Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1192: Crossing Swords (2)

”Today’s session is diagnostic.”

The instructor allowed the word to settle before continuing. Several students had already begun looking toward the marked combat lanes, and Valeria could distinguish those disappointed by the lack of formal stakes from those who understood that a diagnostic session could be considerably less forgiving than a ranked match.

”You have all submitted a declared martial discipline. The Academy also has your examination records, your cultivation rank and enough measurements to fill several archives.” His gaze passed across the three lines. ”None of that tells us what remains when another person begins interfering.”

A form performed alone could preserve every intended transition. Distance remained obedient, the next step arrived where it had been practised, and no weapon entered from the wrong angle to demand an imperfect answer. The instructor wanted to see those imperfections. He spoke of disrupted footing, denied space and techniques forced to recover before reaching completion, illustrating each point with a small adjustment of the scabbard in his hand rather than turning the explanation into a lecture.

The students would spar against opponents near their current Martial standing. Anyone could nominate a student placed within three positions of their own rank, although every request would pass through the instructors before becoming a pairing.

”Proximity makes the request appropriate,” he said. ”It does not make acceptance compulsory. If we consider the match useless, repetitive or needlessly dangerous, you will choose again.”

Attention shifted throughout the hall.

Some movements were immediate enough to betray decisions made before the rule had finished leaving his mouth. A spear user near the eastern lane looked two places down his line; the student he had chosen noticed and adjusted her grip in answer. Others searched more carefully, recalling names from the standings and measuring them against the weapons now visible across the floor.

The rankings had existed as numbers until that moment. They had decided placement, drawn congratulations and supplied arguments for students who needed them. Now each position defined a narrow field of acceptable opponents, and the distance between two names carried the possibility of an actual confrontation.

Valeria required no search.

Her attention remained forward, but the awareness of Lucavion several places to her right became harder to ignore. Fourth and fifth. No instructor could object to the distance between their rankings.

Whether the match would be considered useful was another matter.

’It will be.’

The instructor moved on before anticipation could take firmer shape. This was not a ranking challenge, and no result produced today would alter the board. The seals fixed to their weapons would communicate with the formations surrounding each combat lane, registering clean contact and arresting enough force to prevent a scoring strike from becoming a serious injury.

The protection had limits because every protection did.

Weapon and bodily reinforcement were permitted within the restrictions assigned to each pairing. External projections were not. Any technique designed to kill rather than overcome, or any attempt to confuse, overwhelm or bypass the protective formations, would end the match immediately.

”If I decide that your exchange has stopped showing us anything useful, I will stop it,” the instructor said. ”You may believe you require one more strike. You may even be correct. You will still lower your weapon.”

No one questioned the condition.

Valeria had trained beneath commanders who required obedience because their rank demanded it and others who received obedience because hesitation around them felt foolish. The instructor belonged to the latter category. He did not raise his voice or offer consequences. The hall had already become quiet enough that none were necessary.

Across the central line, Rowen turned his head.

Varen had done the same.

Their gazes met through the space separating the weapon groups, and the response passed between them with the ease of an exchange repeated often enough to require no discussion. Varen’s hand moved to the grip above his shoulder. Rowen shifted one foot, already turning out of his line.

The instructor did not wait for either of them to speak.

”No.”

Varen stopped. ”Why not? We’re within three.”

”I can count.”

Rowen’s expression remained controlled, although his attention stayed upon Varen. ”Then what disqualifies the match?”

”You have enough history. And this is not a lecture about rivalry.”

A trace of dissatisfaction entered Varen’s face. Rowen concealed his own more successfully, but neither could argue that the assessment was wrong.

The instructor reminded them that the exercise existed to expose each student to useful resistance. Valeria listened without looking away from him. The explanation was sound, but it was also convenient. Rowen and Varen were established rivals, and any injury between them would be easy to interpret as the result of an old dispute rather than a controlled exercise. If one of them were seriously hurt, the instructor would have to answer for allowing the match. If the contest became too aggressive, he would have to explain why he had permitted it after recognizing their history.

Refusing the pairing avoided every consequence at once.

Valeria suspected that was the real reason for the decision. The instructor was not merely protecting the value of the exercise. He was protecting himself from the possibility that something would go wrong and leave him responsible for it.

Varen adjusted the greatsword across his shoulder. ”Doesn’t mean this one would end the same way.”

”It would not,” Rowen said. ”You would lose more quickly.”

Several students failed to conceal their reactions.

Varen looked back at him. ”Want to test that?”

”And that,” the instructor cut in, ”is why neither of you will be choosing the other. This is a diagnostic session, not another excuse to continue an argument you have failed to settle elsewhere.”

The answer held long enough for both men to recognize that the matter had ended.

Varen released the grip of his greatsword first. ”Fine.”

Rowen inclined his head. ”Understood.”

Neither liked the decision, but both recognized the authority behind it and the martial sense supporting it. Their attention separated reluctantly, moving across the remaining students as they reconsidered the possibilities within reach of their rankings.

Valeria watched them do so.

The strongest students in the Martial Arts Block had not arrived as empty positions awaiting Lucavion’s presence. They possessed histories of their own—old comparisons, unfinished contests and rivals whose habits had been learned through repeated contact. Rowen and Varen needed no new reason to test one another. Their problem was that everyone responsible for teaching them already knew it.

By refusing the obvious pairing, the instructor had forced both toward unfamiliar resistance.

He had also established that a reasonable nomination would be approved only if the match offered something the instructors had not already seen.

Valeria’s gaze shifted toward Lucavion.

That would not be an obstacle for her.

The instructor began taking nominations from the first line.

A spear user near the eastern boundary named the woman two positions above him. She accepted before the instructor finished checking their records, and after confirming that neither possessed an established match history, he assigned them to the third combat lane. Another request followed from among the swordsmen, this one rejected because the difference in cultivation would force one student to spend the entire exchange surviving rather than demonstrating his style. The rejected student chose again, received approval and moved aside with his opponent to await their turn.

The process settled into an efficient rhythm. Names were called, standings checked and pairings either approved or redirected with little discussion. Each accepted match altered the remaining possibilities, prompting students who had waited too long to reconsider the opponents still available within three positions.

Valeria had no reason to reconsider.

When the instructor looked toward the heavy-weapon line, she spoke before anyone else could.

”Lucavion.”

Several heads turned toward the central group.

Lucavion did not. He had already been watching her, one hand resting lightly against the pommel of his estoc, and the amusement gathering in his eyes suggested that the nomination had confirmed something rather than surprised him.

The instructor checked their names against the projected standings. Fourth and fifth appeared beside one another, followed by their examination records and declared disciplines. His attention remained upon the projection for a moment longer than it had with the previous requests.

”It records that, you have fought before.”

It was not phrased as a question.

”We have,” Valeria said.

”Then explain why this would be different from the pairing I just refused.”

Valeria had expected the objection. Her personal reason would not satisfy him, but she had no need to invent another. The match possessed value beyond her desire to experience it.

”Our standings are adjacent, and our practical results are comparable. Our disciplines are not.” She rested one hand upon the grip of her zweihander. ”My style relies upon committed force, sustained pressure and control of structure. His relies upon precision, timing and adaptation.”

The instructor glanced toward Lucavion’s estoc before returning his attention to her.

Valeria continued without embellishment. ”Neither of us fights as we did during our previous encounters. If the purpose is to observe how a declared style responds when its preferred conditions are denied, the contrast is suitable.”

The answer was entirely true.

It simply stopped before reaching the simpler truth beneath it.

She had wanted to cross swords with Lucavion again.

Not to settle an argument or correct the standings. A number on a board could not tell her what had changed in the years since their earlier encounters, nor could watching him fight someone else reveal how those changes would feel when directed against her. She had known the reach of his weapon, the rhythm of his feet and the moments in which his apparent carelessness became intent.

She wanted to know which parts of that knowledge remained useful.

More than that, she wanted to discover what her own swordsmanship had become against someone capable of remembering what it had been.

’Steel will answer that more honestly than either of us could.’

The instructor turned toward Lucavion. ”Any objection?”

Lucavion considered Valeria with unnecessary gravity. ”Would it matter?”

”It might.”

”Then I should be careful.” His thumb moved once across the estoc’s pommel. ”She takes rejection poorly.”

Valeria’s expression tightened. ”You have never rejected a challenge from me.”

”Exactly. I have survived by making excellent decisions.”

The familiarity of the exchange moved through the surrounding students more clearly than any explanation could have. A few looked between them with renewed interest, no longer assessing the proposed match as a simple contest between fourth and fifth.

Caeden shifted his sword against his shoulder and looked away with the resignation of someone witnessing an expected inconvenience arrive on schedule.

Jesse’s reaction was quieter. Her attention had fixed upon Valeria as soon as the nomination was made; now it moved between the zweihander across Valeria’s back and the estoc at Lucavion’s side. The Lorian student beside her said something that received no answer.

Valeria registered the silence and returned her attention to the instructor.

He reviewed their records once more. Whatever concern their prior history created, the contrast remained difficult to dismiss. A committed heavy-blade style against a precision weapon; pressure against redirection; established structure against a swordsman whose strength lay in denying preparation.

Unlike Rowen and Varen, they had no recent sequence of rematches from which the instructors could predict the exchange.

”Approved,” he said. ”Second combat lane. You will wait until called.”

The projection shifted. Their names moved from the general standings into a shared pairing bracket, and the formation beneath the second lane answered with a low pulse of light.

Lucavion inclined his head toward her as though accepting an invitation she had offered in private.

Valeria held his gaze.

Until that moment, the fight had existed only as something she intended to request. Now the Academy had recorded it, assigned the ground beneath their feet and placed the authority of the session behind its beginning.

Her anticipation tightened into something sharper.

The next time she drew her zweihander, Lucavion would be standing across from it.

The first matches began soon afterward.

Steel crossed beneath the pale boundaries of the combat lanes, each clean contact producing a brief flare from the formations before the force could pass fully into its target. The restraint seals did not remove impact or consequence. Students still lost balance, guards collapsed, and one swordsman discovered that a registered contact against his ribs remained painful even when the Academy prevented the blade from opening them.

The instructors interrupted often. Some exchanges ended after a weakness repeated itself twice; others continued beyond an apparent victory because the response mattered more than the contact that had produced it. Between matches, corrections were delivered quickly, and the next pair entered before the previous students had finished reconsidering what had gone wrong.

Valeria watched without allowing the movement of Lucavion at the edge of her vision to become a distraction.

Different disciplines filled the hall with competing rhythms. Spears controlled distance until swordsmen forced their way inside. Heavy weapons drove opponents backward, only to expose their wielders whenever commitment became excess. The standings predicted much, but not enough to make any exchange meaningless.

Gradually, the approved names disappeared from the projection.

The second combat lane emptied.

Its formations dimmed, cleared the previous record and brightened again.

The instructor looked toward them.

”Valeria Olarion. Lucavion. Take your positions.”
