Summoner of Nightmares

For all the impossible things Gene Gingerline had accepted since his death, there was one development he still found difficult to process.

He had a date.

A real one.

Not a vague “we should hang out sometime” that dissolved into scheduling conflicts and polite excuses. Not an awkward coffee with someone who spent half the conversation checking their phone.

An actual date.

With Selene Ardent.

Gene stood in front of the full-length mirror in his suite at the Nightmare Grand Hotel and adjusted the collar of his charcoal-gray coat for the fifth time.

Then the sixth.

Then, for reasons he could not justify, the seventh.

The coat fit well. The black shirt beneath it was crisp and tailored.

His boots were polished.

His hair, usually content to ignore all attempts at organization, had been persuaded into a style that looked intentionally groomed rather than accidentally chaotic.

He looked good.

Respectable.

Possibly even attractive.

He still felt like he was about to be interrogated.

He walked over to his wardrobe and pulled out a tie.

He walked back and forth as he argued with himself on if he should wear a tie or if that would be too formal.

You are pacing.

Gene glanced over his shoulder.

The Caretaker stood near the bedroom door, arms folded across his broad chest, white mask unreadable as always.

Gene buttoned his cuff.

“I am not pacing.”

The Caretaker remained silent.

Gene sighed.

“Fine. I’m pacing.”

He turned to face the towering slasher.

He pointed with his floppy tie,” This is my first date in a world where people can summon creatures from their own dreams. I think I have reason to be nervous!”

The masked figure tilted his head.

“Don’t look at me like that.”

The Caretaker continued looking exactly like that.

“Sorry, I’m just being a bottle of nerves today.”

Gene rubbed the back of his neck.

A soft knock suddenly sounded at the door.

Gene straightened up abruptly throwing the tie back into the closet.

“Oh God she’s here already.”

He paced the room one more time, breathing deeply to calm himself.

He slapped himself with both hands.

“Okay, Gene you got this.”

He cleared his throat and smiled as he opened the door.

Selene stood in the hallway, and Gene forgot every clever thing he had intended to say.

She wore a deep emerald dress that fell to just below her knees, paired with a fitted black coat and silver earrings that caught the light when she moved. Her dark curls were pinned back on one side with a delicate moon-shaped clip.

She looked elegant.

Her skin was radiating a wonderful dreamy glow.

It reminded Gene of the sight of freshly baked bread.

Bread had always reminded him of his mother’s house.

As dysfunctional as it had been, the memory of his mother almost brought a tear to his eye.

Selene was if you had to put it into words…

Absolutely stunning.

For one dangerously long moment, Gene simply stared.

Selene arched an eyebrow.

“Should I be concerned?”

Gene coughed as he found his voice.

“No, no, everything is fine!”

He paused.

“Though there was a possibility that I stopped functioning for a few minutes there. You are absolutely breathtaking.”

Color slowly enveloped her cheeks.

“That’s a very flattering.”

Gene offered his arm with theatrical seriousness.

“You look incredible.”

Selene slipped her hand into the crook of his elbow.

“So do you.”

From inside the room, the Caretaker loomed in the doorway.

Selene smiled at the silent giant.

“Keep an eye on the hotel while we’re gone.”

The Caretaker gave a single, solemn nod.

Gene pointed at him.

“No traumatizing the children.”

The Caretaker remained perfectly still.

Gene narrowed his eyes.

“I’m trusting you in the very least to try not to!”

They stepped through the portal to Selene’s Domain.

⸻

Entering the Moonlit Grove

Gene expected something impressive.

Selene’s world exceeded every expectation.

They emerged into a forest bathed in silver twilight.

Ancient trees with white bark rose like columns in a cathedral.

Their falling leaves shimmered with faint bioluminescence, casting soft pools of emerald and blue light over moss-covered paths.

Crystal clear streams snaked slowly through the undergrowth, reflecting a magnificent sky crowded with countless stars.

The air smelled of jasmine, rain, and cedar.

In the distance, elegant buildings of stone and living wood nestled among the trees, connected by arched bridges and flowering vines.

Small foxlike summons darted through out the brush.

Tiny lights, either firefly or spirit, drifted lazily through ancient branches.

Gene turned slowly.

“Selene.”

She looked almost shy.

“Yes?”

“This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.”

Her smile softened.

“I’m glad you like it.”

Gene looked at her.

“Like it? I could literally write poetry about it.”

Selene laughed.

“That may be the nicest thing anyone has said about my domain.”

Gene offered her his arm again.

“Lead on.”

⸻

The Date

Selene took him through her world with the delight of someone sharing a treasured secret.

They crossed a bridge organically woven from living vines.

They visited a floating tea pavilion overlooking a moonlit lake where silver fish leapt haphazardly through the air like shooting stars.

They wandered past a library grown into the heart of a colossal tree.

Gene listened as Selene told him about how she had built much of this domain herself.

She worked floor by floor, with a focus on adaptability and harmony of her summons rather than a one overall approach .

Where Gene’s world was gothic and dramatic, Selene’s was whimsical and alive.

Where his domain whispered, her domain took center stage.

They spoke about everything.

Their childhoods.

Favorite foods.

Favorite types of animals.

Embarrassing memories.

Gene told her about his old world, about late-night horror marathons and his attempts to make a living as a writer.

Selene described her years at the Academy, her struggle to be taken seriously, and the pressure of ranking highly in the novice tournament.

At some point, Gene realized he had stopped feeling nervous.

Conversation with Selene was easy.

Natural.

The kind of effortless connection he had only ever hoped to find.

Eventually, they reached a secluded gazebo overlooking the moonlit lake.

A table waited there, set with tea, pastries, and fruit.

Selene sat across from him, her expression warm.

“I thought you might enjoy somewhere quiet.”

Gene picked up a pastry.

“I’m enjoying everything.”

He took a bite and closed his eyes in bliss.

“This may be the best thing I’ve eaten in either world.”

Selene laughed.

“That’s because I made them.”

Gene lowered the pastry slowly.

“You bake?”

She lifted her chin with playful pride.

“I contain multitudes you have yet to fathom.”

Gene rested his elbow on the table.

“Selene Ardent, if you keep doing things like this, I’m going to fall hopelessly in love with you.”

The words slipped out before he could overthink them.

For a moment, the only sound was the gentle ripple of the lake below.

Selene’s eyes widened slightly.

Then her expression softened into something tender.

“Good,” she said quietly.

“Because I’m already halfway there.”

Gene felt his heart do an undignified somersault.

He rose from his chair and walked around the table.

Selene stood as he approached.

He cupped her cheek gently.

“Can I kiss you?”

Selene smiled.

“You really do ask all the right questions.”

Their kiss was slow and unhurried, framed by silver moonlight and the scent of jasmine.

It felt less like a beginning and more like the recognition of something that had been growing between them for some time.

When they finally parted, Selene rested her forehead against his chest.

“This is going very well,” Gene murmured.

Selene laughed softly.

“It really is.”

“Which means the universe is probably preparing something terrible.”

“Gene don’t say that.”

“I’m just saying.”

The universe, apparently determined to prove him right, chose that exact moment to interrupt.

⸻

The Interruption

“Selene?!? What is the meaning to this”

The voice was sharp, disbelieving, and unmistakably offended.

Selene growled.

Gene turned.

A man strode toward the gazebo from the forest path.

He was conventionally handsome, with dark blond hair that had the sort of immaculate tailoring that suggested he had never experienced financial hardship in his life.

His silver coat was embroidered with the crest of a soaring falcon.

At his side walked a regal looking griffin summon with bronze feathers and piercing gold eyes.

The man stopped several paces away, his gaze locked on Selene.

“What,” he asked snobbishly, “is the meaning of this?”

Selene’s expression cooled noticeably.

“Darian.”

The single word carried enough weariness to tell Gene everything he needed to know.

Darian continued to ignore him.

“I came to see you, and your attendants said you were entertaining a guest.”

His eyes shifted to Gene.

Dismissive.

Assessing.

Reeking of displeasure.

Gene offered a polite smile and reached out his hand for a handshake.

“Hi! Gene Gingerline.”

Darian did not take the extended hand.

Of course he didn’t.

His jaw did , however, quiver slightly.

The quiver caused a drip of what Gene hoped was sweat, to fall off his mouth and slide down his chin.

Selene folded her arms.

“This is a private gathering. You need to leave now.”

Darian looked hurt, which might have been more convincing if it weren’t so obviously rehearsed.

The drop of liquid shook wetly as it struggled to hold onto his professionally groomed beard.

“Private? Selene, after everything I’ve done for you?”

He placed the back of his hand on his forehead in a pose that was supposed to show how hurt he was.

The drop of liquid took flight as Darian turned his head in an attempt to feign exasperation.

The griffin cried out in pain as the drop plopped into its eye.

Gene suppressed a groan.

Oh no.

He was one of those cliche villains.

The griffin stopped clawing at its eye to quickly run over to the nearby river to stick its head into the water.

Selene’s voice turned frosty.

“You have done nothing for me that I asked you to do.”

Darian stepped closer.

“I have pursued you faithfully for two years.”

Selene blinked.

“That is exactly the problem! I don’t want you!”

The griffin, finally feeling better,  walked back sporting a now horribly red and swollen eye.

Gene coughed into his hand to hide a laugh.

Darian’s eyes narrowed.

“You think this is amusing?”

Gene considered his options.

Then decided honesty was simpler.

“A little.”

The griffin breathed in contempt.

Darian climbed himself up onto the griffin’s back

“Selene deserves someone of equal standing. Only I am deserving of such beauty.”

Selene’s eyes flashed.

“Only I can  decide what I deserve.”

Darian ignored her.

Gene’s opinion of him dropped through the floor.

“You,” Darian said as he pointed at Gene, “are a novelty. Merely a passing fascination.”

Gene folded his arms.

“That’s a bold statement from a man who interrupted a date to deliver a monologue.”

Darian’s jaw tightened.

“I challenge you.”

Gene raised an eyebrow.

“To what?”

“A formal match.”

Darian’s griffin spread its wings dramatically.

The gesture would have been more intimidating if Gene hadn’t recently watched it clean its face in the river.

Gene glanced at Selene.

She looked deeply annoyed.

“Darian,” she said, “this is so unnecessary.”

“No,” Darian said, eyes fixed on Gene. “This is overdue.”

A system notification appeared between them.

⸻

FORMAL CHALLENGE ISSUED

Opponent: Darian Vale

Scheduled Match Window: 30 Days

Accept?

⸻

Gene looked at the prompt.

Then at Darian.

Then at Selene, who was glaring hard enough to melt stone.

Gene smiled.

“I’ll Accept this battle.”

The notification vanished.

Darian looked satisfied.

“There! Even an uncivilized clown such as yourself knows how to settle arguments properly.”

Gene slid an arm around Selene’s waist.

“Oh, I’m not fighting you over Selene.”

Darian frowned.

“Then why accept?”

Gene’s smile widened.

“Because you suck so bad.”

Selene made a startled sound that turned into a laugh.

Darian turned the griffin sharply and wobbled in agitated silence back into the forest.

When he was finally out of sight, Gene exhaled.

“Well.”

Selene pressed her fingers to her temples.

“I am so sorry about that.”

Gene shook his head.

“No way you could have known he’d show up.”

She looked up.

“Most people are intimidated by him.”

Gene shrugged.

“I got murdered by an escaped lunatic and now live in a haunted hotel with a monster family. My threshold for intimidation has shifted ever so slightly.”

That finally managed to earn him a full on smile from her.

Selene turned gracefully into his awaiting arms.

“Thank you.”

Gene kissed her forehead.

“Always.”

Selene smiled as she hugged him gently.

Gene closed his eyes and got lost in the moment.

They stood like that for what seemed like an eternity.

After a quiet moment she looked up at him.

She half closed her eyes and pouted, “Just so we’re clear, if you lose, I’m still choosing you.”

Gene snickered.

“Wow! I appreciate the confidence.”

Selene hit his chest.

“I mean it.”

His expression softened.

“I know.”

⸻

The Walk Home

The remainder of the evening was quieter, but no less meaningful.

They walked hand in hand through Selene’s moonlit forest, talking about anything and everything except Darian.

When Gene finally returned to the Nightmare Grand Hotel, he was smiling.

The Caretaker waited in the lobby.

Lilith slept upstairs.

Victor and Morrigan worked late in the laboratory.

The hotel felt warm and welcoming in the peculiar way only a gothic fortress full of monsters could.

Gene climbed dreamily to his suite and sat at his desk.

The Nightmare Architect’s Manual lay open beside him.

He barely noticed.

His thoughts were completely elsewhere.

Darian Vale.

A griffin summon.

Both creatures seemed to be proud, snobby, and slightly stupid.

Gene tapped a pencil against the desk.

The griffin might actually have a high battle intelligence.

It definitely has an aerial advantage.

Who should fight?

The Caretaker was proven and terrifying.

Victor and Morrigan offered support and battlefield control.

Lilith was powerful but still emotionally young.

And there were countless future horrors waiting in the Manual.

Gene leaned back and stared at the ceiling.

Part of him wanted to unleash the Caretaker again.

Part of him wanted to surprise everyone.

To show the world that his stories contained more than one kind of nightmare.

A soft knock sounded.

Lilith stood in the doorway in a white nightgown, hugging her stuffed rabbit.

“Papa?”

Gene smiled and opened his arms.

She climbed up into his lap.

“Couldn’t sleep?”

Lilith shook her head.

“I waited up for you all night!”

Gene kissed the top of her silver curls.

“I am sorry I took so long tonight, but it looks like I might be having another fight soon.”

Lilith considered this with childlike seriousness.

“Whoever you choose to fight your opponent ,” she said, “I already know they will win.”

Gene chuckled softly.

Lilith rested her head against his chest.

“Because Papa makes such wonderful monsters.”

Gene looked out the window into the endless twilight.

He thought of Selene’s kiss.

Of Darian’s arrogance.

Of the creatures sleeping under his roof.

And of the stories still waiting to be told.

A smile spread across his face.

He had a month.

A month to train.

A month to plan.

A month to decide which nightmare would take the stage next.

Gene closed the Manual and held his daughter a little tighter.

“Then we’d better make it a good one.”
