Gene Gingerline had never expected to become a school administrator.

A lord of monsters?

Sure.

Owner of a haunted hotel?

Apparently that became a thing.

Architect of a growing horror-themed kingdom populated by slashers, ghost nuns, mad scientists, and one very spoiled monster queen?

Somehow, yes.

But a school administrator?

That had not been on his bingo card.

Yet on a crisp twilight morning, Gene stood at the foot of the grand stone steps of the newly completed Midnight Academy.

Just staring up at the building gave him a strange mixture of pride, excitement, and mild schoolhouse terror.

The academy stood just beyond the Nightmare Grand Hotel, connected by a winding cobblestone path lined with black iron lanterns.

What had originally been an empty section of the grounds, was now a sprawling Gothic schoolhouse made up of gray stone, arched windows, and steep roofs crowned with silver spires.

Warm golden light glowed through stained-glass windows depicting ravens, books, moons, and friendly furry monsters.

The great oak doors bore the school’s motto, carved in elegant silver lettering:

Knowledge Conquers Fear.

Gene smiled.

“That’s actually a pretty good motto.”

Selene slipped her arm through his.

“You’re opening a school today.”

Gene exhaled slowly.

“I know.”

Selene kissed his cheek.

“You’re going to do great.”

From behind them came Lilith’s excited voice.

“Do I get to ring the bell?”

Gene turned.

Lilith stood in a tiny black dress with silver trim, her crown polished and slightly askew.

Mother Sarah had clearly dressed her for the occasion.

The Caretaker stood behind her like a silent bodyguard.

Jesse Belle wore a dark blue dress and wide smile.

Mother Sarah looked as composed as ever in a pristine black habit.

Victor and Morrigan were already arguing about whether educational lightning demonstrations counted as “essential.”

Captain Stringer and his puppet officers stood in neat formation.

Even Chomper had been polished until his wooden panels gleamed.

Gene looked over his family and felt his chest tighten with emotion.

They had built all of this together.

And today, they were sharing it with the rest of their world.

⸻

The system notification floated before Gene as he reviewed the final details of the school opening.

⸻

⸻

Gene had spent days setting the tuition.

Too high, and few families could afford it.

Too low, and the academy would struggle to support itself.

Mother Sarah had insisted that a small scholarship fund be established for promising children whose parents lacked the means to pay.

Gene agreed immediately.

“No child should be turned away because they’re poor,” he had said.

Mother Sarah had given him a rare, deeply approving smile.

⸻

The First Visitors

The first wagons from Moonfen arrived just after dawn.

Then came Grimhollow.

Soon, a steady line of parents and children wound up the road toward the academy.

Gene felt his nervousness rise.

These were not just faceless NPCs anymore.

They were families.

Mothers smoothing collars.

Fathers carrying satchels.

Children fidgeting with excitement or fear.

They looked so real that Gene had long since stopped thinking of them as anything else.

The first family to approach was from the city of Moonfen.

The mother wore marsh-green robes and carried a basket of glowing flowers.

Her son, perhaps seven years old, hid behind her, peeking out every now and again due to his persistent curiosity of the new building.

She bowed respectfully.

“Lord Gingerline.”

Gene returned the bow.

“Please, I prefer to be Gene.

The woman smiled uncertainly.

“We heard your school is accepting students.”

Mother Sarah stepped forward, warm but dignified.

“It would be our honor.”

The little boy peeked around his mother and stared at Lilith.

Lilith waved enthusiastically.

“Hi! I’m Queen Lilith!”

The boy blinked.

Then smiled.

“Hello.”

The tension broke immediately.

⸻

Enrollment Day

Inside the academy, the entrance hall bustled with life.

Long tables had been set up for registration.

Captain Stringer oversaw the process with military efficiency.

“Next… family… please.”

Pru managed records.

Daisy comforted nervous children.

Finn entertained younger students by making chalk dance across the blackboard.

Brick carried trunks and supplies.

Victor and Morrigan offered demonstrations in the science wing, carefully avoiding explosions.

Jesse Belle guided parents to classrooms.

“Bless your heart, your little one’s gonna love it here.”

The Caretaker stood near the doors.

He said nothing.

But his imposing presence discouraged anyone from causing trouble.

Despite his intimidating appearance, many children were fascinated.

One brave girl approached him and offered a flower.

The Caretaker accepted it with solemn care and tucked it into his overalls.

Jesse Belle nearly melted.

“Ain’t he just the sweetest thing.”

⸻

The Children’s Reactions

The academy was intentionally designed to feel magical rather than frightening.

Classrooms were spacious and bright.

Bookshelves stretched to the ceilings.

Constellations glimmered softly overhead.

Portraits offered encouraging advice.

The library smelled of parchment and cedar.

The alchemy rooms sparkled with neatly arranged ingredients.

The playground featured climbing structures, swings, and a carefully monitored monster petting area.

Lilith proudly gave tours.

“This is the snack room.”

“Important,” Jesse Belle said.

“This is where Mother Sarah teaches.”

Several children gulped nervously.

Mother Sarah smiled serenely.

“I only appear frightening.”

Lilith whispered conspiratorially.

“She gives good cookies if you finish your homework.”

Enrollment numbers climbed steadily.

By midday, nearly sixty students had registered.

Gene stared at the list in amazement.

“We actually did it.”

Selene squeezed his hand.

“You built something people trust.”

⸻

The Opening Ceremony

The great bell tolled across the grounds.

Lilith had indeed been given the honor of ringing it.

The students and families gathered in the courtyard.

Gene stepped to the podium, feeling unexpectedly nervous.

He looked out over the crowd.

Children from Grimhollow and Moonfen.

Parents with hopeful expressions.

His strange and wonderful family standing behind him.

Gene cleared his throat.

“When I first came to this world, I had no idea what I was doing.”

That earned a ripple of laughter from those who knew him well.

He smiled.

“To be honest, I still don’t.”

More laughter.

“But I do know this.”

He gestured toward the academy.

“Fear and ignorance are powerful things. They divide people. They make us suspicious of one another.”

He looked at the gathered children.

“This school exists to do the opposite.”

He pointed to the carved motto above the doors.

“Knowledge conquers fear.”

The crowd applauded.

Gene stepped back.

Mother Sarah took the podium next.

Her calm, resonant voice filled the courtyard.

“At Midnight Academy, every child will be challenged, protected, and valued.”

She smiled gently at the students.

“Curiosity is encouraged. Kindness is expected. Cheating is strongly discouraged.”

The children giggled.

Finally, Lilith stepped up on a stool.

“Have fun and don’t bite anybody.”

There was a stunned pause.

Then the loudest applause of the day.

⸻

The First Lessons

Once the ceremony concluded, the children filed into classrooms.

Mother Sarah taught reading and history.

Her strict demeanor quickly softened into patient guidance.

Captain Stringer led civics and discipline.

“Rules… exist… for… everyone.”

Victor and Morrigan introduced natural philosophy with carefully controlled demonstrations.

Jesse Belle taught physical training and practical life skills.

“Always split wood away from your feet, sugar.”

Daisy Wren supervised younger students.

Finn assisted with games.

Brick coached athletics.

Gene wandered the halls in awe.

Children laughed.

Teachers instructed.

The academy lived.

⸻

Lunch and Friendship

The cafeteria proved an immediate success.

Long tables overflowed with warm meals.

Children from both towns sat together cautiously at first, then more comfortably as the meal progressed.

Lilith held court at her own table, explaining the importance of dessert.

One shy boy from Grimhollow stared nervously at Chomper.

Lilith patted the mimic affectionately.

“He only eats people if they’re mean.”

The boy considered that.

“Seems fair.”

By the end of lunch, they were friends.

⸻

Parent Reactions

When the first school day ended, parents returned to collect their children.

Gene braced himself for criticism.

Instead, he was surrounded by grateful families.

A blacksmith from Grimhollow clasped Gene’s forearm.

“My daughter hasn’t stopped talking about her classes.”

A herbalist from Moonfen smiled.

“My son wants to become an alchemist.”

One mother wiped tears from her eyes.

“This is more than we hoped for.”

The system chimed repeatedly.

⸻

REPUTATION INCREASED

Grimhollow: Friendly

Moonfen: Trusted

Daily Income Increased.

⸻

Gene blinked.

The academy was already paying off.

Not just financially.

Emotionally.

Socially.

As a foundation for the future.

⸻

Evening Reflections

That night, the family gathered in the hotel lounge.

Lilith sprawled on the carpet recounting every exciting moment.

“Then the little boy gave Mister Caretaker a flower!”

Jesse Belle sighed happily.

“My heart can only take so much.”

Mother Sarah sipped tea.

“The first day exceeded expectations.”

Captain Stringer nodded.

“Operational… success.”

Victor raised a glass.

“To education.”

Morrigan lifted hers.

“To curious minds.”

Gene looked around the room.

His monsters.

His friends.

His family.

Outside, the Midnight Academy stood illuminated beneath the twilight sky.

A place where ordinary children and extraordinary beings learned together.

Selene rested her head on his shoulder.

“You changed this world.”

Gene shook his head.

“We changed it.”

She smiled.

“That’s better.”

Gene gazed out the window toward the academy and the distant towns beyond.

The Nightmare Grand Hotel had begun as a refuge for monsters.

Now it was becoming something greater.

A community.

A kingdom.

A home where fear was understood, not worshipped.

And where every child—human, monster, or somewhere in between—could learn that the things hiding in the dark were not always something to fear.

Sometimes, they were family.
