The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 58: The Cost of Creation

The silence on deck was thicker than the Gyre’s mist. All eyes were locked on the spiral of water that had just danced around Hinaro’s wrist before falling back into the bowl. It was a small thing, a parlor trick for a master bender. But in this context, on this ship, performed by her... it was a miracle. A quiet, impossible violation of the natural order.

Hinaro’s eyelids fluttered open. She looked dazed, her gaze unfocused before it sharpened on her own hand, still resting in the bowl. She lifted it, watching droplets fall from her fingertips. They fell normally. She frowned, a deep crease forming between her painted brows. She concentrated, the way she might focus before a precise strike or a difficult stance. She waved her hand over the water.

Nothing.

A flicker of confusion, then disappointment crossed her face.

“It’s not a switch,” Zuko’s voice rasped from where he lay against Yue. He was pale, his breathing still labored, but his golden eyes were sharp, observing her reaction. “It’s a seed. You felt it. You called it. Now you have to learn how to make it grow. It will be… harder for you. You are of the Earth. Water is not your native tongue. But the potential is there.”

He tried to push himself up, but a wave of dizziness forced him back. Yue’s arms tightened around him. “Don’t move,” she murmured, her voice laced with an authority that surprised even her.

Zuko yielded, a rare show of vulnerability in front of his crew. He looked past Hinaro to Lee, whose face was a canvas of shock, wonder, and fierce, protective love. “Your wife is now the first new true waterbender created in ten thousand years. Protect that. Teach her. She will be disoriented. The world will feel… fluid. Unsteady.”

Lee could only nod, his scholarly vocabulary utterly failing him. He helped Hinaro to her feet. She stood swaying, not from weakness, but from a profound internal disorientation, as if the solid ground she’d always perceived through her feet had turned to shifting sand.

Katara finally broke her stunned silence. She stepped toward Hinaro, her healer’s instincts and a waterbender’s deep, personal shock driving her forward. “Can I…?” she asked, gesturing to Hinaro’s arm.

Hinaro, still looking at her own hands, nodded mutely.

Katara took her hand, turning it over. She didn’t feel for a pulse. Instead, she called a small globe of moisture from the air, letting it coat her own palm before pressing it against Hinaro’s skin. She closed her eyes, feeling.

“It’s… there,” Katara whispered, her own eyes flying open. “It’s faint but I can feel that her chi is there, her spiritual energy is like other benders now.” She looked at Zuko, her blue eyes wide with a horror that was edged with unwilling fascination. “You didn’t just give her an ability. You changed her spirit. Her architecture.”

“I gave her a choice she didn’t have before,” Zuko corrected, his voice gaining a sliver of strength. “A tool. What she builds with it is up to her.”

“And the cost?” Katara shot back, gesturing at his prostrate form. “You look like you just fought the Ocean Spirit. Again.”

“The cost,” Zuko admitted, closing his eyes briefly, “is significant. The energy required to rewrite a spiritual blueprint… it doesn’t come from nowhere. It comes from me. From my own… reserves.” He opened his eyes, and they held a grim calculation. “It is not a gift I can give often. Or lightly.”

Toph, who had been unusually quiet, stomped her foot. The deck vibrated. “Sparky’s not lying. His whole… vibration is different. Weaker. Sloppy. Like a bell that’s been cracked. It’s kinda pathetic.”

“Thank you for the assessment, Toph,” Zuko said dryly.

“You’re welcome. So, what’s the plan, oh mighty cracked bell? We just sit here while you drool on the Moon Princess?”

“We sail,” Zuko said, forcing himself to sit up straighter, shrugging off Yue’s support though she kept a hand on his back. “To Kyoshi. Jee will have the Guru. I need to understand this… depletion. How to manage it. How to recover from it. The Guru will teach me to handle this better. It seems the first lesson is not to unravel it by giving pieces away.”

He looked at Hinaro, who was now experimentally flicking her fingers at the bowl, producing only the smallest of ripples. “Lee. Take your wife below. Get her dry. Let her rest. The work is hers.”

As Lee guided a still-bewildered Hinaro away, the crew began to disperse, murmurs spreading through the ship like a low tide. The reality of what they had just witnessed was settling in. Their prince could not only bend a second element, he could bestow it. He was a living wellspring of power. But even wells could run dry.

Katara lingered, her arms crossed. “Why her?” she asked, her voice low.

Zuko met her gaze. “Why not her?”

“Don’t play games. You said it costs you. You’re weakened. You picked her for a reason. Was it just because she’s married to Lee? A reward for loyalty?”

“Partially,” Zuko conceded. “Loyalty should be rewarded with more than trinkets or titles. It should be rewarded with transformation.” He paused, his gaze drifting to the horizon, toward the distant, unseen Kyoshi Island. “But also… she is of the Earth. Sturdy. Resilient. If the gift could take root in her, in a spirit naturally opposed to water’s nature, then it can take root in anyone. It was the hardest test I could devise for the theory.”

“You used her as an experiment?” Katara’s voice was sharp.

“I offered her a possibility,” Zuko corrected, his tone final. “All of this is an experiment, Katara. Every step I take is into the unknown. I chose a strong vessel for the first trial. Would you have preferred I started with someone weaker? Risked their spirit shattering?”

Katara had no answer. The ruthless logic was, as always, infuriating and impeccable.

Yue helped Zuko to his feet. He stood, wavering, but his posture straightened with sheer will. “Set course for Kyoshi Island,” he ordered Rin, who was watching from the helm with a new, profound wariness. “Best speed. The sooner we meet this Guru, the sooner I can stop feeling like I’ve been spiritually hollowed out with a spoon.”

As the ship’s engines thrummed back to life, turning the massive vessel away from the Unending Gyre, Zuko stood at the rail, leaning heavily on it. The silver-blue light was gone from his eyes, but the exhaustion in them was deep, a shadow in the gold.

He had wielded the power of a god, however briefly. He had rewritten a mortal’s destiny.

And it had almost broken him.

He looked at his own hands, the hands that had conducted the Moon’s essence and the Turtle’s gift. The same hands that now trembled with a fatigue that sleep would not cure.

‘The Avatar’s power is limitless,’ he thought, the memory of his earlier realization returning with cold clarity. ‘Mine is not. I must be infinitely smarter with what I have.’

The path to godhood, it seemed, was paved with the terrifying, exhausting responsibility of creation. And he had only just taken the first, staggering step.
