Summoner of Nightmares

The Hungry Houseguest

Gene Gingerline had reached an important conclusion about his life.

Any sentence that began with the words “Congratulations!” should be treated with deep suspicion.

This realization came to him at breakfast.

He was seated at the long dining table in the Nightmare Grand Hotel, halfway through a stack of pancakes and a cup of coffee strong enough to revive the dead—a statement that, in his household, was only mildly figurative.

Sunlight did not exist in his pocket world, but the eternal violet twilight filtering through the stained-glass windows cast a warm glow over the room.

Lilith sat to his right, enthusiastically drowning waffles in syrup.

Selene sat to his left, looking infuriatingly beautiful while reading over market reports.

Mother Sarah supervised a cluster of children discussing their upcoming lessons.

Victor and Morrigan debated whether animated armor could be taught table manners.

Jesse Belle was explaining to Hank the security guard why eating her cornbread can cause “a uniquely spiritual experience.”

The Caretaker stood beside her, one massive hand resting quietly on her shoulder.

Gene looked around the table and felt the now-familiar swell of gratitude.

Then the system chimed.

A glowing notification appeared in front of him.

⸻

CONGRATULATIONS!

As a reward for your recent victories and continued domain growth, you have earned one complimentary Mystery Draw.

Possible rewards include:

• Rare materials

• Domain upgrades

• Summon blueprints

• Exotic creatures

• Unstable anomalies

⸻

Gene’s smile faded at the final entry.

“Unstable anomalies?”

Selene leaned closer.

“That sounds concerning.”

Lilith bounced in her seat.

“Open it!”

Victor adjusted his glasses.

“For science.”

Morrigan nodded.

“For science.”

Mother Sarah folded her hands.

“Preferably somewhere contained.”

Gene sighed.

“Fair.”

⸻

The Mystery Draw

The family relocated to the summoning chamber.

Gene stood before a hovering crystal interface labeled:

SPIN FOR REWARD?

He looked over his shoulder.

Everyone stared back expectantly.

Lilith clasped her hands beneath her chin.

“Please be a dragon.”

Gene pressed the button.

The crystal wheel spun.

Lights flashed.

Symbols blurred past.

Then the wheel stopped with a triumphant chime.

⸻

REWARD ACQUIRED:

Rare Living Construct — Mimic

Classification: Unstable Utility Creature

Recommended Handling: Extreme Caution

⸻

A small brass key appeared in Gene’s hand.

He stared at it.

“That seems ominous.”

The floor of the summoning circle split open.

A medium-sized treasure chest rose from below.

It was made of dark wood reinforced with brass bands.

At first glance, it appeared entirely ordinary.

Then the lid cracked open.

A long purple tongue lolled out.

Rows of jagged teeth unfolded around the rim.

The chest blinked.

Lilith gasped in delight.

“It has eyes!”

The mimic’s eyes focused immediately on the nearest source of beauty and magic.

Selene.

The chest let out an excited, hungry chirp.

Then it launched itself across the room.

⸻

The Attempted Girlfriend Consumption

Selene barely had time to yelp.

“Gene!”

The mimic flew through the air with astonishing speed, lid gaping wide.

Gene reacted instinctively.

“Caretaker!”

The masked giant intercepted the mimic like a freight train.

Chest and slasher collided with a thunderous crash.

The mimic bit down on the Caretaker’s forearm with a metallic clang.

Its teeth sparked.

The Caretaker looked down at it.

The mimic reconsidered.

Then it wriggled free and scuttled toward Selene again on four wooden legs hidden beneath its base.

Jesse Belle swung her axe.

The mimic rolled to the side just as the axe almost cut it in half.

Mother Sarah appeared in a burst of shadows and seized it telekinetically.

The chest flailed wildly, tongue whipping through the air.

Victor shouted with delight.

“Fascinating!”

Morrigan conjured spectral chains.

The mimic bit through one.

Fluffy barked.

All three heads lunged.

The mimic snapped back like an angry crab.

Selene clung to Gene’s arm.

“It tried to eat me!”

Lilith frowned sternly.

“He is very rude.”

⸻

Containment Procedures

Victor and Morrigan finally pinned the mimic using a combination of necromantic restraints, magnetic clamps, and a rune-inscribed steel crate.

The mimic hissed and gnawed at the bars.

The family gathered at a safe distance.

Gene rubbed his temples.

“Well.”

Selene folded her arms.

“If by ‘well’ you mean ‘your reward attempted to swallow me whole,’ then yes.”

Gene winced.

“Are you okay?”

Selene leaned into him.

“Yes. But if that thing eats me, I’m haunting you.”

Jesse Belle rested her axe on her shoulder.

“Little fella’s got spirit.”

The mimic growled.

Mother Sarah adjusted her habit.

“It cannot remain unrestrained.”

Lilith crouched near the bars.

The mimic immediately opened its mouth.

Lilith narrowed her eyes.

“No biting.”

The mimic slowly closed its lid.

Gene blinked.

“Did she just discipline a mimic?”

Mother Sarah smiled faintly.

“Apparently.”

⸻

The Mimic’s New Home

The scientists escorted the mimic to the reinforced containment wing beneath the laboratories.

Gene followed as Victor excitedly explained their plans.

“We already had several unused prison cells.”

Morrigan smiled serenely.

“Originally intended for emergencies.”

Victor brightened.

“Or successful experiments.”

The containment area consisted of heavy stone chambers lined with enchanted steel bars and anti-magic runes.

The mimic was deposited into one of the cells.

It bounced off the walls, bit the bars, and attempted to disguise itself as a perfectly innocent end table.

Gene folded his arms.

“Do you think it can be trained?”

Victor stroked his beard.

“Certainly.”

Morrigan nodded.

“With patience.”

The mimic extended its tongue through the bars toward Gene.

The Caretaker calmly pushed the tongue back inside with one gloved finger.

Jesse Belle laughed.

“Oh, bless his hungry little heart.”

Lilith pressed her face to the bars.

“Would you like a cookie?”

The mimic paused.

Its lid opened cautiously.

Lilith tossed a cookie into the cell.

The mimic swallowed it whole.

Its eyes widened.

Then it made a pleased chirping sound.

Gene stared.

“I think she just made friends with the man-eating chest.”

Lilith looked proud.

“Everyone likes cookies.”

⸻

A Serious Discussion

That evening, Gene convened a meeting in the hotel lounge.

The mimic incident had been amusing in retrospect.

At the time, watching a treasure chest attempt to consume his girlfriend had been considerably less entertaining.

Gene stood before the assembled family.

“Today highlighted an important issue.”

Selene nodded.

“Our home is vulnerable.”

Gene gestured toward the hotel.

“We’ve created powerful summons. Most are family.”

Victor coughed.

“Most.”

Gene continued.

“Future summons may not be as cooperative.”

Mother Sarah folded her hands.

“And outside threats remain a possibility.”

Selene crossed her arms.

“We’ve made enemies.”

Gene nodded.

“We need real defenses.”

The room grew thoughtful.

Then Jesse Belle smiled.

“Well, darlin’, sounds like we’re fixin’ to turn this hotel into a fortress.”

Gene grinned.

“Exactly.”

⸻

Designing the Fortress

Plans were spread across the lounge tables.

Everyone contributed ideas.

Mother Sarah

• Sanctified barriers around children’s areas.

• Alarm wards linked to mirrors and shadows.

• Emergency safe rooms.

Victor and Morrigan

• Reinforced prison cells.

• Automated defense constructs.

• Electrified containment doors.

Jesse Belle

• Hidden axe racks.

• Fortified entrances.

• “A good old-fashioned panic room.”

The Caretaker

He tapped several key points on the map:

• Choke points.

• Concealed passages.

• Ambush locations.

Gene translated his suggestions.

“Turrets. Traps. Security corridors.”

The Caretaker nodded.

Lilith

“A snack bunker.”

Mother Sarah sighed.

Gene added it to the list anyway.

⸻

The Mimic’s Unexpected Purpose

The following morning, Gene and Lilith visited the containment wing.

The mimic now rested quietly in its cell.

Several cookie crumbs surrounded it.

When Lilith approached, the chest perked up and chirped happily.

Gene crouched.

“You know…”

The mimic tilted its lid.

“Mimics are naturally suspicious of intruders.”

The chest opened and closed excitedly.

Gene’s eyes widened.

Selene, standing beside him, caught on immediately.

“You want to use it as a guard.”

Gene nodded.

Lilith clapped.

“He can eat burglars!”

Mother Sarah, from the doorway, pinched the bridge of her nose.

“Let us endeavor to discourage burglars before they are eaten.”

Gene smiled.

“But if they persist…”

The mimic licked its teeth.

⸻

Construction Begins

Using points and recent rewards, Gene initiated the largest defensive upgrade the Nightmare Grand Hotel had ever received.

New systems were installed throughout the domain.

Security Upgrades

• Reinforced gates.

• Magical barriers.

• Hidden weapon emplacements.

• Teleport locks.

• Anti-summoning wards.

• Expanded containment cells.

Internal Defenses

• Mimic guard posts.

• Secret escape routes.

• Mirror-based surveillance.

• Shadow alert network.

Family Safe Zones

• Hidden shelters.

• Emergency supplies.

• The officially designated Snack Bunker.

The domain reshaped itself over several days.

Walls thickened.

Runes glowed.

New corridors appeared.

The hotel became more secure without losing its eerie charm.

It was still a haunted hotel.

Now it was a haunted hotel designed by paranoid horror enthusiasts.

⸻

Training the Mimic

Lilith named the mimic Chomper.

The name stuck.

Training proved surprisingly effective.

Commands included:

• Sit.

• Stay.

• Guard.

• Don’t eat Selene.

Chomper mastered the final command after several corrective lessons and a stern lecture from Lilith.

Eventually, Gene allowed Chomper to patrol the front lobby disguised as an elegant antique chest.

Guests and NPCs were instructed not to feed the furniture without permission.

Hank the security guard accepted the new arrangement with admirable calm.

“Could be worse.”

The chest burped.

Hank nodded.

“Fair enough.”

⸻

Testing the Defenses

To celebrate the completion of the upgrades, Gene organized a mock infiltration exercise.

Selene attempted to sneak into the hotel and steal a flag from the lobby.

She made it three steps.

The mirror network alerted Mother Sarah.

The Caretaker appeared behind her.

Jesse Belle blocked the hallway.

Chomper opened its lid expectantly.

Selene raised her hands.

“I surrender.”

Gene kissed her cheek.

“For the record, you’re very cute when arrested.”

Selene smiled.

“I’m dating a madman.”

Lilith corrected her.

“Our madman.”

⸻

Quiet Satisfaction

That night, Gene stood in the lobby beside Selene.

Chomper rested nearby, disguised as a decorative chest beneath a chandelier.

The hotel was peaceful.

Safe.

Stronger than ever.

Selene leaned against him.

“You turned a near disaster into an upgrade.”

Gene wrapped an arm around her.

“I’m just glad you weren’t hurt.”

Selene smiled and kissed him.

“Me too.”

Nearby, Chomper opened one eye.

Then settled back into stillness.

Gene looked around his strange, growing home.

A haunted hotel protected by slashers, ghost nuns, mad scientists, a monster queen, and a formerly homicidal treasure chest.

He smiled.

Normal was overrated.
