Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1196: Beyond Commitment

The formation pulled them apart.

Valeria stepped back with the zweihander as pale light passed between their weapons and began resetting the restraint seals.

Her rear leg protested when her weight settled. Strain ran from the upper thigh into the knee, following the route through which she had attempted to reverse the unfinished continuation. Her boot had slipped only half an inch, but she still felt the instant her balance stopped governing the blade and began travelling with it.

Lucavion had not opposed the zweihander.

He had touched it.

The first contact changed its path by almost nothing. Valeria compensated through her hips and continued. His pressure shifted again during the transfer, and her rear leg accepted more of the sword’s momentum.

Each correction remained possible.

Until she tried to reverse.

’That was the limit.’

The form still offered attacks ahead of her. She could tighten the radius, extend the rotation or carry the blade into either line available from the turn. Once her hips committed and the rear leg caught the weight, however, she could not take the entire structure backward.

Lucavion had found the instant when continuation stopped offering choice.

Valeria raised her gaze.

He stood across the lane with the estoc lowered near his side. His black eyes were fixed entirely upon her now, absent of the earlier teasing or the familiarity through which he had first measured her.

Then his mouth curved.

Then his mouth curved, wider than any smirk he used to end serious conversations, and sharp with the delight of a swordsman handed something to take apart.

”Hehe...”

The quiet laugh crossed the lane.

”That technique is really interesting.”

Lucavion lifted the estoc and moved it through the empty air.

A small swing. A turn of the wrist. The point drifted aside as though carried by an unseen blade, then circled back along a shorter line. No mana accompanied it. Nothing about the motion should have been threatening.

Valeria remained silent.

He repeated it.

This time, the point extended, yielded to the imagined contact and curved beneath it without returning to guard.

Something became wrong.

During the previous exchange, she had parried one of his thrusts outward. He should have withdrawn, recovered the centre and attacked again. Instead, his wrist had turned with her pressure. Her parry carried the estoc around the crossguard and placed its point upon another line.

She had caught the second threat.

He used that contact to create the third.

’He never recovered.’

Or rather, he had changed what recovery meant.

Every displacement preserved the point’s relationship with its target. A failed thrust became contact. Contact became a turn around resistance. The turn placed the estoc upon another line from which it could threaten again.

Her zweihander carried one movement into another by preserving momentum.

Lucavion’s estoc preserved its line.

The realization tightened Valeria’s chest. He had done more than find the weakness in her form. While she was still using the continuation against him, he had taken the idea beneath it and translated that idea into the language of his own weapon.

Not afterward.

During the exchange.

The strain in her rear leg remained, as did the exposed instant when the continuation became committed. Lucavion knew where it was now. If she offered the same structure again, the smallest pressure could guide her toward the same failure.

Then the structure would have to change.

Valeria tightened her grip around the zweihander.

Excitement rose before caution could contain it.

He had found the flaw. He had understood the idea. More importantly, he had learned from her while their blades were still moving.

This was why she had chosen him.

The lines around the lane dimmed one after another. Only the final seal remained between them, its light thinning as the formation prepared to release them.

Valeria adjusted her hands upon the grip.

’Then watch the next one.’

The final seal vanished.

Valeria moved with it.

The zweihander rose through a familiar Olarion entry, its edge clearing the centre before descending toward Lucavion’s shoulder. He slipped beyond the cut and waited near the recovery, refusing the opening that had cost him the first point.

Valeria let the blade pass lower.

Her rear leg reinforced. Her forward hand shortened upon the grip.

Lucavion’s estoc touched the same portion of steel he had exploited before.

The pressure was slight.

It had only ever needed to be slight.

This time, metallic-gold mana travelled down the zweihander before the contact could spread. Valeria did not reinforce the entire weapon equally. She gathered the Metal affinity along its lower half, tightening the structure through which Lucavion’s pressure attempted to redirect the edge.

—TING!

The sword moved.

But not by as much.

Lucavion noticed. His eyes shifted toward the gold current at the same instant Valeria felt the difference through her hands.

”Not yet.”

She did not force the continuation.

Before the rotation crossed the point of commitment, Valeria arrested it. The zweihander settled into orthodox guard, its remaining weight carried into her hips rather than allowed to decide the next cut.

Lucavion had already adjusted for the second attack.

His lead foot corrected by half a step.

’I don’t have to continue.’

The realization was simpler than everything she had attempted before. She did not need to reverse the full momentum of a committed zweihander. She only needed enough control to prevent that commitment from becoming inevitable.

’I only need the choice.’

Valeria advanced again.

She shortened her grip.

Lucavion waited for the turn.

Valeria abandoned it and thrust along the centre instead. He carried the point aside, but the next preparation came before his estoc could settle. Her hands shifted as though she would abort once more.

This time, she continued.

The zweihander tightened into a horizontal cut and forced him back.

—SWOOSH!

Lucavion escaped the edge. Valeria allowed the weapon to return almost completely into orthodox recovery before a pulse of Metal mana hardened a different portion of the blade. The remaining motion passed back through her wrists, and what appeared to be the end of the sequence rose into another diagonal attack.

He evaded again.

Barely.

Excitement entered her movements without disturbing their discipline.

’Again.’

Each preparation now offered two Valerias. One completed the inherited form. The other carried its ending elsewhere. Lucavion could no longer answer either through certainty. His black eyes followed the reinforcement travelling through the steel, the position of her grip and the load settling into her legs.

He was waiting for her decision.

Valeria felt a smile touch her mouth only after it had already appeared.

She showed him the unfinished continuation once more.

The zweihander descended, passed beyond its orthodox conclusion and began drawing her hips into the shortened rotation. Lucavion respected the movement now. He shifted toward the safe line outside the continuation’s committed arc.

Exactly where its weakness told him to go.

Valeria sent Metal mana through the lower blade.

The rotation stopped early.

Lucavion’s foot had already carried him toward the answer demanded by her newer pattern. Before he could correct, Valeria lengthened her grip and returned to the foundation he had expected her to leave behind.

[Sword of Olarion: Knight’s Arc.]

The zweihander swept outward.

Golden mana extended along the edge—not released for raw destruction, but held to the breadth of the cut. The Arc occupied nearly the entire lane, removing retreat and denying Lucavion the inward step from which his estoc could interfere.

Only one angle remained.

Lucavion took it.

His rear foot crossed away from the expanding edge. His weight shifted sharply to complete the evasion, while the estoc turned across his body to guard the line through which he escaped.

’There.’

Knight’s Arc had done its work: it had placed him.

Valeria’s front foot struck the stone before the sweep completed. Metal reinforcement travelled back through the zweihander, preserving its structure as she drew the blade from the Arc’s ending into a brutally direct line.

Lucavion’s weight remained upon the wrong foot. His estoc was occupied outside his centre. The boundary denied him another retreat, and the angle he had used to escape no longer offered room for a second evasion.

Valeria entered.

[Sword of Olarion: Knight’s Descent.]

The distance vanished beneath one precise step.

Her zweihander came down along the structural line opened between Lucavion’s displaced guard and unsettled footing, carrying none of the broad excess of the Arc before it. This cut was narrow. Final.

Lucavion was caught beneath it.

For the first time since the score became equal, Valeria saw no ordinary path by which he could escape.

’Mine.’

The blade closed.

Lucavion’s black eyes sharpened.

Knight’s Descent closed upon him.

Lucavion’s front foot adjusted against the stone.

His shoulder settled behind the estoc, bringing the narrow blade across the line of descent while his weight followed beneath it. The movement was compact, late only because Valeria had made it so, yet every part agreed with the defense he had chosen.

A narrow thread of black-ashen flame gathered around the steel.

It did not flare. It clung to the estoc and sharpened the line already formed by his body, giving the threatened intercept a presence Valeria could feel against her skin.

He would turn Descent outward.

Valeria knew the answer.

She shifted Metal mana through the lower half of the zweihander, hardening the angle Lucavion intended to catch, and altered the cut just enough to pass through his defense before the estoc could redirect it.

His wrist moved.

Something became wrong.

The black-ashen line remained before her. His shoulder, balance and step still pointed toward the intercept she had read. The threat persisted with such certainty that her instincts continued warning her away from it.

But the estoc was no longer there.

Its point had slipped beneath the zweihander.

There had been no visible break. No withdrawal. One moment, Lucavion’s blade was turning toward Descent; the next, his wrist had carried it elsewhere while the first movement somehow remained before her.

’What—’

Valeria’s eyes caught the steel below her guard.

Her body had already answered the other line.

She shifted her grip and drove Metal mana farther along the blade, buying the same few inches of control that had preserved her choices before. The zweihander obeyed, its descent turning away from the black-ashen threat.

Away from nothing.

Lucavion had made her change toward an answer he was no longer giving.

The realization barely began before he moved.

His body passed through the space her correction had opened, shoulder turning beneath the descending flat as the estoc folded close along his side. The zweihander crossed beside his head.

—SHNK!

Steel passed steel with less than a finger between them.

Valeria stepped through the missed cut and turned immediately, dragging the point back onto line before its weight could carry her farther. Lucavion had already crossed behind her shoulder.

She pivoted upon her front foot.

The zweihander rose between them, but the black-ashen presence still clung to the abandoned line. Her instincts warned of danger where his blade no longer stood, and that single contradiction delayed her hands by less than a breath.

It was enough.

She found the estoc below her guard, its point already travelling toward the opening beside her ribs.

Lucavion’s crazed smile sharpened.

”Got you.”

—TAP!

Pale light flashed across Valeria’s side.

The formation seized both weapons and forced them apart before her rising blade could complete its answer.

For one suspended instant, Valeria remained inside the position he had created, her sword guarding the threat she had read while his actual steel rested against the contact marker.

She knew what a feint looked like. She knew how a swordsman withheld weight, disguised intention or changed an attack midway.

That was not what she had seen.

His first movement had been correct. His foot, shoulder, balance and mana had all supported it. She had read the threat exactly as years of combat had taught her to read one.

And somehow, that was precisely why she had chosen the wrong answer.

”Contact.”
