The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 36: The Admiral of the Ashes

The path Chey and his ragged band led Mun Lao down was not a path at all. It was a memory of animal tracks, a winding route through thickening forest that spoke of a desire to be forgotten. They moved in a tense silence, the only sounds their footfalls on damp leaves and the occasional distant hoot of an owl-hawk. The festive lights of Gansu were a world away, swallowed by the primeval dark.

Mun Lao followed, a silent, sanguine specter. His mind worked, fitting the pieces Chey had given him into the dismal puzzle of this era. Deserters. Not just any deserters, but Fire Nation army deserters who had fled because they believed the war was lost. Their cowardice was pathetic, but their reasoning was a fascinating symptom of the sickness he perceived. The mighty Fire Nation army, breeding not just conquest, but doubt. How far the embers had fallen from the roaring inferno of his age.

After nearly an hour of walking, the trees began to thin around a rocky outcrop. The air changed, it grew drier, warmer, carrying a faint, acrid scent that was familiar to Mun Lao’s core: the smell of concentrated heat, of stone stressed by fire, and the underlying ozone of disciplined, if diminished, power.

Chey paused at the edge of the clearing ahead, turning to Mun Lao with a look of deep unease. ”He’s… not what you expect. He’s harsh. He believes in discipline above all else. He might not welcome a stranger.”

Mun Lao’s lips curled. ”Discipline is the beginning of power. I welcome his harshness. Lead on.”

They stepped into the clearing. It was a natural amphitheater of weathered grey stone, sheltered by a high cliff face. Unlike the pathetic little camp where Mun Lao had found the boys, this place was ordered. Neat bedrolls were aligned against one wall. A small, efficient fire pit glowed with embers, the flames banked low and controlled. A stack of chopped wood was perfectly squared. And near the cliff face, his back to them, stood a man.

He was tall and lean, his posture rigid even at rest. He wore the tattered remnants of what had once been a high-ranking Fire Navy officer’s uniform, the deep red now faded to a rusty brown, the gold epaulettes tarnished and missing threads. His hair, more grey than black, was pulled back in a severe topknot. He was staring at a section of the cliff wall that was smooth and glassy, as if it had been melted and re-solidified.

”Master,” Chey called out, his voice respectful but tight with nervousness.

The man did not turn. ”You are late. The third form drill was to be completed by moon-high. Your failure implies a lack of focus, or a lack of respect for the schedule. Which is it?”

His voice was a dry rasp, like stones grinding together. It was devoid of the bluster Mun Lao had heard in a hundred mortal commanders. This was the voice of a man who had burned all his passion out long ago, leaving only cold, bitter ash.

”We… we encountered someone, Master Jeong Jeong,” Chey stammered.

At the name, the man Jeong Jeong went very still. Slowly, he turned.

His face was a landscape of deep lines and harsh angles, carved by sun, wind, and a profound, weary bitterness. His eyes, a faded amber, were the most striking feature. They held no fire, only a deep, banked heat of regret and a hyper-vigilant intelligence. They swept over his students, noting their disheveled fear, and then landed on Mun Lao.

Those eyes narrowed. They did not widen in surprise or fear. They assessed. They calculated the threat, the anomaly, the sheer wrongness of the red-robed figure standing so calmly in his sanctuary.

”Who,” Jeong Jeong asked, the single word flat and dangerous, ”is this?”

Mun Lao stepped forward, past the cowering boys. He met the former admiral’s gaze, and for the first time in ten millennia, he felt a flicker of something akin to… recognition. Not of the man, but of the type. This was not a celebrant or a weakling. This was a soldier who had seen the abyss and had chosen to walk away from it, carrying the abyss with him.

”I am a traveler,” Mun Lao said, his own voice losing its performative charm, becoming something older and drier to match Jeong Jeong’s. ”A student of fire, as are you. I found your… pupils… practicing in the woods. Their technique was an offense to the element. I corrected them.”

Jeong Jeong’s gaze didn’t waver. ”You interfered with my students.”

”I exposed their inadequacy. A service, I should think, for a master who values discipline.” Mun Lao gestured dismissively at the boys. ”They told me they are deserters. That they fled a losing war. That you teach them.”

A muscle twitched in Jeong Jeong’s jaw. ”I teach them control. The one thing the Fire Nation never understood. They see fire only as destruction, as a weapon for a foolish, endless war. I teach them that to wield fire is to walk a razor’s edge. One misstep, and you are consumed. They must learn respect before they learn power.”

”Respect,” Mun Lao echoed, tasting the word. He took another step closer, entering the circle of heat from the banked fire. ”You speak like a priest, not a soldier. An admiral of the great Fire Navy, hiding in the Earth Kingdom woods, teaching deserters to… respect the flame. Tell me, Admiral Jeong Jeong. Did you desert before the war was lost? Or did you see the loss coming and flee its consequences?”

The air in the clearing grew several degrees hotter. The embers in the pit flared, casting jumping shadows. Chey and the others shrank back.

Jeong Jeong’s expression did not change, but a terrible intensity gathered around him. ”I left when I saw that the war was not a path to glory, but to our own annihilation. Fire is life. It is energy. The Fire Nation turned it into death, and in doing so, they were burning their own future to cinders. I will not be a part of that. And I will not let these boys become mindless tools of that destruction.”

He finally moved, turning fully to face Mun Lao, his hands loose at his sides. ”Now. You will tell me who you truly are. You are no simple traveler. Your presence bends the heat in this clearing. You speak of fire with an accent I have never heard. Who are you, and what is your purpose here?”

Mun Lao smiled. It was a thin, joyless slash. ”An admiral who sees the truth of his nation’s folly. How rare. How… useful.” He ignored the question. ”You gather the rejected sparks. The ones the great engine deemed unfit or who grew a conscience. You seek to control them. To make their fire safe.”

”It is the only way,” Jeong Jeong said, his voice like iron.

”It is one way,” Mun Lao countered. ”The way of fear. The way of limits. You teach them that fire is a beast to be caged. I come from a time when fire was a god to be *ridden*.”

He lifted his hand, palm up. No dramatic pose, no shouted command. A small, perfect sphere of crimson flame coalesced above his palm. It was not the sputtering yellow of Chey’s attempt, nor the controlled orange of Jeong Jeong’s banked fire. It was deep, solid red, like a droplet of molten ruby. It hummed with a low, resonant frequency that vibrated in the teeth of everyone present. It gave off no smoke, consumed no air. It simply was, a piece of absolute heat given form.

Jeong Jeong’s eyes locked onto the flame. For the first time, true, unvarnished shock broke through his stoic mask. He had seen master firebenders. He had seen the Royal Family’s power. He had never seen this. This was fire that seemed to predate bending itself.

”What… what are you?” Jeong Jeong breathed, his doctrine of control forgotten in the face of the primordial.

”I am the past,” Mun Lao said softly, closing his fist. The crimson sphere vanished, leaving a momentary afterimage on the retina. ”And I am offering a future. Not of safe, caged embers. But of a purifying conflagration that will burn away the weakness, the compromise, the failed nations and their petty wars. Your students have the spark, Admiral. But you teach them to smother it. I can teach them to let it roar.”

He looked from Jeong Jeong’s stunned face to the terrified, fascinated expressions of the young deserters.

”You hide in the woods, teaching restraint to the desperate. A noble, futile gesture. I am offering a cause. A true purpose for the fire that the world has told them to be ashamed of. Not to conquer the Earth Kingdom for a decadent Fire Lord. But to help burn down the entire rotten structure and build something new from the ashes.”

He let the offer hang in the heated air, a temptation woven from ancient power and apocalyptic promise.

Jeong Jeong stared at him, a war visible in his weary eyes, the disciplined soldier who had renounced violence versus the firebender who sensed a power that made a mockery of his lifetime of careful control. The boys, Chey among them, looked from their master to the impossible red-robed stranger, hope and terror battling on their dirty faces.

The Admiral of the Ashes stood at a crossroads, and the path behind him was burning.
