Summoner of Nightmares

The first thing Gene Gingerline noticed about the newly completed academy was how different the grounds now sounded.

For weeks, the Nightmare Grand Hotel had been the beating heart of his domain.

The grand gothic structure contained everything he had needed at the time: living quarters, laboratories, classrooms, monster habitats, and the strange, growing family that somehow felt more real than anything he had left behind in his old life.

Now there was something else.

A school.

The Midnight Academy stood just beyond the hotel, connected by a winding stone path lined with lanterns and silver-leaved trees. Its dark spires rose elegantly into the eternal twilight sky. Tall stained-glass windows reflected the lavender glow of the horizon, while warm golden light spilled from classrooms and dormitories.

The building was beautiful.

And more than that, it was symbolic.

Gene stood on the hotel balcony in the quiet hours before dawn.

Although the word “dawn” was mostly a figure of speech in this world where he could control the sky.

The air was cool, carrying the scent of pine, candlewax, and distant rain.

Below him, the grounds of the academy sat in dignified silence.

The hotel’s windows produced a soft glow.

The gardens swayed in a phantom breeze.

Somewhere on the grounds, a skeletal raven cawed.

Gene rested his forearms on the stone railing and let himself think.

Really think.

Not about the next match.

Not about the next summon.

Not about point optimization,  or strategic upgrades.

Nor about the logistics of preventing Victor and Morrigan from giving the tea cart autonomous self-awareness again.

He just thought of his future.

For the first time since his death, Gene realized he had something worth planning for.

And that realization was both exhilarating and terrifying.

⸻

When Gene first arrived in this world, he had been confused, frightened, and armed with little more than his imagination and a lifetime of consuming horror stories.

He had been expected to survive.

Maybe…

He had, in the very least , hoped he would be able to win a few matches.

Perhaps earn enough points to live comfortably.

He had never imagined this.

A haunted hotel.

A small army of loyal summons.

Children laughing in his halls.

Now a school academy.

A woman who looked at him as if she genuinely believed in him.

A daughter who had chosen him as her father.

Gene exhaled slowly.

He still did not fully understand how his life had transformed so completely.

But he understood one thing.

He did not want to lose it.

The stakes had changed.

At first, defeat meant embarrassment.

Now, defeat could mean risking the home he had built.

There were people who depended on him now.

That thought settled over him like a weight.

Not quite a crushing weight.

Grounding.

Responsibility.

⸻

Selene Found Him Looking Outwards.

Soft footsteps approached up from behind.

Gene smiled without turning.

“Morning you.”

Selene stepped beside him, wrapped in a deep blue robe, curls slightly tousled from sleep.

“Couldn’t rest?”

Gene shook his head.

“Too much on my mind.”

She leaned against the railing beside him.

Together they looked out over the academy.

“It’s beautiful,” she said softly.

Gene nodded.

“Yeah.”

Selene glanced at him.

“You’re over thinking.”

Gene snorted.

“That obvious huh?”

“Only when someone stares at a building like it will reveal the secrets of the universe.”

Gene chuckled.

“I was just wondering what comes next.”

Selene’s expression softened.

“And?”

Gene hesitated.

Then, because it was Selene, he answered honestly.

“I don’t know. I just wonder how big this can become.”

He gestured toward the grounds.

“The hotel. The school. The summons.

It all started as just a strategy to win matches.”

His voice lowered.

“Now it feels like I’m building a world.”

Selene reached for his hand.

“You are.”

Gene looked at her and gently gripped her hand.

“What if I’m not enough?”

Selene squeezed his fingers back.

Gene had faced arena opponents, noble bullies, and murderous monsters with less apprehension than he felt while asking that question.

Selene’s answer came without hesitation.

“You don’t have to be enough since you are not by yourself.”

The words struck him harder than any dramatic speech could have.

Gene looked back over the twilight grounds.

She was right.

Gene now had a family.

He had a home.

For the first time, the scale of what he wanted no longer felt impossible.

He was no longer building it alone.

⸻

The Family Gathers

Breakfast in the dining room was unusually lively.

Lilith bounced in her seat, eager to tell everyone that the Midnight Academy was “officially magnificent.”

Victor and Morrigan debated whether the science laboratories should include a dedicated containment wing for “unexpectedly enthusiastic experiments.”

Mother Sarah outlined curriculum plans.

The Caretaker stood behind Lilith like an especially intimidating butler.

Gene sat at the head of the table and listened.

These people—human, summoned, and somewhere in between—had become the center of his life.

As breakfast wound down, Lilith raised her hand.

“Papa?”

Gene smiled.

“Yes, Lily?”

She swung her legs beneath the chair.

“What do you want our world to be?”

The room grew quiet.

Even Victor stopped mid-sentence.

Gene considered the question.

Then he stood.

If his daughter was asking, she deserved a real answer.

⸻

Gene’s Vision

Gene looked around the table.

“At first, I wanted to win.”

Several heads nodded.

“That was it. Win matches. Get stronger. Prove that horror stories could stand alongside heroes and dragons.”

He smiled faintly.

“I think we’ve done that.”

Lilith nodded proudly.

“We are very scary.”

“Yes,” Gene agreed. “We are.”

He took a breath.

“But now?”

He turned and gestured toward the windows, where the hotel and academy stood side by side.

“I want this to become a sanctuary.”

Mother Sarah’s eyes softened.

Gene continued.

“A place where every summon has a purpose.”

Victor clasped Morrigan’s hand.

“A place where children are safe.”

Lilith beamed.

“A place where people can learn.”

Mother Sarah inclined her head.

“A place where monsters are not treated as tools, but as family.”

The Caretaker’s silent approval brushed against Gene’s mind.

Gene met Selene’s eyes.

“And someday, if we’re lucky… a place we can share with others.”

Selene smiled, warmth shining in her expression.

The room remained quiet for a heartbeat.

Then Lilith climbed onto her chair and raised her juice glass.

“To Papa’s dream.”

Everyone lifted their glasses.

“To the dream.”

Gene felt his throat tighten.

For a man who had once lived alone in a cramped apartment, it was an overwhelming thing to be believed in so completely.

⸻

Ambitions

Later that day, Gene returned to his study with a notebook and a cup of coffee.

He sat at his desk and began to write.

Not tactical notes.

Not summon descriptions.

Goals.

At the top of the page, he wrote:

What Do I Want to Build?

He made a list.

1. Expand the Domain

New districts.

Habitats.

Training grounds.

Residential neighborhoods.

2. Grow the Academy

Teachers.

Advanced classes.

Scholarships for promising summons and NPCs.

3. Unlock New Horror Icons

Monsters, heroes, and legends from every genre of fear.

4. Strengthen the Family

Protect those already under his care.

5. Understand the System

Who created it?

Why did it favor imagination?

Why had he been chosen?

6. Build a Future with Selene

Gene paused.

Then underlined the final entry twice.

He leaned back in his chair, cheeks warming.

“Subtle.”

He shrugged and left it on the list.

Because it was true.

⸻

Walking the Grounds

As evening approached, Gene walked the grounds alone.

He visited the laboratories, where Victor and Morrigan were constructing what they insisted was “a perfectly safe lightning-powered prosthetic.”

He passed the playroom, where Lilith and the children staged a tea party under Mother Sarah’s watchful eye.

He saw the Caretaker repairing a swing set with surprising gentleness.

At the academy, Mother Sarah showed him newly prepared lesson plans.

In the gardens, Selene waited beneath silver-leaved trees.

Gene sat beside her on a stone bench.

“Thinking again?”

He nodded.

“A lot.”

Selene smiled.

“That can be dangerous.”

Gene looked out over the school and hotel.

“Do you ever think about the future?”

Selene’s expression turned thoughtful.

“More often lately.”

Gene swallowed.

“And?”

She turned to him.

“I think about what it would be like to keep building this with you.”

The simple honesty of her words stole his breath.

Gene took her hand.

“That sounds nice.”

Selene laughed softly.

“Very romantic.”

Gene leaned closer.

“I can do better.”

He kissed her slowly beneath the twilight sky.

When they parted, Selene rested her forehead against his.

“I love this place.”

Gene smiled.

“I love you being here.”

Selene’s cheeks turned pink, but she did not look away.

“You better.”

⸻

The Nightmare Architect’s Manual

That night, Gene opened the black leather manual.

Its pages shimmered with countless locked blueprints.

Ghosts.

Monsters.

Creatures from stories he had loved all his life.

Some were terrifying.

Some tragic.

Some surprisingly noble.

Each represented another possibility.

Another chapter in the world he was building.

Gene traced his fingers over the glowing pages.

He no longer saw them merely as weapons.

They were future residents.

Teachers.

Guardians.

Friends.

Family.

The thought made him smile.

⸻

A Promise to Himself

Near midnight, Gene returned to the balcony where the chapter had begun.

The eternal twilight painted the sky in shades of violet and silver.

The Midnight Academy stood proud beside the Nightmare Grand Hotel.

Warm lights glowed in dozens of windows.

Children slept safely.

Monsters stood watch.

His family rested.

Gene placed both hands on the railing.

“I’m going to protect this world.”

The words were quiet.

A promise made to no one and everyone.

He would grow stronger.

Learn the truth behind the system.

Expand his domain.

Build a place where even monsters could belong.

And perhaps, if he was brave enough, build a life with Selene and Lilith that would last far beyond tournaments and battles.

Gene smiled.

The future was uncertain.

It was ambitious.

It was probably going to involve more eldritch abominations than most people considered healthy.

And he had never been more excited.

Behind him, the balcony door opened.

Lilith stood there in her nightgown, rubbing sleep from her eyes and dragging her stuffed rabbit.

“Papa?”

Gene crouched and opened his arms.

Lilith padded over and climbed into his lap.

“Couldn’t sleep?”

She shook her head.

“I had a bad dream.”

Gene held her close and kissed her forehead.

“You’re safe.”

Lilith snuggled against him.

“I know but I dreamt that something bad is coming.”

Gene picked Lilith up and had her look out over the serene landscape.

“Well for now everything is alright, look around.”

Lilith hugged him close as her eyes unconsciously began to glow as she looked into the distance.

“Papa, our home looks so nice.”

Gene smiled.

“It is.”

Lilith yawned as her eyes dimmed.

“Do you think this place will always be ours?”

Gene tightened his embrace.

“As long as I can help it.”

Lilith seemed satisfied with that answer.

She rested her head against his chest.

“I like our family.”

Gene looked over the hotel and academy, the lights glowing like stars against the eternal night.

He thought of Selene.

Mother Sarah.

The Caretaker.

Victor and Morrigan.

The children.

All the dreams still waiting to be built.

He patted the top of Lilith’s head.

“So do I.”

And beneath the endless twilight of the world he had created, Gene Gingerline held his daughter close and looked toward the future with hope.
