The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 46: A Banquet of Whispers and Laughter

The Royal Banquet Hall of Omashu was a cavernous space carved to amplify sound and spectacle. Long tables of polished blackwood groaned under the weight of Earth Kingdom bounty: steaming platters of roasted hog-monkey, fragrant clay pots of spiced rice and lentils, pyramids of jewel-toned fruits, and loaves of dark bread still warm from the ovens. The air was thick with the smells of sage, garlic, and sizzling fat.

King Bumi had, of course, declared the first rule of the feast: “All food must be eaten with your non-dominant hand! And you must compliment the dish to your left, but insult the dish to your right! It builds character and confusion!” This led to a chaotic, uproarious symphony of clattering utensils, shouted compliments (“This stew is as robust as a badgermole’s spirit!”), and playful insults (“This roast fowl has the audacity of a cabbage merchant in a rockslide!”).

At the high table, Bumi presided like a chaotic conductor. He ate his mashed potatoes by flinging them into the air and catching them in his mouth, much to Queen Lian’s long-suffering sighs. He occasionally used earthbending to make the salt shaker dance a jig or to subtly extend the leg of a servant’s stool just as they sat down.

Aang was seated between Princess Suyin and Prince Dao. Sokka was engulfed by the twins, Lin and Wei, who had instantly adopted him as a combination of war hero and comic relief.

With Sokka and the Twins: “So you really rode the flying bison?”Lin asked, her eyes wide as she gnawed on a drumstick. “Well, rode is a strong word,” Sokka said, puffing up. “More like… strategically clung while directing its rage toward our next destination.. It’s all about leverage and… dramatic timing.” Wei snorted.“Did it try to eat you?” “Only once or twice. But I used my trusty boomerang to… dissuade it.” Sokka mimed a throw. The twins were enthralled. They began pelting him with questions about Water Tribe weapons, ice dodging, and whether he’d ever eaten a blubbered sea prune that fought back. Sokka,in his element, launched into increasingly embellished tales. The twins’ laughter was a constant, bright counterpoint to the general din. They were clever and mischievous, finishing each other’s sentences and sharing glances that promised future pranks. Sokka found himself relaxing for the first time in weeks, the simple, joyful chaos of a big family dinner washing over him.

With Aang, Suyin, and Dao: Princess Suyin ate with a quiet, observant grace. After a period of comfortable silence, she turned to Aang. “The Air Nomads were vegetarians, right? Is all this…” she gestured at the laden table, “…overwhelming?”

Aang smiled, picking at a plate of stuffed mushrooms and glazed roots. “A little. But it’s amazing. The Air Temples had feasts too, but they were quieter. More about sharing what was gathered from the gardens and the cliffs. This is… louder.”

“Omashu is always loud,” Suyin said with a small smile. “Father says noise is just the sound of life not being bored.” She studied him. “You don’t seem like someone who enjoys noise much right now.”

Aang’s smile faded. He poked a mushroom with his fork. “There’s a lot on my mind.” “The missing Water Tribe girl,”Suyin stated, not as a question. “And the war being over, but not feeling over.”

Aang looked at her, surprised again. “How do you know that?” She shrugged.“You have a thinking face. It’s different from Dad’s ‘I’m-thinking-about-launching-a-cabbage-cart-into-the-sun’ face. Yours is heavier.”

From Aang’s other side, Prince Dao’s low, serious voice cut in. “The strategic implications of the Fire Lord’s sudden abdication are… unsettling.” Dao had been listening while methodically dismantling a fish. He had the focused air of a young general at a briefing. “A regime change that swift, following a major naval defeat, suggests either unprecedented internal cohesion, which the Fire Nation lacks or an external pressure forcing their hand.”

Aang blinked. “External pressure?”

“You,”Dao said, his dark eyes locking onto Aang’s. “Your victory at the North Pole demonstrated the Avatar’s return as a tangible, military-scale threat. It may have spooked the Fire Nation court into replacing Ozai with a more… conciliatory figure. Or it may have provided the cover for a pre-planned coup.” He leaned in slightly. “Your perspective would be valuable. You faced Prince Zuko directly. What is your assessment of His capabilities? His likely whereabouts?”

Aang felt the weight of the question. He saw Katara’s desperate eyes, felt the ghost of her water whip. He heard Kuruk’s voice: He gathers tools… for a battle he knows is coming. “Prince Zuko is…complicated,” Aang began, choosing his words with care. “He’s relentless. Smart. And he knows things he shouldn’t.” He’s from another world. He’s fighting the same ancient evil I am. “I don’t think he’s dead. I think he’s here. In the Earth Kingdom. Somewhere south, probably.”

Dao’s brow furrowed. “Based on what intelligence?”

“A feeling,”Aang said, which was partially true. He had a spiritual sense, a tug in his gut that pointed toward the vast, trackless south. “And the way he operated before. He doesn’t think like a normal Fire Nation commander. He goes where he’s not expected, where the rules are different.”

“A feeling,” Dao repeated, his tone flat, skepticism evident. He set down his utensils. “Avatar Aang, with respect, ‘feelings’ do not secure borders or predict troop movements. If Prince Zuko is alive, he is a rogue prince with a loyal crew, knowledge of our lands, and a grievance against his own nation and the world. He is a destabilizing element of the highest order. We should be mobilizing scouts, interrogating captured Fire Nation personnel, not relying on feelings.”

Aang met Dao’s stern gaze. He understood the prince’s logic. It was Sokka’s logic, sharpened by royal duty. But Aang had seen the board from a higher vantage point. “I know he can’t be trusted in the normal way,”Aang said, his voice firming. “But the enemy isn’t just the Fire Nation anymore. There’s something else coming. Something older. And… I have to prepare for it.” He has Katara. He has Yue. He’s gathering power, not just for a throne, but for a war in the shadows.

Dao’s expression remained unconvinced. “A ‘greater evil’ is a convenient distraction for a lesser one to rebuild its strength. My father believes in madness and intuition. I believe in walls, weapons, and verified facts.” He gave a curt nod. “Enjoy your meal, Avatar.” He turned his attention back to his plate, the conversation clearly closed in his mind.

Suyin, who had been listening silently, nudged Aang’s elbow. “Don’t mind Dao,” she whispered. “He got all the ‘serious’ genes. Mom says he was born with a frown and a checklist.” She looked thoughtfully at her brother’s rigid back. “He’s scared. The war ending so suddenly… it’s like the ground shifted under him. He doesn’t know what to defend against anymore, so he wants to defend against everything.”

Aang nodded, understanding dawning. Dao’s suspicion wasn’t just about Zuko; it was about a world that had suddenly, inexplicably changed its rules.

The banquet rolled on. Bumi initiated a contest where contestants had to balance a grape on their nose while reciting epic poetry backwards. Sokka, to the twins’ delight, failed spectacularly, sending his grape shooting across the table into a minister’s soup.

As the desserts were served, sticky honey cakes and moon-peach pies, Aang’s mind churned. Zuko is preparing. But for what, exactly? He took Katara. Why? She was a powerful waterbender, yes, but she was also… Katara. Fierce, moral, stubborn. Was she a prisoner? A willing accomplice? The memory of her protecting Zuko in the Oasis haunted him. Had he manipulated her that completely?

And Princess Yue. The Moon Spirit’s mortal vessel. Why take her? She wasn’t a bender. Was it political? A hostage against the Northern Tribe? Or was it spiritual? Did Zuko’s otherworldly knowledge tell him something about Yue’s connection that even she didn’t know?

He’s gathering tools, Kuruk had said. For a battle he knows is coming. Aang looked at his hands. He had to get stronger. Faster. He had to master earthbending, then find a firebending teacher. He had to be ready by summer’s end, not just to face the comet-enhanced threat, but to face whatever Zuko would become in his desperate race against the same darkness.

He felt a profound loneliness then, sitting amidst the laughter and clatter. He was the Avatar, the bridge between worlds, but he was walking a path no one else could fully see, toward a battle he couldn’t fully describe, and one of the few people who understood the scale of the threat was the very person he might have to fight.

“Your thinking face is back,” Suyin murmured, offering him a honey cake. “It’s okay. The best plans are made in quiet moments, even noisy ones.”

Aang took the cake, giving her a grateful smile. “Thanks, Suyin.”

“You’re welcome,” she said. Then, with a spark of her father’s mischief, she added, “Besides, if this Prince Zuko is as clever as you say, he’s probably somewhere way more interesting than ‘somewhere south.’ He’s probably trying to teach a turtle-duck to firebend or something.”

Aang almost choked on his cake. If only she knew how close to a terrifying truth she was. A Lion Turtle wasn’t a turtle-duck, but the principle was alarmingly sound.

The banquet ended with Bumi leading a conga line of ministers and servants around the hall, earthbending the floor to create gentle, rolling waves under their feet. As the chaos finally died down and guests began to retire, Aang looked out a window at the moonlit spires of Omashu.

Hang on, Katara, he thought, the noise of the feast fading into the deep, silent hum of the sleeping city. Wherever you are, whatever he’s making you do… just hang on. I’m coming. And I’m bringing the earth with me.

He turned to find Sokka, who was being enthusiastically shown a hidden passageway by the twins. Catching his eye, Sokka gave him a thumbs-up and a grin, blissfully unaware of the tectonic worries shifting in his friend’s soul.

Tomorrow, the earthbending would begin. The path to the end of summer started not with a feeling, but with the first lesson from a mad king. And somewhere to the south, under the same moon, another path was being forged, stone by stolen stone, by a phantom prince and the friends he had taken.
