Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 549: 549 Female Protagonist’s Calamity

”Director Wu, when can Huang Hongwei from our factory be released?”

”Mr. Qian, you truly are a good leader.

If there are no special circumstances, he can be released today, but they cannot leave the county. They must report once a week and parade once a month. With Kong Demin’s case closing, many eyes are watching here. So, if there are no allegations, we have no energy to manage, but since there is a report, we must handle it officially. If they miss one, they’ll be detained directly.”

”Alright, I understand. Thank you so much, Director Wu. Can I take them back?”

”Since Mr. Qian personally came, we’ll give you this privilege today.”

Wu Changlin called in two people to bring out Huang Hongwei and Kong Mengjie.

Seeing the two who looked so miserable, Qian Jun sighed inwardly. Why would anyone ruin a good life for excitement? The other one is a pretty young girl, with so many good boys waiting for her, why choose to destroy a family?

Qian Jun stood up, ”Director Wu, could you please brief them once more?”

Wu Changlin repeated himself. Hearing this made Kong Mengjie wish she could die — coming once a month? This is no way to live!

But she dared not say anything, for she was truly frightened. She could only keep her head down, thankful that Qian Jun came to fetch them; otherwise, who knows how long they would remain? She was also unsure how her three children were at home.

Tiantian was old enough and should take care of the younger two, right? Kong Mengjie prayed that the children were alright.

”Today Mr. Qian came to fetch you. Do you think you could return otherwise?” Wu Changlin spoke cleverly, raising Qian Jun’s image in the couple’s eyes with just a few words.

Qian Jun thanked Director Wu profusely before leaving. He thought he should mingle with Wu Changlin more often in the future.

Walking rather than riding a bike, Qian Jun led the way while the couple followed behind.

”Alright, you go tidy up for now, Huang Hongwei come see me in the afternoon?”

He nodded nervously, knowing deep down this wouldn’t be anything good, but also aware he couldn’t avoid it.

Returning home, they found the main door bolted from the inside, meaning the three kids hadn’t gone to school.

They knocked for quite a while but received no response. With no choice, Huang Hongwei jumped inside.

The couple entered to find their three children huddled together, shivering — they looked particularly pitiful.

Tears fell from Kong Mengjie’s eyes — not having cried all night, she finally couldn’t hold back.

She rushed over, embraced the children, and the four loudly cried.

Huang Hongwei also climbed on the kang bed, holding the four of them tight.

”Alright, don’t be scared. Tiantian is the eldest sister and very brave, taking good care of the younger ones.

Alright, Mengjie, don’t cry. Let me make you something to eat; you must be hungry?”

Indeed! It was already past ten in the morning.

Huang Hongwei got to work boiling water as both he and his wife needed to freshen up too.

Two hours later, the family of five finally sat down for a meal.

Kong Mengjie comforted the three children to sleep; they were terrified, having seen their parents taken away and not returning for the night.

Huang Hongwei sat in the outer room, responsible for keeping the fire alive.

His mind was a mess. Why did Qian Jun ask him over? It certainly couldn’t be good.

Once the children were asleep, Kong Mengjie came out.

”Mengjie, why don’t you get some sleep?”

Kong Mengjie shook her head and sat on a stool beside Huang Hongwei.

”How long until we can live peacefully?”

Huang Hongwei didn’t know either; he felt his future was quite uncertain.

He felt unsure inside, not knowing how long life would continue to be like this.

”Hongwei, what do you think Qian Jun wants with you?”

”I don’t know. But I feel it’s definitely nothing good. I might be fired. If Qian Jun is kind, he’ll let me resign myself.”

Kong Mengjie silently shed more tears. How would they live facing such fears daily? How would the family survive?

How had life come to this? They were once a happy family, with the couple earning over eighty a month together, able to save thirty.

But now, all that was gone; the family couldn’t starve themselves, right?

Thinking of this worried Kong Mengjie, tears fell more heavily.

”Hongwei, who did we offend? Was it Jiang Xinyu?”

Huang Hongwei furrowed his brows, ”Shouldn’t be her. Jiang Xinyu is a decent person, judging by how she handled your elder brother. She isn’t someone to hide. I don’t think she’d stoop to that.

Oh well, no matter who, we can’t do anything. Even if it’s my son, what could I do?”

Jiang Xinyu still cried, having saved nearly a thousand over the years. Now the family would have to survive on it.

She feared having nothing since childhood, believing that having money meant peace of mind.

Having to rely on her hard-earned savings was tough to accept.

The kids’ registration was also with the textile factory. If Huang Hongwei was fired, the family’s food supply would be problematic.

No, she had to go to the street office in the afternoon to inquire. Even if not at the textile factory, their residence was here; they should be able to move their registration to the street.

With food supply assured, they could endure.

”Hongwei, in the afternoon I’ll go to the street office to ask if we can register here, otherwise where will we get food?”

Huang Hongwei sighed, ”I’ll go, you stay home with the kids.”

He knew he’d receive many disdainful looks, unwilling to have his wife suffer, preferring to go himself.

”It’s about time. I’ll go see Qian Jun, don’t go out, don’t answer the door for anyone, just stay with the kids.”

Kong Mengjie nodded. At least this man treated her well; even with hardships, with his love, they could go on.

Nervously entering the factory, Huang Hongwei knew many were watching. The scene would be tough for Mengjie to face.

He entered Qian Jun’s office; Secretary Fang let him in directly.

”Mr. Qian, I’m here.”

”Please have a seat, Director Huang.”

Huang Hongwei sat properly, heart incessantly praying — please don’t let Qian fire me. He knew what his wife worried about, and he worried even more.
