Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1186: What the Blade Became

What could the Academy teach someone who had handled a blade across two lives?

Lucavion let the question remain with him as students left the lecture hall around him, carrying Arcten’s terminology into smaller arguments about household forms, regional methods and whether commitment deserved a more dignified name.

’A blade across two lives.’

The phrase flattered itself through a small dishonesty.

As Bruce, Lucavion had handled steel, and few people in his first world had understood its measure better. Years of fencing had refined his control over distance, timing and intention until fractions of movement separated a clean point from a wasted opening. Olympic competition had demanded discipline that most practitioners never approached, while victory required him to read an opponent, construct pressure and act within margins too narrow for conscious correction.

The rules had never made that skill false. They had made it precise within circumstances this world did not share.

Bruce had fenced upon regulated ground against an opponent carrying a comparable weapon, while both bodies remained subject to familiar physical limits. Mana could not change acceleration halfway through an attack, reinforce a failing leg or stretch effective reach beyond what muscle and bone allowed. His opponent could not exchange a foil for an axe, answer a thrust with flame or continue fighting after suffering an injury that should have ended the bout. Most importantly, victory had never required Bruce to drive steel through the person before him.

Lucavion had carried those foundations into a world that respected none of those boundaries. Distance remained distance, and timing still governed every opening, but mana could distort both within a heartbeat. Strengthened bodies survived errors that once would have decided an exchange, monsters rejected human proportions, and unrestricted weapons made any comfortable assumption dangerous.

His second life had forced him to translate Bruce’s discipline through survival. Lucavion could recognize a weak foundation, punish excessive commitment and demonstrate why one recovery preserved more choices than another; however, experience had arranged that knowledge according to immediate consequence—what worked, what failed and what killed the person who misunderstood the difference.

Arcten had supplied four stable terms for principles Lucavion’s body already understood.

’So, perhaps not entirely useless.’

One lecture had not redeemed the entire Martial curriculum, but Lucavion could grant it that much. The Academy might never teach him what a sword did. It might teach him how this world had organized everything that could be done with one.

Lucavion closed his introductory text and joined the students filing into the aisle. The class dispersed according to the quiet divisions that permanent placement had begun creating around them: Jesse left with the students from his row, maintaining the distance he had kept since entering the hall, while Rowen disappeared among another cluster without looking for a reason to remain. Varen acknowledged Lucavion with a brief nod before following the route projected above his card.

Elayne no longer appeared simply because the Academy had placed them in the same corridor. Lucavion had expected that change, though expectation did little to make the altered pattern less visible.

Caeden remained beside him as they left through the same aisle. They had barely cleared the doors when Valeria approached from the lower rows, carrying herself with enough composure to suggest that the previous two days contained nothing she needed to avoid. She joined them without hesitation and directed the conversation toward Arcten’s demonstration before Lucavion could reward the effort by mentioning anything less respectable.

Valeria wanted to know whether he had recognized the third figure’s deception before Arcten called upon him. Lucavion admitted that he had, although he credited the projection with making its intentions unusually polite. She rejected that description, Caeden pointed out that a real opponent would have concealed the retained mana more carefully, and their discussion continued down the broad passage as students separated around them.

”The instructor expected you to see it,” Valeria said after Caeden moved ahead to avoid a group carrying polearms.

”He has seen me work before.”

”When?”

”During the weaponship examination.”

”Instructor Arcten was the one grading you?”

Lucavion glanced at her. ”You make that sound dangerous.”

Valeria kept her expression composed. ”I was confirming the obvious.”

Her dignity had recovered quickly. Lucavion respected the effort enough to leave it undisturbed.

Their Academy cards illuminated as they reached the next division. Caeden’s route continued toward a reinforced hall farther west, while Valeria’s turned through an adjoining courtyard. Lucavion’s line crossed between them and extended toward the central grounds.

Valeria followed it with her eyes. ”Your next course is not in this sector.”

”The card appears convinced of that.”

”What do you have scheduled?”

Lucavion tilted the display away as he adjusted the text beneath his arm. ”One of the Academy’s more distant obligations.”

Caeden glanced at the concealed route, then at Lucavion. He understood the refusal and shifted his attention toward the bell indicator above the junction. Valeria spent another second weighing her curiosity against the time remaining before her own lecture.

”Then keep moving,” she said. ”The Academy will still record your lateness even if it is due to some routes.”

”Unsympathetic institution. Fitting for you.”

Valeria turned west with Caeden, though she looked back once before the moving students carried them along separate paths.

Lucavion continued alone.

Only then did his card name the destination waiting beyond the central grounds.

MAGICIANS’ BLOCK — ARCANE STRUCTURAL THEORY

The population changed as he crossed the Academy. Blades and reinforced weapon cases gave way to heavy texts, catalysts, formation plates and insulated containers whose warning marks discouraged careless contact. Lucavion’s Martial uniform drew more attention with every courtyard, while the estoc at his side made several students adjust their paths around him.

His card directed him toward the shortest connector into the instructional sector. The gate read his authorization, traced the approved course in pale light and kept the barrier closed.

RECALCULATING PUBLIC INSTRUCTIONAL ROUTE

’A distinction the petition neglected to celebrate.’

The revised line curved around the sector’s exterior, taking Lucavion beneath covered passages whose pale stone arches carried layered formation channels rather than the impact-resistant wards favoured by the Martial grounds. Narrow lines of mana travelled through the walls beside him, dividing at each doorway to feed lecture halls, laboratories and practice chambers. Some doors displayed elemental restrictions in coloured script, while others bore enough warning seals to suggest that whatever waited behind them had already objected to confinement at least once.

The students supplied the disorder that the architecture worked so carefully to contain. Two young magicians hurried past while debating a damaged formation plate, with one insisting that the stabilizing ring had held and the other reminding him that anything which cracked its foundation had forfeited the right to be called stable. Near the next stairwell, a girl stopped her companion from placing a warm catalyst inside an insulated case.

”It is insulated,” the boy protested.

”Against heat.”

His hand paused above the clasp.

”Pressure is the third mark.”

The boy reopened the case and carried it at arm’s length, muttering something about instructors who assigned volatile materials before breakfast.

Lucavion passed them with a faint curve at the corner of his mouth. The Martial sector expected its students to damage floors, walls and one another; the Magicians’ Block appeared to expect mistakes that travelled farther.

The longer route drew him through a courtyard crossed by suspended walkways, where glass-sided practice rooms revealed students correcting luminous diagrams in the air, then into an academic wing whose room designations changed according to discipline before changing again according to year. Each junction cost him another glance at his card. The remaining interval narrowed while nearby conversations supplied fragments of unfinished work: a containment ratio copied from the wrong edition, a catalyst refusing to attune, and a first-year who had apparently submitted an entire diagram with its secondary channel reversed.

The final bell sounded as Lucavion climbed the last staircase.

His card guided him along a quieter corridor where the doors stood closed and the formations above them indicated active instruction. When he reached the assigned lecture hall, a lecturer’s voice already carried through the formation-treated wood.

Lucavion raised his card once more. The display confirmed the course, the room and his valid enrollment.

He opened the door, pushing it inward while the lecturer was tracing a branching formation across the projection board.

The explanation broke off midway through a structural condition, and the lecturer’s raised hand remained beside the unfinished line as every student near the entrance turned toward the interruption.

The attention spread across the chamber in less than a breath. Most of the students wore the formal variation assigned to the Magicians’ Block, and their desks held formation plates, diagramming instruments and texts thick enough to discourage casual reading. Lucavion entered among them in a Martial uniform, carrying a considerably thinner book with an estoc secured openly at his waist. Several gazes descended toward the weapon before returning to his face.

The room held its silence.

Lucavion gave the lecturer a slight inclination of his head, then surveyed the curved rows for an unoccupied seat. His attention passed over unfamiliar faces until a trace of silver arrested it near the middle tier.

Elara sat behind an open text with her writing materials arranged beside it, prepared for a lecture whose greatest disturbance should have been a disputed diagram. Her pen stopped above the page. Surprise widened her violet eyes, lifted her posture and held her composure open for one unguarded second.

Lucavion cleared his throat.

”Ahem. Sorry for being late.”

”Eh? Lucavion?”
