Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Old Yang understood Wei Kaiyun’s intention. Once they leave, this place has nothing to do with them.

Today, Wei Kaiyun had nothing much to do, so he thought of taking the kids ice skating. Before the New Year, the kids missed the village’s fishing event, and the two boys were a bit resentful.

”Let’s all go together. These two boys just love these activities.”

”I took them once last year. Those two still remember it.”

Shang Zhenkun also joined, bringing a basket and the fishing nets made in summer. Shi Jing was so happy he jumped up and down.

Feifei didn’t want to go, but Wei Kaiyun carried her away.

”Daughter, it’s not good to stay cooped up at home all the time.”

”But it’s too cold outside.” She really didn’t like the weather here.

”Dad, I’ll stay home and watch over the younger siblings, okay?” Jiang Feifei made a last-ditch effort.

”No need, there’s someone at home to watch them, not you.”

”Dad, I think next year, if you want to go fishing, you should sneak off. Otherwise, Shi Xian will definitely cry and want to go with you.”

”Not going next year.”

Jiang Feifei looked at her father in disbelief; he had no stance at all when it came to them.

Shi Jing and Jianbin were already running ahead.

”Dad, let me down, I can walk on my own. Actually, I think Xiao Qiang and Guodong would want to come too.”

”Not bringing them.”

Wei Kaiyun loved seeing his daughter in this helpless state; it made her look so endearing.

Jiang Feifei didn’t know her father’s thoughts; otherwise, she might have been fuming. What kind of twisted pleasure is this? Old Yang carried the basket, and he and Shang Zhenkun followed behind Shi Jing and the others.

Actually, the ice now isn’t one meter thick, but at least eighty centimeters thick, not at all suitable for fishing. But Wei Kaiyun couldn’t refuse the kids’ demands, and he was willing to endure the exhaustion for their sake.

Shi Jing was on the ice, ”Dad, why is there still so much snow?”

”That’s just the season, isn’t it? Didn’t I bring shovels? You two pick a spot and clear the snow out.”

”I also brought an ice monkey, but can’t play yet.”

Wei Kaiyun smiled at his son, ”If you want to play, we won’t fish then.”

”Let’s fish, I want to eat Mom’s pickled fish.” He smacked his lips after speaking.

Jianbin also nodded on the side, ”I want to eat it too.”

Shang Zhenkun laughed and said, ”If you want to eat, you have to work for it. Quickly clear the snow, make the area larger, so when the fish see sunlight they’ll gather around.”

The two boys each took a shovel and got to work, while the others smiled and watched from the side.

”Dad, they’re so slow, aren’t they?” Jiang Feifei complained from the side.

The two boys were also prideful; upon hearing their sister’s words, they immediately sped up their work.

”The area isn’t big enough, still needs to be expanded.”

The boys worked until it was the size of a room before they stopped, covered in sweat.

Next, it was Wei Kaiyun and Old Yang’s turn to break through the ice layer. This was truly hard labor. Soon, both were sweating, and Wei Kaiyun began to regret it. If he caught a cold, his wife would certainly be angry.

But seeing the kids’ eager eyes, he had no choice but to grit his teeth and continue.

The two of them spent an hour to finally make a two-meter diameter ice hole.

Shang Zhenkun was already making a fire on the ice, ”You two go warm up by the fire.”

What followed was his business; fishing was purely his hobby.

”Master Shang, look, there are fish.” Jiang Feifei pointed at the fish swimming over and called out in surprise.

”Of course, there will be more in a while. With the heavy snow covering the ice, the fish under the ice can’t see sunlight. Remember, everything in the world needs sunlight, fish are no exception. So, they will swim over.”

”Master Shang, will we have a good catch today?”

”I can’t guarantee that. Let’s wait for a while.”

Wei Kaiyun added more wood, and it was no longer as cold as before.

Thinking about facing his wife’s disdainful look when he got home, he shivered.

Shi Jing and Jianbin were getting anxious, but they knew they shouldn’t make loud noises here to avoid scaring the fish away, even without Master Shang’s warning.

After half an hour, Shang Zhenkun started pulling up the net.

”Fish, big fish, there are really fish.” The two boys were excitedly talking on the side.

Jianbin ran to get the basket. This haul had eight big fish, since Shang Zhenkun’s net was made with large mesh, not meant for catching small fish.

”Master Shang, should we do another net?”

”Sure, otherwise all this effort would be wasted.”

Old Yang came over, carrying the basket. ”I’ll take these home first.”

”Uncle Yang, I’ll go back with you, it’s too cold. I want to go home.”

Wei Kaiyun heard his daughter say she was cold, and immediately took off his coat for her.

”Dad, even if you give it to me, I can’t wear it. You should keep it on, if you catch a cold, Mom will definitely scold you.”

Wei Kaiyun smiled sheepishly. He knew he’d be chastised when he got home.

The second net was already set up. ”We’ll just do this one more, it’s getting late.”

Shi Jing looked at his dad speechlessly; clearly, he was afraid his mom would get mad when they returned late.

Old Yang took Feifei’s hand, and they ran into the village kids on the way home, those too young for school.

”Feifei, did you go fishing?”

”Yes, you can tell your families to go fish too, since they don’t need to break the ice hole anymore.”

The kids, hearing this, all ran home. They may not all have wanted to eat fish, but they found it fascinating.

After the pair got home, ”Uncle Yang, I’m not going back.”

”Alright, wait at home and speak a few kind words for your dad when your mom returns,” Old Yang said with a smile.

Jiang Feifei also laughed, ”Sure, I’ll say some nice things.”

The second net had more fish than the first. The two kids knew when to stop and didn’t ask to play more.

The four packed up their things and were about to leave when several people arrived.

”Master Wei.”

”Anyone can fish now, the ice hole is what we made today.”

”Haha, we just heard and came over.”

”You can use the fishing net too.” Shang Zhenkun handed over the basket with the net.

When the four got home, Jiang Xinyu was back too. Seeing the two baskets of fish, ”You just can’t sit still, can you? Sister Du, make them some ginger soup, a big chunk of ginger, little sugar, and give them each a big bowl.”

The two boys stuck out their tongues, knowing this was their mom’s punishment.

Jiang Feifei stood by and laughed, ”Mom, can we have pickled fish today? Let Dad and Uncle Yang clean the fish.”

”Sure, we’ll have pickled fish tonight.

Guodong, take two to the village head’s house.”

”Alright, I’ll go right away.”

”I’ll go too.” Zhao Xiaoqiang also excitedly ran to follow. Although he’d never had pickled fish, hearing Feifei talk about it, he knew it must be delicious.
