The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 42: Before the First Sunrise

The Silent Shadow had been towed, gently but irresistibly, by a current the massive being generated, until it floated off the creature’s starboard flank, near the immense, moss-draped curve where shell met water. They were at the front.

The mist here was thinner, shredded by the Lion Turtle’s slow, world-moving passage. The air hummed with a deep, sub-audible frequency that vibrated in the chest and made the teeth ache. The crew stood at the rail in utter silence, a collective breath held. Even Toph was quiet, her head tilted, ‘watching’ with her feet the incomprehensible seismic signature of the living island.

The water directly ahead began to bulge. Not with a wave, but with a rising dome, as if the ocean itself was forming a liquid mountain. It grew, shimmering, transparent, revealing the dark shape within. Then, with a sound like a thousand waterfalls in reverse, the dome collapsed, cascading back into the sea in curtains of glittering foam.

And there it was.

The head.

It was ancient, wise beyond measure, and weary down to its stone bones. A leonine face of weathered grey rock, etched with deep lines that spoke of epochs, not years. Moss and phosphorescent lichen clung to its craggy brows. Its eyes were vast, deep-set pools of calm, luminous blue, like mountain lakes under a twilight sky. And across its broad forehead and sweeping facial structure were markings, elegant, swirling patterns that seemed carved from living water, glowing with a soft, internal aquamarine light. This was a Water Lion Turtle, a primordial sovereign of the deep.

Zuko stood at the very prow, alone. He had donned a simple, dark robe, leaving his scarred face bare to the creature’s gaze. He felt the weight of its attention settle on him, a pressure that had nothing to do with gravity.

He took a step forward onto the narrow boarding plank that led to the creature’s shell, but did not cross it. Instead, he bowed from the waist, a deep, formal gesture of respect he had never offered to any king or Fire Lord.

“Great One,” Zuko’s voice rang out, clear and steady, carrying over the sigh of water and wind. “It has been an age unseen. Not since the era before the first Avatar. Not since the last great battle of Raava and Vaatu has your kind walked openly in the world.”

Behind him, Katara skidded to a halt at the railing, breathless from her run, just in time to hear the strange, resonant names. Raava and Vaatu. They meant nothing to her, but the reverence in Zuko’s tone held her in place. This wasn’t the calculating prince or the haunted strategist. This was a man speaking to a god.

Zuko straightened, his golden eyes meeting the bottomless blue of the Turtle. “All of humanity, in all our petty nations, owes you our survival. We live on the ground you once carried. We bend the elements you once gifted.” His voice dropped, tinged with a genuine, somber regret. “And for that, I must apologize. For the hunting. The forgetting. The arrogance of the ages since. You have been stewards, and we have been ungrateful children.”

He took a slow breath, the awe plain on his face, stripped of all pretence. “I stand in awe of your duty. Your legacy. I am Zuko. Prince of the Fire Nation. Son of Ozai. Son of Azulon. Son of Sozin.” He paused, then added with deliberate weight, “Descendant of Wan.”

A ripple seemed to pass through the water around the Turtle. The glowing markings on its face pulsed slightly brighter.

“I come before you not with a demand, but with a request born of desperate need,” Zuko continued, his hands open at his sides. “The world faces threats older than nations. Darkness stirs that your kin once helped seal away. To face it, I seek to become more than I am. I seek the gift of a second element and the oldest form of bending. The bending of the energies.”

A murmur, half shock, half disbelief, ran through the crew behind him. He spoke it aloud as if asking for a second helping of rice.

“I have studied the old ways. I have a vessel, a human blessed with the essence of the Moon Spirit, Tui. I plan, with her consent, to perform a ritual of spiritual osmosis under the full moon, using the waters of the Spirit Oasis of the North. This will fortify my soul, make it elastic enough and strong enough to hold a second imprint without tearing. Then… I would ask you to grant it to me.”

The Lion Turtle’s enormous eyes seemed to sharpen. A low, thoughtful rumble emanated from it, vibrating through the ship’s hull. It was not a sound heard with ears, but felt in the spirit.

‘You speak of lore buried in the silt of ten thousand years.’ The voice was not in the air, but in their minds, a slow, grinding tectonic thought, vast and patient. ‘No single human has carried such knowledge since the days when my brothers and sisters still spoke to your kind. Your mind… it echoes with understandings that do not belong here.’

Zuko did not flinch. “My path has been… unconventional. My sources are fragmented, but true. The full moon rises in three days’ time. That is when the ritual must occur.” He gestured back to his ship, his people. “In addition, I ask your permission, Great One, for myself and my people to come atop your back. To explore, to study, to remember, if only for a few days, how our ancestors once lived in the era before the Avatar. To prepare on sacred ground.”

The Lion Turtle was silent for a long, long moment. The only sound was the lap of water against its stone chin.

‘I have felt… disturbances,’ the mental voice finally resumed, heavy with a weariness that spanned millennia. ‘The waking of old hungers. The thinning of walls. And I have sensed the arrival of a powerful one, a fire-wielder whose spirit has not walked this world since the days of the Second Avatar… my friend, Yogan.’

Zuko’s breath caught. Yogan. The name from his visions, confirmed. Of course it made sense that the lion turtle knew the second avatar.

‘The coming of the ancients heralds an ending,’ the Turtle mused. ‘And an ending must always lead to a new era, whether of light or of silence.’ Its great head inclined a fraction, the motion causing a small tide to slosh against the ship’s hull. ‘Your intent is clear, child of Wan. Arrogant, perhaps. Dangerous, certainly. But not born of mere greed. There is a purpose in you that aligns with the turning of the age.’

The glowing water-markings on its face shone more brightly.

‘I will grant your request to tread upon my back.’ The mental voice held a note of solemn concession. ‘And I will consider your greater request. If your ritual under the moon is successful, if your soul is tempered and made ready, I will grant you the element of this form: Water. And with it… the understanding of Energy, the first bending, from which all others were derived.’

Energybending. The crew didn’t understand the term, but the gravity with which it was communicated was unmistakable.

‘But know this,’ the Turtle’s thought-voice grew stern, a wave of pressure washing over them. ‘I sense the strength of your spirit. It is tangled, dual-natured, but strong. This ritual you propose… it will only work for one such as you. The spiritual density required would shatter any of your companions. Their souls are single-threaded, pure. Yours is… braided. It can bear the strain. The ritual is for you alone.’

Zuko nodded, a fierce light in his eyes. “The ritual was only ever meant for me.”

‘Then prepare, descendant of Wan. The moon will judge your worthiness. My shell is your sanctuary until then. You may ascend.’

With that, the colossal head began to sink back beneath the water, the glowing markings fading into the deep green gloom, leaving only the impossible, forested mountain of its back before them.

As the awe-struck crew began to murmur and move, preparing to disembark onto the living island, Katara finally pushed forward, her heart pounding from Yue’s terror and now this cosmic audience.

“Zuko!” she called out.

He turned from watching the Turtle submerge, his face still etched with reverent intensity. The names Raava and Vaatu hung between them, unasked, unanswered.

But before she could speak, he saw the urgency in her eyes. “What is it?”

“Yue,” Katara said, her voice low. “She needs to see you. Now. It’s about the black fire. She said a name… Vaatu.”

All the awe drained from Zuko’s face, replaced by the cold, sharp focus of a general who has just heard the enemy is inside the walls. The spiritual negotiation was over. A more immediate threat had just slammed into the present.

“Take me to her,” he said, and his voice was like stone.
