The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 37: A Lesson in Chromatic Mastery

The silence in the stone clearing was profound, broken only by the soft crackle of the banked fire and the ragged breathing of the young deserters. Mun Lao’s offer hung in the air like the scent of ozone before a storm, a promise of annihilation disguised as purpose.

Jeong Jeong’s face was a mask of conflicting granite. The shock from the crimson flame had receded, replaced by the deep-seated instinct of a master bender, a commander, and a man who had spent years building walls against the very temptation this stranger represented. He would not be swayed by a mere display of strange power. Power without control was the disease of the Fire Nation.

“A purifying conflagration,” Jeong Jeong repeated, his voice regaining its dry, rasping edge. “More fire. More destruction. Dressed in new words. You speak of the past, but you offer the same old curse.” He took a step forward, his posture straightening to its full, imposing height. “You speak of control. Of riding the flame like a god. Let us see your control, then. Not parlor tricks of color. True control.”

He did not shout. He did not roar. He simply breathed in, a deep, centering inhalation that seemed to draw the very heat from the clearing towards him. Then he exhaled, and with a graceful, precise sweep of his arms, he bent.

It wasn’t an attack. It was a sculpture.

From the banked firepit, a stream of orange flame rose, not in a wild gout, but as a thin, liquid ribbon. It flowed through the air at Jeong Jeong’s command, smooth as silk. He wove it into a complex, three-dimensional lattice… a perfect, flaming cube that hovered in the center of the clearing. The heat was intense but focused, contained within the geometric form. Not a single errant spark leapt from it. The edges were razor-sharp, the surfaces perfectly flat planes of dancing fire.

He then clenched a fist. The cube collapsed inwards with a whoosh, condensing into a dense, white-hot sphere no larger than a grapefruit. It pulsed with contained energy, so bright it was painful to look at, yet it emitted no wild radiation, all its terrifying heat was locked perfectly within its boundaries.

With a final, flicking motion of two fingers, Jeong Jeong sent the white-hot sphere shooting in a straight line towards a bare patch of the stone wall. It struck, not with an explosion, but with a precise, searing hiss. When the light faded, a perfect, smooth, bowl-shaped depression had been melted into the rock, the edges glossy and vitrified. No cracks radiated outwards. No debris. It was the most surgical, controlled application of destructive fire Mun Lao had likely ever witnessed from a mortal.

Jeong Jeong lowered his hands. He wasn’t even breathing heavily. A faint sheen of sweat on his brow was the only sign of effort. He looked at Mun Lao, his faded amber eyes challenging. “That is control. That is fire as a precise tool. Not a wild beast to be ridden, but a disciplined extension of the will. Can your ‘past’ do better than that?”

The deserters stared, awestruck at their master’s display. This was the power they aspired to, not raw might, but absolute, unshakable command.

Mun Lao watched, his head tilted slightly. He didn’t look impressed. He looked… appreciative, like a maestro listening to a competent student play a familiar scale.

“Adequate,” he said, the word a gentle dismissal. “Precision. Restraint. You have learned to make a sword that will not cut its wielder. A worthy skill for a soldier who has lost his stomach for war.” He began to pace a slow circle around the clearing, his red robes whispering. “But you speak of fire as a tool. A servant. That is where you fail to understand its divinity.”

He stopped, facing Jeong Jeong and the group. “I am Mun Lao,” he announced, and the name itself seemed to draw the warmth from the air. “I walked this world when the Lion Turtles still gave their gifts freely. I was a brother-in-arms to the first man who ever held the flame you now treat with such cautious reverence. I have seen fire as creation, as life, as the very breath of the sun given form. I have seen it used to build civilizations, not just melt holes in rock.”

A stunned ripple went through the deserters. Ten thousand years? It was impossible. A myth. But the way he said it, with the weary certainty of stating his own height, made doubt shrivel in their minds.

“You wish to see control?” Mun Lao continued, a hint of his earlier, dry amusement returning. “Control is not limitation, Admiral. Control is understanding. It is speaking the flame’s native tongue.”

He raised his right hand, palm up, mirroring Jeong Jeong’s opening gesture. But where Jeong Jeong had pulled from the firepit, Mun Lao summoned fire from the air itself. With a soft sigh, a sphere of flame bloomed above his palm. It was the same deep, arterial crimson as before.

“You see one color,” Mun Lao said softly. “The color of raw, primordial essence. The first fire.”

He breathed on the sphere.

It changed.

The crimson bled away, transforming seamlessly into the familiar, vibrant orange of a healthy campfire, exactly matching the hue Jeong Jeong had used. It burned with the same heat, the same light.

“The color of common use,” Mun Lao mused. “The tool. The servant.”

He closed his eyes for a second, as if listening to a song only he could hear. The orange flame condensed, grew denser, brighter. Its color washed out, shifting through yellow to a blinding, pure white—a perfect twin to the sphere Jeong Jeong had created, hovering with the same contained ferocity.

“The color of focused will. Of maximum heat in minimum space. The soldier’s fire.”

He opened his eyes, and they seemed to glow from within. “But heat is a spectrum. Will is a gradient.”

The white sphere didn’t just turn blue. It evolved. The center became a searing, electric azure, so hot it was almost colorless, while the outer edges rippled with indigo and deep violet. It hummed now, a higher, more dangerous frequency than before. The air around it shimmered with distorted heat waves.

“The color of stars,” Mun Lao whispered. “Of the heart of a forge that can melt spirit as well as steel.”

Then, the impossible. The blue-violet flame began to cycle. It pulsed through the spectrum, flashing through emerald green, a brief, shocking rose pink, a deep burnt umber, a cool, twilight silver. Each color held for a heartbeat, each radiating a subtly different quality of heat, the green felt alive, vegetative; the pink felt gentle, almost healing; the umber felt ancient, like buried coal; the silver felt cold and sharp.

He wasn’t just bending the flame’s shape or intensity. He was bending its very nature, its vibrational essence, as easily as another man might flex his fingers.

Finally, he let the multicolored sphere drift upwards. With a series of minute, effortless flicks of his wrist, he divided it. One tendril became a dancing, crimson butterfly that fluttered on nonexistent wings. Another solidified into an orange lotus flower that bloomed and wilted in a cycle of seconds. A third stretched into a slender, white-hot blade of fire that held its edge perfectly still. A fourth swirled as a vortex of cool, silver flame that drew the warmth from the nearby air, causing a thin layer of frost to crackle on the ground beneath it.

Each manifestation was perfect. Each was utterly stable, an extension of his will as natural and unthinking as his own heartbeat. There was no strain, no focused expression. He was conducting a symphony where fire was every instrument, and he was the composer, the conductor, and the concert hall.

He closed his hand into a fist. The butterfly, the lotus, the blade, the vortex, all snuffed out of existence simultaneously, without a sound, without a wisp of smoke. The frost on the ground sublimated into mist.

The clearing was left in a silence so deep it felt deafening. The deserters were frozen, their mouths agape, their minds unable to process the chromatic miracle they had just witnessed. This wasn’t bending. This was… revelation.

Jeong Jeong stood as if turned to stone. His own masterful display seemed like child’s play in the face of this. He had spent a lifetime mastering control to prevent disaster. This being before him held such an intimate, god-like command over the element that disaster was simply another note in his song, to be played or not as he wished.

Mun Lao lowered his hand, looking at the former admiral. “You teach them to build a cage, Jeong Jeong. I am offering them the key to the universe. The question is not whether they have the spark. The question is whether you are brave enough to let them see how brightly it can truly burn.”

He smiled, and this time it held a terrifying warmth.

“Or are you content to let them practice their scales in the dark, forever?”
