The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 55: The Gift of the Deep

The climb down from the Lion Turtle’s shell was a silent, solemn procession. Zuko led the way, his movements precise and fluid, the new potency in his limbs making the descent feel effortless. Yue followed, her steps sure and quiet, the residual glow of the moon’s essence clinging to her like morning dew. They reached the shore where the Silent Shadow waited, its dark hull a stark contrast against the pearlescent mist of the Gyre. A metal chain ladder hung over the side.

As Zuko’s head cleared the gunwale, he found the entire forward deck awaiting him. Katara stood at the front, her arms crossed, worry and something else, resentment? etched on her face. Toph was beside her, bare feet planted wide, head tilted in that listening way of hers. Rin, Lee, Hinaro, and a handful of Kyoshi warriors formed a loose semicircle. The air was thick with unasked questions.

Katara spoke first, her voice tight. “The ritual finished hours ago. We saw the… the light. Then nothing. Why did it take so long for you to come back?”

Zuko hauled himself over the railing, landing lightly on the deck. He straightened, meeting her gaze. There was no defensiveness in his posture, only weary certainty. “The ritual… took more than was given. I needed rest. And when I woke, I needed to understand what had changed.” He flexed a hand, looking at it as if seeing it for the first time. “I tested my body. My limits. And I decided this,” he gestured between the ship and the vast, mossy cliff of the Turtle’s side, “should happen in the light of day. Not under a moon that has already had its say.”

His explanation was calm, factual, and left no room for further interrogation on the matter. The secrecy of his dawn realizations about the Avatar’s nature remained locked behind his eyes, a strategic dread for him alone.

He turned from Katara’s unsatisfied expression and walked to the ship’s prow, facing the immense, living island. He didn’t shout. He simply stood there, a figure of dark clothing against the grey sea and the greener stone, and spoke with a voice that carried not on volume, but on intent.

“Great One. The ritual is complete. The moon’s essence has been woven into my spirit. The vessel is tempered. I am ready.”

For a long moment, nothing happened. The mist swirled. The deep, sub-audible hum of the Turtle’s presence was the only reply.

Then, the water before the ship began to bulge. It was the same awe-inspiring, slow-motion emergence as before. The dome of water rose, shimmered, and collapsed in a curtain of foam, revealing the ancient, leonine head. Those luminous blue eyes, deep as abyssal trenches, opened and fixed upon Zuko.

‘I feel the change in you,’ the mental voice washed over them, a tide of ancient thought. ‘The cold light sits beside your sun-fire. It is unstable… but it holds. The Balance within you is a trembling thread, but it exists. Few mortals could have endured the weaving.’ The Turtle’s gaze seemed to pierce through Zuko, seeing the hollow potential, the vast new emptiness waiting to be filled.

“I do,” Zuko said, bowing his head slightly. “I ask for the gift of your element: Water. And with it, the understanding of the Energy that flows through all things, as was given in the time before time.”

‘The gift is not given lightly. It is a covenant. To bend water is to understand push and pull, to accept flux and change, to be as adaptable as the tide while being as relentless as the deep. The Energy is the root. To touch it is to feel the heartbeat of the world itself. It is a great weight. Your new balance must bear it.’

“I understand,” Zuko said. He then gestured beside him, where Yue had come to stand. “And I ask one more thing, Great One. Grant the same gift to her.”

A ripple of surprise went through the crew. Yue’s eyes widened.

‘The child already carries a fragment of Tui,’ the Turtle observed, its gaze shifting to Yue. ‘Her spirit is already fused with primordial water. To grant her bending would be to awaken what is already dormant within. It is… a natural conclusion.’ The great head inclined a fraction. ‘I see promise in this one. Not for conquest, but for stewardship. The moon’s child shall have the moon’s element. Yes.’

Yue’s breath caught. She looked from the Turtle to Zuko, a tumult of emotion in her eyes, gratitude, fear, dawning awe.

“Step to the rail,” Zuko said to her, his voice low. Together, they moved to the very edge of the ship, as close to the colossal being as possible.

The Lion Turtle moved. With a slowness that was both gentle and inexorable, it raised one of its massive forelimbs from the water. The claw was larger than their entire ship, crusted with barnacles and dripping with seawater. It did not inspire fear, but a profound, humbling reverence.

As it had done for Wan ten thousand years ago, and as Zuko had read in the most fragmented, secret Fire Sage scrolls, the Turtle did not simply shoot water at them. The gift was a transfer of understanding, of fundamental permission from the source of bending itself.

The gigantic claw came forward. One massive, blunted fingertip, glowing with a soft, blue-white internal light, touched Zuko’s chest, directly over his heart. A second fingertip, equally radiant, touched his forehead.

The moment it made contact, Zuko’s world ignited.

A torrent of knowledge that was not images or words, but sensations, flooded into him. The feeling of a river’s current. The patience of a glacier. The fury of a storm surge. The gentle lap of a pond. He felt the push and pull as a physical law of his own being. And deeper, beneath it, he felt the Energy, the vibrant, humming, interconnected life-force of the planet, the invisible river that flowed through rock, leaf, flame, and flesh. It was overwhelming, vast, a cosmic map inscribed directly onto his soul.

On the deck, everyone saw it. Zuko’s body went rigid. His head fell back, his eyes snapping open, but they saw nothing of the ship or the sky. They glowed, not with the gold of fire, nor the silver of the moon, but with a pure, blinding white-blue light. The same light radiated from the Turtle’s touch, enveloping him in a crackling, silent aurora. The air buzzed with a palpable, ancient power.

After three heartbeats that felt like an eternity, the light faded. The Turtle’s claw withdrew.

Zuko staggered, catching himself on the rail. He gasped, sweat beading on his brow, his whole body trembling with the aftershock of the infusion. He looked at his hands. He didn’t need to bend to know. He felt it. The water in the air around him, in the mist, in the very bodies of his crew, sang to him a silent, constant song. And beneath that song, he could feel the deeper, steady hum of the Spirit World’s proximity, the Energy thrumming in the Turtle’s ancient form.

Before he could speak, the Turtle’s claw moved to Yue.

The touch was the same: chest and forehead. But Yue’s reaction was different. There was no violent shock. Instead, she let out a soft, shuddering sigh, like someone finally remembering how to breathe. The glow that enveloped her was softer, more silver-blue, harmonizing with the essence of Tui already within her. It was less an awakening and more a unlocking. The light filled her, and for a moment, she seemed to shine with the same serene, powerful luminescence as the full moon. When the Turtle withdrew, she stood perfectly still, her eyes closed, a single tear tracing a path down her cheek. She opened her palms, and a sphere of water, perfect and clear, rose from the sea below without a visible gesture, hovering above her hand as naturally as her own breath.

The Lion Turtle’s great head regarded them both, its work complete.

‘The covenant is made,’ its voice resonated in their minds, final and solemn. ‘You carry the element of change, and the touch of the first art. Use it to mend the Balance. Or you will be unmade by it.’

With that, the colossal head began to sink beneath the waves, the glowing, water-marked patterns on its face fading into the deep green gloom, leaving only the silence of the Gyre and the stunned, breathless crew of the Silent Shadow staring at their prince and the princess, who now stood as the world’s first new true Waterbenders in ten thousand years.
