The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 49: The Phoenix Throne

The War Room of the Fire Lord was not a place for gentle debate. It was a crucible. The walls were panels of polished black marble, inlaid with maps of the world rendered in gold and crimson enamel. A long, low table of volcanic obsidian ran its length, its surface so dark it seemed to drink the light from the flickering braziers set in iron sconces. The air smelled of ink, sandalwood, and the faint, acrid scent of ambition held in check.

Fire Lord Lu Ten sat at the head of the table, not on the towering Phoenix Throne, that remained in the public audience chamber but on a simple, high-backed chair of black ironwood. He wore robes of deep crimson, unadorned by the ostentatious dragon motifs of his predecessors. His face was a calm mask, but his eyes, a sharp, calculating gold, missed nothing.

Around the table sat the new heart of the Fire Nation: a mix of aging ministers who had survived the transition, younger bureaucrats Lu Ten had promoted for their loyalty or competence, and a handful of stern-faced generals and admirals whose loyalty was still being assessed. The atmosphere was one of coiled tension. Four weeks of peace had proven more disorienting than a century of war.

“The Seventh Fleet has docked at Shu Jing,” reported Admiral Kaito, a grizzled veteran with a face like weathered leather. “The Tenth and Twelfth are two days out from Ember Island. The recall is proceeding, but logistics are a nightmare. We have ships crammed with soldiers who have known nothing but Earth Kingdom soil for decades. They’re bringing… souvenirs. Families.”

A murmur of disapproval rippled through the ministers. “Families?” Minister Qin, an old traditionalist, sneered. “Earth Kingdom peasants? They dilute the purity of the Fire Nation. They should be left behind.”

“They are citizens of the colonies,” Lu Ten said, his voice quiet but slicing through the murmur. “A fact our policy created. We do not abandon our citizens. See that they are processed and housed in the reclaimed districts of Harbor City. Next.”

A economic minister cleared his throat. “The colonial governors report… instability. With the garrisons pulling back, local Earth Kingdom loyalists are growing bold. There have been protests in Yu Dao, strikes in Garsai. They are demanding the return of ‘occupied territories.’ Some governors recommend a token military presence remain to ensure order and the continued flow of resources.”

“Resources we no longer need to fuel a war machine,” Lu Ten countered. “Let them protest. Let them strike. A show of force now would make my declaration of peace a lie. We will negotiate the status of the colonies through diplomacy, not garrisons. Draft proposals for phased sovereignty, joint governance models. We are not retreating; we are… restructuring.”

The concept was so foreign to the warmongers in the room it left them speechless.

The doors to the chamber opened, and a messenger in courtier’s robes entered, bowing low. “Fire Lord, an envoy from the Earth Kingdom, representing the Council of Five, awaits audience. They bring… vigorous queries regarding the timeline for the return of the ‘stolen provinces.’”

“Let them wait,” Lu Ten said without looking up from a scroll. “Their ‘vigorous queries’ can be tempered by the sight of our fleets sailing home, not toward their shores. Those provinces belong to the Fire Nation now. We will not be returning them. Schedule a meeting for tomorrow. Ensure the tea is excellent and the pastries are bland. A metaphor they will understand.”

A few of the younger officials hid smiles.

The messenger bowed again. “Also, a communique from the Southern Water Tribe. Delivered by hawk via an Earth Kingdom intermediary. It is from a… Chief Hakoda.”

The name sent a subtle chill through the room. The Southern Water Tribe was a minor player, but its chief was the father of the Avatar’s companions.

“Read it,” Lu Ten commanded.

The messenger unrolled the small scroll. “To Fire Lord Lu Ten. Your declaration of peace is noted. While the guns fall silent, my people remain in chains. The Southern Raiders, under Admiral Rao and later under general command, took many prisoners over the decades. Warriors, healers, children. They were brought to your nation as slaves or prisoners. I demand a full accounting and the immediate release of all Southern Water Tribe citizens held in the Fire Nation. Proof of life. Return of the remains of the deceased. This is not a request of war, but a prerequisite of peace. – Chief Hakoda of the Southern Water Tribe.”

Silence descended, heavier than before. The practice of taking prisoners from the Southern raids was an open secret, unofficially sanctioned, never formally acknowledged.

Minister Qin was the first to break it. “Preposterous! We do not take orders from a backwater chieftain! Those people are spoils of war, integrated into our labor force. To release them would be to admit wrongdoing and cripple sectors of our industry!”

“It would also be just,” said a quiet voice. It was Minister Iori, a woman in her forties Lu Ten had placed in charge of domestic reconciliation. “Our new era cannot be built on a foundation of hidden suffering. If we seek true peace, it must include amends.”

“Amends?” scoffed General Mak, a hardliner whose loyalty to Ozai had been forcibly transferred. “We defeated them! We are not in the business of charity for the defeated!”

Lu Ten leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers. The braziers flickered, and for a heartbeat, the shadows around him seemed to deepen. “Chief Hakoda is not speaking as a defeated enemy,” he said, his voice dropping into a lower, more dangerous register. “He is speaking as a father whose daughter is missing in action. A daughter last seen in the company of my late cousin, Princess Azula.”

He let that hang. The political problem was now also a deeply personal, and potentially explosive, familial one.

“We will comply,” Lu Ten announced. The generals stiffened. “We will open the prison and labor camp records. We will find every Water Tribe soul taken from the South. Those who wish to return will be given passage. Those who have built lives here may stay, with full citizenship. We will send the remains of the deceased home with honors.” He looked at General Mak. “We are not in the business of charity, General. We are in the business of building a lasting empire. And empires built on bones eventually crumble into dust. This is a strategic investment in stability.”

His tone brooked no argument. It was the voice of a man who had faced down Ozai’s fire and found it wanting.

“Now,” he said, shifting topics as if discussing the weather, “the matter of the Avatar’s whereabouts. Intelligence?”

A nervous spymaster presented a report. “Scattered sightings in the Earth Kingdom. He was last confirmed at the North Pole. Our agents believe he is traveling toward Omashu, likely for earthbending training. His companion, the Water Tribe boy Sokka, is with him.”

“And my cousin?” Lu Ten asked, the question casual, but his eyes were intent. “Any sign of Prince Zuko?”

“None, my Lord. He is believed dead at the North Pole. The Princess Azula is also missing, presumed dead.”

“Presumed,” Lu Ten echoed, a faint, knowing smile touching his lips. “A useful word. It leaves room for… surprises.”

As if summoned by the word, the great double doors to the war room did not open, they blew inward with a concussive *WHOOM* of heat and force that extinguished half the braziers and sent scrolls flying.

In the doorway, backlit by the torchlight of the outer hall, stood a figure.

Her hair, once a perfect royal topknot, was a wild, dark cascade around her shoulders. She wore simple, dark travel clothes, scorched in places. One arm was held slightly, carefully at her side, but the other rested on her hip. Her face was thinner, paler, but her golden eyes burned with a familiar, incandescent madness, now honed to a razor’s edge by suffering and fury.

The room erupted. Ministers scrambled back. Guards at the door drew their swords, but froze, unsure.

Only Lu Ten remained seated, his expression one of mild, academic interest.

“Hello, cousin,” Azula said, her voice a silken, venomous scrape that filled the silent room. She took a step inside, her gaze sweeping over the stunned faces of the council before landing on the man on the ironwood chair. “My, my. Look at you. All settled in. Does the throne feel comfortable? Or does it still smell of my father’s failure?”

Lu Ten tilted his head. “Azula? I see the reports of your demise were… greatly exaggerated. Welcome home.”

Azula’s smile was a knife-slash. “Home? This cesspool of compromise and cowardice? I think not. I’m just here for the family reunion.” Her eyes locked with his. “I hear you’ve been playing with fire, Lu Ten. Black fire. Tell me, cousin… does it whisper to you at night? Or do you do the whispering?”

The challenge hung in the air, a gauntlet thrown not just for the throne, but for the very soul of the Fire Nation’s terrifying new peace. The war council was forgotten. The only thing that mattered now was the standoff between the two surviving heirs of Sozin’s line, one crowned by dark power, the other returned from the grave with a healed arm and a heart full of poison.

Lu Ten finally stood, his movements smooth and deliberate. The shadows in the room seemed to cling to him.

“We have much to discuss, Azula,” he said, his voice devoid of fear. “Privately. The rest of you are dismissed.”

The council didn’t need to be told twice. They fled, leaving the two scions of fire alone in the darkened chamber, the ghost of their father’s war and the specter of a much older darkness hovering between them.
