Subject Zero: Faceless

They came up onto the crest’s near shoulder into a picture being built, enemy soldiers dropping packs, unspooling wire, one crew wrestling a support post upright for what would, in another ten minutes, have been a fighting position with a clean field of fire down the exact trail Third Squad had just climbed.

Ten minutes was the whole of what they didn’t have.

The crest itself was smaller than it had looked from below, a shelf of open rock maybe forty paces across, ringed by the low stone the enemy detachment had clearly meant to build into cover before Third Squad arrived early enough to matter. Half-driven stakes marked out a perimeter nobody had finished stringing wire between. A single crew-served weapon sat uncrewed on its tripod, its operators forty feet away, carrying the ammunition that would have fed it.

Osei didn’t call the shot. She took it, the nearest soldier down before he’d finished turning toward the sound of boots on loose rock, and the crest broke open into something faster and closer than the shelf had been, packs and wire and half-driven stakes for cover instead of prepared stone, nobody dug in on either side.

Ashfall-Zero moved where Osei pointed him, rifle up, the loaner doing what a loaner rifle was for. Two rounds, then three, then the magazine change he’d drilled a hundred times on the rehearsal slope and never once needed under fire before this morning. Somewhere to his left, Ilsen was shouting numbers, position, distance, a count that didn’t match what Ashfall-Zero could see and didn’t need to.

Cade put two rounds into the man reaching for the uncrewed weapon before his hand closed on the grip, then a third into the loader beside him, and the tripod stayed where it was, unfed, for the rest of the fight. It was the work Cade always did — quiet, unremarked, the difference between a fight Third Squad could win and one it couldn’t, done without a word to anyone about it.

The enemy detachment, caught mid-arrival, fought back anyway, and fought back hard, soldiers who’d expected to spend the next hour digging instead spending it running for whatever cover the half-built position actually offered, returning fire from behind packs and stakes that weren’t built to stop anything. Ground changing hands by the yard rather than the acre, nobody more than thirty feet from someone shooting at them.

Osei fought the crest like a woman spending a budget she’d memorized, two rounds here, a shifted position there, her voice moving Wren and Ilsen across the open ground in short bursts that never left anyone standing still long enough to be a sum worth solving. He kept his lane. He hit some of what he aimed at. And somewhere in the middle of it he registered, distantly, that the competence carrying him through this was borrowed, Osei’s drills, Ilsen’s rhythm, a rehearsal slope’s worth of other people’s habits standing in for instincts he’d never been allowed to grow. The Foundry had taught his body to survive violence. It had never once taught him to be useful inside it.

Wren was the first one down — untouched, rolling hard behind a half-buried stake as an enemy soldier’s rifle swung to track the space she’d occupied a half-second earlier. Hollis broke from cover to cover her, closing the gap between them faster than the ground wanted to let him, and that was when it happened — a round catching him high in the side as he came around a stake, a wound a report would eventually log as ”wounded, moderate,” spinning him half a turn before the ground took the rest of the decision out of his hands.

He went down loud, a sound with no room in it for anything but the surprise of it. Third Squad’s fire didn’t slow, but something in the shape of it changed, everyone’s attention bending toward the same spot without anyone calling it. Wren was crawling toward him, one hand on her rifle, the other reaching for a dressing she hadn’t drawn yet.

An enemy soldier broke from the half-built position at a dead run, straight at Hollis, bayonet fixed, closing the distance faster than anyone still shooting could adjust for. Hollis got one hand on his own rifle and couldn’t get the angle, pinned by his own weight, the wound in his side deciding, for him, which way his body was willing to turn.

Osei’s voice cracked across the crest, aimed at no one in particular because there was no one close enough to do anything about it. ”Hollis—”

There wasn’t time left in that word for anyone to finish using it.

Ashfall-Zero didn’t reach for anything. There wasn’t time to reach. Reaching was what he’d done on the shelf, a door found by searching, a full second spent asking a question before it answered. This had no second in it to spend. His body simply went, the loaner rifle forgotten in his hands, closing the last stretch of ground between himself and the running man before any part of him had decided to.

He got there first by less than a stride.

What happened next had no shape he could have described afterward, and no one asked him to. His hands found the man before the bayonet found Hollis, and something moved through them into the body in front of him, force, or Calibration, or both at once, past the point where naming it mattered, and the man simply stopped.

He stopped. Mid-stride. Mid-breath. A candle going out, no smoke, no draft to blame.

For one full second nothing else happened at all. Then something did.

It didn’t come to him the way the shelf’s kill had, no directed pulse, no pressure sent outward and gone. This came inward, a pull he hadn’t asked for and didn’t know how to stop, something drawn off the dying man and into him the way water finds the lowest point in a room, fast, total, indifferent to whether he wanted it. For half a heartbeat he held something that wasn’t his, a fragment too fast and too whole to name, gone again before he could close a hand around it, leaving only the certainty that it had been there and now wasn’t, and that the leaving had cost the man in front of him something he’d never get back.

The body folded to the ground exactly as nothing living folds, no catch, no stagger, no last reflexive grip at a wound that wasn’t there, because there was no wound, nothing a report would know how to describe. Weight simply went to the ground, all at once, already unclaimed by whatever had been running it a moment before.

The silence that followed didn’t belong to the fight. The fight was still going, if barely. Somewhere off to the right, Ilsen’s rifle was still working, and the enemy detachment, its cover unfinished and its crew-served weapon still unfed, had begun the ragged, uncoordinated pull-back that meant a fight was ending rather than turning. But the six feet of ground around Ashfall-Zero and the man he’d just killed had gone quiet in a way gunfire wasn’t responsible for, a quiet that seemed to be spreading outward from that one spot rather than settling over the crest as a whole.

Hollis saw it from the ground, one hand pressed to his own side, close enough that there was no version of this he could have missed.

Wren saw it from behind her stake, rifle still raised, not firing, her eyes moving from the fallen man to Ashfall-Zero and back again as though the distance between the two facts wouldn’t close no matter how many times she measured it.

Ilsen, breaking from cover to cover his own path forward, slowed without seeming to decide to, and stopped.

The last of the enemy’s fire had slackened to nothing without his noticing when. Somewhere downslope, boots were moving fast and getting fainter, a retreat that no longer concerned itself with order. The fight was over. Everything still happening on this crest now was happening between the six of them and the dead man in the dirt.

Ashfall-Zero knelt where he’d landed, both hands open in front of him, empty, and did not yet have the first idea what he was holding instead. Whatever it was sat somewhere behind his ribs, cold and foreign and entirely his now, and every second he spent not looking at it directly felt like the only thing keeping it that size.

Somewhere behind him, Osei’s voice cut through the gunfire, sharp and immediate in a register he hadn’t heard her use since the flare went up on the shelf.

”Report! Somebody tell me what I’m looking at—”

She was moving toward them as she said it, and she stopped three steps short of where she’d meant to stand, close enough now to see for herself.

Nobody answered her.
