The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 51: A Proposal in the Crucible

The heavy door swung open, and a man in the dark, severe robes of a senior court official stepped inside. His posture was correct, his face a mask of polite deference, but his eyes were sharp, calculating. Azula’s gaze swept over him, and a flicker of recognition lit in her mind, cold and unwelcome. She’d seen this face before, hovering in the background during Zhao’s brief, disastrous rise. A lieutenant. Tau.

The air, still thick with the residual heat of the near-duel, now grew tense for a different reason.

Tau bowed low, first to the Fire Lord, then, with a fraction less depth, to Azula. “My Lord. Princess. I came as soon as I heard of your miraculous return.”

Azula’s lip curled. She didn’t return the bow. Her eyes cut to Lu Ten. “Are you sure about allowing this… riffraff to enter while we’re speaking, cousin? Some matters should remain within the family.”

Tau’s deferential mask didn’t slip, but a hardness entered his eyes. “Excuse me, Princess, but I am now the Court Advisor to the Fire Lord. I would appreciate a measure of respect.”

Azula took a slow step toward him, her voice dropping to a venomous purr. “You are not of royal blood, are you?”

The question hung, an indictment. No hint of a reply was needed; the answer was written in Tau’s lack of lineage and in the faint, lingering scent of naval coal and ambition that still clung to him.

“Tau is here because he is an important part of my court,” Lu Ten corrected, his voice calm but firm. He didn’t move from behind the obsidian table, but his presence seemed to fill the space between them. “However, Azula still remains of royal blood, Tau. And I warn you not to speak to her in such a manner again.”

The rebuke was mild, but it was a line drawn. Tau’s shoulders stiffened almost imperceptibly. He bowed again, lower this time. “My apologies, Princess. My eagerness to serve overcame my decorum.”

Azula dismissed him with a slight turn of her head, her attention returning to Lu Ten, but the point had been scored. This upstart held influence, but it was borrowed. Fragile.

“My Lord,” Tau continued, smoothly shifting topics, “now that we know the Princess is alive and well… have you given further thought to the matter we discussed yesterday?”

Lu Ten’s brow furrowed for a moment. Then, understanding dawned in his sharp eyes, followed by a flicker of something, annoyance? calculation? He recovered quickly. “Ah. Yes. The matter.” He glanced at Azula, then back to Tau. “Would you mind giving us some private time? Not to say I don’t appreciate your help and advice, Tau, but I believe this is… best left for me to handle directly.”

“Of course, my Lord,” Tau said, his tone perfectly agreeable. He bowed once more. “I shall be in the antechamber if you require anything.” His gaze lingered on Azula for a half-second too long before he turned and left, the door closing with a solid, final sound.

Silence returned, but it was different now. The heat of bending had been replaced by the chill of politics.

“What,” Azula demanded, the moment they were alone, “exactly is it that you want to speak with me about? What ‘matter’ is so delicate your pet snake had to slither away?”

Lu Ten walked around the table, coming to stand closer to her. He clasped his hands behind his back, adopting the posture of a ruler explaining a difficult but necessary policy. “You see, now that I am Fire Lord, the noble clans have been… pressuring me. A kingdom needs stability. Stability requires a clear line of succession. They press for a future heir.”

Azula listened, her expression impassive. A cold knot began to form in her stomach.

“Most of the noble houses don’t contest my claim,” he continued. “They believe, rightly, that the throne was my birthright as the firstborn son of the Crown Prince. But legitimacy today needs to be secured for tomorrow. There have been… suggestions. Women put forth from various clans for me to take as my wife. Alliances to be woven.”

The implications clicked into place with a soundless, terrible snap. Azula’s eyes widened, not with surprise, but with a furious, incredulous recognition. “What is it with you and Zuko?” she spat, the words laced with disgust. “Zuko wanted me to do the same thing with him! What is wrong with you people? Is incest the only political strategy you can conceive of?”

Lu Ten’s head tilted, his analytical curiosity overtaking any offense. “So… Zuko had the same idea? Of taking you as his wife?”

“He proposed it as some sort of grand, mad scheme,” Azula said, waving a dismissive hand, though the memory of Zuko’s intense, coldly rational proposal in the infirmary sent an unwelcome shiver down her spine. “A way to ‘make the royal lineage pure’ and ‘consolidate support from the noble clans.’ He spoke of fire, of a new order. It was deranged.”

“I may have underestimated my cousin,” Lu Ten murmured, more to himself than to her. A frown creased his brow. “To hear the reports… manipulating the court, engineering Zhao’s fall, stripping you of your duties and rank… I didn’t remember Zuko being that smart. Or that cynical. Or that ruthless.”

“When he returned from his exile,” Azula said, the words coming out clipped, “Zuko came back as a completely different person. A more powerful firebender, for one. I’m sure you’ve heard the stories. His exploits against the Earth Kingdom garrisons. The gigantic sun he summoned during the battle for Nan-Hai Province. He started the Siege of the North with the same technique.”

She saw Lu Ten’s eyes narrow, filing this away. It was one thing to hear rumors; it was another to have them confirmed by the one person who had witnessed it all firsthand.

“So you’re saying,” Lu Ten summarized, his voice low and intent, “that when Zuko returned from exile, he was smarter. Braver. And his bending was… exponentially stronger?”

“I guess you could say that,” Azula conceded, a bitter taste in her mouth. The memory of their Agni Kai on the drill, of the cold, unfamiliar mastery in Zuko’s movements, was still fresh. “It was as if he’d shed the clumsy, angry boy and become something else entirely. Something focused. Something… knowing.”

Lu Ten fell silent, pacing a few steps away, his back to her. He stared at one of the gilded maps, but his mind was clearly elsewhere, re-evaluating the ghost of a cousin he thought he understood. The weak, scarred prince banished in disgrace was one thing. A cunning, powerful rival who had manipulated the capital from exile and nearly conquered the North Pole was another.

He turned back to face her, the ruler’s mask back in place, but the curiosity still burned in his eyes. “Fascinating. A shame he’s dead, then. We could have used that kind of ruthless focus.” He paused, letting the statement hang, a subtle test.

Azula met his gaze evenly, betraying nothing. “A shame,” she echoed, her voice flat.

Lu Ten walked back to the obsidian table, resting his hands on it. The subject of Zuko was closed. The previous, more pressing matter returned to the fore. “Regardless… the issue of succession remains. The nobles whisper. They seek guarantees. A union within the pure royal line would silence them. It would unite the claims of the two strongest branches of Sozin’s blood. Mine, from the eldest son. Yours, from the… second brother.”

He didn’t say it as a romantic proposal. He said it as a geopolitical strategy. A merger of assets.

Azula stared at him, the cold knot in her stomach tightening into a hard, furious diamond. They were all the same. Ozai, who saw her as a weapon. Zuko, who saw her as a prize and a pillar. Now Lu Ten, who saw her as a political stabilizer. A broodmare to cement his dynasty.

But unlike with Zuko, there was no grand vision here, no terrifying promise of a new world. Just the cold, practical consolidation of a throne he’d already taken. And unlike with Ozai, there was no fear to bind her, only this strange, black fire and a challenge she didn’t yet understand.

She smiled, a slow, dangerous baring of teeth that held no warmth. “And what do I get out of this… merger, Fire Lord Lu Ten? Aside from the thrilling prospect of sharing your bed and bearing your children?”

Lu Ten’s expression didn’t change. “You get to be Fire Lady. You get influence. You get a share of the power I wield. You get to help me guide the Fire Nation into its new era of… focused strength. And you get to be at the side of the strongest firebender alive.”

The challenge was back, implicit in the last sentence. The strongest firebender alive. He’d already demonstrated he could mimic her blue fire. He’d defeated Ozai. The unspoken question hung between them: *What can you do but agree?*

Azula held his gaze, the blue fire she’d shown him seeming to flicker in the depths of her eyes. She didn’t answer. She let the silence stretch, a counter-challenge of her own.

The game was no longer just about a throne, or a proposal. It was a duel postponed. And Azula had just decided she needed to learn much, much more about her cousin’s black fire, and the advisor who slithered in its shadow, before she decided how to play her next move.
