Chapter 1195: The Valeria He remembered

”Contact.”

The formation held them apart while pale lines travelled across the lane, confirming the registered strike and resetting the restraint seals.

Valeria used the pause to restore her footing.

The cost of the unfinished continuation announced itself at once. Heat pulled through her reinforced rear thigh, the knee carrying more strain than the landing should have demanded, while the slight shift beneath her boot confirmed that her balance had not settled cleanly. Her turn had also left her side exposed. Had the exchange continued beyond the registered contact, Lucavion’s estoc would have possessed an answer.

The continuation remained incomplete.

It had also worked.

Against Lucavion.

Satisfaction rose before caution could diminish it. She had shown him the Olarion recovery he remembered, allowed him to enter the opening it promised and changed the sequence only after he committed. For one exchange, his certainty had placed him exactly where she wanted him.

Valeria looked across the lane.

Lucavion had recovered the half-step the impact forced from him. He was not watching the fading contact marker. His gaze rested upon her hands, then travelled down the line of the zweihander toward the rear leg still carrying the cost of the turn.

”That was new.”

The acknowledgment should have satisfied her.

Instead, the earlier irritation returned.

New. Faster. Faster hands.

Every observation had been correct, yet each reduced what she had done to another improvement attached to the Valeria he already understood. She had not rebuilt her swordsmanship so he could catalogue the changes while leaving the original conclusion untouched.

”You moved too early.”

Lucavion’s attention lifted to her face. ”Why?”

”You were already entering before I chose the recovery.”

A faint crease appeared between his brows. ”You showed me the form.”

”I showed you—”

Valeria stopped. Her grip shifted against the zweihander as she searched for the part he was still failing to see.

”The beginning,” she said. ”I showed you the beginning, and you decided where it would end.”

Lucavion glanced toward the blade between her hands. He understood the individual exchange. That much was visible. The pattern behind it had not yet settled.

”And?”

Her mouth tightened.

”When I delayed the cut, you had already started moving. When I shortened the arc, you were answering the longer one.” She drew a breath, frustration pressing the next words out more sharply. ”Every time I changed something, you corrected.”

”Because you changed the form.”

”No.”

The rejection stopped him.

Valeria held his gaze across the lane. ”You expected the old one.”

Lucavion fell quiet.

”You aren’t fighting me,” she said.

For the first time, his expression emptied completely. ”What?”

”You’re fighting the Valeria you remember.”

Neither of them spoke while the lane reset.

Then his gaze shifted—not away from her, but inward through the exchanges already completed.

The realization, however, did not come to her from the final exchange alone.

Throughout the opening of the match, Lucavion had been reading Valeria through memory. He recognized the Olarion structure in her first movements and treated that recognition as certainty. When she advanced, he anticipated the recovery he remembered. When she altered the timing, he assumed the change was only a faster version of the same sequence. His counters had been precise, but they had answered conclusions he had reached before her attacks were complete.

That was why he had entered too soon.

Why his intercepts had met empty space when she shortened the arc.

Why he had stepped into the continuation she abandoned.

Lucavion had not been careless. He had been correct against the wrong opponent—the Valeria preserved in his memory, whose habits and limits he believed he understood. Each successful adjustment only reinforced the mistake. He saw her changes as refinements to a familiar method instead of evidence that the method itself had changed.

Valeria watched recognition rebuild them. His foot beginning its evasion before her delayed strike. The intercept committed against the full arc she had shortened. His entry beneath the continuation she abandoned. The final step into an opening that existed only because memory promised she would create it.

The last trace of amusement left his face.

”...Right.”

The admission carried no excuse.

Lucavion lowered the estoc by several inches. ”That was foolish.”

Then his stance changed.

The difference was small enough that most students beyond the formation might have missed it. Valeria did not.

His feet narrowed into a more economical alignment. The looseness remained in his shoulders, but none of it drifted into idleness. His estoc no longer waited beside the line where an Olarion recovery should appear, nor did his weight grant her the comfortable initiative he had allowed throughout the opening exchanges.

His gaze changed with it.

It touched her breathing, the adjustment of her forward hand, the pressure carried through her rear foot and the present balance beneath the zweihander. He was no longer following the shape of a form toward the answer he remembered.

He was watching her.

The anger within Valeria eased almost immediately.

This was what she had wanted from him—not praise for a clever continuation, nor surprise at the years added to her training. His sword had finally acknowledged that familiarity did not equal understanding. He no longer stood across from her believing he knew where she would end.

For the first time in the match, he was waiting to discover it.

The formation completed its reset with a low chime.

A smile returned to Lucavion’s face.

”Then I owe you an apology,” Lucavion said.

Valeria’s hands tightened around the zweihander.

”Do you?”

”I did not respect your pride as a swordsman.”

The words struck more sharply than his blade had.

Her expression hardened. ”My pride?”

”Your right to be judged by what you can do now, not by what I remember you doing.” His gaze remained fixed on her. ”I treated your changes as improvements to a sword I already understood. I assumed the old Valeria was still beneath them.”

Valeria felt heat rise beneath her collar.

”That is heresy indeed.”

Lucavion’s smile widened.

”Against a swordsman?”

”Against me.”

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Lucavion inclined his head, the gesture carrying more seriousness than any apology could have managed. ”Then I will correct it.”

Valeria raised the zweihander into guard.

”See that you do.”

The smile that returned carried none of the lane’s light amusement; it cut wider, lit by the delight he showed whenever a sword set something uncertain in front of him.

Valeria knew that expression.

She had not seen it once during this fight.

Fresh anticipation rose through her as she settled the zweihander between them. She had wanted Lucavion’s attention.

Now she had it.

And the easier part of the duel had just ended.

*****

The formation released them.

Lucavion moved first.

His front foot crossed the distance without the probing caution he had shown before, the estoc travelling ahead of him in a line too narrow for the zweihander to strike without first clearing it. Valeria turned her blade to receive the thrust upon its stronger half.

—CLINK!

The point vanished beneath the contact.

Lucavion’s wrist rolled, carrying the estoc under her edge before it returned toward the inside of her elbow. Valeria lowered the hilt to close the line, but he did not withdraw. His blade followed the pressure around her guard and threatened her ribs from below.

She turned through her hips rather than chasing it with her hands. The crossguard swept his point aside, and the zweihander’s length came across with enough weight to force him out.

Lucavion yielded one step.

Only one.

Earlier, the same motion would have taken two.

Valeria brought the blade up between them, but he was already close enough to threaten her forward wrist. She shifted her grip. The point changed with it, rising toward her shoulder before her hands completed the transition.

’So this is your answer.’

He was not trying to defeat the zweihander’s authority once it formed. He was denying her the room required to establish it.

Valeria stepped into him and drove the flat across his centre. Lucavion slipped beyond the strongest part of the blade, giving exactly enough ground for the steel to pass before returning behind it. His estoc darted toward her throat.

She caught it near the base of her blade.

—KLANG!

He disengaged beneath.

The point threatened her ribs.

Valeria rotated the hilt down, closed the line and turned her hips to carry the deflection through her body. Lucavion followed the contact instead of retreating, his blade sliding around the crossguard as he stepped toward the space opened by her weight transfer.

Her rear foot struck the stone.

The zweihander swept outward.

Lucavion withdrew beyond its path, but the instant she attempted to restore her guard, he entered again.

Every movement cost her another.

A cut purchased distance, but not enough to recover freely. A parry removed one threat only for the estoc to circle toward another. Even when his point never reached her, its presence forced her hands, hips or feet to account for it.

Valeria’s structure began to narrow.

’Then hold.’

Mana gathered inward.

Sword of Olarion: Knight’s Resolve.

No light burst across the lane. A restrained golden current settled through her legs and joined at the hips before rising through her core, shoulders and hands. The zweihander grew steady between them—not heavier in truth, but integrated so completely with her stance that moving one required moving all of her.

Lucavion’s next contact struck the flat.

—CLINK!

This time, the blade did not shift.

His eyes sharpened.

Valeria advanced.

The zweihander claimed the centre, its point forcing the estoc outward while her grounded steps took back the space he had stolen. Lucavion disengaged, but Valeria turned with him. Her cut descended diagonally, carrying enough authority that avoidance became his only reasonable answer.

He moved beyond it.

Valeria allowed the momentum to remain.

The blade passed the orthodox conclusion. Her rear leg reinforced, her hands shortened, and the descending line tightened into a horizontal cut.

Lucavion had expected the continuation. He retreated before it reached him.

—SWOOSH!

Valeria continued anyway.

He ducked beneath the shortened arc. Rather than arresting the turn, she let her hips carry farther and drove the crossguard toward his face. Lucavion drew back, the guard passing close enough to disturb his hair, and Valeria stepped through the rotation before he could recover.

The zweihander returned to the centre from below.

Lucavion gave ground again.

Then again.

Satisfaction sharpened through her.

’It was not only surprise.’

The form worked because no movement was required to end where doctrine placed its recovery. Residual weight became another position; that position offered another line. Even when Lucavion avoided each continuation, he had to surrender space to do it.

Valeria drove him toward the boundary.

His attention changed as he retreated. He stopped following the apparent destination of the blade. His gaze dropped toward her rear foot, rose to the loading of her hips, then settled upon the minute movement of her forward hand along the grip.

He was no longer avoiding attacks.

He was searching for the point where choice became commitment.

Valeria pressed before he could find it. A rising cut displaced his estoc; she carried the motion over her shoulder and descended, then shortened the grip as the blade passed low.

Lucavion withdrew from the expected sweep.

She turned after him.

His estoc thrust toward her chest.

Valeria knocked it outward.

Instead of recovering, Lucavion allowed the parry to carry his blade. His wrist rotated with her force, the point circling around the outside of her guard before returning toward her shoulder.

Valeria caught it.

—CLINK!

He yielded to the contact, let the blade slide beneath hers and thrust again from the altered line.

Her eyes narrowed.

A failed thrust had become contact. Contact became disengagement. The disengagement became another thrust, and at no point did the estoc return to the neutral position from which such attacks were meant to begin.

He had not copied her movement.

The estoc possessed too little weight for that.

He had copied the thought.

’You—’

Irritation flared, followed immediately by something far less orderly.

Excitement.

This was what she had demanded from him. He had looked at what stood before him, found the principle beneath it and answered through his own sword.

Valeria broke the line with the zweihander’s weight and entered another continuation.

Lucavion touched her blade lightly.

He did not oppose it. A small pressure near the middle changed the descending path by a fraction. Valeria corrected through her hips and continued into the shortened rotation.

His estoc remained against the flat.

The pressure changed again.

Her intended sweep drifted farther outward. Valeria forced it back, her rear leg taking the added weight as the turn passed beyond orthodox balance.

Heat pulled through her thigh.

’No.’

She could continue forward. The form still gave her two viable attacks from the position.

But Lucavion was no longer standing before either.

He had altered the direction of her momentum without attempting to stop it, then stepped away from the lines into which she could carry it. Valeria tried to reverse her hips.

Her rear foot slipped half an inch.

Too late.

Lucavion left the committed arc and entered beside her exposed torso.

—TAP!

Pale light flashed against her ribs.

The formation locked both weapons in place.

”Contact.”
