Gene Gingerline woke to the sound of tiny footsteps thundering across the hallway.

A heartbeat later, his bedroom door burst open.

Lilith sprinted into the room in a blur of silver hair and black pajamas, Fluffy tucked under one arm and Chomper’s polished brass nameplate clutched in the other.

“Gene!”

Gene jolted upright in bed.

Selene, half-asleep beside him, groaned and buried her face deeper into her pillow.

Gene blinked at the doorway.

Lilith stood there panting dramatically, her crown tilted and one slipper missing.

Gene’s heart pounded.

“What happened?”

Lilith held up the brass plaque.

“Chomper says his title is crooked.”

There was a pause.

Gene stared.

Selene slowly lowered the blanket and looked at Lilith with one eye open.

“The emergency,” she said flatly, “is that Chomper’s sign is crooked.”

Lilith nodded solemnly.

“It is very important.”

Gene rubbed his face.

Then he looked at Selene.

She looked back at him.

And both of them burst into laughter.

Lilith grinned.

“So you’ll fix it?”

Gene sighed in theatrical defeat.

“Of course.”

Selene sat up and stretched, her silver hair spilling around her shoulders like moonlight.

“I suppose this is how our perfectly normal day begins.”

Gene kissed her cheek.

“With a crooked mimic plaque.”

Selene smiled.

“Normal enough for us.”

⸻

Breakfast with Monsters

By the time Gene and Selene entered the dining hall, the hotel was fully awake.

The long table overflowed with food prepared by Chef Lucien Delacroix and his faithful companion Pierre, the French Cart.

Golden croissants, fluffy scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, herb-roasted potatoes, and pastries filled every inch of the table.

Lucien stood at the entrance with one hand over his heart.

“Breakfast is served, mes amis.”

Lilith was already seated with Chomper beside her.

The mimic wore his newly straightened plaque with obvious pride.

Jesse Belle and the Caretaker sat together.

The giant masked killer had a flower tucked into his overalls.

Mother Sarah poured tea.

Victor and Morrigan were discussing animated cutlery.

Captain Stringer and his puppet officers ate with rigid, synchronized precision.

Hank the security guard entered carrying the morning paper.

Gene sat beside Selene and inhaled deeply.

“I could get used to this.”

Selene buttered a croissant.

“You say that every morning.”

“Because Lucien is a genius.”

Lucien bowed.

“You are too kind.”

Lilith pointed her fork at Gene.

“After breakfast, are we doing anything exciting?”

Gene thought about his schedule.

No arena matches.

No burglar incidents.

No world-shaking upgrades.

No new summons.

He smiled.

“Today, Selene and I are taking a day off.”

The entire table fell silent.

Victor nearly dropped his coffee.

Mother Sarah raised an eyebrow.

Jesse Belle blinked.

Lilith gasped.

“Is that allowed?”

Gene grinned.

“We’re about to find out.”

⸻

Morning Stroll

After breakfast, Gene and Selene left the hotel hand in hand.

The twilight sky cast everything in soft silver and violet.

The cobblestone paths wound through gardens and carefully maintained grounds.

Children played in the distance near the Midnight Academy.

Ravens perched in iron trees.

Warm lights glowed from the hotel windows.

Gene took a deep breath.

“This is nice.”

Selene leaned against him as they walked.

“Peaceful.”

They passed Chomper stationed proudly in the academy foyer.

The mimic opened one eye and chirped.

Gene saluted.

“Carry on.”

Further along, they found Jesse Belle and the Caretaker sitting on a bench near the gardens.

Jesse Belle waved.

“Mornin’, lovebirds.”

The Caretaker raised two fingers in greeting.

Selene smiled.

“Enjoying the morning?”

Jesse Belle rested her head on the Caretaker’s shoulder.

“Sure are.”

Gene grinned.

“Looks like we’re not the only ones having a date.”

Jesse Belle winked.

“Best kind of date is one where nobody gets stabbed.”

The Caretaker tilted his head.

Jesse Belle patted his arm.

“Well, mostly nobody.”

⸻

Market Day

Gene and Selene decided to visit the hotel marketplace.

The square bustled with traders from Grimhollow and Moonfen.

Stalls displayed produce, herbs, fabrics, jewelry, books, and magical curiosities.

Gene enjoyed moving through the crowd anonymously—well, as anonymously as one could while accompanied by a noble beauty and occasionally greeted as “Spirit Lord.”

They sampled candied nuts.

Selene bought a moonstone bracelet.

Gene purchased a hand-carved music box for Lilith.

At a bakery, they shared a pastry filled with cream and berries.

Selene smiled as she brushed sugar from Gene’s lips.

“You know, if we did this on Earth, it would be an ordinary date.”

Gene laughed.

“On Earth, I wasn’t dating a moonlit noblewoman while running a haunted hotel.”

Selene slipped her hand into his.

“I prefer this version.”

“So do I.”

⸻

The Academy Visit

On their way back, they stopped by Midnight Academy.

The children were in recess.

The moment Lilith spotted them, she charged across the yard with several students in tow.

“Gene! Selene! Look!”

She proudly displayed a finger painting.

It depicted the hotel, several ravens, and what appeared to be a giant smiling Chomper.

“That’s amazing,” Gene said.

Lilith beamed.

“It’s for your room.”

Selene accepted the painting carefully.

“We’ll treasure it.”

Mother Sarah approached, her black habit stirring in a breeze that didn’t quite exist.

“The students are making remarkable progress.”

Gene looked around at the laughing children.

“You’ve done an incredible job.”

Mother Sarah’s stern features softened.

“They are worth the effort.”

Lilith tugged on Gene’s sleeve.

“Can we have dessert tonight?”

Gene raised an eyebrow.

“What does that have to do with school?”

Lilith smiled.

“Nothing. I just wanted to ask.”

Selene laughed.

“Good strategy.”

⸻

Lunch in the Garden

Lucien prepared a picnic basket for Gene and Selene.

They spread a blanket beneath an enormous silver-leafed tree overlooking the expanded grounds.

The meal included:

• Herb-roasted chicken sandwiches

• Fresh fruit

• Cheese

• Warm pastries

• Sparkling berry juice

Gene lay back on the blanket and looked at the twilight sky.

“This feels almost unreal.”

Selene reclined beside him.

“Our life is unreal.”

Gene turned to face her.

“Do you miss your old life?”

Selene considered the question.

“Sometimes.”

She touched his cheek.

“But I wouldn’t trade this.”

Gene smiled.

“Neither would I.”

They kissed beneath the silver leaves while ravens cawed approvingly overhead.

⸻

A Tour of Home

The afternoon became a leisurely tour of everything they had built.

They visited:

• The Midnight Academy

• The armory

• Victor and Morrigan’s laboratory

• Lilith’s playroom

• The hotel kitchens

• The library

• The training grounds

• The new towns visible beyond the forest

Everywhere they went, they were greeted warmly.

Captain Stringer saluted.

Lucien offered pastries.

Victor proudly displayed a non-explosive prototype.

Morrigan showed them a reanimated mechanical bird.

Jesse Belle sent them off with cookies.

The Caretaker offered a silent nod.

Hank tipped his cap.

Gene realized he no longer saw the hotel as an experiment.

It was home.

⸻

Quiet Time

In the late afternoon, Gene and Selene returned to their room.

They changed into comfortable clothes and curled up on the couch by the fireplace.

Selene read while Gene rested with his head in her lap.

For an hour, neither of them said much.

The crackling fire and the distant sounds of the hotel filled the silence.

Gene closed his eyes.

“This may be the best part.”

Selene stroked his hair.

“Doing nothing?”

“Doing nothing with you.”

Her smile was soft and radiant.

“That’s my favorite too.”

⸻

Dinner and Dessert

That evening, Lucien served a special dinner.

Roast duck with herb glaze.

Creamy potatoes.

Honey-glazed carrots.

Fresh bread.

And, at Lilith’s insistence, a towering chocolate cake.

The family gathered around the long table.

Conversation flowed easily.

Victor recounted a failed experiment involving self-peeling potatoes.

Jesse Belle teased Hank about his inability to dance.

Mother Sarah discussed promising students.

Lilith announced she intended to become “the smartest monster queen ever.”

Gene looked around the table and felt a profound sense of gratitude.

This was his family.

Not by blood.

Not by fate.

But by choice.

⸻

Evening on the Balcony

Later that night, Gene and Selene stood together on the balcony outside their room.

The hotel glowed behind them.

The academy stood quiet in the distance.

Lanterns twinkled in Grimhollow and Moonfen.

The roads connecting everything shimmered faintly in the moonlight.

Selene rested her head on Gene’s shoulder.

“Did you enjoy your normal day?”

Gene smiled.

“It was perfect.”

Selene laughed softly.

“Only you would consider a day involving haunted chefs, monster children, and sentient treasure chests normal.”

Gene wrapped his arms around her.

“Normal is overrated.”

She tilted her face up to his.

He kissed her gently.

The kiss deepened.

Warm.

Comforting.

Certain.

When they finally parted, Gene pressed his forehead to hers.

“I love you.”

Selene’s silver eyes shone.

“I love you too.”

⸻

Home

As they stood together beneath the endless twilight, Gene thought about the life he had left behind.

The loneliness.

The uncertainty.

The sense that something was missing.

Now he had found more than he ever imagined possible.

A world.

A purpose.

A family.

And someone to share it all with.

The Nightmare Grand Hotel rose proudly around them.

Not just a fortress.

Not just a school.

Not just a home for monsters.

It was proof that even the strangest stories could become something beautiful.

Gene smiled as Selene nestled closer.

Tomorrow would bring new challenges.

New summons.

New mysteries.

But tonight was quiet.

Tonight was normal.

And for Gene Gingerline, that was more than enough.
