Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1189: An anomaly inside Magicians’ Block

Arcane Structural Theory did not begin where Elara’s lessons with Lucavion had begun.

In the Western Library, she had taught him how to identify a formation’s most elementary relationships: the invocation core that defined an effect, the channels that carried mana toward it and the anchors that prevented the resulting structure from collapsing under its own output. Their work with [Mana Light] had reduced each relationship until even a change in one supporting line produced a visible consequence.

The lecturer assumed that everyone present already understood those principles.

He moved instead through the classifications built upon them—distinguishing structures that remained stable through balanced distribution from those that survived by transferring strain into components designed to endure it. A formation could produce the intended result and still be failing. Another could appear damaged while continuing to perform exactly as its creator intended. The difference depended less upon what changed than upon where the resulting pressure travelled.

It was an advanced treatment of the same foundation Elara had placed beneath Lucavion’s hands.

Yet among the specialized courses available within the Magicians’ Block, it was also one of the few that did not immediately exclude him.

Arcane Structural Theory belonged to no single affinity. It did not require students to possess an inherited spell system, recognize the conventions of one historical runic school or reproduce chants refined within noble families. Those advantages remained useful, but the course’s central questions came earlier than all of them.

What carried the effect?

What restrained it?

If one relationship changed, which part paid the difference?

Lucavion already thought in questions like those.

The problem was that he did not know what Magicians called half the answers.

Elara discovered this by watching his notes from the edge of her vision. Whenever the lecturer introduced a conventional term, Lucavion’s pen slowed. He copied secondary load convergence only after checking how the phrase corresponded to the projected diagram, then drew a short line connecting it to a simpler description of his own.

His handwriting beside compensatory anchor appeared to read:

The part forced to clean up everyone else’s mistake.

Elara looked forward before he could catch her reading it.

The students around them possessed the opposite advantage. Most recognized the terminology before the lecturer finished speaking and recorded it without hesitation. Their earlier education had already given names to the relationships appearing above the lectern.

Lucavion possessed fewer names.

Once the lecturer stopped defining them and altered the formation, however, his pen no longer lagged.

A supporting channel narrowed within the projection. Mana accumulated against the restriction, divided across two secondary paths and placed greater demand upon the outer anchors. Several students continued copying the lecturer’s previous explanation before noticing that the structure had changed.

Lucavion had already marked both anchors.

Elara’s gaze remained upon her own notes, though her attention shifted toward the diagram forming beneath his hand. He had not reproduced the projected structure neatly. Instead, he had reduced it to lines of pressure, crossing out the components that would remain unaffected and darkening the route along which the imbalance would travel.

It was inelegant.

It was also correct.

’So this is why she chose this course.’

Selenne had not placed Lucavion somewhere his missing education would cease to matter. She had placed him where those weaknesses would be exposed without preventing his actual understanding from being tested.

The lecturer changed the projection again.

This time, he removed one of the secondary anchors and redirected the released mana into the sustaining circuit. The visible effect remained stable, but a faint distortion appeared within the outer ring.

”Now,” the lecturer said, turning toward the descending rows, ”which component fails first?”

Pens slowed throughout the hall.

The first answer came from the second row.

”The sustaining circuit. It was designed to maintain the output under a balanced supply, but the redirected mana exceeds that relation. Its inner channels will degrade first.”

The lecturer neither confirmed nor rejected it. He selected another raised hand.

”The outer ring,” a young woman answered. ”The distortion has already appeared there. Once its alignment shifts beyond correction, the formation will lose containment.”

A third student argued for the remaining anchor. Removing its counterpart had not erased the load that both anchors previously divided; it had merely concealed part of that transfer inside the sustaining circuit. The surviving anchor would be forced to correct both the imbalance and the outer ring’s displacement.

Each answer was defensible.

The sustaining circuit carried mana beyond its intended function. The outer ring displayed the first visible deformation, while the remaining anchor had inherited a relationship it had never been designed to carry alone. Elara could have supported any of those conclusions by selecting the appropriate structural principle.

That was precisely the problem.

The students were identifying where failure might occur. None had established which component would reach failure first.

The lecturer’s expression revealed very little, but his questions did. He asked one student whether visible distortion necessarily indicated the nearest point of collapse, then asked another how much excess mana the sustaining circuit could safely absorb.

Neither value appeared within the projection.

Elara found herself looking toward Lucavion.

He had not raised his hand. He was still writing, though the lecturer had already moved beyond the term he appeared to be recording. A short explanation sat beneath it in his notes, followed by an arrow connecting the sustaining circuit to all three proposed points of failure.

The lecturer followed Elara’s attention—or perhaps he had intended the same destination from the beginning.

”Lucavion.”

His pen stopped.

Several students turned with renewed interest. Being admitted into the course had answered whether Lucavion could remain. It had not demonstrated that he could understand anything taught inside it.

Elara suspected the lecturer’s purpose was less dramatic.

Lucavion had arrived late, allowed the room’s objections to rise and then encouraged them with his own reply. His enrollment had been valid. His behavior had still helped turn a brief verification into a disruption.

The lecturer could not punish him for being correct.

He could, however, ensure that the attention Lucavion had gathered did not disappear simply because he was now seated.

’Heh... You reap what you sow.’

A small smirk escaped Elara before she bothered to suppress it.

Lucavion glanced sideways. His black eyes rested upon her expression for one brief moment, making it clear that he had seen enough to identify her complete lack of sympathy.

The lecturer indicated the projected formation. ”Which component fails first?”

Lucavion looked from the surviving anchor to the distorted outer ring, then down toward the sustaining circuit. The room waited for him to choose among the answers already offered.

He did not.

”How should I know?”

A few students stared at him. Someone farther up the hall gave a quiet, disbelieving laugh, apparently satisfied that Selenne’s chosen exception had failed at the first question.

The lecturer remained silent.

Lucavion tapped the end of his pen against the diagram in his notes.

”You showed us where the pressure goes,” he added. ”You didn’t show us how much any of those parts can take.”

Elara’s smirk stopped before it had fully formed.

Her gaze returned to the projected formation.

The displaced load, the distortion along the outer ring, the strain upon the remaining anchor—all of it was visible. Yet the lecturer had supplied no tolerance values for any component. Without knowing how much pressure each structure could endure, none of the proposed answers could establish which would fail first.

Lucavion had not named a component because the information did not permit him to name one.

The lecturer remained silent for another moment. Then he nodded.

A slight smile appeared upon his face.

It was not the expression of an instructor pleased by polished terminology. Lucavion’s answer possessed none. But whatever lesson the lecturer had intended when he placed the late arrival beneath the attention of the entire hall, he had evidently recognized that Lucavion had not answered carelessly.

”Your phrasing,” the lecturer said, ”would be unacceptable in a written examination.”

Lucavion glanced at the unfinished line beneath his pen. ”I suspected as much.”

A few students shifted, but the lecturer continued before the remark could gather a response.

”Nevertheless, your answer is fundamentally correct.”

The admission settled across the hall.

Elara saw several of the students who had answered earlier look back toward the formation. Their conclusions had not been foolish. Each had identified a genuine concentration of structural stress. The sustaining circuit might fail beneath the redirected mana. The outer ring might rupture where the distortion had appeared. The remaining anchor might collapse beneath the additional burden.

But might was not would.

The lecturer raised one hand, and the formation separated into three illuminated sections. Numerical fields appeared beside the sustaining circuit, the outer ring and the remaining anchor, though each remained blank.

”What has been demonstrated is load distribution,” he said. ”What has not been provided is structural tolerance. Without the endurance threshold of each component—and the rate at which continued strain degrades it—failure precedence cannot be determined.”

The three blank fields brightened.

”Those of you who named the circuit, the boundary ring or the anchor identified plausible failure points. You did not establish which would fail first. A visible distortion indicates stress. It does not, by itself, reveal proximity to collapse.”

His eyes moved briefly toward Lucavion.

”The appropriate answer is: insufficient tolerance data to determine failure precedence. Not ’How should I know?’”

A restrained ripple of amusement passed through the hall.

Lucavion looked down at his notes. Beside the plain sentence he had already written, his pen began moving again.

Insufficient tolerance data. Failure precedence indeterminate.

Elara watched the formal words appear beneath his earlier observation.

He had lacked the terminology. He had not lacked the distinction.

The lecturer restored the complete formation above the hall, now with its hidden tolerance values displayed beside each component.

”Structure tells you where force travels,” he said. ”It does not tell you what survives that force unless its limits are known.”

The notation crystals brightened as the class began recording the correction.

”This distinction,” the lecturer continued, ”is where Arcane Structural Theory begins.”
