Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1175: Changing the Structure

”It is...” Lucavion stopped, as though the remaining words had caught somewhere behind his throat. His voice emerged less steadily when he tried again. ”Sustaining itself?”

Elara had already confirmed as much, yet the answer did not come immediately.

Her attention had shifted away from the sphere.

Lucavion’s palm remained open beneath it, close enough for its pale light to gather along his fingers without touching them. His posture had gone still, but not with the deliberate control he used whenever he wished to conceal a reaction. Even his eyes were different. The sharpness that usually measured whatever stood before him had softened, leaving his gaze fixed upon the simple manifestation as though looking elsewhere might cause it to vanish.

’What is with that face?’

The lesson had proceeded without anything so peculiar. Lucavion had made mistakes, argued when he considered her standards excessive and answered her criticism with the same restrained irreverence he brought to nearly every exchange. The unexplained turn of his wrist had been the sole exception, and even that had lasted only until she redirected him toward the Arcanian form.

This reaction possessed none of that confusion.

His attention did not move across the anchors or supporting channels. He was no longer inspecting whether the formation performed correctly, nor did he appear to be evaluating the imperfect edge that still disturbed the sphere’s shape. He was simply looking at the light.

”It is,” Elara answered at last.

Lucavion’s fingers shifted beneath the manifestation. The movement was slight, almost cautious, as though he wanted to test whether it truly occupied the space above his hand without disturbing the instructions sustaining it. The sphere gave one faint pulse in response to the mana circulating through the plate, but it neither followed his hand nor collapsed.

A breath left him through his nose.

Not laughter. Not quite relief, either.

Elara knew that [Mana Light] should not have earned such a response. Children from established magical households often learned a prepared version before they understood the structure supporting it, and even students of modest education rarely regarded successful manifestation as anything worth remembering once they entered the Academy.

Lucavion had already accomplished things that rendered this small light insignificant by comparison.

That only made his reaction more difficult to understand.

’Is he truly that invested in learning one elementary spell?’

He had approached the assignment seriously enough, certainly, but diligence alone did not explain the way he watched the sphere. Lucavion did not look satisfied with a difficult problem solved. There was none of the quiet calculation that followed his other successes, nor the faint amusement with which he received praise he pretended not to value.

Instead, his expression carried something far less guarded.

”I really...” His fingers curled slightly beneath the light, then stopped before closing around it. ”I really did it.”

Elara’s eyes widened.

The words themselves were simple. The manner in which he uttered them was not.

A memory returned—not from their lessons, but from the period when she had first learned that Lucavion had once been betrothed to Isolde. That discovery had brought other fragments of his past with it, details that had seemed secondary beside the absurdity of the engagement itself. Lucavion had failed to awaken properly. He had been unable to cultivate as others did, unable to form a usable core or command mana in any manner his family considered worthwhile.

’Ah...’

Her gaze returned to the sphere.

For someone who had reached his present level, an elementary [Mana Light] should have meant nothing. For the boy he had once been, however, this small and uneven manifestation would have belonged beyond an uncrossable boundary.

The conclusion fitted too neatly, and that alone invited caution.

Lucavion had concealed his intentions from her before. He had entered the Rotunda with knowledge he refused to explain, interfered with Gervase while pretending the consequences required no discussion and spoken of his own past through metaphors that revealed only as much as he wished her to see.

’Is this still another performance?’

Elara studied his face once more. The question felt uglier now than it had when suspicion first formed.

The light trembled above his hand, and Lucavion’s eyes followed the movement with an openness she had never seen him permit. If that wonder had been placed there deliberately, then he had deceived her completely—not through argument, misdirection or some carefully chosen half-truth, but through something she could no longer bring herself to dissect.

’But how could you act like this?’

Her doubt found no answer that her heart was willing to accept.

’If this is an act.... If you really are acting, then I am defeated this time.’

The sphere pulsed once, still sustained by the imperfect structure beneath it. Elara felt a small smile touch her lips before she could prevent it. A knot had gathered in her throat, tightening around the composed response she intended to give, but she kept her posture that of an instructor and returned her attention to the formation as though she had understood nothing beyond its success.

”Yes,” she said, though the single word caught slightly as it left her. She steadied her voice before continuing. ”You did.”

She offered no question to follow it.

For the moment, the light was enough.

*****

Elara gave him several breaths before returning to the lesson.

The sphere had settled as much as his formation permitted, yet its flaws remained visible. It floated slightly to the right of the invocation core, one edge softer than the other, while a faint fluctuation continued passing through its brightness at uneven intervals.

She indicated the light with the end of her pen. ”Now tell me why it looks like that.”

Lucavion’s gaze remained on the sphere for another moment before the familiar concentration returned. He lowered his hand and leaned closer to the plate, following the brighter edge of the manifestation down toward the invocation core.

”The pressure is stronger on this side.” His finger traced the route without touching the ink. ”The opposite path takes longer to feed the center, so the light forms here first and pulls the rest toward it.”

”Which path?”

His eyes moved across the supporting channels. ”The left supporting channel carries less mana.”

”It carries the same amount eventually.”

Lucavion paused, reconsidering the distinction. ”Then its transfer is slower.”

”Because?”

His attention shifted toward the anchors. The first stood slightly nearer to the primary division than the second, an error small enough for the structure to endure but large enough to distort how pressure reached the invocation core.

”The anchor spacing changes the load accepted by each supporting channel,” he said. ”The second anchor compensates, but not before the output relation begins establishing the manifestation.”

The answer moved from visible consequence to formal structure with only one correction. Elara concealed her satisfaction by turning the plate a fraction beneath the light.

”And the fluctuation?”

”The sustaining instruction receives an uneven output, corrects it, then receives the next cycle before the first adjustment settles.”

”Closer. The instruction is not correcting the input. It is preserving the manifestation while the output relation fluctuates beneath it.”

Lucavion gave a short nod. He looked once more at the imperfect sphere, though the softness in his expression had receded beneath active thought.

For the remainder of the lesson, that would be the method. They would alter a single relationship, predict what the change should produce and then activate the formation long enough to observe whether the result agreed.

Elara dismissed the sphere through the termination route but left the circle intact. Taking up the inscription pen, she loosened the second anchor and shifted its position outward by less than the width of its central mark.

”What changes?”

Lucavion studied the altered spacing. ”The channel feeding that side will take longer to establish pressure. The manifestation should shift away from it.”

”Collapse?”

”Not unless the remaining anchors fail to compensate.”

Elara returned the plate to him.

He activated the formation again. Mana divided through the supporting channels, but the altered side lagged more sharply this time. The sphere rose above the invocation core and drifted away from the displaced anchor, its opposite edge brightening while the remaining anchors accepted greater strain.

Lucavion’s fingers tensed at the initiating point.

He did not intervene.

The manifestation stabilized off-center, exactly as he had predicted.

Elara let it remain long enough for him to observe the brighter anchors and the unequal load passing through them, then dismissed the light. She drew the plate back and restored the anchor to its original position, repairing the altered connections with two careful strokes.

When she returned the formation, Lucavion no longer looked at its imperfection as something that had merely survived.

His attention moved from the displaced light to the channels that had produced it, reading the flaw backward through the structure.

Failure had ceased to be the only information an imperfect result could provide.

An imperfection no longer appeared to him as something that demanded correction merely because he could see it. Left alone, it could reveal which parts of the structure had carried the consequence.

Elara tested that change in understanding twice more.

She first narrowed one supporting channel. Lucavion readily predicted the delayed transfer, but required a glance toward the anchors before accounting for the greater burden the imbalance would place upon them. When they activated the formation, the corresponding anchor brightened under the additional strain, and the sphere emerged unevenly before settling several breaths later than before.

The final alteration changed the output relation, forcing the light to manifest higher above the plate. Lucavion identified the visible result, then traced the secondary demand without waiting for activation: the invocation core would spend more mana projecting the manifestation, while the sustaining instruction would receive a weaker output and require longer to stabilize it.

The result followed his prediction. A larger gap opened between the plate and the pale sphere, whose brightness fluctuated as mana passed more rapidly through the supporting channels. Lucavion allowed the structure to compensate, watching the strain travel instead of suppressing it.

Once Elara dismissed the light, he did not immediately release the plate. His attention remained upon the sustaining marks beside the invocation core.

”If I carried this relationship myself,” he said, indicating one section, ”the formation would need less instruction.”

Elara studied the component he had chosen. The proposal was valid. A mage could remove or simplify part of a formation by assuming that function directly, provided the caster possessed the control required to maintain it.

”You would save structural complexity,” she said, drawing the plate toward herself, ”and spend attention in its place. If your concentration breaks, whatever you carry breaks with it.”

”But it would work.”

”In principle.” Elara covered the formation with a blank sheet before his interest could become an immediate experiment. ”Which is why you will not attempt it alone.”

Lucavion looked at the covered plate, then at her. He appeared ready to argue that direct control was the one part of the exercise for which he needed the least supervision, but Elara closed the ink and placed it beyond his reach.

His instinct was not merely an obstacle to formal magic. Properly disciplined, it could allow him to choose which relationships a structure carried and which remained under his authority. He was unlikely ever to accept a formation as a finished object simply because tradition presented it that way.

That problem could wait for their next lesson.

Lucavion began collecting his loose notes, apparently taking the covered plate as dismissal. Elara let him stack the first few pages before moving the formation materials aside. The space opening between them revealed the table’s bare surface, but the principle of the lesson remained.

Changing one relationship had not removed the pressure acting upon the formation. It had only forced that pressure to travel elsewhere.

This was simply a conclusion for this lesson.

But for Elara, the meeting was far from over.

”Where are you going?”

She had other matters to talk about.
