Summoner of Nightmares

The Nightmare Grand Hotel had developed a new sound.

Money.

Not literal coins clinking in the halls—though Gene Gingerline did spend an embarrassingly long time pouring his tournament winnings onto the writing desk in his suite just to admire the small mountain of glittering crystal tokens and gold crowns—but the sensation was unmistakable.

Potential.

Every polished coin represented another hallway, another hidden room, another impossible creature waiting to be brought into existence.

Gene sat at his desk beneath the warm glow of a green-shaded reading lamp, elbows planted on the dark mahogany surface as he studied the latest update from the Domain Interface.

The crystal screen floated above the desk, its silver letters reflected in the window behind it.

Beyond the glass, the eternal twilight of his pocket world cast the Nightmare Grand Hotel in shades of violet and silver. Fog drifted over the grounds. Amber windows glowed from every floor. Somewhere below, the Caretaker’s measured footsteps echoed faintly through the walls.

The hotel was alive.

And now, thanks to his upset victory and a five-hundred-to-one bet, it was also solvent.

Gene grinned.

“Never underestimate the profitability of being underestimated.”

The Interface chimed.

⸻

Gene leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers.

The Caretaker was his hunter.

Victor and Morrigan were his creators.

The hotel itself was a self-sustaining ecosystem of haunted hallways and horror archetypes.

But one problem remained.

Victor and Morrigan were producing monsters faster than Gene had anticipated.

The science couple treated “ethical restraint” as a theoretical concept best discussed after the experiment was complete.

In the past forty-eight hours alone, they had:

• Reanimated a three-headed dire wolf with retractable steel claws.

• Created a swarm of skeletal ravens equipped with tiny arcane lenses.

• Accidentally animated a tea cart.

The tea cart was still roaming the third floor, muttering ominously in French.

Gene needed someone to organize their creations.

Someone intelligent, commanding, and emotionally capable of managing a growing family of monsters.

Someone who could be terrifying and adorable.

His thoughts drifted to a specific archetype.

A little girl in a lace dress, smiling sweetly while eldritch horrors obeyed her every word.

Gene’s grin widened.

“Oh,” he whispered.

“Oh, that’s good.”

A knock sounded at his door.

“Come in.”

Selene stepped into the room carrying two mugs of tea.

She wore a cream-colored sweater and dark trousers, her curls slightly tousled as though she had been working late.

Gene’s smile softened automatically.

“Please tell me one of those is for me.”

“It depends,” she said, handing him a mug. “Are you planning to spend all your winnings on something ridiculous?”

Gene took a sip.

“Probably.”

Selene settled into the chair opposite him and crossed one leg over the other.

“What is it this time?”

Gene turned the floating screen toward her.

“I need a supervisor.”

Selene scanned the notes.

Her eyebrows rose.

“You want to summon a child.”

“Technically, someone who appears to be a child.”

Selene continued reading.

As she reached the final line, her lips curved into a smile.

“‘Beautiful, elegant, polite, secretly the Queen of Monsters.’”

Gene spread his hands.

“Tell me that doesn’t sound amazing.”

Selene laughed.

“It sounds like something I desperately want to meet.”

“Then let’s make her.”

⸻

Designing the Queen

They relocated to the summoning chamber on the hotel’s ritual floor.

The room was circular, lined with silver runes etched into polished black stone. Above them, a domed ceiling displayed a shifting constellation of unfamiliar stars.

Victor and Morrigan arrived almost immediately.

Victor adjusted his spectacles with manic enthusiasm.

“A new addition to the family?”

Morrigan clasped her hands.

“Oh, how delightful.”

Gene projected the design notes into the air.

A sketch formed.

A young girl with porcelain skin, large crimson eyes, and long silver hair cascading in ringlets. She wore a black velvet dress with white lace trim and polished shoes. A silver tiara rested atop her head.

She looked like the picture of innocence.

The sort of child one might expect to see reading quietly by a fireplace.

The sort of child whose dolls might be plotting your demise.

Selene added traits:

• Exceptional charisma

• Monster empathy

• Innate command authority

• Childlike curiosity

• Elegant etiquette

Gene added:

• Absolute loyalty

• Immense latent power

• Emotional immaturity

• Capable of nurturing and disciplining monstrous creations

Victor rubbed his hands together.

“A governess for abominations.”

Morrigan smiled.

“Our little princess.”

Gene finalized the concept.

The system glowed.

⸻

WARNING

This entity exhibits Royal-Class Leadership Traits.

Proceed?

⸻

Gene and Selene exchanged a glance.

Then both smiled.

“Yes.”

The summoning circle ignited.

Silver and crimson light spiraled upward, filling the chamber with swirling ribbons of energy. The air hummed with restrained power.

A small silhouette appeared in the center of the light.

As the glow faded, a young girl stood before them.

She could not have appeared older than ten.

She held a black lace parasol in one hand and a plush rabbit in the other.

Her silver curls framed a delicate face with enormous crimson eyes.

She looked around the room with poised curiosity.

Then she set the rabbit beneath one arm, lifted the hem of her dress, and performed a flawless curtsy.

“Good evening.”

Her voice was soft, melodic, and perfectly enunciated.

“My name is Lady Lilith Nocturne.”

She looked up at Gene.

“Are you my Papa?”

Gene felt his heart melt instantly.

He dropped to one knee.

“I suppose I am.”

Lilith smiled, and the room seemed to brighten.

“How wonderful.”

She turned to Selene.

“And are you Mama?”

Selene made a sound halfway between a cough and a squeak.

Gene’s ears turned red.

Lilith blinked innocently.

“Did I say something incorrect?”

Selene knelt beside Gene, cheeks flushed but smiling warmly.

“No, sweetheart. I’m Selene.”

Lilith considered this.

Then nodded solemnly.

“Very well. You are still very pretty.”

Selene laughed helplessly.

Gene was in love with this summon already.

⸻

The system displayed her status.

⸻

Victor and Morrigan bowed deeply.

Victor swept his coat dramatically.

“Your Majesty.”

Lilith smiled graciously.

“You may rise.”

She approached the Caretaker, who had remained motionless near the chamber wall.

Gene wondered how the giant slasher would react.

Lilith stopped before him and looked up.

“Hello, Mister Caretaker.”

The masked killer knelt.

The gesture was slow and deliberate, lowering his imposing frame until his eyeholes were level with hers.

Lilith reached up and gently patted his mask.

“Thank you for protecting my family.”

The emotional link between Gene and the Caretaker flared with unmistakable devotion.

A new notification appeared.

⸻

UNIQUE BOND FORMED

The Caretaker has designated Lilith Nocturne as Protected.

Effects:

• Increased aggression toward threats to Lilith

• Defensive instincts enhanced

• Loyalty increased significantly

⸻

Gene stared.

“The serial killer just adopted her.”

Selene wiped away a tear of laughter.

“That may be the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Lilith tilted her head.

“Mister Caretaker is very sweet.”

The masked giant remained kneeling.

Gene was fairly certain the impossible horror had become a babysitter.

⸻

The Playroom

Lilith clasped her hands.

“Papa?”

Gene smiled.

“Yes?”

“May I have a place to play?”

How could he possibly say no?

The Domain Interface opened.

Gene selected an unused floor near his own suite.

Together, he and Selene designed a sprawling playroom.

Sunlight-like illumination.

Soft carpets.

Bookshelves.

Tea sets.

Stuffed animals.

Building blocks.

Miniature castles.

A puppet theater.

Indoor gardens.

Hidden tunnels for monster-sized friends.

One section resembled a dollhouse village scaled for Lilith and her future companions.

Another connected to a secure outdoor courtyard filled with swings, climbing structures, and flowerbeds.

Gene added an observation room for Victor and Morrigan.

Selene added a cozy reading nook.

Lilith watched the construction with shining eyes.

When the room was complete, she clasped her hands to her chest.

“It’s perfect.”

She threw her arms around Gene’s neck.

“Thank you, Papa.”

Gene hugged her tightly.

The affection was genuine and immediate.

A warm certainty settled in his chest.

For all the monsters he had summoned, Lilith might be the most dangerous to his emotional stability.

⸻

More Children

The playroom was beautiful.

It was also empty.

Lilith stood in the center, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

Her smile dimmed slightly.

“It is a lovely room.”

Gene heard the wistfulness in her voice.

“But it would be more fun with friends.”

Selene looked at Gene.

Gene looked at the Interface.

Then at his point total.

Then back at Lilith’s hopeful face.

There was only one possible answer.

“Interface,” Gene said. “Expand the Narrative NPC roster.”

The system chimed.

He created a new category:

Resident Children

Soon the playroom filled with laughter.

A brave girl with freckles and pigtails named Abby.

A bespectacled boy obsessed with dinosaurs named Oliver.

Quiet twins named Nora and Nell.

A hyperactive inventor named Milo.

A gentle artist named Sophie.

Each NPC child arrived carrying toys, books, and instant enthusiasm.

Lilith’s eyes widened.

Her face lit up.

“They’re for me?”

Gene knelt.

“They’re for all of you.”

Lilith launched herself into his arms again.

“I love it here.”

Gene held her close and looked over her shoulder at Selene.

Selene’s eyes were suspiciously bright.

“She really does.”

⸻

Queen of the Monsters

The next day, Victor and Morrigan introduced Lilith to the creatures in their laboratory.

A stitched wolf bowed its three heads.

Skeletal ravens perched on her shoulders.

A hulking flesh golem offered her a bouquet of black roses.

Lilith greeted each creature by name, praising them with calm authority and gentle affection.

The effect was immediate.

The monsters became more stable.

Less aggressive.

Eager to please.

The system confirmed the improvement.

⸻

MONSTER MORALE INCREASED

Training Efficiency +25%

Mutation Stability +40%

Creature Loyalty +50%

⸻

Lilith stood atop a small stool to address her assembled subjects.

“You must all listen to Papa and Mama Selene.”

Selene blushed again.

Lilith continued.

“You may not bite the guests unless given permission.”

The monsters nodded obediently.

Victor dabbed at his eyes.

“She’s magnificent.”

Morrigan squeezed his hand.

“A born queen.”

The Caretaker stood nearby like a silent royal guard.

Whenever Lilith moved, his masked gaze tracked her with unwavering vigilance.

When she stumbled while running, he was there instantly to steady her.

When one of the larger creations roared too loudly, he stepped between them before Lilith could even flinch.

The image of a towering slasher villain carefully supervising a tea party was so surreal that Gene occasionally had to remind himself he was not dreaming.

⸻

Bedtime

That evening, Gene tucked Lilith into her ornate canopy bed.

Moonlight filtered through lace curtains.

Stuffed animals crowded around her pillows.

The Caretaker stood outside her door like a living gargoyle.

Lilith hugged her rabbit.

“Papa?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

She yawned.

“I’m very happy.”

Gene brushed a silver curl from her forehead.

“So am I.”

Lilith smiled sleepily.

“I think our family is growing nicely.”

Gene chuckled.

“It is.”

Her crimson eyes drifted closed.

“Goodnight, Papa.”

“Goodnight, Lily.”

He kissed her forehead and dimmed the lights.

As Gene stepped into the hallway, Selene waited beside the door.

She leaned into him, resting her head briefly on his shoulder.

“She’s wonderful.”

Gene wrapped an arm around her.

“Yeah.”

Selene looked up.

“She called me Mama again.”

Gene smiled.

“And you didn’t correct her this time.”

Selene’s cheeks warmed, but she did not pull away.

“No,” she admitted softly.

“Guess not.”

Together they stood in the hallway while the Caretaker kept watch.

Below them, the Nightmare Grand Hotel buzzed with life.

Children laughed in distant rooms.

Monsters prowled the lower floors.

Victor and Morrigan worked late in their laboratories.

NPCs walked the halls.

The hotel was no longer just a strategic asset.

It was becoming a home.

Gene looked at Selene, then at the closed door behind which Lilith slept.

His strange, haunted family.

His monsters.

His people.

He smiled.

For a man who had died in another world, Gene Gingerline had somehow built a life more extraordinary than anything he had ever imagined.

And the best part was that they were only just beginning.
