Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1180: The Closed Route

The Warenne seal rested beneath Gervase’s thumb as he entered the Office of Sanctioned Contests.

The room possessed none of the grandeur its title might have suggested. Two long counters divided petitioners from shelves of numbered ledgers, while framed regulations occupied the walls between plain brass lamps. The Academy settled witnessed disputes, sparring permissions, formal challenges, and exhibition requests here; ceremony would only have slowed the clerks required to make violence orderly.

Gervase approved of the arrangement.

The registrar at the nearest counter finished marking a ledger before extending one hand. ”Purpose?”

”A sanctioned challenge.”

The folded request passed between them, its dark seal unbroken. The registrar inspected the impression, noted Gervase’s name, and moved through the remaining questions with practiced economy. Proposed terms could be reviewed after the opposing student had been entered. Preferred grounds were subject to availability. Witnesses would be appointed by the Academy unless both parties requested an eligible alternative.

”Proposed opponent?”

”Lucavion.”

The name required no hesitation. Gervase watched the registrar’s pen descend toward the appropriate line, carrying with it the decision he had completed the previous evening.

”You intend to challenge Lucavion?”

The voice came from his right.

Thalor Draycott stood at the adjoining counter with one hand resting beside an open agreement. Blue silk crossed his shoulders without a fold out of place, and the silver-gray eyes directed toward the Warenne seal held more recognition than surprise. An Academy clerk farther down the counter was comparing the agreement against a larger exhibition ledger.

Gervase kept his thumb upon the folded request. ”That is no concern of yours.”

Thalor glanced toward the document lying open before him. ”At present, it rather is.”

There was no challenge in his tone, which made the answer more intrusive, not less.

Gervase’s attention moved to the heading visible above Thalor’s hand. He did not need to read the compact clauses beneath it. Marisse’s name appeared first, followed by the registered terms of the End-of-Term Exhibition and the blank which Thalor had just filled with his signature.

’So that was her selection.’

He had known that Marisse’s wager allowed her to prepare an opponent for Lucavion. The identity of that opponent had not yet passed through the student body, but the countersignature before him left little room for uncertainty.

The registrar followed his gaze. ”The representative appointment was entered this morning.”

Nothing in the statement suggested that Gervase’s request had become invalid. Marisse’s exhibition lay months ahead, whereas a sanctioned challenge could be arranged much sooner. The Academy had not granted Thalor ownership over every contest involving Lucavion merely because one future match had acquired institutional attention.

Gervase turned toward him. ”Do you object?”

”Not at all.” Thalor returned his attention to the agreement and wrote a final notation beside one of its lower clauses. ”Submit it.”

The immediate permission caught against Gervase’s expectations.

He had anticipated territorial courtesy disguised as a warning, or some polished observation about avoiding interference with Marisse’s wager. Instead, Thalor appeared no more troubled by the challenge than he was by the clerk blotting the countersignature beside him.

”You see no conflict?” Gervase asked.

”I see several possible outcomes.” Thalor set down the pen. ”None discourages me.”

The registrar waited with professional stillness, his own pen suspended above Gervase’s form.

Gervase’s thumb pressed against the edge of the seal. ”Then why involve yourself?”

Thalor regarded the folded request once more, not as a provocation or an intrusion upon his position, but as another document whose contents might eventually become useful.

”A preliminary measure would be useful.”

For a moment, the office seemed to narrow around the paper beneath Gervase’s hand.

”A preliminary measure?”

”Whichever of you loses will tell me something.”

Thalor offered no elaboration. He did not need one.

Sanctioned exhibitions established hierarchy before the contestants ever entered their grounds. The important stage was not necessarily claimed by whoever fought first; it belonged to the confrontation the institution had already taught its audience to anticipate. Marisse’s wager, her appointed representative, and the End-of-Term schedule had placed Thalor at the end of Lucavion’s public progression. Any earlier challenger would be measured against that expectation.

If Lucavion defeated Gervase, then Gervase became proof of what Lucavion could do before facing the opponent the Academy had been prepared to watch. If Gervase won, he exposed Lucavion’s limitations for Thalor and diminished the importance of defeating him afterward. Refusal served Lucavion almost as well; preparation for the registered Exhibition supplied a respectable reason to decline lesser contests.

And if Gervase submitted now, after Thalor had openly welcomed it, every observer with sufficient political education could interpret him as a willing instrument of Draycott preparation.

’A trial weight placed upon another man’s scale.’

The insult lay in how little insult Thalor intended.

”You assume my result would belong to you,” Gervase said.

Thalor’s expression remained polished, touched by an interest too mild to become amusement. ”Results belong to whoever understands them.”

It was neither a prohibition nor a claim of precedence. Gervase remained entirely free to proceed. Thalor had merely shown him what that freedom was presently worth.

Gervase looked toward the registrar. ”Has the appointment already been entered?”

”Yes. The countersignature completes it.”

The registrar touched the edge of Gervase’s folded request. ”Do you still wish to submit the challenge?”

His hand did not release the paper.

The direct route had not closed permanently. After the Exhibition, Thalor’s claim upon the anticipated stage would be resolved one way or another. Before it, Gervase could challenge Lucavion only by accepting a subordinate place in someone else’s arrangement.

”No,” he said, drawing the request back across the counter. ”The grounds require revision.”

The registrar crossed out the unfinished entry and reached for the next document in his stack. Thalor had already collected his copy of the representative agreement. He offered neither satisfaction nor parting remark before turning toward the door, as though Gervase’s decision had confirmed something too ordinary to deserve further attention.

Gervase slid the sealed request inside his coat.

His pace remained measured when he left the office. He adjusted his right cuff at the first stair, then corrected it again upon reaching the landing, although the edge had been aligned the first time. Beneath the fabric, his fingers pressed the folded letter firmly enough for the seal to leave its shape against his palm.

’Preliminary.’

The word followed him farther than Thalor had bothered to.

By the time Gervase returned to his room, the pressure in his hand had eased. He removed the challenge request from his coat and laid it upon the desk. The Warenne seal remained intact, its impression no less authoritative because the Academy had not received it.

He opened the lower drawer and placed the request inside.

It had not been abandoned, only postponed.

The drawer closed beneath his hand, yet the Rotunda did not close with it. Lucavion’s victory there had never depended upon defeating Gervase in a regulated contest. He had governed the circumstances under which Elowyn answered, turned refusal into a public declaration, and then allowed the Salon to carry the meaning beyond the identities they had worn.

Gervase had intended to undo that result by confronting him upon a stage he could not reshape. Thalor had made that route temporarily useless.

That did not mean Lucavion’s interpretation had to remain the only one.

If Elowyn later accepted a respectable association with Gervase under ordinary conditions, then the Rotunda would become what it should always have been: a decision made within an examination, beneath artificial identities and an audience Lucavion had deliberately provoked. Her judgment outside that room would possess a different weight.

’A judgment made with the cost visible.’

Gervase drew a fresh sheet onto the desk.

An opening-term reception was being arranged for students connected to territorial houses beyond the central provinces. The gathering had no relation to the Rotunda and required no contrived pairing. House Warenne’s mountain jurisdiction provided obvious grounds for participation, as did the coastal responsibilities attached to House Caerlin. Elowyn’s examination placement offered another justification more than sufficient for any guest recommendation.

The reception would place her among heirs and retainers accustomed to governing territories where distance from the capital made practical alliances necessary. She would receive introductions unavailable through the ordinary first-year gatherings, potential academic contacts, and recognition suitable to a minor baronial heiress whose results had already exceeded the assumptions attached to her title.

It was an opportunity she ought to have been offered regardless.

Gervase dipped his pen and addressed the request to one of the upper-year organizers aligned with his household. He did not prescribe how Elowyn should be approached, nor suggest that her attendance be treated as an obligation. He merely identified the relevance of her territorial background, summarized her examination performance, and recommended that a formal invitation be extended.

Nothing in the letter compelled acceptance, and that distinction mattered.

Crude pressure would only reproduce the accusation Lucavion had made in the Rotunda. A proper invitation preserved refusal while ensuring that the value of acceptance required no explanation. Elowyn could judge the opportunity herself, away from black flame, public provocation, and a man determined to make every alternative resemble surrender.

’Let her answer when the room belongs to no one.’

The ordinary language of the recommendation followed quickly. Gervase completed the organizer’s title, the reception reference, and the grounds for inclusion without correction.

Only at the guest line did his pen slow.

Lady Elowyn Caerlin.

He formed her name more carefully than the surrounding script, then read the request once from beginning to end. It offered recognition, useful association, and nothing that could reasonably be mistaken for a demand.

The unopened challenge remained inside the drawer.

Gervase folded the fresh letter and pressed the Warenne seal beneath Elowyn’s name.
