...

”My father survived a dozen wars on the open plains,” Kiran hissed, his hand dropping to rest on the pommel of his own sword. ”And he is beaten to death in a room filled with your elite guards? Rumors are already spreading through the lower camps. They say it was not an ambush. They say you purged the council. They say you are slaughtering anyone who questions your authority!”

The other young heirs, sons of the fallen loyalist kings, began to murmur in dark, angry agreement. They were young men thrust suddenly into ultimate power, leading armies that were terrified and deeply suspicious of the major monarchs.

”We demand a full accounting!” the new King of the northern river valleys shouted, stepping up beside Kiran. ”We demand to know exactly whose blade struck our fathers! If this coalition cannot protect its own members in the citadel that was made as the headquarter of the coalition, then this alliance is a death trap! We will not march our men into the meat grinder of the Delta Tyrant if we have to watch our backs for your assassins!”

The situation was instantly spiraling out of control again. The cycle of internal chaos had merely reset, trading the desperate anger of the displaced kings for the righteous, fiery suspicion of the newly crowned heirs.

King Devadatta’s patience, frayed to the absolute breaking point by the endless string of disasters, finally snapped.

He rose from his chair with terrifying speed, drawing his jeweled sword and slamming the flat of the blade onto the teakwood table with a resounding CRACK that silenced the heirs instantly.

”You will demand nothing!” Devadatta roared, his face turning a dangerous shade of crimson, abandoning any pretense of diplomatic mourning. ”You are boys playing at war while the apocalypse marches on our borders! Your fathers died because this room descended into madness, a madness born of the exact same insubordination you are displaying right now!”

King Shashanka stood up as well, his presence looming over the table. The royal guards in the room simultaneously took a step forward, their spears lowering in a unified, terrifying threat.

”The enemy is not in this room,” Shashanka declared, his voice cold, heavy, and absolute. ”The enemy is Samatata, and they are currently burning their way through our eastern provinces. If we fracture now, if you pull your spears from our lines, we all die. The Delta Tyrant will not care about your grievances. He will mount your heads on the exact same spikes as ours.”

Shashanka locked eyes with Prince Kiran, entirely suppressing the young man’s righteous anger with the crushing weight of martial law.

”There will be no more debates. There will be no tribunals. There will be absolutely no more questions,” the King of Pundravardhana commanded, imposing his total, dictatorial will upon the fragile alliance. ”You are the heirs. You will assume command of your fathers’ armies. You will integrate your forces into our defensive lines. We will discuss the details of this tragedy after we have broken the Samatata army and secured our borders. Until then, you march under our orders, or you will join your fathers in the crypts. Do I make myself perfectly clear?”

Prince Kiran looked at the leveled spears of the guards. He looked at the unyielding, ruthless faces of the two major kings. He realized, with a sickening drop in his stomach, that he was essentially a hostage. His army was surrounded, his position precarious, and his allies were currently his jailers.

Swallowing his burning pride and his grief, Kiran slowly took his hand off his sword. ”It is clear, Your Majesty,” he whispered bitterly. The other heirs, seeing the futility of resistance, offered equally stiff, resentful bows.

The chaos had been forcefully suppressed, swept under the rug by threats and military intimidation. But Devadatta and Shashanka had made a fatal miscalculation. They had secured the physical loyalty of the armies, but they had utterly, irreparably poisoned the hearts of their commanders.

And in the dark, suffocating shadows of the sprawling coalition encampments, the Oriole Agents were waiting to harvest that poison.

Unbeknownst to the squabbling kings and the terrified heirs, the elite Hengyuan intelligence network had already deeply infiltrated the citadel of Gaur and the surrounding military camps. They moved like ghosts among the auxiliary forces, disguised as lowly servants, sympathetic mercenaries, and wandering holy men.

Xun You had anticipated the internal fracturing of the coalition. He had instructed the Orioles to find the cracks and drive wedges of iron into them.

Deep in the dead of night, following the disastrous meeting with the heirs, Prince Kiran sat alone in his heavily guarded command tent, staring blankly at his father’s blood stained armor.

A shadow detached itself from the corner of the tent.

Kiran instinctively reached for his dagger, but the figure held up a hand, revealing the humble, unassuming garb of a native scribe. But the eyes beneath the hood were sharp, calculating, and entirely unafraid.

”They murdered your father, Prince Kiran,” the Oriole Agent whispered, his voice smooth and laced with a deeply manufactured sympathy. ”And they will murder you the moment your ten thousand spears have bled enough to secure their borders.”

”Guards!” Kiran shouted, but the agent did not flinch.

”Your guards have been compensated to look the other way for five minutes,” the agent said calmly. ”Listen to me. The coalition is a rotting corpse. Devadatta and Shashanka are using you as meat to feed the Delta Tyrant. They offer you nothing but threats and a shallow grave.”

Kiran’s hand hovered over his dagger, but his hatred for the major kings stayed his hand. ”Who are you? A spy for Samudrasena?”

The Oriole Agent smiled perfectly in the dim light. ”I am a messenger of the true, inevitable future. The Emperor in the East, the master of Samatata, knows that the western hills are honorable. He knows that your father was a victim of Vanga’s arrogance. The Emperor does not wish to destroy you, Kiran. He wishes to elevate you.”

The agent stepped closer, planting the seed of ultimate betrayal.

”The Samatata army numbers over a hundred thousand, armed with steel you cannot break and machines that tear down mountains. The coalition will fall. It is already a certainty,” the agent whispered, his words dripping with absolute conviction. ”But if you continue to stand with Shashanka, your ten thousand spears will be shattered. However... if you were to shift your allegiance. If, during the heat of the impending battle, the warriors of the western hills were to suddenly... turn their spears upon the Pundravardhana flanks...”

Kiran’s breath caught in his throat. It was treason of the highest magnitude. It was the complete betrayal of his homeland.

”If you hand us the coalition,” the Oriole finished, placing a heavy, sealed scroll on the table beside the bloody armor, ”the Delta Tyrant promises you more than survival. He promises you the entire western plains. You will not be a minor chief subject to Shashanka’s whims. You will be a King, ruling under the protection of the Black Dragon. The choice is yours, Kiran. Burn for men who murdered your father, or rise as a king in the new world.”

Before Kiran could respond, the agent slipped backward, vanishing into the shadows of the tent as seamlessly as he had appeared, leaving the young prince alone with his grief and a highly classified, treasonous pact.

This exact conversation, tailored with specific promises of wealth, revenge, and survival, was being quietly replicated across the entire coalition encampment. The Oriole Agents were systematically injecting the venom of betrayal into the ears of every disgruntled commander, terrified minor king, and resentful heir.

The mighty Vanga-Pundravardhana coalition was no longer a unified army, it was a fragile glass structure, riddled with thousands of microscopic, invisible cracks, waiting for the slightest pressure to shatter completely.

And that pressure was coming with terrifying, mechanical speed.

While the coalition rotted from the inside out, paralyzed by suspicion and internal politics, the dual Samatata armies continued their apocalyptic advance on the outside.

Under the brilliant, synchronized directions of Xun You and Huang Zhong, the native generals pushed their men to the absolute limit. The Samatata columns did not rest. They bypassed the heavily fortified strongholds, leaving small containing forces to starve them out, and instead struck like lightning against the softer, vital logistical hubs of the coalition domain.

In the north, the remaining minor cities of the plains were subjected to relentless, continuous bombardment. The massive counterweight trebuchets hurled flaming payloads day and night, breaking the spirit of the defenders before the iron testudos even reached the walls. City after city raised the white flag, only to have their granaries emptied, their treasuries stripped, and their young men violently conscripted into the ever swelling ranks of the Delta Tyrant.

In the south, the Samatata amphibious forces completely secured the winding river networks, effectively cutting Vanga off from its primary inland trade routes. They burned the secondary shipyards, slaughtered the localized garrisons, and choked the coastal empire’s economy to death.

The eastern subcontinent was drowning in blood. The sky was permanently stained gray with the smoke of burning cities. The Samatata war machine, an unstoppable juggernaut of Hengyuan steel, industrial logistics, and ruthless psychological warfare, was devouring the world, drawing ever closer to the final, heavily fortified citadels of the desperate, fracturing coalition.

The dual Samatata columns operated with the relentless, unfeeling efficiency of a scythe sweeping through tall grass. Within a span of two agonizing months, the political map of the eastern subcontinent was completely, violently redrawn. The wealthy river chiefdoms, the ancient hill tribes, and the independent merchant city states that had once formed the robust buffer zones of the coalition were utterly erased.

There were no more minor kingdoms left to burn. There were no more independent alliances left to shatter. The vast, sprawling domains of Vanga and Pundravardhana now stood completely isolated, their physical borders directly exposed to the encroaching shadow of the Black Dragon. The minor states had been swallowed whole, their granaries emptied to feed the Samatata beast, and their surviving men violently pressed into the auxiliary ranks of the Delta Tyrant.

Inside the heavily fortified citadel of Gaur, the reality of their isolation hung like a suffocating shroud over the high command.

King Devadatta of Vanga and King Shashanka of Pundravardhana convened what would be their final, desperate war council. The grand chamber, scrubbed of the blood from the previous massacre but still haunted by its memory, was packed with the surviving leadership of the coalition.

However, the men surrounding the massive teakwood table were no longer proud monarchs in their own right. They were displaced exiles, Prince Kiran of the western hills, the newly appointed chieftains of the Suhma remnants, and the battered generals of the fallen northern valleys. They commanded tens of thousands of men, but they possessed not a single inch of land. They were living off Vanga grain and sleeping in Pundravardhana tents.

King Shashanka leaned over the map, his bronze armor dull in the flickering torchlight. His eyes were bloodshot, completely deprived of sleep, but his voice retained the harsh, dictatorial edge of a cornered warlord.

”The buffer is gone,” Shashanka stated bluntly, tracing the wide, flat expanse of the plains that stretched directly before the citadel of Gaur. ”The Samatata forces have ceased their peripheral raids. Our scouts report that their northern and southern columns are currently converging. They are grouping back into a single, massive host. They intend to march directly upon this citadel and end the war in a single stroke.” ℴ𝒗ⅇ𝑙.

King Devadatta wiped a sheen of nervous sweat from his brow, his usually immaculate silks looking heavy and unkempt. ”If they lay siege to Gaur, we will starve. Our outer granaries have been plundered. We cannot survive a war of attrition trapped behind these walls.”

”Which is exactly why we will not hide behind them,” Shashanka countered, his fist coming down on the map. ”We will meet them on the Plains of Gaur. It is a massive, unbroken expanse of flat earth. It nullifies their ability to use those damned amphibious barges, and it gives our heavy chariots and remaining war elephants the room they need to maneuver. We will construct a network of spiked trenches, earthen berms, and wooden palisades across the entire valley approach.”

Shashanka looked up, his piercing gaze sweeping over the assembled heirs and displaced commanders.

”We will anchor our center with the elite Pundravardhana pikemen and the Vanga heavy marines,” the King instructed, detailing the fatal deployment. ”Prince Kiran, your ten thousand spears from the western hills will hold the left flank. Commander Daruka, your Suhma remnants will hold the right. We will funnel the Delta Tyrant’s iron squares directly into our prepared kill zones. When their momentum stalls against our center, the flanks will collapse inward, crushing them in a vice.”

Prince Kiran stood perfectly still, his face an unreadable mask of solemn obedience. ”It is a sound strategy, Your Majesty,” Kiran lied smoothly, bowing his head. ”The western hills will hold the left flank. We will not let you down.”

Commander Daruka, a scarred veteran of the river valleys who had lost his three sons to the Samatata advance, offered an equally rigid bow. ”The Suhma remnants will hold the right. We will bleed them for every inch of earth.”

A wave of verbal agreement rippled through the rest of the displaced leaders. They pledged their lives, their swords, and the blood of their men to the defense of Gaur. They spoke with the fiery, desperate passion of men who had nowhere left to run.

King Devadatta let out a long, heavy sigh of relief, leaning back in his chair. ”Good. The gods bear witness to our unity. We fight as one, or we die as one. Distribute the extra grain rations to the men tonight. Tomorrow, we dig the trenches.”

As the council adjourned and the commanders filed out of the chamber into the humid night air, neither Devadatta nor Shashanka realized that the room they had just commanded was entirely hollow.

They believed they had secured the absolute obedience of the displaced armies through the sheer necessity of survival and the monopoly on food supplies. They were blind to the venom that the Oriole Agents had already pumped into the veins of their coalition.

In the dark, suffocating shadows of the sprawling encampments, the truth was an intricate, highly compartmentalized web of treason.

Prince Kiran returned to his command tent, his heart hammering against his ribs. Beneath his breastplate, pressed against his skin, was the sealed scroll from the Hengyuan intelligence network. He had agreed to the terms. When the battle lines engaged, he was going to turn his ten thousand spears inward, plunging them into the exposed ribs of the Pundravardhana center. In exchange, he would be crowned King of the western plains.

But what Prince Kiran did not know, what the Oriole Agents had deliberately and masterfully omitted, was that Commander Daruka of the Suhma remnants had accepted the exact same deal. Daruka had been promised the exact same crown in exchange for turning the right flank. Furthermore, dozens of minor captains and displaced chieftains scattered throughout the auxiliary forces had all been approached separately in the dead of night. They had all been offered localized power, wealth, and survival by the whispers in the dark.

Xun You had not just bought a betrayal; he had engineered a localized apocalypse. He had weaponized the greed, the grief, and the desperate paranoia of the displaced leaders against one another, ensuring that when the spark was finally lit, the resulting explosion would not just cripple the coalition, it would consume it entirely.

Two days later, the earth itself began to tremble.

The reunification of the Samatata army was a terrifying, monolithic spectacle. The northern and southern columns, having gorged themselves on the wealth and manpower of the fallen kingdoms, merged upon the main trade road leading to the Plains of Gaur.

The host that emerged from the treeline was not an army, it was an act of nature. Over one hundred and twenty thousand men marched under the crimson and gold banners of the Delta Tyrant. The core of the army remained the pristine, untouchable squares of the heavy infantry, their interlocking iron scale armor completely obscuring the men beneath.

The mechanical repeating crossbowmen marched on the flanks, their weapons resting heavily on their shoulders. Behind them, hundreds of draft elephants dragged the colossal, disassembled components of the Hengyuan counterweight trebuchets.

Riding at the absolute forefront of this mechanized leviathan was Huang Zhong. The veteran general did not bother to hide in a command tent. He sat atop a massive, heavily armored warhorse, his white beard flowing in the wind, a massive, custom forged Hengyuan glaive resting easily across his lap. He looked across the wide, flat expanse of the Plains of Gaur, his eyes narrowing as he evaluated the coalition’s defenses.

The coalition had utilized their time well. A massive, jagged scar of freshly turned earth stretched across the valley. Deep, spiked trenches were backed by high earthen berms and thick wooden palisades. Behind these fortifications stood the final, desperate hope of the eastern world.

Seventy thousand men waited in absolute silence. In the center, the Pundravardhana pikemen and the Vanga marines formed a dense, bristling forest of bronze and wood. On the left flank, Prince Kiran’s western hill warriors stood in tight formations, their spears angled outward.

On the right, Commander Daruka’s Suhma remnants held the line. Behind the center, King Shashanka’s heavy chariots and the last surviving war elephants waited in reserve, ready to plug any breach.

”They dig their own graves, and build the walls to keep themselves inside,” Huang Zhong rumbled in his native tongue, glancing back at the Samatata proxy generals. ”Deploy the trebuchets. We will not charge their stakes. We will shatter the earth beneath their feet, and let them bleed out in the dust.”

The Samatata war drums abruptly changed their rhythm, from a steady, marching beat to a rapid, aggressive cadence. The massive counterweight trebuchets were rapidly assembled just out of range of the coalition’s rudimentary bows. The sky above the plains quickly darkened as the terrifying, deep THOOM of the siege engines echoed across the valley.
