The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 50: The Tale of Two Prodigies

The doors thudded shut, sealing the two of them in the cavernous, half-darkened war room. The only light came from the few braziers still burning, casting long, dancing shadows that made the golden maps on the walls seem to writhe.

Azula stood just inside the threshold, her posture deceptively relaxed, a smirk playing on her lips. Lu Ten remained behind the obsidian table, his hands resting on its dark surface. The silence was a third presence in the room, thick and volatile.

“So,” Lu Ten began, his voice echoing softly in the vast space. “The reports said you vanished at the North Pole. Presumed dead alongside our… traitorous cousin. You look remarkably alive for a ghost.”

Azula took a few slow, deliberate steps forward, her boots silent on the polished stone. “The North Pole was… educational,” she said, her tone light, conversational. “Turns out, ice burns almost as well as wood, if you apply enough pressure.” Her good hand flexed slightly at her side, a near-imperceptible gesture. “The Avatar, however, applied a different kind of pressure.”

Lu Ten’s sharp eyes didn’t miss the careful way she held her right arm. “I heard the battle was catastrophic. The Avatar entered a state of pure fury.”

“He didn’t enter it,” Azula corrected, her smirk fading into something colder. “Something else wore him like a puppet. An ancient voice. It didn’t just bend water, it commanded the ocean itself.” She paused, letting the memory flicker behind her eyes—not of fear, but of a furious, professional assessment. “It hit me with lightning not meant for mortals. If I hadn’t had… access to a special spiritual water from their oasis, my arm would be ash at the bottom of the sea. As it is…” She gave a slight, disdainful shrug with her left shoulder. “It’s merely a reminder.”

“A spiritual water,” Lu Ten mused, filing the information away. “And Prince Zuko? The reports were… vivid. Sister slaying brother with lightning. A fitting end for a traitor, if messy.”

Azula’s gaze met his, unwavering, golden fire meeting gold. There was no hesitation, no flicker of guilt or hidden knowledge. Just the flat, absolute certainty of a stated fact. “Zuko is dead,” she said, the words clean and sharp as a scalpel. “He betrayed the Fire Nation. He betrayed his blood. He chose the Water Tribe savages and a child Avatar over his own dynasty. I gave him the only fate a traitor deserves.”

She sold the lie with the same perfect conviction she had once used to sell her father on her own infallibility. It was the truth, as far as Lu Ten or anyone else needed to know.

Lu Ten watched her for a long moment, then gave a slow, acknowledging nod. “Duty served. However unpleasant.” He shifted his weight, the subject closed. “Now. A more curious mystery. You’ve been accounted for. My father mourned a dead nephew. The nation moved on. Where, dear cousin, have you been all these weeks?”

Azula’s smile returned, sly and knowing. “I could ask you the same question, *Fire Lord* Lu Ten. The heroic prince, fallen at Ba Sing Se. A funeral with full honors. An urn placed in the crypt. And yet, here you stand. It seems death is a popular career change in our family.”

A faint, humorless smile touched Lu Ten’s lips. “A necessary deception. Orchestrated by me so that it would motivate father, that he could ascend the throne. He believed the people would never accept him while the glorious, martyred Crown Prince Iroh and his heroic son still lived in their hearts. So, I died. A tragic casualty of war. And he was free to take what was rightfully his.”

“And yet,” Azula purred, taking another step closer, circling the table like a shark, “he didn’t take it, did he? He faltered. He came home a broken man, weeping over his lost son and his lost siege. He let the throne slip through his fingers… to my father.”

“My father was weak,” Lu Ten stated, no anger in his voice, only a cold, analytical disappointment. “He loved an idea of peace more than the reality of power. He gave the Dragon Throne to his pathetic little brother, and look what Ozai wrought: a century of war that ended not in victory, but in the whimpering retreat I’ve just had to command.”

“But the stronger of the siblings took it in the end, didn’t they?” Azula said, her voice a silken trap. “You saw the weakness, you waited, and you struck. Just like I would have. The strong rule. The weak… become lessons.”

Lu Ten’s eyes glinted. “You speak of strength. Of natural gifts. Everyone knew my father was the prodigy of his generation. The better firebender. The one blessed by Agni.” He let his gaze sweep over her, assessing. “Just as everyone knew you were the gifted one. The prodigy. Far beyond your brother.”

Azula’s chin lifted, pride a palpable heat around her. “There has never been a firebender more prodigious than me,” she declared, the statement a simple, unassailable fact of her universe.

Lu Ten’s smirk returned, wider this time, edged with something dark and knowing. “Oh, Azula,” he said, his voice dropping to a near whisper that seemed to suck the warmth from the room. “You have no idea of the monsters in the past. The true masters of the flame whose names are dust. You are not even the most prodigious one in this room.”

The air crackled.

It wasn’t a metaphor. Tiny, visible sparks of static electricity leapt between the metal fixtures. The temperature in the room spiked suddenly, unbearably, the heat pressing down like a physical weight. The few remaining braziers flared, their flames stretching toward the ceiling. The tension was a coiled serpent, ready to strike.

Azula didn’t flinch. The heat was her element. But her eyes narrowed, the golden irises contracting to pinpricks. The challenge hung between them, thick and suffocating.

A full minute of silence passed, broken only by the pop and hiss of the over-stressed flames. The shadows on Lu Ten’s face deepened.

“If I could defeat your father,” Lu Ten said slowly, each word measured and heavy, “and temporarily strip the greatest firebender of his bending… what do you think you could possibly do to me?”

The gauntlet was thrown. Not for the throne, not yet but for the title he had just implicitly claimed: the greatest firebender alive.

Azula’s lips peeled back from her teeth in something that wasn’t a smile. “Just because your flames are black,” she hissed, “you think they’re better than mine?”

She didn’t wait for an answer. She raised her right hand, palm up. With a soft, precise whoosh, a sphere of fire bloomed above it. But it wasn’t orange. It wasn’t red.

It was a perfect, searing, electric blue.

The azure flame danced, contained, humming with a ferocious, concentrated heat that made the air around it waver. It was her signature. Her proof. The mark of a prodigy.

Lu Ten’s eyes widened, not with fear, but with a profound, almost scholarly fascination. He leaned forward slightly. “I had heard the rumors. The Princess’s blue fire. But to see it with my own eyes… it is unbelievable.”

He lifted his own right hand, mirroring her gesture. Above his palm, a small, controlled flame ignited. It was normal at first, vibrant orange and red, fluttering calmly.

“Like I said, Azula,” he murmured, his gaze fixed on his own flame, then flicking up to meet hers. “My little cousin… you’re not even the best prodigy in the room.”

As he finished speaking, the orange flame changed.

It didn’t shift gradually. One second it was ordinary fire; the next, it was the exact same shade of searing, perfect, electric blue as the sphere hovering over Azula’s hand. Identical in hue, in intensity, in the terrifying, refined fury it radiated.

Azula’s composure shattered.

Her eyes flew wide. The blue flame in her own hand flickered, a tremor of pure, shocked disbelief running through her control. It was impossible. The blue fire was hers. It was the product of a lifetime of obsessive perfection, of heat and control so absolute it transcended the spectrum. It was her birthright.

And he had just replicated it with a thought.

The tension snapped from a challenge to a precipice. The heat in the room became unbearable, the stones of the walls beginning to glow a faint cherry red. The blue flames in both their hands grew, responding to the spike in their fury and concentration. This was no longer a display. It was the first, silent clash of a duel that would burn the room to its foundations.

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

The sound was absurdly normal, a stark contrast to the building inferno.

Both their heads snapped toward the door. The flames in their hands guttered slightly, the intense focus broken.

Lu Ten didn’t look away from Azula’s stunned, furious face. “Who is it?” he called, his voice steady, but with an edge of irritation.

“It is me, Tau,” a smooth, familiar voice came from the other side. “I heard Princess Azula was back.”

The name meant nothing to Azula, but the interruption was a lifeline thrown into a boiling sea. The moment shattered. The immediate, violent confrontation was deferred.

Lu Ten held Azula’s gaze for a second longer, a silent message passing between them: *This isn’t over.* Then he slowly closed his hand, extinguishing the impossible blue flame. The oppressive heat in the room began to recede, though the stones still radiated a fierce warmth.

“Enter,” Lu Ten commanded, his voice returning to its usual controlled tenor.

Azula, with visible effort, snuffed out her own blue fire. She smoothed her expression, the mask of the impeccable princess sliding back into place, but her eyes still burned with a new, unsettled fire. The truth had just been seared into her: Lu Ten wasn’t just a political player with strange power.

He was a monster she didn’t yet understand. And as the door opened, she knew her calculus had just changed completely.
