Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1151: What Remained After

The group began to divide near the residential towers.

Toven resisted longer than everyone else. He had transformed Lucavion’s refusal to explain his dancing into a personal dispute, and his voice continued along the frost-lined path even after the commoner residence came into view.

”You answered six questions without telling us anything.”

Lucavion appeared to consider that an achievement. ”Consistency is generally considered a virtue.”

”Not when you are consistently avoiding the question.”

One of the Linwen twins called something about Lucavion’s former career as a traveling ballroom criminal, while Caeden continued insisting that the footwork had come from combat. Lucavion entertained both theories without confirming either, offering enough amusement to keep everyone speaking and not enough truth to satisfy a single person.

Elara listened from farther back.

Someone tried asking how long ago he had learned. Lucavion gave the matter unnecessary consideration before answering, ”Several mysterious years.”

Toven released another suffering sound.

Elara’s lips almost curved.

The eastern path split from the main road soon afterward. Marian offered the commoner group a final good night, Mireilla waved, and Toven allowed himself to be carried away while continuing his argument. Lucavion remained at the junction for a moment after the others moved ahead.

Then he turned.

His gaze passed over the students remaining on the main path and settled upon Elara.

Only briefly.

The mana lamps caught his black eyes and the faint smile at the corner of his mouth, but the distance left her nothing she could interpret with confidence. He turned away before she decided whether an acknowledgment was required, and soon the silvered hedges concealed him.

Elara’s thumb brushed the side of her index finger.

She stopped the motion and lowered her hand.

’Again?’

The examination had ended. Scores would come later, along with questions about Gervase, the First Flame, and whatever Lucavion had revealed during the dance. None required an answer tonight.

Her thoughts ignored the schedule.

”It starts mistaking the room for home.”

The words returned with the same quiet weight they had carried beneath the dying music. Elara could still see the tired edge beneath Lucavion’s smile when he spoke of furniture left outside after the rooms changed.

His former House could fit the metaphor. So could his family, Isolde, or the years following his banishment. Lucavion had given her enough to support several interpretations and too little to choose among them.

That was very much like him.

Yet she had also felt his hand tighten when she asked about Loria. She had felt the slight error in his step before he recovered it, a mistake too small for the audience to see and too real for his partner to overlook.

Elara disliked relying upon tone and instinct. Both could be manufactured, particularly by someone who treated misdirection as casually as Lucavion did.

Physical mistakes were harder to manufacture.

Footsteps continued behind her at a measured pace.

She knew the rhythm. Cedric walked heavily when irritated, almost silently when alert, and with deliberate evenness whenever he wished to speak but was waiting for privacy.

The others gradually pulled ahead. Aurelian and Marian continued their conversation around the next bend, while Selphine followed several paces behind them. She glanced back once, her gaze moving between Elara and Cedric, before tightening her cloak and continuing without comment.

Elara felt a small discomfort that had little to do with the cold.

The argument between her and Cedric had ended days ago, but the ease preceding it had not fully returned. They still ate together, trained together, and exchanged information without effort whenever the subject concerned the Academy or Elara’s concealed identity. Other matters had become more careful.

Cedric paused before asking questions.

Elara considered how much to tell him.

She had wanted that space. His protectiveness had begun pressing against every choice she made, until concern became something indistinguishable from command. Yet she also knew where it came from. Cedric had watched her lose her name, her core, and her place in Loria before following her into exile.

Fear did not excuse everything it produced.

It did make the result harder to resent cleanly.

”Elowyn.”

She slowed, allowing Cedric to come alongside her.

They walked in silence for several steps. Frost had gathered between the stones bordering the path, breaking softly beneath their shoes, while the residential tower rose beyond the next courtyard with warm light filling its lower windows.

Cedric looked ahead as he asked, ”What happened in the Salon?”

Elara knew he did not mean the dance alone.

She began with Gervase, reducing the confrontation to what Cedric needed. Gervase had watched her during the earlier rounds, approached immediately after Lucavion’s invitation, and treated her refusal to reconsider as though it required correction. Whatever reason his Role Seal had provided, his argument soon passed beyond the examination and became a judgment about whom Elowyn Caerlin ought to accept.

”He had never spoken to you before tonight?” Cedric asked.

”No.”

”And Warenne has no relevant relationship with Caerlin?”

”None that would explain that degree of interest.” Elara adjusted the edge of her cloak as they passed beneath another lamp. ”He may have possessed a legitimate reason to approach my assigned identity, but the way he continued did not belong to the role.”

Cedric’s jaw tightened. ”Then he used suppression magic.”

”After Lucavion provoked him.”

”That does not improve it.”

”No,” Elara agreed. ”It does not.”

Silence held between them briefly.

”We should learn more about him,” Cedric said.

Elara looked toward him. A few days ago, that sentence might have been an announcement that he intended to investigate while expecting her to remain safely uninvolved. The wording now left room for both of them.

”We should.”

Cedric met her gaze, recognizing what she had acknowledged. After a moment, he nodded. ”I’ll ask about Warenne’s position inside the Academy. You may have access to different information through the Magicians’ Block.”

The tension beneath Elara’s cloak eased by a small degree. Neither of them mentioned the correction.

They continued toward the courtyard.

Cedric waited until the path widened before turning to the other subject. ”What about Lucavion?”

Elara had expected the question.

”He moved before Gervase reached me,” she said. ”Lucavion had not read his Role Seal, yet he had already decided to invite me. Once the confrontation began, he seemed unusually prepared for its direction.”

”You think he noticed Gervase earlier.”

”I think he may have known Gervase would approach.”

Cedric’s brows drew together, but he did not immediately decide what that meant for her. ”Lucavion notices more than he admits when he has a reason.”

The lack of surprise made sense. Cedric knew the history attached to Lucavion’s old name, even if the two had never shared anything resembling trust.

”The dance gave me another question,” Elara continued. ”His technique was formally trained, but several habits beneath it were Lorian. I changed the cues to test whether he recognized them.”

A faint trace of amusement disturbed Cedric’s seriousness. ”You tested him in the middle of the dance.”

Elara raised an eyebrow. ”You sound surprised.”

”I’m not surprised.”

”You look amused.”

”I am.”

”At what?”

Cedric glanced at her. ”You.”

She stared at him, and the faint curve of his mouth became more visible.

For a heartbeat, the years between their childhood and this Academy courtyard seemed less complicated. Warmth reached Elara before she could decide whether to permit it.

She looked forward again. ”He followed every altered cue immediately.”

Cedric’s amusement faded. ”Did you ask him?”

”Yes. He admitted that he used to be Lorian.”

Cedric’s steps slowed by half a pace. Surprise did not reach his face; neither of them had required Lucavion to confirm the country of his birth. The absence of his surname did not erase what it had once been.

”Why would he admit that now?”

”He was explaining where he learned.”

”That is convenient.”

Elara’s gaze shifted toward him.

Cedric kept his attention on the path. ”He has spent years avoiding his former identity. At the Academy, he presents himself as Lucavion: a commoner without a House or a history anyone can easily examine. Now he tells Elowyn Caerlin that he was Lorian.”

”I pressed him into answering.”

”You made him uncomfortable,” Cedric said. ”That does not mean he gave away something he had never considered revealing.”

The distinction irritated Elara because it deserved consideration.

Cedric drew one hand beneath his cloak as the wind crossed the courtyard. ”If questions about him arise later, he has already placed the first pieces. He was Lorian. He knew noble customs. He received formal instruction. Each fact appears harmless on its own, and anyone who hears the rest afterward will arrange it around the explanation he supplied first.”

Selective truth.

Lucavion had described the principle himself. Silence created space, and people filled that space with whatever their nature encouraged them to believe. A carefully chosen fragment could govern everything placed beside it later.

”You think he was preparing an account of his past.”

”I think he rarely reveals anything without considering how it may be used.” Cedric looked at her then. ”That does not mean every word was false.”

The concession caught Elara before she could prepare an argument.

Cedric’s expression remained guarded. ”Someone can speak sincerely and still choose the most useful moment to do it.”

Elara remembered Lucavion’s missed step, the change in his grip, and the tired humor that followed. Cedric’s warning did not erase those details. It merely allowed another interpretation to stand beside them.

”What else did he tell you?” Cedric asked.

His voice carried no accusation.

Elara could repeat the metaphor. Cedric understood Lorian nobility, Isolde’s position, and the scandal surrounding Lucavion’s banishment. He might place the words more accurately than she could.

That was precisely why she kept them.

Cedric would treat the confession as another piece of evidence, already shaped by everything he believed about the man who had stood beside Isolde while Elara’s life collapsed. Perhaps his suspicion would prove correct. Yet if Lucavion had spoken sincerely, repeating the words before Elara understood them would turn a private moment into testimony.

She was not ready to do that.

”He said the lessons belonged to his earlier life,” Elara replied. ”Before the Academy.”

Cedric watched her for a moment. ”And?”

The question was gentle enough that refusing became more difficult.

”That was the relevant part.”

He knew her too well to mistake the answer for a complete one. His eyes remained upon her for several steps, while Elara kept her gaze on the residence lights beyond the courtyard.

Just days ago, the omission would have begun another argument.

Tonight, Cedric released a slow breath. ”If he is choosing which parts of himself you receive, be careful.”

Elara’s shoulders tightened despite herself, but Cedric continued before she could answer.

”I know you’re investigating him. You want to understand what actually happened, and I cannot ask you to accept my conclusion simply because I reached it first.” His mouth tightened around the admission, suggesting that it had not come easily. ”But Lucavion understands people. If he controls which truths appear and when, the timing may matter as much as the truth itself.”

Elara looked at him.

Cedric had not called her naïve. He had not ordered her away from Lucavion or treated curiosity as betrayal. He had offered what he saw and left the decision where it belonged.

Perhaps he was learning.

Perhaps both of them were.

”I’ll be careful,” she said.

Cedric nodded and asked nothing more.

They reached the residence stairs. Warm light spilled through the windows and turned the frost along the railings pale gold.

Elara stopped before the first step. ”Reilan.”

Cedric turned.

An apology waited somewhere beneath several years of pride, guilt, and arguments neither of them had known how to finish. Elara could not yet arrange it into words that would not surrender the point she had needed him to understand.

Instead, she said, ”Thank you.”

His brows drew together. ”For what?”

”For asking.”

Understanding changed his expression slowly. Then he gave her a small nod.

”Good night, Elowyn.”

”Good night.”

Cedric entered the residence first.

Elara remained outside for another breath, watching frost gather along the dark stone. Her thumb passed once over the side of her finger before she let the hand fall.

Cedric might be right. Lucavion may have offered exactly enough vulnerability to make her question the history she knew, preparing the ground before later truths arrived.

Or strategy and sincerity may have occupied the same words.

Elara could not yet distinguish between them.

For years, certainty had been easier to carry than unanswered questions. It had protected her from doubts that threatened to reopen wounds she had barely survived.

Now, however, comfort was no longer enough.
