...

The Samatata war drums abruptly changed their rhythm, from a steady, marching beat to a rapid, aggressive cadence. The massive counterweight trebuchets were rapidly assembled just out of range of the coalition’s rudimentary bows. The sky above the plains quickly darkened as the terrifying, deep THOOM of the siege engines echoed across the valley.

The initial bombardment was devastating. Massive granite boulders and shattering ceramic pots of volatile naphtha rained down upon the coalition’s earthen berms. The palisades were smashed to splinters, the jagged wood acting as lethal shrapnel that tore through the tightly packed ranks of the Vanga marines. Plumes of black smoke and orange fire erupted along the trench lines.

For an hour, the Samatata army did not take a single step forward. They simply stood in perfect formation, watching the artillery mechanically dismantle the coalition’s defenses.

King Shashanka, riding his chariot behind the center lines, realized that standing still was a death sentence. The morale of his men was fracturing under the unrelenting bombardment. He had to force the engagement.

”Sound the advance!” Shashanka roared to his horn blowers. ”We do not die in these ditches! Push forward! Engage their infantry!”

The deep, mournful horns of Pundravardhana and Vanga echoed across the plains. The coalition center, roaring with the desperate fury of men who knew this was their final stand, scrambled over their own ruined berms and charged across the open ground toward the silent, waiting iron squares of Samatata.

Huang Zhong watched them come, a cold smile touching his lips. ”Drop the flags. Let them break upon the anvil.”

As the massive bronze wave of the coalition center closed the distance, the Samatata repeating crossbowmen stepped forward. The mechanical slaughter commenced. A blinding, continuous sheet of iron tipped bolts tore into the charging ranks. Entire lines of Vanga marines were mowed down in seconds, their bronze breastplates offering absolutely no protection against the high velocity mainland steel.

Yet, driven by sheer, suicidal desperation, the coalition center pushed through the storm of bolts. They crashed into the Samatata iron shield wall with a deafening, metallic roar. The battle instantly devolved into a horrific, grinding melee of halberds and short swords.

It was the exact moment Xun You had been waiting for.

Standing on his command barge miles away, connected to the battlefield by a complex network of semaphore flags, Xun You gave the order to the embedded Oriole Agents.

The signal was a single, piercing whistle blast that cut through the din of battle, echoing strangely from the rear of the coalition lines.

On the left flank, Prince Kiran heard the whistle. His heart hammered in his chest, the weight of his treason heavy on his soul, but the promise of a crown burned brighter than his honor. He drew his sword, turning his horse away from the Samatata lines and pointing his blade directly at the exposed flank of the Pundravardhana pikemen holding the center.

”Warriors of the western hills!” Kiran screamed, his voice cracking with adrenaline. ”The major kings have sold our blood for too long! Strike the center! The east belongs to us!”

His ten thousand spears immediately broke their defensive posture, pivoting with a roar of betrayal, and charged directly into the unprotected sides of King Shashanka’s elite pikemen.

Simultaneously, on the right flank, Commander Daruka heard the same whistle. Believing he was the sole architect of the coalition’s downfall and the future king of the plains, Daruka gave the exact same order. His Suhma remnants wheeled violently inward, plunging their weapons into the right flank of the Vanga marines.

King Devadatta and King Shashanka, watching from the rear reserve lines, were struck by a wave of sheer, unadulterated horror.

”Treason!” Shashanka roared, his face draining of all color as he watched Prince Kiran’s men butchering his pikemen from the side. ”The flanks have turned! They are slaughtering us!”

But the horrifying genius of Xun You’s strategy was only just beginning to unfold.

Prince Kiran’s men crashed into the Pundravardhana flank, expecting an easy slaughter. But suddenly, from their own rear, a massive force of minor tribal auxiliaries, who had alsobeen promised the exact same western territories by the Orioles, charged into Kiran’s men.

”Death to the traitors! The west belongs to the river clans!” the tribal chieftain screamed, driving his spear into the back of one of Kiran’s captains.

Kiran wheeled his horse around in absolute shock. ”What are you doing?! We are striking the center! We are allied with Samatata!”

”Liar!” the tribal chieftain roared back. ”The Emperor promised the land to us! You are trying to steal our crown!”

The left flank instantly collapsed into a chaotic, incomprehensible bloodbath. Because the Oriole Agents had isolated every single displaced leader, making exclusive, contradictory promises to all of them, none of the betraying factions knew who else was in on the conspiracy.

When the order to betray was given, they didn’t just attack the Vanga and Pundravardhana center, they attacked each other, completely convinced that the other auxiliary armies were either loyalists trying to stop them, or rival traitors trying to steal their promised rewards.

On the right flank, Commander Daruka’s Suhma remnants found themselves violently engaged not only with the Vanga marines but with a massive contingent of exiled mercenary companies who believed Daruka was trying to claim the coastal ports they had been promised.

The Plains of Gaur descended into absolute, unprecedented madness.

The seventy thousand men of the coalition were no longer fighting a unified battle against Samatata. They were fighting a horrific, localized civil war. Men hacked at the throats of the soldiers they had shared a campfire with just hours before. The Pundravardhana pikemen, completely surrounded by their own mutinying flanks, fought back with desperate, cornered fury, killing traitors and loyalists alike, unable to distinguish friend from foe in the swirling, blood soaked dust.

Prince Kiran, his beautiful armor slick with the blood of his own countrymen, parried a frantic sword strike from a rival tribal leader. ”Stop!” Kiran screamed, tears cutting through the grime on his face as he watched his ten thousand spears being chewed to pieces in the fratricidal meat grinder. ”We are killing ourselves! The Orioles lied! They lied to all of us!”

But his realization came far too late, and his voice was completely drowned out by the deafening roar of the slaughter. A stray arrow, fired blindly from the chaotic melee, pierced Kiran’s throat. The young prince, who had traded his honor for a phantom crown, choked on his own blood and fell beneath the trampling boots of the men he had doomed.

From the pristine, unbroken lines of the Samatata army, Huang Zhong watched the coalition consume itself with a look of cold, grim satisfaction. The enemy flanks were completely engulfed in a self sustaining cyclone of violence.

”Master Xun You’s mind is a terrifying weapon,” a Samatata proxy general whispered, trembling as he watched the enemy butcher themselves. ”We haven’t even engaged the flanks, and they are already dead.”

Huang Zhong raised his heavy Hengyuan glaive, pointing the steel blade directly toward the fracturing, bleeding center of the coalition, where King Devadatta and King Shashanka were desperately trying to rally their collapsing royal guards.

”The shield is shattered from the inside,” Huang Zhong commanded, his voice echoing with absolute authority. ”Advance the iron squares. Show no mercy. Leave no kings alive.”

The Samatata war drums beat a terrifying, accelerating rhythm.

The heavy infantry, completely fresh and untouched by the internal madness of the coalition, marched forward. They hit the fractured, bleeding center of the Vanga and Pundravardhana lines like a falling mountain.

The coalition center, already fighting a desperate two-front war against their own mutinying flanks, was completely, catastrophically crushed by the mechanized impact of the Samatata advance.

The heavy halberds punched through the exhausted defenders with sickening ease. The iron testudos ground forward, stepping over the piles of the dead. The repeating crossbowmen moved to the edges of the chaotic fratricide on the flanks, coldly firing into the tangled masses of traitors, killing them all indiscriminately.

King Shashanka, seeing his elite pikemen being slaughtered and his chariot corps trapped in the crush of bodies, realized that the world had truly ended. He drew his bronze sword and charged his chariot directly into the Samatata lines, a final, suicidal act of defiance. He was instantly reduced to a bloody smear by a concentrated volley of heavy crossbow bolts, his body trampled beneath the iron-shod boots of the advancing infantry.

King Devadatta of Vanga did not find a warrior’s death. Abandoning his men, he attempted to flee the battlefield on horseback, riding desperately toward the gates of the Gaur citadel. He was intercepted by a squad of his own mutinying marines, who dragged him from the saddle and beat him to death in the mud, screaming curses about broken promises and stolen grain.

By mid afternoon, the deafening roar of battle on the Plains of Gaur slowly faded into a chorus of agonizing moans and the soft, wet sound of blades being pulled from flesh.

The grand coalition of the east, a mighty force that had stood as the final bulwark against the Delta Tyrant, had not just been defeated, it had been utterly eradicated. The battlefield was a sprawling, horrific carpet of the dead, tens of thousands of bodies tangled together in a testament to the fatal consequences of treason and the terrifying genius of the Hengyuan strategists.

Huang Zhong rode his horse slowly through the carnage, his face expressionless. The path to the citadel of Gaur was entirely undefended. The massive stone gates stood open, the few remaining guards having fled in absolute terror.

The eastern subcontinent belonged entirely to Samatata in name, but in the cold, unyielding reality of blood and iron, the entire delta had just been seamlessly absorbed into the ever expanding shadow of the Black Dragon. Emperor Lie Fan’s proxy war was over, and a new, terrifying superpower had officially cemented its absolute dominance on the world stage.

The heavy, iron shod boots of the Samatata vanguard struck the polished stone of the Gaur citadel’s main thoroughfare with a rhythmic, deafening finality. The massive wooden gates, splintered by the sheer panic of the fleeing guards, hung uselessly on their iron hinges. The city of Gaur, once the impregnable, beating heart of the eastern coalition, was completely silent.

It was the silence of a tomb. The civilian populace had barred themselves inside their homes, huddled in absolute terror as the mechanical, blood soaked tide of the Delta Tyrant marched through their streets. The Samatata soldiers did not break formation to loot the sprawling merchant stalls. They did not shout victory cries. They marched in a perfectly ordered, monolithic column, their iron scale armor caked in the drying, dark brown mud and blood of the Plains of Gaur.

At the forefront of the procession rode Huang Zhong, his massive Hengyuan glaive resting easily across his saddle, his white beard stained with the soot of the battlefield. Beside him rode King Samudrasena, his chest puffed out in the intoxicating rush of ultimate victory, though his eyes darted nervously to the quiet, unassuming carriage that rolled smoothly behind them.

Inside that carriage sat Xun You, the true architect of the war.

The procession reached the central palace, a towering structure of carved basalt and white marble. The royal guards of Pundravardhana that had been left behind to secure the citadel had long since abandoned their posts. The heavy bronze doors of the grand throne room were pushed open by the Samatata halberdiers, groaning loudly in the cavernous, empty halls.

Huang Zhong dismounted, his heavy boots echoing on the marble, and strode into the throne room, followed by the King and Xun You, who had emerged from his carriage waving his crane feather fan to disperse the stagnant air of the palace.

Gathered in the center of the massive room, surrounded instantly by a ring of leveled Samatata spears, were the miserable, trembling remnants of the Vanga and Pundravardhana high command. These were the men who had been left behind to manage the logistics of the war, the chief ministers, the grand viziers, the wealthy merchant lords who had funded the coalition, and a handful of minor royal family members who were too young or too old to take the field.

They numbered nearly fifty in total, huddled together like terrified sheep. As King Samudrasena walked up the steps to the empty throne of Shashanka and sat down, a collective shudder went through the captive dignitaries.

Lord Kavi, the Chief Minister of Vanga, a man renowned for his silver tongue and immense wealth, fell to his knees and scrambled forward, pressing his forehead against the cold marble floor.

”Mercy, Great King of the Delta!” Kavi cried, his voice echoing shrilly in the vast chamber. ”The war is over! Devadatta and Shashanka were madmen, blinded by their own arrogance! We were merely servants, forced to do their bidding under threat of death. Spare us, and we will serve you with absolute loyalty!”

Minister Ojas of Pundravardhana, an elderly man draped in heavy gold chains, quickly joined him on the floor. ”We know the ledgers! We know where the hidden treasuries of the north are buried! We can administer the coastal ports and the plains for you! The delta is vast, Your Majesty, you will need men of experience to collect the taxes and manage the trade routes. We can deliver the wealth of the east into your hands without a single drop of blood being shed in the streets!”

King Samudrasena leaned forward, genuinely considering the offer. The logistical nightmare of absorbing two massive, ancient empires was daunting. Having their own chief ministers bend the knee and handle the bureaucracy seemed like a pragmatic, merciful solution that would stabilize the region quickly.

Samudrasena opened his mouth to accept their fealty, but before he could speak a single word, Xun You stepped forward from the shadows of the dais.

The Hengyuan strategist looked down at the pleading, wealthy men with an expression of cold, detached curiosity, as if he were studying insects pinned to a board.

”You offer us the keys to a house we have already burned to the ground,” Xun You said, his voice quiet, yet it carried clearly to every corner of the room. The Funan translator hurriedly whispered the Prakrit translation to the cowering ministers.

Lord Kavi looked up, his eyes wide with confusion and terror. ”My Lord, we offer stability! The peasants know our faces. The merchants trust our seals. If you execute us, the entire bureaucratic structure of the east will collapse into anarchy!”

”Good,” Xun You replied seamlessly, tapping his crane-feather fan against his palm. ”A structure built by your hands is a structure designed to serve your interests. If we leave you alive, you will bow today, plot tomorrow, and rebel the day after. You will use your hidden wealth to hire assassins. You will use your influence over the merchants to choke our supply lines. You will use the peasant’s familiarity with your faces to incite riots in the name of your dead kings.”

Xun You turned his piercing gaze to King Samudrasena, delivering a lesson in absolute, uncompromising statecraft.

”When you tear down a rotten tree, Your Majesty, you do not leave the roots in the ground to sprout poisoned fruit the following spring. You dig them out. You burn them. And you salt the earth.”

King Samudrasena swallowed hard, the illusion of his own autonomy vanishing entirely under Xun You’s chilling logic. He nodded slowly. 𝙛𝓇ⅇ

”But we are men of peace!” Minister Ojas shrieked, tears streaming down his wrinkled face as he realized the negotiation was over. ”We surrender! The laws of war dictate—”

”The laws of war dictate that the victor writes the laws,” Huang Zhong interrupted with a guttural growl. The veteran general did not wait for further debate. He gave a sharp, downward nod to the Samatata native captains commanding the spear ring.

”No! Wait! I have gold! I have—” Lord Kavi’s desperate plea was abruptly silenced as a heavy halberd blade was driven smoothly through his back, pinning him to the marble floor.

The throne room erupted into a brief, horrifying cacophony of screams, frantic scrambling, and the sickening sound of metal tearing through flesh. The execution was not a prolonged, torturous affair. It was carried out with the same brutal, mechanical efficiency that had characterized the entire campaign. Within three minutes, the fifty surviving representatives of the Vanga and Pundravardhana empires were dead, their blood pooling across the intricately carved stone of the citadel.

”Drag them out to the courtyards,” Huang Zhong ordered the blood spattered guards, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. ”Burn them with the traitors from the coalition. Let the citizens of Gaur smell the ashes of their old masters.”

With the political leadership of the enemy entirely eradicated, the immediate, monumental task of securing the physical domains began.

The massive, combined Samatata host of over a hundred thousand men could not remain statically garrisoned in Gaur. The territories of Vanga and Pundravardhana were geographically opposed. Vanga stretched far to the humid, coastal south, a sprawling network of naval ports, deep estuaries, and wealthy merchant hubs. Pundravardhana dominated the vast, flat, agricultural plains to the north, reaching toward the foothills of the great mountain ranges.

Standing over the ruined maps in the war room, Xun You and Huang Zhong orchestrated the division.

”We split the blade once more,” Huang Zhong declared, tracing the supply lines with a charcoal stick. ”Fifty thousand men will march south to officially occupy the coastal cities of Vanga. They will seize the shipyards, burn any remaining galleys, and lock down the ocean trade. The remaining fifty thousand will fan out across the northern plains of Pundravardhana, securing the vital agricultural harvests and establishing garrisons in the major stone forts.”

”And King Samudrasena?” a native general asked respectfully.

”The King will remain here, in Gaur,” Xun You answered, his eyes gleaming with strategic foresight. ”Karmanta is too far east, buried in the delta swamps. Gaur is centrally located. It commands the primary river crossings and sits at the nexus of the trade routes. From this day forward, Gaur is the new imperial capital of the unified delta.”

The orders were dispatched with ruthless efficiency. The massive army, having barely washed the blood from their armor, was separated into two colossal groups. They marched out of the citadel gates the very next morning, spreading across the eastern subcontinent like a dark, suffocating blanket of iron.

Resistance was practically non existent. The news of the annihilation on the Plains of Gaur and the summary execution of the high command had entirely broken the spirit of the region. Cities threw open their gates at the mere sight of the Black Dragon banners.

Samatata had done the impossible. In a matter of months, they had swallowed the entirety of the eastern world, consolidating the delta, the coastal empire, and the northern plains into a single, terrifying regional powerhouse. The geopolitical shockwaves of this violent unification did not stop at the borders of the newly forged empire. They rippled outward, crashing against the frontiers of the neighboring kingdoms, and most importantly, they reached the ears of the true masters of the north.
