Sorry, Our Captain Is a True All-Rounder

Chapter 106: Chapter 106: Colorful Viper

After studying the map, Lin Jingjing decided to head northwest. There were caves in that area.

They could use a cave as their base, so they wouldn’t have to worry about rain putting out their fire.

A cave would also offer a degree of safety.

This was a primeval forest. The trees grew tall and dense, their thick canopies blocking out the sun. Sunlight only managed to filter through the small gaps between the leaves.

They formed a single-file line, laser guns in hand, and advanced slowly.

In a primeval forest, even without mutant beasts, the native predators, snakes, and insects were all deadly.

They lurked in the dense jungle, poised to strike, clung to tree trunks, biding their time. Tiny insects squirmed in the rotting leaves, inching their way toward any unsuspecting person.

Seemingly beautiful flowers emitted lethal fragrances, and what looked like ordinary vines could turn and devour you in an instant.

Even the very mud underfoot held hidden dangers.

A constant accumulation of dead branches and fallen leaves reduced soil evaporation, keeping the ground excessively moist.

As the carbonization process took hold, mineral nutrients were leached from the soil, allowing mosses to flourish.

The mosses retained vast amounts of water, slowing the decomposition of plant matter. Peat began to accumulate, gradually forming bogs.

The forest appeared calm, but hidden dangers were omnipresent.

They proceeded with caution, but danger found them all the same.

A snake as thick as a five-year-old child appeared before them. It stared at Lin Jingjing, who was in the lead, and flicked its forked tongue.

The five of them tensed up at the sight of the massive snake that had suddenly appeared before them.

They gripped their laser guns tightly, bodies taut, ready to fight the venomous-looking serpent at a moment’s notice.

Lin Jingjing placed one hand behind her back and began making hand signals.

’Watch my gestures. This snake is probably highly venomous.’

Seeing her signal, they tightened their grip on their laser guns. Gu Kaiwen’s knuckles turned white from the pressure.

”HISSSSSS—” The sound of its flicking tongue grew louder. Everyone’s breathing grew shallow. They stood frozen in place, not daring to move.

The snake’s head lowered. Behind her back, Lin Jingjing’s hand clenched into a fist. Shi Feng, caught in the middle of the formation, turned pale at the sight of the giant snake, and his legs began to tremble uncontrollably.

He was afraid of snakes. Terrified.

The only reason he didn’t scream and run was the knowledge that doing so would get them all killed.

Shi Feng clenched his fists so hard his nails dug into his palms. The pain helped him stay rational, keeping him from doing something that would disgrace him.

Everyone’s hearts were in their throats—not just the five of them, but everyone watching the live broadcast as well.

Captain Li was so anxious he shot up from his chair. His eyes were glued to the screen as he paced back and forth.

His eyes were filled with worry and frustration.

Yun Yiyou, however, sat in the main seat, watching the scene unfold with calm composure.

On a nearby table lay the files for the five cadets. All had Grade D spiritual power. ’I wonder how they’ll handle this,’ he thought.

’Will they press the rescue button and drop out, or will they risk everything to defeat this variegated giant snake?’

The snake lived up to its name. The variegated giant snake’s body was covered in complex patterns. But it was its triangular, red head that marked it as dangerous.

Just one gram of its venom was enough to kill a full-grown adult. This species was not only huge, but also incredibly venomous.

Anyone bitten would die within three hours if they didn’t receive an antivenom injection. The death it caused was excruciating.

The venom would spread through the bloodstream, and when it took full effect, the victim would feel as if their entire body was being consumed by fire—an agony that made one wish for death.

”HISSSSSS—” The snake’s head drew nearer. Just as a nervous Lin Jingjing was wondering how she could possibly kill it, a voice suddenly echoed in her mind.

’Master, let me out! I’ll fight it!’ It was the little green snake. It reared its head, its own tongue flicking in and out.

’Can you really handle it?’ Lin Jingjing asked worriedly, looking at its tiny form. ’You’re so small.’

’Master, I can change my size at will,’ the little green snake replied.

’This is the only way,’ she thought. Gritting her teeth, Lin Jingjing made a final set of hand signals to the others.

’On my count of one, you all run to the sides.’

The variegated serpent drew closer, its tongue flicking. It loomed over them, a terrifying sight.

’Three... two... one...’

The moment she finished the count, the four behind her scrambled into the bushes on either side. Their movement triggered the serpent, which opened its cavernous mouth and lunged at Lin Jingjing.

Lin Jingjing had already turned to flee, but she was no match for the serpent’s speed.

Just as everyone watched, certain she was about to be bitten, Lin Jingjing yelled, ”Xiao Lü!”

A loud BANG erupted from behind her. The resulting shockwave threw Lin Jingjing through the air, and she slammed hard against a tree trunk.

She slid down the trunk to the ground. A trickle of blood seeped from the corner of her mouth, and her clothes were in disarray. She was a wretched sight.

Feng He was the closest and rushed over to help her up.

Not far away, two enormous snakes were now locked in combat.

Xiao Lü had grown to match its opponent’s size. The instant it appeared, it had opened its jaws and clamped down on the variegated serpent’s neck.

The variegated serpent retaliated, whipping its tail and striking Xiao Lü’s body. The force of their struggle was immense; birds nesting in the trees took flight from the commotion.

Lin Jingjing wiped the blood from her mouth and turned to watch the two snakes battling nearby.

Witnessing it from such a close distance was a breathtaking sight for all of them.

The viewers watching the live stream went wild. Comments began flooding the screen.

”Where did that giant green snake come from!?”

”AHHHH! Two snakes fighting! This is so intense!”

”Is that giant green snake helping them? Is it? IS IT!?”

”To the commenter above: yes, it is. And what’s more, that female soldier was the one who summoned it.”

”Whoa, she’s that strong? She can actually summon a snake?!”

In the viewing room, the officers stared at the screen, then at one another in stunned silence. Some of them frowned deeply, their eyes filled with confusion.

Beisang stared at the green snake. ’Don’t tell me Lin Jingjing manifested that with her spiritual power,’ he thought.

Yun Yiyou’s gaze fell upon the files again. He looked at the large black letter ”D” printed on them, then back at the giant green snake on the screen.

A curious, probing expression appeared in his eyes.

Captain Li, however, was not so composed. He cursed out loud, ”Son of a bitch, that nearly scared me to death!”

”These little rascals really know how to give you a heart attack.” Though his words were dismissive, the slight upturn of his lips betrayed his excellent mood.
