The Grand Arena of Valerith was seemingly built to inspire awe.

It definitely succeeded.

Gene Gingerline stood in the shadow of its outer gates, craning his neck until it almost hurt.

The structure rose above him like a mountain carved by architects with delusions of grandeur and access to unlimited funding.

White marble walls shimmered with flakes of gold in the morning light. Massive banners in every color snapped proudly in the wind, each bearing the crests of noble houses, guilds, or prominent academies.

Crystal spires crowned the arena’s upper tiers, gathering the sunlight and scattering it into a kaleidoscope of fractured rainbows that danced across the stone.

The roar of the crowd thundered from within.

It sounded like an ocean trapped inside a cathedral.

Gene tightened his grip on the lapels of his dark coat and exhaled slowly.

This was it.

His first official match.

The moment where his past life as a writer—all those nights spent designing monsters, haunted houses, nightmares, and creatures meant to exist only on paper—would either prove he belonged in this world…

Or confirm that he was, in fact, a spectacularly overconfident idiot with a horror-themed portfolio.

Selene stood beside him, her green eyes bright with excitement.

“You’re doing that thing you do again.”

Gene glanced at her.

“What thing?”

“The thing where you look calm while internally screaming.”

“I feel very seen right now.”

She smiled and reached up to adjust the silver charm she had given him the night before. Her fingers brushed his collarbone, sending an entirely different kind of nervous energy through him.

“There,” she said softly. “Now you look like someone who can terrify an arena.”

Gene leaned closer.

“Can I take that as flirting?”

Selene’s cheeks colored.

“Focus, Gingerline.”

“Worth a shot.”

Moira approached from the administrative entrance, as crisp and composed as ever.

“All contestants are required to report in ten minutes.”

Gene nodded.

“Any last-minute wisdom?”

Moira considered him for a moment.

“Yes.”

Her amber eyes sharpened.

“Do not lose.”

Gene grinned.

“Great advice. Very actionable.”

The corner of her mouth twitched.

“I am serious.”

“I know. That’s why it is so funny.”

He took a deep breath and looked toward the arena gates.

“Well then, I guess it’s showtime.”

⸻

The Wager

Before entering the contestant hall, Gene made a brief detour to an area he had spotted on his way to register.

The betting pavilion sat beneath a row of fluttering blue banners, packed with spectators shouting odds and waving crystal slips.

Magical displays floated overhead, updating the odds with every new wager.

Gene pushed through the crowd until he reached an elderly bookmaker with a monocle and an expression suggesting he had witnessed every form of foolishness imaginable.

The man glanced up.

“Name?”

“Gene Gingerline.”

The bookmaker tapped his crystal tablet.

One eyebrow rose.

“Ah. You are the ‘horror’ summoner.”

He flipped the crystal tablet around.

“Current odds for your match are five hundred to one against ya.”

Gene blinked.

“That’s a bit rude.”

“It reflects public confidence in you.”

Gene pulled five silver crowns from his coat pocket.

“I’d like to wager all of this on myself.”

The bookmaker peered at him over his monocle.

“You do understand that if you lose, you receive nothing in return, kid.”

Gene smiled.

“Well, if I lose, I figure I’ll have bigger concerns.”

The old man nodded as he accepted the wager and handed Gene a glowing betting slip.

“If you lose it, that’s on you. No refunds once the arena battle begins. To collect your winnings, take the slip to the building on the far right.”

Potential winnings shimmered across the surface of the ticket.

Gene’s eyes widened.

The reward would be enough to fund several major upgrades to the Nightmare Grand Hotel.

He slipped the ticket into his upper pocket.

“Thanks.”

As he turned to leave, Selene stepped up beside him and placed her own coins on the counter.

The bookmaker looked between them.

“You betting as well?”

Selene lifted her chin.

“On Gene Gingerline.”

Gene stared at her.

“You don’t have to—”

“I know.”

She accepted her betting slip and tucked it into her coat.

Then she looked at him with calm certainty.

“I believe in you.”

Gene swallowed.

“Now I really have to win, huh?”

Selene smiled.

“That was the idea.”

⸻

The Rules

The contestant hall was filled with a nervous energy.

Gene passed by several summoners preparing their companions for their respectful battles.

A knight polished the armor of a mechanical beast similar to a horse.

A young mage whispered manically to a floating mass of living water.

Another summoner stood beside what appeared to be a gigantic carnivorous plant.

Gene noticed something written above the contestant doors.

TOURNAMENT RULES

Summons may die.

Death is permanent unless the summoner possesses a resurrection ability.

Surrender is permitted before a killing blow.

The arena will not intervene to prevent a deliberate lethal attack.

Gene looked toward the Caretaker.

The masked figure stood silently beside him looking around at the other combatants.

His knife gleamed as it hung loosely at his side.

Gene opened his notebook.

On the first page he wrote:

CARETAKER FIRST LIVE COMBAT

Then:

Objective: Identify strengths, weaknesses, and combat behaviors.

He hesitated.

Gene looked at the Caretaker.

“Are you ready?”

The Caretaker tilted his head.

“Looks like this isn’t practice anymore.”

⸻

The Arena

The contestant tunnel opened onto a world of noise.

The Grand Arena was larger from the inside than Gene had imagined.

Tens of thousands of spectators filled the countless tiers of marble seats.

Floating crystal screens magnified the battlefield for the upper levels.

Noble boxes glittered with enchanted glass and polished gold.

The center platform was a vast circular battlefield of black stone etched with glowing silver runes.

Gene stepped onto it.

The roar of the crowd swelled.

At first, the audience reacted with excitement and curiosity about what he would bring.

Then they saw the Caretaker.

The masked figure emerged out from Gene’s summoning circle and took his place a few steps behind him, broad shoulders relaxed, knife hanging loosely at his side.

He had technically done nothing yet.

And yet, the atmosphere shifted.

A thick tension spread through the arena like a cold draft.

Even from across the field, Gene saw spectators lean backward instinctively.

Loud whispers spread through the crowd.

“What is that?”

“Is it wearing a mask or is that its face?”

“Why does it feel so wrong?”

Gene suppressed a grin.

On the opposite side of the arena, his opponent appeared.

The announcer’s amplified voice boomed overhead.

“Representing House Thornwell—Lady Amelia Thornwell!”

A young woman in silver-blue robes stepped into view, staff in hand.

Behind her materialized a magnificent creature.

A six-legged frost wolf nearly the size of a truck.

Its fur glittered like fresh-fallen snow, and every exhale sent curls of white mist spinning across the battlefield.

The crowd cheered.

The wolf was beautiful.

Majestic.

Heroic.

Gene’s summon looked like the answer to the question:

What if nightmares had a union representative?

The announcer continued.

“Representing his own house, and making his tournament debut—Gene Gingerline!”

Polite applause.

Scattered laughter.

Someone shouted:

“Good luck, weirdo!”

Gene gave a little shy wave to the crowd.

The silver runes around the arena flared.

A translucent barrier enclosed the battlefield in a protective field.

The announcer raised his hand.

“Let the battle commence!”

Gene immediately pulled out his notebook.

At the top of the first page, he wrote:

ROUND ONE — FROST WOLF

Then:

Primary threat: speed + elemental attacks.

He clicked his pen.

“Ok, Let’s see what you can do.”

⸻

The Hunt Begins

Amelia wasted no time.

“Frostfang! Go!”

The wolf lunged forward with astonishing speed, claws digging furrows into the stone.

Gene remained still.

“Well,” he murmured, “how about we take that dog for a walk.”

The Caretaker’s body shifted forward.

One deliberate step.

Then another.

The contrast of the two was almost comical.

The wolf was a blur of grace and motion.

The Caretaker advanced slowly like a funeral procession.

Gene scribbled:

Observation: No immediate sprint. Caretaker prefers controlled movement.

Frostfang pounced.

Its jaws slammed into the Caretaker.

The impact shook the arena.

The wolf’s attack drove the Caretaker backward, tearing his coat and sending him skidding across the stone.

The crowd erupted.

Amelia smiled.

Gene did not.

The Caretaker rose from where he knelt in the pluming arena dirt.

Slowly.

Without urgency.

Without visible concern.

Gene wrote:

Impact tolerance: extremely high.

Frostfang circled and growled at the standing masked man.

Gene felt the first stirrings of the Caretaker’s Pressure Aura.

The effect spread outward, invisible, yet leaving the air thick enough to chew.

Amelia’s confident expression tightened slightly.

Her wolf’s ears had flattened against its head.

Its movements suddenly became much more hesitant.

Gene smiled as he wrote a new theory.

“It seems that summons possess the instincts found in actual living beings. The higher the level, the more life-like the summon will become.”

He paused a second and wrote another line.

Pressure Aura tends to affect enemy confidence and behavior.

Potentially useful as a combat debuff.

Looking out to the surrounding arena, Gene had the thought that he may need to be careful of the things that he summons.

The Caretaker was a monster yes, but he was still a human.

Or in the very least a human type summon.

If he was going to be summoning horror monstrosities, he needed to be much more careful in what he brings into being.
