The market noise resumed shockingly fast.

Gene let out a slow breath.

“Wow.”

Moira folded her arms.

“Prince Cassian tends to make strong first impressions.”

“He seemed like the human embodiment of a spoiled brat.”

Moira actually laughed.

The sound caught Gene off guard.

It transformed her face, softening the guarded intensity in her eyes.

Someone nearby cleared her throat.

Gene turned.

A woman stood at the entrance to a neighboring stall.

She appeared to be around Gene’s age, with warm tanned skin and a cascade of dark curls tied back with a scarlet ribbon.

Her eyes were a striking shade of green, bright with intelligence and currently full of amusement.

She wore a fitted burgundy coat over practical adventuring clothes, and ink stains marked her fingers.

At her shoulder perched a tiny dragon no larger than a cat, its crimson scales glimmering in the lantern light.

The creature yawned, revealing needle-sharp teeth.

“Well,” the woman said, “ That was thoroughly entertaining.”

Her voice carried a musical lilt that immediately drew Gene’s attention.

He straightened.

“Well I’m Glad someone enjoyed it.”

She stepped forward and offered her hand.

“Selene Ardent.”

Her grip was firm and confident.

“Gene Gingerline.”

“I know,” Selene said. “You’re the newcomer who summoned the walking nightmare.”

The little dragon leaned forward to sniff at the Caretaker, then recoiled with an offended squeak and buried itself in Selene’s hair.

Gene chuckled.

“He has that effect on people.”

“On dragons too, apparently.”

Selene studied the Caretaker with undisguised fascination rather than fear.

“I’ve never seen a conceptual horror summon before.”

Moira raised an eyebrow.

“You recognized the type immediately.”

Selene shrugged.

“I work with narrative entities.”

Gene’s interest sharpened.

“Meaning?”

“I write summon descriptions for hire.”

She gestured to the stall behind her.

Shelves overflowed with parchment, enchanted quills, and glowing reference tomes.

A sign above the entrance read:

ARDENT NARRATIVE CONSULTING

Custom Descriptions, Trait Optimization, and Lore Editing

Gene’s jaw dropped.

“So you’re a professional prompt engineer.”

Selene blinked.

“A what?”

“Never mind. That is incredibly cool.”

A faint flush touched her cheeks.

“I think you’re the first person to call my job cool.”

Gene grinned.

“Then your world has poor taste.”

Moira cleared her throat pointedly.

Selene ignored her.

“Would you like to come inside? I’m curious how you structured your summon’s description.”

Gene glanced pleadingly at Moira.

She looked mildly exasperated.

“I still need to finish his orientation you know.”

Selene smiled sweetly.

“And I can help. Better than anyone, actually.”

Moira considered that, then inclined her head.

“Very well. I don’t mind the help with this one.”

Gene followed Selene into her shop.

The interior smelled of parchment, cedar, and hot tea.

Stacks of books reached nearly to the ceiling.

Crystal tablets floated above worktables covered in scribbled notes and diagrams.

A large chalkboard displayed branching lists of traits, costs, and synergy ratings.

Gene felt like he had walked into a cross between a library and a game design studio.

“This,” she said reverently, “is my happy place.”

Selene smiled.

“It does look quite homely.”

She moved behind the cluttered desk and started heating a kettle on a small enchanted burner.

The crimson dragon hopped up and curled cutely atop a stack of manuscripts.

“Would you both like a cup of tea?”

They both nodded, “Absolutely.”

Moira remained standing, but Gene and Selene settled into opposite chairs.

Selene leaned forward, green eyes bright.

“So.”

She laced her fingers.

“Tell me everything.”

For the next hour, Gene described his arrival, the Chronicle Forge, and the creation of the Caretaker.

Selene listened with rapt attention, occasionally asking incisive questions about wording choices and conceptual anchors.

When Gene explained his background as a horror writer from another world, her eyes widened.

“You grew up in a world with no summoning, but with an entire genre devoted to creating fear?”

“Pretty much.”

Selene sat back slowly.

“That may be the most unfair advantage I’ve ever heard of.”

Gene lifted his teacup.

“I’m choosing to interpret that as praise.”

“It is.”

Moira, who had been silently reviewing her documents during the discussion, finally spoke.

“Selene ranked third in last year’s novice tournament.”

Gene nearly spilled his tea.

“Seriously?”

Selene shrugged, looking slightly embarrassed.

“I specialize in adaptive summons.”

“What does that mean?”

She extended her hand.

Light began coalescing swirled above her palm, forming a tiny fox with silver fur and multiple tails.

The creature transformed into a bird, then a serpent, then dissolved.

“My summons evolve in response to opponents.”

Gene stared.

“That is both terrifying and awesome.”

Selene’s smile widened.

“Thank you.”

Their eyes met.

For a heartbeat, the bustling world beyond the shop seemed to fade.

Gene noticed the flecks of gold in her green irises, the slight dimple in her left cheek, the intelligence and warmth radiating from her expression.

He felt an unexpected flutter in his chest.

Then the crimson dragon sneezed a puff of harmless sparks, and the moment broke.

Selene laughed.

“Ember approves of you.”

The dragon chirped.

Gene glanced at the tiny creature.

“I’m honored.”

Selene set down her cup.

“If you’re entering the novice tournament, I’d be happy to help you refine your descriptions.”

Gene perked up.

“Really?”

“Really.”

She tilted her head.

“On one condition.”

“Name it.”

“You let me observe your next summon.”

Gene grinned.

“Deal.”

They shook on it.

A notification appeared before Gene.

⸻

NEW CONTACT ACQUIRED

Selene Ardent

Narrative Consultant

Tournament Rank: Bronze Elite

Relationship Status: Friendly

⸻

Gene coughed.

Moira pretended not to notice the final line.

Selene burst out laughing.

“Relationship status?”

Gene rubbed the back of his neck.

“Wow! My interface has no chill.”

Selene wiped a tear from her eye.

“I think I’m going to have loads of fun with you Gene.”

Warmth spread through his chest.

“Likewise.”

Moira rose.

“We should return to your domain.”

Gene stood reluctantly.

Selene walked him to the door.

Outside, the Grand Bazaar shimmered under the crystal lights.

“Try not to let Prince Cassian provoke you.”

“No promises.”

Selene smiled.

There was a brief, comfortable pause.

Then she reached into her coat and handed him a slim crystal card etched with a fancy silver script.

“My contact sigil.”

Gene accepted it.

“If you need help,” she said softly, “or if you just want to talk, call.”

Gene slipped the card into his pocket.

“I will definitely… after I learn how to use these things.”

Selene’s smile lingered as she stepped back into her shop.

Gene stood there a moment longer than necessary.

Moira watched him with a knowing expression.

“Your pulse increased.”

Gene glanced at her.

“Are you my guide or my fitness tracker?”

Moira ignored the question.

“Selene is very trustworthy.”

“Good.”

A pause.

“And it seems like she’s your type too.”

Moira’s eyebrow rose.

Gene cleared his throat.

“Not that I was—”

“You totally were.”

Gene sighed.

“Yeah. I mean was I that obvious?”

They began walking back through the market, the Caretaker gliding silently behind them.

For the first time since his death, Gene felt something beyond all the shock and determination.

Hope.

He had a rival to overcome.

A tournament to prepare for.

A growing domain to shape.

And perhaps, unexpectedly, the beginning of new friendships between two beautiful females.

As they crossed the bridge back toward his personal world, Gene looked up at the alien stars shining above the Market.

A smile touched his lips.

Yes, this world was dangerous.

Complicated.

Possibly lethal.

But for the first time in a very long while, Gene Gingerline felt exactly where he was meant to be.
