Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1197: Beyond Commitment (2)

The third contact quieted more than the second combat lane.

Across the hall, students who had been following the duel between their own preparations stopped pretending otherwise. A practice sword lowered near the central markings. Someone at the spear lanes lost an instructor’s question halfway through.

”He feinted the block.”

The voice came from somewhere behind Varen.

”No, he changed halfway through.”

”He couldn’t have. His weight was already set.”

Most of them had enough experience to recognize a feint, which only made what they had seen harder to place. Lucavion’s foot, shoulder and mana had all supported the intercept. By every ordinary measure, he had committed.

Varen’s brow tightened. ”He made her guard the wrong side.”

”She chose that side,” Rowen said.

”Because he put a sword there.”

”He didn’t.”

Varen looked at him. ”We all saw it.”

Rowen did not answer immediately. His gaze remained fixed on the black-ashen traces fading from the lane.

”That is the problem.”

Jesse said nothing. Her sword hung lowered beside her, but her grip had tightened around the hilt, and unlike the students arguing over feint and redirection, she was no longer looking at his estoc. She was watching the fading black flame.

Inside the lane, the formation began pulling the two fighters apart.

No one looked away.

The formation released Valeria’s zweihander first.

Her body still turned toward the defense Lucavion had abandoned, Valeria lowered the blade. Even after the black-ashen traces faded, the warning they had left behind persisted along her skin.

Knight’s Arc had placed him. Knight’s Descent had entered before his footing recovered. She had seen the intercept forming, altered her blade to defeat it, and then the estoc had been beneath her guard.

’No. It didn’t appear there. He moved it.’

She had watched him do it.

The boundary opened with a low pulse.

The instructor entered before either of them could leave. Whatever matches remained elsewhere in the hall had become someone else’s responsibility; his attention went first to the fading contact marker beside Valeria’s ribs, then to the last remnants of black flame withdrawing along Lucavion’s estoc.

”What happened?”

Valeria looked at him.

The instructor gestured between them. ”At the end. What did you see?”

”An intercept.”

”And?”

She hesitated, irritation rising at the inadequacy of the answer. ”He abandoned it.”

”Then why did you defend against it?”

Because it had still been there.

The answer sounded senseless before she spoke it. Valeria adjusted her grip upon the zweihander. ”I read the line correctly. His foot was set. His shoulder followed it. The mana did as well.” Her gaze returned to Lucavion’s weapon. ”Then the blade moved somewhere else.”

A student beyond the lane muttered, ”So it was a feint.”

”No,” Valeria said immediately.

The word carried farther than she intended. She drew a breath.

”A feint asks you to believe an attack might come. That one was coming.”

The instructor tilted his head. ”Until it wasn’t.”

”Yes.”

”And you still answered it.”

Valeria’s jaw tightened. ”Yes.”

Reconstructing the sequence from the marks across the lane, the instructor arrived at the same contradiction. When he spoke again, the question was no longer for her.

”Lucavion. How did you leave a threat behind after your sword was gone?”

Lucavion had been listening without interruption. The crazed edge of his smile had softened, though it had not disappeared, and he turned the estoc once, watching the final thread of black-ashen flame curl around the narrow steel before it vanished.

”I didn’t leave it behind.”

The instructor waited.

Lucavion seemed to realize the answer had explained nothing. His gaze shifted to the empty line where the threat had been, then back to Valeria. ”She was already looking at it.”

”Looking at what?”

”The attack.”

”Which part of it?”

Lucavion opened his mouth, then stopped. The estoc rose between them, its point coming to rest on the line Knight’s Descent had threatened to cross, but the sentence he reached for broke off before it formed.

”The point,” he said at last.

Valeria’s eyes narrowed.

”Not only the point.” He set his shoulder behind the estoc, front foot following, slowly enough for the nearest students to see it. ”This. And—” He frowned down at his own shoulder as though the question had made it unexpectedly inconvenient. ”If the sword says I’m going there and the shoulder doesn’t...”

He moved the point toward the intercept and left the shoulder where it was. The threat went out of it at once.

”She won’t take it,” he finished.

Varen had already begun testing the same position. He planted one foot forward, turned his shoulder, raised an imaginary greatsword across the line. Once he had loaded his weight onto the front foot, he tried to pull the movement elsewhere, and his expression tightened.

”If I leave from there, the next cut comes apart.”

”Moving the point is easy,” Rowen said. His attention had stayed on Lucavion’s weapon hand. ”Making everything behind it support another attack is not.”

Valeria felt the truth of that in her rear leg. Her own continuation allowed several endings only until momentum and weight passed the point where choice became commitment; after that, changing the attack meant dragging her whole body against a decision already made.

”If everything was right,” the instructor said, ”how did you get out?”

Lucavion looked down at his wrist. His fingers flexed once around the grip. He repeated the beginning of the intercept, stopped near the instant of commitment and turned the point beneath the imagined blade.

”I changed it.”

Varen stared at him. ”Yes. We saw that.”

Lucavion looked back at him, and Varen pushed on.

”How?”

The estoc moved again. Intercept, turn, entry. Lucavion watched his own hand perform it, and the motion was no more willing to translate itself into language the second time.

”I was there,” he said slowly. ”Then I didn’t need to be.”

”That explains even less.”

”It wasn’t finished yet.”

”It looked finished.”

”It wasn’t.”

Rowen lifted one hand before the exchange could circle into repetition. He was studying the spaces between Lucavion’s movements rather than the movements themselves. Valeria did the same. Absurd as the distinction sounded, his body had just proven it.

The instructor’s gaze dropped to the estoc. ”And your flame? Why could she still feel the first threat after your blade left it?”

For the first time, uncertainty crossed Lucavion’s face without irritation.

”It worked better with it.”

The instructor waited.

Lucavion pressed his thumb against the guard. A thread of black-ashen flame surfaced along the steel, too faint to carry heat past his hand. ”It made it...” His eyes stayed on the flame. ”Harder to ignore, I think.”

”You think?”

”I hadn’t done it before.”

That answer disturbed the watching students more than any of the others. Whispers returned along the edge of the lane. Some still called it a feint; others decided he had simply changed direction faster than Valeria could follow. Neither explanation survived the position in which the exchange had ended, but both were easier to accept than an attack that had stayed real after its weapon was gone.

Valeria kept her eyes on Lucavion. The intercept had been genuine, her read of it correct, her answer the one any swordsman of her training would have chosen.

’He punished me for being right.’

Lucavion could not have said why it worked, though three things had made it work. A trained eye trusts an attack once its signs agree: the foot, the shoulder, the weight beneath the point, the mana gathering behind it. His instincts knew what a swordsman like Valeria needed to see, and he had supplied all of it. Where another body would have locked into the commitment, his could release one chain of tension and take up another. And the Flame of Equinox, laid along a danger that already existed, drew the eye of any mana-sensitive perception; when the estoc left, the weight of that perception did not leave at the same speed. The sword moved. The danger stayed for a fraction of a breath.

Without his understanding of the sword, the first threat would never have convinced her. Without his physique, he would have been trapped inside it. Without the Flame, a swordsman of her level would have corrected too quickly.

Valeria had only the short version of it: a strain running through her rear leg, a flat that had met nothing, and a defense she had built, perfectly, against a blade that was no longer there.

What he had made stood between them, unnamed, while the hall struggled to decide what it had witnessed.
