The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 44: The Living Island

Disembarking onto the Lion Turtle was not like landing on a shore. It was an act of faith, of crossing a threshold from the world of man-made things into a realm of primordial scale.

The creature’s shell, where it met the water, was a sheer cliff of water-smoothed stone, crusted with barnacles and hung with curtains of deep-green kelp. Twenty feet above the waterline, the shell curved back, transforming into a slope of earth, soil, and the roots of massive, ancient trees.

They used grappling hooks launched from the ship’s ballistae. The iron claws flew in high arcs, biting deep into the thick, gnarled trunks of trees that overhung the shell’s edge. Ropes were secured, tested, and then a series of rope-and-wood gangplanks were slung across the gap, creating a swaying, precarious bridge from the deck of the Silent Shadow to the living earth above.

Zuko went first, moving with a focused balance. Katara followed, her waterbender’s instinct for flow keeping her steady. Toph simply walked across as if it were solid ground, her bare feet feeling every subtle shift in the ropes’ tension. Rin, Lee, Hinaro, and a team of Kyoshi warriors and sailors came next, carrying bundles of supplies, tents, and tools. Lastly, with careful assistance, Princess Yue crossed, her simple tunic and trousers a far cry from her royal furs, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and wonder.

Once the party was ashore, the real work began. Teams set to securing the ship. They drove heavy iron stakes, forged for this purpose, deep into the thick soil between tree roots. To these, they attached massive, tarred hemp cables and spare anchor chains, which were then fed back to the ship and wound tight on the capstans. The Silent Shadow was now tethered to the Turtle, a metal remora attached to a living leviathan, destined to follow wherever it went.

With the ship secured, Zuko turned his attention inward. He stood at the edge of the shell, looking into the forest that covered the Turtle’s back. It was impossibly vast. From the ship, it had looked like a large, forested hill. Now, standing on it, the horizon of trees stretched away until it was lost in mist and the gentle curve of the Turtle’s form. The air was different here, thicker, richer with the scent of damp soil, rotting leaves, and strange, fragrant blossoms. The sounds of the sea were muted, replaced by the buzz of insects, the calls of unseen birds, and the rustle of wind through leaves larger than a man.

“Spread out in groups of three,” Zuko ordered, his voice low, almost reverent in the quiet. “Mark your path. Look for fresh water, defensible ground, and signs of… anything that isn’t a tree or a bush. We meet back here in two hours. No one goes out of earshot.”

He led the main group, with Katara, Toph, and Yue following closely. Rin took another team east, Lee and Hinaro west.

The forest was a cathedral of ancient life. The trees were like pillars holding up the grey-green sky, their trunks wider than houses, their roots snaking across the forest floor in great, moss-covered ridges. Sunlight filtered down in dusty, slanting shafts. There was no trail. They pushed through ferns as tall as their shoulders, brushed past leaves that felt like cool, damp leather.

After an hour of walking, Katara shook her head in disbelief. “If I didn’t know… I’d think this was just an island. A really old, untouched island. I can’t even feel us moving.”

“That’s because it’s moving with us,” Toph said, her voice unusually subdued. She kept her hands out, her fingers occasionally brushing a tree trunk or stomping the ground. “The vibrations… they’re all one. The trees, the soil, the little scurrying things… it’s all part of the same deep, slow hum. It’s not like standing on a ship. It’s like… standing on a really, really slow heartbeat.”

She bent down, pressing her palms flat to the thick carpet of humus and moss. “The shell is down there. Way down. Five, six meters of solid rock and earth before you hit it. I can’t feel it directly. But I can feel everything on top of it.” She clenched her fists, and a section of the forest floor ten feet away rippled gently, a wave passing through the soil and roots. “It’s earth. I can bend it. But it’s… heavy. Old. It doesn’t want to move much.”

As they pushed deeper, signs began to appear… not of recent habitation, but of a past so distant it had become geology. A moss-covered line of stones that might have been a wall. A depression that could have been a foundation, now filled with ferns and black water. They found strange, silent animals, a six-legged lizard with bark-like skin sunning itself on a log, a flock of iridescent beetle-birds that flitted through the canopy without a sound.

Finally, they found a suitable site: a broad, relatively flat clearing near a small, crystal-clear spring that bubbled up from between the roots of a gigantic, hollowed-out tree. The ground was firm, and the clearing was ringed by ancient, sturdy trunks, offering natural windbreaks and defensive positions.

“Here,” Zuko said, his decision final. “This is base camp.”

As the others began to unpack tools and clear space for tents, Zuko walked to the edge of the clearing, looking up at the canopy. Somewhere far above, obscured by mist and leaves, the full moon would soon rise. Here, on the back of a Water Lion Turtle, beside a spring that tasted of ancient minerals, he would try to steal a thread of moonlight from a princess to ask a primordial god for the power to fight a darkness that was already here.

Toph stomped the ground in the center of the clearing, a satisfied smirk on her face. “Solid. Good roots. Nothing’s gonna cave in.” She tilted her head. “And the big guy below doesn’t seem to mind us being here. The hum hasn’t changed.”

Yue stood by the spring, dipping her fingers into the cold water. She closed her eyes, a faint, silvery glow, so subtle it might have been a trick of the light, seeming to emanate from her skin for a second before fading. “The water… it’s alive. It’s not just water. It’s… part of him. I can feel the same energy I felt with the water from the Spirit Oasis.”

Zuko nodded, his golden eyes reflecting the deep green of the forest. “That’s good, very good. This will work fine for our ritual when we need extra water.” They were guests in a living relic, preparing for a ritual from a forgotten age. The lines between earth, water, spirit, and ambition were blurring into a single, urgent purpose.

The Silent Island, with its ancient heartbeat, had accepted them. For now.
