

The men were still processing what happened when the video doorbell next to it lit up.

”Please, come in.”

No one came out to greet them, but someone was inside.

Knowing smiles spread across the men’s faces.

They drove their old, beat-up van straight into the courtyard.

”Rich people really know how to live. Even the gate is automatic.”

Mr Abbott said, watching the gate slowly close behind them.

”Everyone be careful. There’s something strange about these people.”

”We have a gun. What’s there to be afraid of?”

George Crawford tucked a pistol into the jacket under his raincoat, his tone filled with disdain.

The Hale Family’s courtyard was very large.

When the men finally reached the eaves of the house, Daniel Hale pushed the door open.

”Sorry, everyone. We have a pregnant woman in the house, so the situation is a bit delicate.

If you really need a place to stay, it’s not impossible.

There are rooms in the back house.”

As the saying goes, you can’t hit a smiling face. Daniel Hale’s unexpected hospitality made the men dial back their aggression.

”Oh, so that’s how it is. That’s easy enough to deal with.

Boss, what do you think?”

Mr Abbott asked George Crawford, all smiles on the surface.

As expected, George Crawford wasn’t satisfied. ”We’ve come all this way, aren’t you going to invite us in for a cup of tea? We haven’t eaten in two days.”

”Yeah, man. You see we’ve got nothing on us.

This...”

Orson Walsh put on a pitiful act. Seemingly left with no choice, Daniel Hale had to let the men inside.

The moment George Crawford stepped inside, he began sizing up the people in the room.

A pregnant woman, a well-behaved-looking girl next to her, and a young man who looked tall and strong but seemed weak.

They looked completely harmless.

”So sorry to impose, but I was wondering if you have anything to eat?”

Orson Walsh, who had an honest-looking face, played the good cop, complementing Mr Abbott and the others who had plopped themselves down on the high-end sofa.

”It’s just about time for lunch.

Why don’t we all eat together? It’ll be a chance to get to know each other.”

Vera Coleman suggested.

”Now that’s what I call forthright, ma’am. Don’t you worry, we won’t eat and stay for free.

The moment this rain stops, we’ll be on our way.”

Orson Walsh was very pleased.

”You’re injured?”

The men had taken off their raincoats, and Leo Hale noticed they all had acid rain burns of varying severity.

”It’s all that kid’s fault. If it weren’t for...”

”Old Wang.”

George Crawford cut Old Wang off before he could say any more.

”They’re just minor injuries. They’ll heal over time.

By the way, we have another brother in the van who’s sick.

Just prepare something for him to eat.”

Nina Jacobs was just bringing out a platter of food and her heart tightened when she heard George Crawford’s words.

’If it really is Ian Chandler, could it be that he’s already been...’

’Was I too late after all?’

”We have medicine in the house. Why not bring him inside to try some?”

Nina asked.

”No need. Let’s eat first.”

The aroma of the food was tantalizing, and Mr Abbott and the others were already eager to dig in.

”Hold on. Let the hosts eat first.”

George Crawford looked at the sumptuous feast on the table and managed to restrain himself.

’Everything’s going too smoothly. What if they put something in the food?’

Leo Hale’s heart skipped a beat. He instinctively looked toward Nina Jacobs, only to see she had already ladled a bowl of chicken soup and placed it in front of Vera Coleman.

Vera Coleman nodded, picked up her spoon, took a few sips, and then began eating the food in front of her.

”Hahaha, you gentlemen are too kind.

In that case, we won’t stand on ceremony.”

Daniel Hale and Leo Hale also started digging in.

Seeing the family eat like that, how could the other men possibly hold back? They immediately grabbed their chopsticks and started eating.
