Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1157: Three Places

By the time the first rush around the rankings faded, the courtyard outside the female residences had broken into smaller groups.

Some students had already left for breakfast or morning lectures. Others remained beneath the projection, comparing placements and arguing over results they had learned only minutes earlier.

Elara was still there.

The Magicians’ Block rankings remained pinned beside the newly displayed Martial Arts list. She had already seen her own eighth place. The number had settled well enough until the second list gave her another distraction.

5 — LUCAVION

Her gaze stayed there.

His martial ability could justify it. She had sparred with him and had no difficulty accepting that part of the result.

The rest of his examination period made fifth harder to understand.

His oral examination had exposed gaps in formal magical knowledge that should have embarrassed a much younger student. His affinity test had refused to classify him properly. Other evaluations had gone considerably better, though nobody outside the faculty possessed enough information to know how the Academy had balanced them.

And somehow the final answer was fifth.

Mireilla followed her gaze. ”That one bothers you?”

”It interests me.”

”That sounded very different.”

Elara ignored her.

A student near the projection touched one of the names.

A smaller field of light opened beneath the list.

Several people leaned closer.

”Oh,” Mireilla said.

The public board held more than placements.

Each name could open a summary record: broad examination categories, notable distinctions, comparative strengths, and enough of the Academy’s reasoning to show the shape of a student’s performance. Detailed examiner notes remained private.

That discovery spread quickly.

Students began selecting names.

Thalor Draycott’s profile appeared first on the Magicians’ side. The record was almost irritatingly clean—excellent theory, advanced structural work, precise mana control, and strong practical evaluations. His first place had been built across the entire examination period rather than rescued by a single exceptional result.

Lucien’s record followed. His strengths were broader and more martial, with excellent control and strong practical judgment alongside his formal education. The difference between first and second looked less dramatic once the summaries were beside each other.

People immediately began arguing about it anyway.

Elara barely listened.

Her attention returned to Lucavion’s name.

One touch would answer part of the question.

She almost reached for it.

Then her eyes shifted left.

Back to the Magicians’ Block.

5 — ISOLDE VALORIA

Three places above her.

That number had bothered Elara from the moment it appeared, though the crowd had given her little room to examine why.

Now the detailed records were available.

She knew Isolde’s education too well to dismiss the placement as reputation. House Valoria had provided every advantage expected of a ducal heir, but advantages still had to survive the examination room.

And Elara wanted to know exactly how well Isolde had used them.

Mireilla was saying something behind her. Selphine had returned from inside the residence with a folded sheet tucked beneath one arm.

Elara heard neither clearly.

Lucavion’s fifth place could wait.

She touched Isolde’s name.

A new panel unfolded across the projection.

ISOLDE VALORIA — MAGICIANS’ BLOCK

A few students nearby noticed the name and slowed.

Elara ignored them.

The Academy kept the complete examiner reports private, but the public summary showed enough to understand the shape of a student’s performance. Written evaluation, oral theory, mana control, affinity assessment, practical examinations, Rotunda judgment.

Isolde’s record had very few weak points.

Her written performance sat among the strongest in the Block. Structural analysis was marked particularly high, along with the portions that required identifying flaws in unfamiliar magical constructions.

Elara continued downward.

The oral examination had gone well too.

That bothered her more.

Magister Selenne had examined both of them, and Selenne was hardly the sort of person who softened a standard because a ducal name appeared on the other side of the desk.

Mana Control followed.

Clean.

Her affinity evaluation showed exactly what anyone familiar with House Valoria would expect: exceptionally refined Light, supported by Ice, both expressed with enough precision that the Academy had little difficulty classifying them.

Then the Rotunda.

Strong again.

Elara read the record to the bottom.

There was no convenient weakness waiting for her.

Behind her, the students who had gathered around Isolde’s name had begun discussing the result. Some knew her reputation from Loria. Others knew only the title that had crossed the border with her.

The Porcelain Flower.

One girl remarked that fifth was impressive even for a Valoria. Another immediately blamed access to private tutors, only to be reminded that tutors could prepare someone for an examination but could not sit it for them.

That ended the argument quickly enough.

Elara kept looking at the projection.

She could have blamed House Valoria.

It would even have been partly true. Isolde had grown up with access to instructors, libraries, cultivation resources, and expectations that most students would never receive.

Elara knew those advantages better than anyone standing around her.

She also knew what Isolde had done with them.

’She really did well.’

The admission came easily.

The feeling that followed did not.

Elara wanted to beat her.

There was little nobility in the thought, and she found she did not particularly care.

Isolde had taken fifth.

Elowyn Caerlin had taken eighth.

Three places.

She closed Isolde’s record.

Mireilla had moved close enough to see over her shoulder.

”Finished investigating?”

Elara touched her own name.

”Comparing.”

”That sounds healthier.”

”It wasn’t meant to.”

Selphine arrived beside them as the panel changed. ”Why are you looking at Isolde Valoria’s grades?”

Elara’s finger paused for the smallest moment.

”She ranked above me.”

A perfectly sufficient answer.

Selphine looked toward the display, then at Elara.

She accepted it.

The new record opened.

ELOWYN CAERLIN — MAGICIANS’ BLOCK

Elara went straight to the written evaluation.

Her irritation eased.

The result was excellent.

The comparative bracket placed her among the strongest written performers in the entire Magicians’ Block, close enough to the highest results that several students behind her began noticing the same thing.

”Wait.”

”Her written result is above Valoria’s.”

”How did she finish eighth?”

Elara let the whispers continue.

At least this part made sense.

Formal magical theory had always been one of her strongest areas. Even with deductions where Arcanian terminology differed from the frameworks she had learned, the Academy had found little to punish.

She moved down.

Oral Examination.

Her satisfaction faded.

Selenne had been severe.

The public summary gave only broad reasons: excessive reliance on a formally correct framework in one answer, slower adaptation after an altered premise, another deduction for identifying the accepted solution before addressing the actual structural concern beneath the question.

Elara remembered all three.

At the time, she had considered at least two of them arguable.

Looking at the result now did not improve her opinion.

”Harsh?” Selphine asked.

Elara glanced at her. ”Very.”

Mireilla leaned enough to read the category. ”Bad?”

”No.”

”Then you have a strange definition of very harsh.”

Elara moved on.

She had already seen Isolde’s oral result. Selenne had deducted from her as well. Whatever irritation Elara carried toward the examiner, Isolde had not escaped the same standard.

The difference there was real, though hardly enough by itself to explain the final order.

Affinity came next.

Excellent.

The Academy had still avoided giving a clean conventional classification to the silver-light manifestation that followed her Frost response in Crystal Hall, but the evaluation itself was strong.

Combat Awareness.

Reasonable.

Mana Control.

Elara slowed.

Isolde had done better.

That one she conceded immediately.

Her own result was good. Isolde’s was cleaner.

There were smaller differences elsewhere. Some favored Elara, others Isolde. Weaponship had cost Elara more than she would have liked, though the result was hardly disastrous for a mage.

The records were beginning to form a clearer picture.

Isolde had not beaten her through one overwhelming advantage.

She had simply surrendered fewer points across the examination period.

Elara’s written score was stronger. Her affinity result held comfortably. Several practical categories remained competitive.

But Isolde’s record was cleaner.

Consistent.

Annoyingly so.

Marian joined them sometime during the comparison, still fastening one cuff after apparently discovering the rankings later than everyone else. Mireilla quietly informed her that she had missed several excellent public reactions.

Elara barely followed the exchange.

Something still looked wrong.

Not wrong with the Academy’s calculation.

With her own record.

Eighth felt lower than the strengths displayed across the upper half of the summary.

A student behind them noticed it too.

”Look at her written distinction.”

”That’s near Draycott’s.”

”Then where did she lose it?”

Elara’s eyes traveled farther down.

There.

ROTUNDA JUDGMENT — 79

Her finger stopped.

Seventy-nine.

Compared with everything surrounding it, the deduction stood out immediately.

The Rotunda returned to her.

The assigned identity.

The first measure.

Gervase moving toward her once the second began.

Then Lucavion crossing the floor before he reached her.

His hand offered.

His ridiculous ease.

The older Lorian steps that came afterward.

And her own choice to accept.

Elara stared at the number.

Her first instinct was to connect it directly to Gervase.

That explanation was tempting.

Too tempting.

The Rotunda had evaluated more than whether she had selected a pleasant dance partner. Everyone had entered with an assigned identity, circumstances, relationships, and an objective. The Academy had watched what they did with those things.

Elara had known that.

She had simply stopped treating all of it as equally important once the Salon began moving.

Her gaze remained on the seventy-nine.

Gervase had been involved.

Lucavion had been involved.

And somewhere inside that exchange, she had lost more points than she realized.

Selphine followed her attention.

”Ah.”

Elara looked at her.

”You have an idea?”

”Possibly.”

That was enough to sharpen Elara’s focus.

Then another thought arrived.

Lucavion had stepped in before Gervase ever reached her.

Not after the man revealed enough of himself to justify suspicion.

Before.

At lunch, Lucavion had admitted he suspected something, while insisting the ceremonial flame’s reaction itself had surprised him.

Technically precise.

As usual.

Elara looked again at the Rotunda score.

Then toward the courtyard beyond the residence.

Her irritation found a much more convenient target.

’You knew something.’

Exactly what, she still intended to find out.
