The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 56: The Stolen Form

The deck of the Silent Shadow was utterly silent, save for the gentle sigh of the mist and the lap of black water against the hull. All eyes were fixed on Princess Yue.

A perfect sphere of seawater hovered above her upturned palms, its surface shimmering with an inner light. It wasn’t just water she was bending; it was water that knew her. It moved with a serene, natural grace, as if it had always been a part of her. Her eyes, no longer just pale blue but touched with the silver sheen of the deep, were closed in peaceful concentration.

Zuko watched her for a moment, a flicker of approval in his gaze. Then he turned to the sea.

He raised a hand toward the ocean, fingers splayed in a commanding grip he’d used a thousand times to summon fire. He pulled. Nothing happened. Not a ripple. A frown creased his brow.

He tried again, this time with a sharp, slashing motion, as if to cut a whip of water from the surface. Again, nothing. The ocean remained indifferent, a dark, placid mirror.

Frustration, a familiar, hot coal in his gut, began to burn. He clenched his fist, his knuckles white, and with a grunt of effort, he made a third attempt, a desperate, full-bodied yank.

Nothing. Just the mocking silence of his crew.

Then Yue’s voice, soft with wonder, cut through his frustration. “Oh, spirits… it worked.”

Zuko turned. Everyone was staring at Yue and her glowing water orb, astonished. He looked down at his own empty hands, his mind a sudden, racing blank.

‘Why can she do it and I can’t? The Turtle granted us both. Did it fail? Was my spirit too fractured to hold it?’

Then, a memory surfaced, not from this life, but from a couch in another world. Grainy animation on a screen. Katara’s early, clumsy water-whips. Pakku’s flowing, circular forms. The fundamental principle: water does not attack; it flows.

Fire was a punch. A blast. A demand. Water was an invitation. A push, then a pull.

His body moved before his mind fully articulated the thought. He let his stance soften. His knees bent, his weight shifted from the balls of his feet to a more grounded, fluid center. He let his arms fall loosely to his sides, then brought them up in a slow, circular motion, one flowing into the other, a dance with an invisible partner. It was the basic opening form of a waterbending kata, the first thing any student learned.

Across the deck, Katara, who had finally torn her amazed gaze from Yue, saw him move.

Her breath caught.

‘That’s the “Tide’s Return.”’ The stance Master Pakku had drilled into her for weeks before she could hold it without wobbling. It was about balance, about feeling the push and pull within your own body before asking it of the water. Zuko’s feet were placed exactly’ right, his spine aligned, his shoulders relaxed in a way that spoke of unnatural, instinctual understanding. It was… perfect.

Then he moved his arms in the accompanying sweep.

A whip of water sluggishly peeled itself from the ocean’s surface. It was pathetic. Clumsy. It moved like a sick sea-snake, thick and uncoordinated, before splashing back down a few feet away, missing the deck entirely.

But Katara didn’t see the clumsy result. She saw the technique.

The form, the flow, the precise transfer of weight from his back foot through his hips and out through his guiding hand, it was nearly masterful. It was the technique of a bender who understood the theory of water on a deep, almost academic level. But his control… his connection to the element itself… was that of a newborn. The water obeyed his form, but it didn’t sing for him. Not like it did for Yue. Not like it did for her.

“How is this even possible?” The words left her lips before she could stop them, a stunned whisper.

Then she remembered. The royal palace. Weeks ago. The bathhouse. Steam and blood and a confession forced out by pain and proximity.

*“I studied waterbending because it’s the opposite of everything I was taught… Water is change. Adaptation. I needed that.”*

He’d told her he’d studied scrolls. She’d called him a liar, a thief. He’d admitted to being both.

But this… this wasn’t just studying. This was embodying. He hadn’t just read about the “Tide’s Return”; he’d absorbed its essence so completely he could replicate its perfect form on the first try, without a teacher. It was as if he had a library of bending forms, all bending forms, catalogued somewhere in his mind, and was now trying to check one out.

The implications crashed over her, cold and terrifying. If he could do this with water after a single granting… what else did that mind know?

Zuko ignored her whisper, his focus entirely on the failed water whip. He stared at the spot where it had fallen, his expression not one of disappointment, but of intense analysis. He’d made water move. The element was there, answering the form. The connection was just… weak. Unrefined. A blunt instrument where he needed a scalpel.

He needed to train. Not just the forms, which his body seemed to already know, but the feeling. The spiritual handshake with the element itself.

He looked from his hands to Yue, then out to the vast, mist-shrouded shell of the Lion Turtle. The Turtle had granted the power. But mastery? That was a debt he’d have to pay in sweat and will.

“The gift is given,” he said aloud, his voice pulling everyone’s attention back to him. “But the skill is earned. We sail within the hour. Our course remains unchanged.” He finally glanced at Katara, meeting her wide, unsettled eyes. “We have a guru to find.”

He turned and strode toward the helm, leaving the deck buzzing with a new kind of awe, not just at the miracle they’d witnessed, but at the impossible, knowing prince at the center of it, who could steal the shape of mastery from thin air.
