Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1198: Your Head Is Not

The next pair entered before the last traces of black-ashen flame had disappeared.

Lucavion and Valeria cleared the lane from opposite sides while the formation dimmed beneath their feet. Students shifted to make room, several still arguing over whether the final movement had been a feint, a reversal or something that should not have remained possible after Lucavion committed his weight.

The instructor restored order by calling two more names.

Weapons were checked, restraint seals climbed around the next pair and steel crossed again. Lucavion rejoined the waiting students near Varen and Rowen. Valeria remained closer to the boundary, answering a question about the unfinished continuation that had earned her first contact.

Jesse faced the new match.

The opening exchange was competent. One swordsman yielded too much ground, recognized the mistake and tried to recover the center with a thrust his opponent redirected from the stronger half of her blade. Jesse saw his rear foot fall behind before the instructor stopped them to correct it.

The student reset. Conversation about Lucavion’s final movement thinned beneath renewed impacts of wood, steel and reinforced practice weapons, and the session found its rhythm again while Jesse stayed a half-step behind it.

One pairing ended through a clean change of tempo. A mace user committed beyond the restraint placed upon his swing and forced the formation to intervene. Another student earned a contact by allowing a parry to travel too far before striking the exposed shoulder.

Jesse followed each exchange. A moment later, she could not have said who scored first.

Valeria’s anger returned instead, held beneath the stillness of her stance after the first point. Then Lucavion’s face emptied of amusement.

”You aren’t fighting me.”

Jesse adjusted her hand upon the hilt at her side and forced her attention back onto the present lane. The swordsman favored his lead leg. His opponent had noticed and threatened low, drawing his weight backward before attacking above. Advance, withdrawal, false entry, correction. Jesse read all four movements.

The formation chimed.

By the time the pale marker faded from one fighter’s chest, the result had already slipped from her.

Before she could dress it into anything more complicated, she had her answer: ’Not the flame.’

That should have been what held her. Lucavion had made a committed intercept cease to be true, left its danger hanging before Valeria after his estoc departed and produced a movement no one in the hall could explain.

Yet the impossible technique was already fading in Jesse’s memory. What remained was the pause after Valeria scored.

Valeria knew which openings Lucavion remembered, which habits he expected and when his answer came from history rather than the woman standing before him. Familiarity like that required time. More than Jesse had realized they possessed.

’I don’t like how well she knows him.’

At least that part was simple, a plain dislike with a plain cause. The rest had no cause she could name yet.

Valeria had not been satisfied by the point. She had looked across the lane with anger still controlled beneath her posture and told Lucavion what he was doing. He had not laughed. He had not made her repeat herself or soften the accusation. He had gone still, looked back through their exchanges and admitted the mistake.

Then his sword changed.

Most of the hall had merely seen him become serious. Jesse knew the difference between being measured by Lucavion and receiving his complete attention. The looseness remained in his shoulders, but everything unnecessary disappeared. His estoc stopped testing conclusions he believed he already possessed. His gaze closed around Valeria’s hands, balance and blade until nothing beyond the lane appeared to matter.

Jesse’s thumb moved across the callus beneath her forefinger.

She had stood beneath that attention before.

During their reunion duel, Lucavion had first watched her with something too close to pride. He recognized pieces of what he taught her and measured everything else against the girl who once struggled through his drills. Then her sword showed him what the missing years contained.

His smile vanished. After that, he fought her.

He had seen Jesse. He knew she was no longer the woman he left in Loria.

So why did watching him change for Valeria still catch beneath her ribs?

”Next diagnostic pairings,” the instructor called.

Students moved toward the lanes. Jesse released the pressure around her sword as the instructor’s gaze traveled down the list.

”Jesse Burns. Caeden. Second lane.”

Their difference in standing earned a few glances, but diagnostic pairings were chosen to expose habits, not defend rankings. Jesse crossed the hall. She was almost grateful.

A sword simplified matters. Distance. Weight. Timing. Another person trying to strike her before she struck him. Problems with edges and consequences. Those she understood.

Caeden waited opposite her, blade held plain. His stance sat low without becoming rigid, weight balanced through both legs and shoulders free of the tension that betrayed early commitment. He would not rush because the signal allowed it or offer an opening through impatience.

The formations rose. At the instructor’s signal, Caeden advanced.

His first movement tested the space before Jesse’s lead foot. She denied it with her blade, turned his next approach outside and shifted before he could press weight into her guard. He withdrew rather than contesting the stronger line.

For several exchanges, combat returned the world to its proper size.

There was only Caeden’s center, the angle of his weapon and the placement of his feet. He threatened high, entered behind a compact cut and abandoned it when Jesse’s point found the route toward his shoulder. No wasted commitment. No convenient opening.

Then he changed the distance.

Half a step brought his front foot closer before his weight followed, shortening the next attack without disturbing its balance. Jesse saw the line forming toward her forward side. Her rear foot needed to move first, carrying her torso clear while her blade closed the opening.

She began the response.

Caeden’s cut passed inside the descending guard and touched beneath her ribs.

Pale light flashed between them.

”Contact. Caeden.”

The formation held their weapons apart. Jesse looked down at the fading mark, then at the position of her own blade. It rested where the intercept belonged. Her rear foot had traveled in the correct direction. Another fraction earlier and the line would have closed.

Only one blunt thought remained: ’I saw it.’

That made the contact worse.

Caeden reset without celebration. His gaze remained on her for a moment longer than the point required, then returned to her sword.

Jesse loosened her grip and planted the heel of her rear boot against the stone. The first point was finished. It had already taken more attention than it deserved.

When the formation released them, she crossed the distance first.

Her opening cut carried the foundation of Reaping Form, broad enough to claim Caeden’s right side, but she shortened the rotation before the inherited sequence could determine her recovery. His guard met empty space. Jesse stepped inside the answer and brought her point toward his shoulder.

He turned clear by less than a handspan.

Jesse followed.

The clean arcs of the Burns style survived only where they remained useful. Between them, she changed the rhythm, delayed one return and drove another forward before her feet completed the expected turn. Caeden stopped testing her structure. His blade remained closer to his center now, each retreat chosen with care as she denied him the time to settle.

A familiar command steered the next movement: ”Take the ground.” She forced him toward the narrower edge of the lane and threatened high. Caeden answered as he had earlier, carrying her blade outward while preparing to step around the recovery.

Jesse let him begin, then dropped beneath his pressure and cut across the route his foot required.

Caeden pulled back sharply. Her edge passed before his thigh, close enough for the formation to brighten without registering contact. His next retreat was shorter and far less comfortable.

This was better. The testing patience had left his eyes.

Jesse drove him toward the same response again. The high threat formed. His weapon turned to carry hers outward—then released the contact early.

The angle of his guard changed.

He had understood. She had shown him that the first answer would fail, and he discarded it before she could punish him twice.

Lucavion’s amusement disappeared in her memory. His stance narrowed. Valeria raised her sword and found someone who had changed because she demanded it.

The old field command rose automatically: ”Stay in the lane.” Jesse’s cut had already traveled a fraction too far.

Caeden entered beneath it. She saw him move and tried to close the line, but her weight had crossed her front foot. His weapon slipped past the returning guard and touched high against her side.

Light flared.

”Contact. Match to Caeden. Two to zero.”

The restraint seized their weapons.

Jesse remained within the failed recovery, feeling where her balance had carried beyond clean reversal. Caeden had shortened the deflection. She recognized the adjustment, understood the new line and still allowed her cut to continue.

The loss itself required little consideration. Caeden earned both points. The second remained harder to dismiss.

He lowered his weapon but did not turn away. His attention passed over her stance, from the forward foot that had carried too far to the hand still tightened around her grip.

”Your body’s here.”

Jesse looked at him.

Caeden adjusted his grip before adding, ”Your head isn’t.”

The denial came easily. She could point to the narrowness of the contact or note that he had needed to change his answer before earning it.

Neither would make him wrong.

Jesse loosened her hand. ”I know.”

Caeden studied her for another moment, then nodded. No question followed. He stepped through the opening boundary and left the matter where she placed it.

Jesse remained until the last pale line withdrew from the stone.

Caeden barely knew her. He had spent two points across a lane from her and noticed anyway.

She sheathed her sword and returned to the weapon racks while the session moved on. The final pairings passed through compressed exchanges of pressure, correction and registered contact. One result required review after both formations flashed together; another ended when the instructor stopped an overcommitted strike before the barrier needed to intervene.

Jesse watched without trying to disappear into them again.

When the last contact sounded, scores were entered onto the instructor’s slate and the formations dimmed one lane at a time. Students presented their weapons for inspection, gathered discarded outer layers and separated into smaller groups. Several surrounded Valeria to ask about her continuation. Varen resumed explaining Lucavion’s final movement with the determination of someone who expected repetition to make the impossible reasonable.

Jesse answered when the instructor confirmed her result. Two to zero.

She knew where Lucavion stood before she looked.

Across the hall, he accepted his estoc after inspection and secured it at his side. He exchanged a few words with Varen, then turned toward the nearest exit as the group around him separated.

There would be other chances. They occupied the same block, attended the same practical sessions and shared enough acquaintances that another opportunity would eventually present itself.

Jesse’s hand closed over her sword’s pommel.

’And I’ll postpone it again.’

She crossed the hall.

Students passed between them, carrying weapons and folded uniforms toward the changing rooms. Lucavion noticed her before she reached him. His step slowed, and familiar amusement began to gather in his expression.

”Lucavion.”

He turned toward her fully.

Jesse stopped within arm’s reach. Her fingers left the pommel, and for a moment she said nothing.

The amusement faded slightly as he waited.

”Come with me.”
