Gene Gingerline discovered the need for a new summon during lunch.

This was, in hindsight, the most appropriate possible way for it to happen.

The Midnight Academy cafeteria was packed.

Children from Grimhollow and Moonfen filled the long tables, their voices blending into a cheerful roar of conversation, laughter, and the occasional argument over whose turn it was to sit next to Lilith.

Jesse Belle was helping a little boy cut his roast chicken.

Mother Sarah patrolled the room with the supernatural precision of a nun who could sense a food fight before it began.

Captain Stringer sat at the faculty table, eating in small, perfectly measured bites.

Victor and Morrigan debated whether enchanted gelatin counted as a scientific achievement.

Chomper occupied his usual place near the entrance, proudly displaying his brass plaque and receiving small pats from passing students.

Gene stood in the serving line beside Selene, tray in hand.

Today’s lunch was hearty vegetable stew, fresh bread, and apple slices.

It was perfectly decent.

Warm.

Nutritious.

Filling.

And utterly unremarkable.

Gene took a bite.

He chewed thoughtfully.

Selene glanced at him.

“That expression suggests your brain is planning something.”

Gene swallowed.

“It’s good.”

Selene nodded.

“It is.”

Gene looked out over the cafeteria.

The school was growing.

The hotel hosted more guests.

Trade caravans came and went.

Soon they would need a true culinary professional—someone capable of feeding children, nobles, monsters, and the occasional carnivorous chest.

He lowered his spoon.

“We need a chef.”

Selene smiled.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to say that.”

Across the room, Lilith overheard and gasped.

“Can they make desserts?”

Gene grinned.

“They’d better.”

⸻

A Taste of Inspiration

That evening, Gene sat in his study with the Nightmare Architect’s Manual open on his desk.

Selene curled in a nearby chair while Gene flipped through newly unlocked pages.

The book seemed almost eager.

Sections shifted under his fingertips until one blueprint slid into view.

A silver title shimmered across the page.

The Phantom Chef

The illustration depicted a tall man in immaculate white chef’s attire.

He wore a dramatic toque, dark vest, and long apron.

A spectral blue flame danced in one hand.

Kitchen knives floated around him like a halo.

Behind him stood a lavish banquet table piled with impossible dishes.

The description read:

Culinary spirit of exceptional skill.

Master of flame, telekinetic kitchen control, and supernatural gastronomy.

Can render nearly any safe organic material into a palatable dish.

Ideal for hospitality, morale, and large-scale meal preparation.

Gene sat up straighter.

“Oh, this is exactly what we need.”

Selene rose and read over his shoulder.

“Nearly any safe organic material?”

Gene smirked.

“Given some of our residents, that’s probably an essential feature.”

He continued reading.

A final note appeared.

In life, the Phantom Chef pursued perfection.

In death, he continues to cook.

Gene smiled.

“Let’s meet him.”

⸻

The Summoning Gathering

The summoning chamber filled quickly.

Lilith arrived carrying a notepad labeled Dessert Requests.

Jesse Belle wore an apron over her dress.

Mother Sarah folded her hands with dignified curiosity.

Victor and Morrigan looked fascinated.

Captain Stringer and his officers stood at attention.

The Caretaker leaned against the wall beside Jesse Belle.

Even Chomper had rolled into the room, clearly hoping to sample whatever appeared.

Gene addressed the group.

“Tonight, we’re summoning the hotel and school’s new head chef.”

Lilith thrust up her hand.

“Can he make chocolate lava cake?”

Gene chuckled.

“We’re about to find out.”

He entered the description.

A world-class chef whose obsession with culinary perfection continued after death.

Elegant, dramatic, and deeply passionate about food.

Speaks with a refined French accent.

Controls fire and kitchen tools telekinetically.

Can create extraordinary meals from nearly any edible material.

Loyal to the Nightmare Grand Hotel and Midnight Academy.

The summoning circle erupted with blue-white flames.

The fire spiraled upward.

A dozen silver knives appeared, spinning gracefully through the air.

The scent of butter, herbs, and caramelized onions filled the chamber.

When the light faded, a tall figure stood in the center.

⸻

Chef Lucien Delacroix

He was broad-shouldered and impeccably dressed.

His white chef’s coat was spotless.

A dark waistcoat hugged his trim frame.

A long black apron hung to polished shoes.

Silver hair was slicked neatly back.

His translucent skin glimmered faintly, and his eyes burned like pale blue flames.

A thin scar traced along one cheek.

He held a copper saucepan in one hand.

The chef removed his toque and bowed deeply.

“Bonsoir, mes amis.”

His voice was warm, resonant, and unmistakably French.

“I am Chef Lucien Delacroix.”

He straightened.

“Your kitchens are now under my protection.”

Lilith’s eyes sparkled.

“He sounds fancy.”

Chef Delacroix smiled.

“Food, mademoiselle, should always be a little fancy.”

⸻

A Tragic Tale

Over tea, Lucien explained his past.

In life, he had been among the world’s most celebrated chefs.

He had earned countless awards.

People traveled across continents to taste his creations.

Then, during an ambitious experimental dessert involving flash-frozen cream and explosive sugar spheres, disaster struck.

An assistant had mistakenly swapped liquid nitrogen with a volatile nitroglycerin mixture used by a chemist renting space nearby.

The resulting explosion destroyed the kitchen.

Lucien died instantly.

He spread his hands elegantly.

“I awoke to discover that death had improved my soufflés.”

Victor wiped tears from his eyes from laughing.

Morrigan leaned toward Gene.

“I adore him already.”

⸻

Meeting the French Cart

The hotel’s French Cart—a sentient food trolley Gene had acquired as a whimsical utility item—rolled into the kitchen as Lucien toured his new domain.

The cart wore its customary tiny beret.

It paused upon seeing the chef.

The chef stared.

Then his spectral eyes widened.

“Mon Dieu.”

The cart chimed.

Lucien placed a hand over his heart.

“You are magnificent.”

The cart trilled proudly.

To everyone’s astonishment, Lucien began speaking rapid French.

The cart responded with enthusiastic bells and rattles.

Gene turned to Selene.

“Why does the food cart know French?”

Selene shrugged, equally stunned.

“Why wouldn’t it?”

Within minutes, Lucien and the cart—promptly nicknamed Pierre by the chef—were inseparable.

They zipped through the kitchen in perfect synchronization.

Lucien floated pans.

Pierre delivered ingredients.

The two communicated like old friends reunited after years apart.

Lilith whispered reverently.

“It’s beautiful.”

⸻

Kitchen Sorcery

Lucien wasted no time demonstrating his abilities.

With a flick of his fingers, knives lifted into the air.

Vegetables chopped themselves.

Pots levitated onto burners.

Blue flames ignited with a snap.

Ingredients whirled around the kitchen in a graceful dance.

Lucien moved among them like a conductor leading a symphony.

He seized a handful of simple pantry ingredients:

• Potatoes

• Eggs

• Herbs

• Cheese

• Leftover vegetables

Ten minutes later, he presented a feast.

Creamy potato gratin.

Fluffy omelets.

Roasted vegetables with garlic butter.

Warm herb rolls.

Lilith took one bite and nearly cried.

“This is the best thing I’ve ever eaten.”

Jesse Belle sighed happily.

“Lord have mercy.”

Mother Sarah closed her eyes.

“Remarkable.”

Even the Caretaker paused in visible appreciation.

Lucien bowed modestly.

“To cook is to care.”

⸻

The Impossible Ingredient Test

Victor, ever curious, proposed an experiment.

He presented a collection of ingredients that individually appeared deeply unpromising.

Root vegetables.

Tough game meat.

Strange mushrooms from Moonfen.

A mildly alarming fungus.

Lucien examined them.

Then smiled.

“Challenge accepted.”

An hour later, he served a rich stew so flavorful that Gene asked for seconds before he had finished chewing the first bite.

Victor looked awestruck.

“You transformed my emergency provisions into fine dining.”

Lucien tapped his chest.

“This is my gift.”

⸻

Designing the Menus

Lucien spent the next two days crafting menus for both the hotel and academy.

He worked with Gene, Selene, and Mother Sarah to balance luxury, nutrition, and budget.

Midnight Academy Weekly Menu

• Herb-roasted chicken

• Beef and vegetable stew

• Creamy tomato soup

• Fresh bread daily

• Seasonal fruit

• Healthy desserts on Fridays

Nightmare Grand Hotel Menu

Appetizers:

• Moonfen Herb Bisque

• Raven-Wing Mushroom Tartlets

Entrées:

• Solmont Beef Wellington

• Twilight Herb-Crusted Salmon

• Jesse Belle’s Country Pot Roast

Desserts:

• Lilith’s Triple Chocolate Lava Cake

• Mother Sarah’s Lemon Custard

• Chomper’s Treasure Chest Cookies

Late-Night Menu:

• Ghost Pepper Chili

• Midnight Sandwiches

• Spectral Soufflé

Gene reviewed the menus in awe.

“People are going to visit just for the food.”

Lucien smiled.

“That is the plan.”

⸻

The Grand Tasting

To celebrate, Lucien hosted a tasting in the ballroom.

Every member of the household attended.

Trade partners from Moonfen and Grimhollow were invited.

The response was overwhelming.

Guests moaned with delight.

Children begged for second helpings.

Merchants requested reservations.

The system chimed repeatedly.

⸻

NEW FEATURE UNLOCKED

Culinary Reputation System

REPUTATION INCREASED

Grimhollow: Admiring

Moonfen: Enthusiastic

DAILY INCOME INCREASED

⸻

Gene laughed as he watched a burly blacksmith openly weep over a slice of apple tart.

Selene sampled the chocolate lava cake and leaned against Gene.

“I may never leave.”

Gene kissed her forehead.

“Same.”

⸻

Lucien’s Place in the Family

Within a week, Lucien had become indispensable.

He taught cooking classes at the academy.

He ensured every child had a nutritious meal.

He catered noble visits.

He experimented with Victor and Morrigan.

He prepared special snacks for Lilith.

He packed lunches for Hank.

He and Pierre the French Cart became legends.

Most importantly, he treated every meal as an expression of love.

One evening, Gene found him alone in the kitchen polishing copper pots.

Gene leaned against the doorway.

“You’ve transformed this place.”

Lucien smiled softly.

“In life, I chased perfection for applause.”

He set down the pot.

“Here, I cook for family.”

Gene felt a lump in his throat.

“You are family.”

Lucien bowed his head.

“Merci, mon ami.”

⸻

A Feast for the Future

That night, the household gathered for dinner.

The table overflowed with incredible dishes.

Laughter filled the room.

Lilith licked chocolate from her spoon.

Jesse Belle and the Caretaker shared bites of pot roast.

Mother Sarah complimented the soup.

Captain Stringer declared the service “exemplary.”

Pierre chimed proudly.

Lucien stood at the head of the table, looking more content than any ghost had a right to be.

Gene raised his glass.

“To Chef Lucien Delacroix.”

Everyone cheered.

Lucien’s blue eyes flickered warmly.

“May your plates be full, your hearts be light, and your desserts unforgettable.”

The toast was met with enthusiastic applause.

Gene looked around the table.

His haunted hotel had gained another extraordinary soul.

A ghostly master chef who turned every meal into magic.

As the family ate beneath the warm glow of the chandeliers, Gene realized something simple and profound.

The Nightmare Grand Hotel no longer just sheltered monsters.

It nourished them.

And somehow, that made all the difference.
