...

The threat was absolute, delivered with a terrifying, unflinching sincerity that left absolutely no room for misinterpretation or arrogant ambition. The native generals, men who had just spent months slaughtering their neighbors without mercy, suddenly felt very small and incredibly fragile. They looked at the gleaming Hengyuan steel in Huang Zhong’s hand and realized the horrific truth, they had been armed only to serve as a disposable meat shield for a much larger and powerful Empire.

King Samudrasena, his brief fantasy of independence violently shattered, swallowed hard and nodded his head rapidly. ”We understand, General. The armies of Samatata shall only ever look to the west and the north. The east is forbidden ground. We swear it upon the lives of our bloodlines.”

Every governor, general, and magistrate in the chamber immediately followed suit, nodding their heads frantically, murmuring their absolute compliance and desperate oaths of loyalty to the Emperor of the East.

Xun You watched their terror with cold satisfaction. The psychological conditioning was complete. The proxy state was locked into its geographical cage.

”Good,” Xun You said mildly, opening his crane feather fan once more. ”Now that the boundaries of our future relationship are clearly established, we must address a matter of internal rot that threatens the integrity of this court.”

Xun You offered a subtle nod to the heavy oak doors at the back of the chamber.

The doors were shoved open by a detachment of heavily armored Hengyuan elite soldiers. They marched into the room, violently dragging six men behind them. The captives were thrown unceremoniously onto the hard marble floor in the center of the audience chamber.

A collective gasp of shock erupted from the native court.

The men groveling on the floor were not captured enemy combatants or lowly thieves. They were some of the highest ranking logistical officials and regional supply masters of the newly formed Samatata Empire.

Among them was Lord Vasant, the newly appointed overseer of the northern granaries, and Minister Chola, the man tasked with distributing the Hengyuan steel shipments to the native legions. They were bruised, their fine silks torn, and their hands bound tightly behind their backs with thick hemp rope.

King Samudrasena half rose from his throne, utterly bewildered. ”Master Xun... what is the meaning of this? These are my highest appointed supply ministers.”

”These men,” Xun You stated, his voice dripping with utter disgust, ”are parasites attempting to gorge themselves on the blood of the Black Dragon.”

Xun You walked slowly around the kneeling, weeping men, addressing the horrified court.

”When His Imperial Majesty agreed to fund this proxy war, he sent thousands of tons of high grade steel, complex mechanical weaponry, and massive reserves of silver to feed your advancing armies,” Xun You explained, tapping his fan against the shoulder of the weeping Minister Chola. ”We expected the standard logistical wastage. But we do not tolerate blatant treasonous theft.”

Xun You looked up, his eyes sweeping over the pale faces of the native governors.

”Our agents and investigators have been auditing your supply lines for the past month,” Xun You revealed, confirming the terrifying rumor that invisible spies were watching their every move. ”These men believed they were clever. They skimmed a fraction of the raw iron intended for the infantry’s armor, selling it to black-market merchants in the western hills. They reported thousands of bushels of grain as ’spoiled by rot,’ while secretly diverting it to their own private estates to sell back to the starving refugees at extortionate prices. They sought to build their own private fortunes using the funds that Emperor Hongyi explicitly provided for the defense of this realm.”

The shock in the room instantly mutated into absolute, panicked chaos.

The regional governors and native generals, terrified that the Hengyuan masters might believe the entire court was complicit in the corruption, immediately turned on the prisoners. They realized that collective punishment was a very real, very bloody possibility.

”Traitors! Filthy, thieving dogs!” a native general roared, spitting on the floor near Lord Vasant.

”You dare steal from the Emperor of the East?!” a governor screamed, his face red with a mixture of rage and sheer terror, desperately trying to distance himself from the accused. ”You jeopardize the lives of every man, woman, and child in this empire for a few coins! You should be skinned alive!”

The court erupted into a deafening chorus of insults, death threats, and frantic denunciations. They hurled abuse at the weeping officials, proving their own loyalty by demanding the most horrific punishments imaginable.

Lord Vasant looked up, tears streaming through the dirt on his bruised face, pleading toward King Samudrasena. ”My King! Mercy! It was a misunderstanding of the ledgers! The iron was rusted, we only sought to recoup the losses! Please, speak for us!”

King Samudrasena gripped the armrests of his throne, his knuckles white. He looked at Xun You, and he saw no mercy. The King remained absolutely silent, abandoning his ministers to their fate.

Huang Zhong, growing tired of the chaotic noise, took a heavy step forward.

”Silence!” the veteran general roared, a sound like thunder that instantly crushed the shouting match.

Huang Zhong walked slowly toward the line of kneeling prisoners. He did not draw a ceremonial executioner’s blade. He simply gripped the long, leather wrapped handle of his massive, battle scarred Hengyuan dao sword.

”The mainland does not tolerate corruption,” Huang Zhong growled, stepping behind Lord Vasant. ”The mainland does not offer trials to thieves who steal the steel meant for the soldiers holding the line. A traitor to the supply line is a traitor to the Emperor.”

Before Vasant could utter another desperate plea, Huang Zhong swung the massive dao in a brutal, horizontal arc.

The heavy and razor sharp mainland steel cleaved through Lord Vasant’s neck with sickening, effortless momentum. The head detached cleanly, flying through the air to land with a heavy, wet thud near the base of the throne, rolling to a stop just feet away from King Samudrasena’s boots. A geyser of bright arterial blood erupted from the stump, splashing across the pristine marble.

The remaining five prisoners began to scream in absolute, mind shattering terror, thrashing against their bonds, attempting to crawl away through the pooling blood of their colleague.

Huang Zhong did not hesitate. He moved down the line with the cold, unfeeling rhythm of a butcher at work.

Schwing. Thud. Minister Chola’s head joined Vasant’s.

Schwing. Thud. Another supply master fell, his blood spraying across the silk robes of the horrified native generals standing in the front row.

In a matter of seconds, it was over. Six headless corpses lay twitching on the floor, the audience chamber reeking heavily of copper, voided bowels, and sudden, violent death.

Huang Zhong calmly pulled a piece of coarse linen from his belt and wiped the blood from his blade before sliding it back into its sheath. He looked at the trembling and gasping native court.

”Let that be the absolute standard of our justice,” Huang Zhong declared, his voice echoing in the stunned silence. ”If any man in this room, from the lowest tax collector to the King himself, attempts to line his own pockets with the resources meant for the defense of this empire... this is what will happen. We will not ask questions. We will simply take your heads.”

Xun You stepped forward, his pristine robes entirely untouched by the carnage just feet away.

”The foundation has been laid. The weeds have been pulled,” Xun You announced, his tone shifting back to calm, analytical detachment. ”General Huang Zhong and I have completed our mission here. The delta is unified. The armies are formed. The borders are set.”

Xun You offered a shallow, highly formal bow toward the pale, shaking King Samudrasena.

”We are returning to the mainland,” the strategist revealed. ”The day to day work of maintaining the consolidation, the restructuring of the local bureaucracies, and the collection of taxes will now fall entirely upon your shoulders, Your Majesty, and the shoulders of this court. You are the rulers of Samatata.”

A profound, staggering wave of relief washed over the native court. The terrifying mainlanders, the men who had orchestrated the deaths of hundreds of thousands and beheaded ministers on a whim, were finally leaving. They were taking the suffocating pressure of their immediate presence with them. ℯ𝓵.

But Xun You was a master of the lingering threat. He paused at the heavy oak doors, looking back over his shoulder.

”However, do not mistake our absence for blindness,” Xun You warned softly, a gentle smile playing on his lips that was far more terrifying than Huang Zhong’s blade. ”Assessors will be sent. Imperial auditors and high level inspectors from Xiapi will arrive at random, unannounced intervals. They will check the ledgers. They will inspect the armor of the border legions. They will ensure that the societal and economic restructuring continues to meet the exacting, uncompromising requirements of the Hengyuan Dynasty.”

Xun You’s eyes glinted in the torchlight. ”Rule well, King Samudrasena. Rule efficiently. Because if the assessors find that you have allowed the discipline to rot, or the tribute to falter... General Huang Zhong and I will return. And we will not come with ledgers. We will come with the true legions.”

Without another word, Xun You and Huang Zhong turned and walked out of the grand audience chamber, their heavy escort of Ghost Bodyguards falling into step behind them. The heavy wooden doors slammed shut with a reverberating boom, sealing the native court inside.

For a long, agonizing minute, nobody moved. The only sound was the soft, wet dripping of blood from the severed heads onto the marble floor.

King Samudrasena slumped back into his basalt throne, a long, shuddering sigh of absolute exhaustion escaping his lips. He was the most powerful monarch the eastern subcontinent had ever seen. He ruled an empire that stretched across rivers, plains, and coasts. Yet, as he looked at the headless corpses bleeding out on his floor, he knew the inescapable truth. He was a prisoner in his own palace, bound forever by invisible chains of iron to a distant master he had never even met.

The King closed his eyes, a profound headache throbbing in his temples.

”Clean this up,” Samudrasena whispered hoarsely, waving a trembling hand toward the carnage. ”Clean up the blood. And summon the remaining scribes. We have a continent to govern before the assessors arrive.”

Thousands of miles to the far northeast, far removed from the sweltering, blood soaked humidity of the delta, the imperial capital of Xiapi stood as a beacon of serene, invincible civilization.

The air here was cool and temperate, carrying the sweet scent of blooming plum blossoms from the sprawling imperial gardens. The streets of the metropolis were paved, orderly, and bustling with the prosperous hum of a advanced, heavily industrialized society at peace.

Deep within the innermost sanctuary of the Imperial Palace, Emperor Lie Fan, known to history and his subjects as Emperor Hongyi, sat at his massive, intricately carved mahogany desk in his private study.

The room was a testament to his absolute power and boundless intellect. Walls of towering bookshelves held the accumulated knowledge of the ancient world, alongside bound, highly classified volumes detailing modern scientific theories, steam mechanics, and geopolitical philosophy that Lie Fan had carefully transcribed from the memories of his past life.

Currently, the Emperor was reading a heavy, silk bound intelligence dossier delivered directly by the highest echelon of the Oriole network.

As Lie Fan’s eyes scanned the elegant, rapid calligraphy detailing the final days of the eastern coalition, a deep, satisfied smile spread across his handsome, patrician features.

The report confirmed everything he had envisioned. Vanga was broken. Pundravardhana was ash. The sprawling, chaotic delta and the eastern plains had been violently, flawlessly unified under the puppet banner of the new Samatata Empire.

Lie Fan leaned back in his comfortable, leather upholstered chair, lacing his fingers together over his stomach. The strategic victory was monumental.

For years, the extreme southwestern borders of his sphere of influence had been a constant, low level annoyance. Fractured jungle tribes and opportunistic delta warlords had continuously launched petty raids, disrupted trade routes, and required constant, irritating border patrols that drained resources.

Now, with the sudden, engineered rise of the Samatata Empire, the entire region had been pacified. The chaotic, squabbling factions had been replaced by a single, highly structured, heavily militarized buffer zone that was entirely subservient to Xiapi’s economic and political will. The Hengyuan mainland would no longer be disturbed by bandits or unpredictable tribal skirmishes.

More importantly, Lie Fan had successfully driven a massive, heavily armored wedge right into the geopolitical face of the Kushan Empire. The Guishuang, with their terrifying cataphracts and central Asian dominance, were the only true remaining threat to his continental supremacy.

Now, if the Kushans ever decided to look east with ambition, they wouldn’t hit the soft underbelly of the Hengyuan Dynasty. They would slam headfirst into a meat-grinder of 120,000 fanatically desperate Samatata soldiers armed with mainland steel. It was a proxy wall built of foreign blood, securing Hengyuan’s future without risking a single mainland citizen.

But beyond the cold, grand calculus of continental strategy, the report carried a detail that brought a genuine, heartfelt wave of relief to the Emperor.

Xun You and Huang Zhong were finally coming home.

Lie Fan stood up, walking over to the large, open window that overlooked the serene, manicured perfection of the imperial lotus ponds.

He had worried about them. Truly, deeply worried. Huang Zhong was a legend, a physical titan of a man, but he was old. The grueling, brutal campaigns in the disease ridden, mosquito infested swamps of the delta could have easily claimed the veteran general’s life, not by the sword, but by a sudden fever.

And Xun You, the brilliant, quiet architect of the dynasty’s grand strategies, was a scholar, not a jungle survivalist. To lose his Grand Commandant to a bout of tropical malaria in a faraway, foreign land would have been a devastating, irreplaceable loss to the empire and a profound personal tragedy for Lie Fan. The bond he shared with his highest ministers transcended the traditional roles of ruler and servant, they were the architects of his grand design, the men who had stood by him when Hengyuan was nothing more than a very dreamy ambition.

”Guards,” Lie Fan called out, his voice warm and commanding.

The heavy doors to the study opened immediately, and the captain of the Yellow Ghost Bodyguards stepped inside, bowing deeply. ”Your Majesty.”

”Send word to the Ministry of Rites and the Imperial Kitchens,” Lie Fan ordered, his eyes shining with anticipation. ”Grand Commandant Xun You and General Huang Zhong are returning victorious from the southwestern frontiers. We will not greet them with a quiet debriefing. I want a grand banquet prepared. The finest wines from the western provinces, the best meats, and a full orchestral performance. We will celebrate their return and the securing of our borders with a feast worthy of their achievements.”

”At once, Your Imperial Majesty,” the captain bowed again, retreating swiftly to carry out the joyous command.

Lie Fan turned back from the window, his mind shifting seamlessly from the personal to the monumental. He walked past his desk, approaching the massive, highly detailed map of the Hengyuan Dynasty that dominated the entire western wall of his study.

The map was a breathtaking piece of cartography. It detailed the sprawling, unified mainland, the secure northern steppes pacified by his political maneuvering, the newly established proxy state of Samatata in the southwest, and the long, winding arteries of the Silk Road stretching far to the west, disappearing into the unknown territories of Central Asia.

Lie Fan reached out, his fingertips tracing the jagged, heavily fortified line of the Great Wall in the north.

The ancient structure had been expanded and heavily reinforced under his reign. It was a monumental barrier of stone, brick, and packed earth that successfully held back the nomadic hordes, ensuring the internal peace of the northern provinces.

But as his finger traced the line westward, past the Ordos Loop, following the vital trade routes of the Hexi Corridor, the map grew open and vulnerable. The vast, sweeping deserts and arid plains that connected his empire to the western world were largely unfortified, relying on isolated garrison forts and mobile cavalry patrols to maintain security.

An idea, grand and terrifyingly ambitious, began to bloom in the Emperor’s mind.

He possessed the industrial capacity, the explosive power of black powder for rapid excavation, the logistical and mind genius of his inner council advisors, and the boundless wealth of a unified continent. Why should the concept of a Great Wall be limited solely to the northern steppes?

’If I expand the Wall,’ Lie Fan thought, his eyes narrowing in intense, visionary focus, his finger drawing a slow, deliberate line southward from the western edge of the current fortifications, ’if I drive a massive, unbreachable barrier of stone and iron down the entire western frontier, parallel to the Silk Road...’ ℯ𝓵.

The implications were staggering.

It would not just be a fortification against foreign powers. Yes, it would physically block any sudden, massive invasion force from the Kushan Empire or the distant Parthians, forcing them into highly defended, easily manageable choke points. But Lie Fan’s modern, historical intellect saw a far more profound, internal purpose.

A wall of that unprecedented magnitude, stretching from the frozen north down to the impassable jungles of the southwest, would serve as the ultimate, physical symbol of Hengyuan’s absolute, divine power. It would be a monument to human engineering that would dwarf the pyramids, a permanent scar on the face of the earth declaring that the mainland was a singular, unified entity.

Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly for the long term survival of his dynasty, it would create an inescapable cage for internal stability.

Lie Fan knew the cyclical nature of Chinese history. Empires rose, grew decadent, fractured into civil war, and eventually fell when regional warlords invited foreign barbarians inside the borders to help them crush their rivals.

’If I build the Western Wall,’ Lie Fan theorized, a cold, calculating brilliance settling over him, ’I sever the mainland completely from the outside world. If a rebellion flares up in the western provinces centuries from now, they will not be able to flee across the plains to regroup. They will not be able to petition the central Asian empires for cavalry support. They will be trapped inside the borders of Hengyuan, pinned against an unbreachable wall, where the imperial legions can immediately, effortlessly squash them.’

It was a staggering undertaking. It would require millions of tons of stone, decades of labor, and a logistical network that spanned continents. But Lie Fan was a man who had introduced steam engines and gunpowder to the ancient world. He did not deal in the possible, he dealt in the inevitable.

Lie Fan turned away from the map, his mind blazing with engineering schematics, supply route calculations, and the raw ambition of a man determined to build an empire that would endure until the end of time. He sat back down at his mahogany desk, pulling a fresh, massive roll of drafting parchment toward him.

He dipped his brush in ink. The banquet for Xun You and Huang Zhong would be a joyous celebration of the past year’s victories, yes. But when the wine was finished and the music faded, Lie Fan would present his Grand Commandant and his Minister of Works with their next impossible task. He began to draw the foundation lines for the greatest architectural undertaking in the history of humanity. The Black Dragon had secured its borders, now, it was time to build its cage.
