...

When the Oriole Agents intercepted these whispers and delivered the reports to the imperial study, Lie Fan did not smile. The warm, progressive husband vanished, instantly replaced by the cold, calculating, and deeply traditional Emperor. Lie Fan had to decisively squash this idea before it could take root and fracture the empire. It was not that he discriminated against women’s capabilities, bhis own wives were proof that he believed in their sheer brilliance. He had shattered countless traditions to elevate them. He was perfectly willing to allow a woman to become a ruling Duchess, a powerful provincial governor, a city mayor, or a grand general.

But the Dragon Throne was different.

The male line, the unbroken chain of fathers to sons, was the absolute, foundational bedrock of Chinese dynastic stability. Lie Fan knew that it was a deeply traditional, heavily patriarchal way of thinking, but it was the one, single compromise he absolutely would not give.

He knew the historical precedents from his past life. He knew of Wu Zetian. While she had been a brilliant ruler, her ascension had caused decades of horrific, bloody internal purges, massive civil wars, and nearly destroyed the Tang Dynasty’s stability because the deeply entrenched patriarchal society fundamentally rejected her legitimacy.

Lie Fan refused to subject his future empire to that level of catastrophic succession crisis. The bloodline had to remain clear, undisputed, and male to ensure a peaceful transition of power. The idea of a ruling Empress was deemed too dangerous, too destabilizing for the fragile, newly unified continent.

He did not make a public spectacle of it, knowing that a loud denunciation would only legitimize the debate. Instead, Lie Fan outlawed the concept secretly and ruthlessly.

He issued highly classified, direct orders to Cai Wenji and the headmasters of the Xiapi Academy to immediately, quietly expel any scholar found promoting the idea of female imperial succession. He ordered the Oriole Agents to silence the radical voices in the merchant guilds with heavily implied threats to their wealth.

The message was delivered clearly in the shadows: women could reach for the stars in Hengyuan, but the sun belonged exclusively to the Emperor and his sons. The radical idea was suffocated in its crib, ensuring the dynastic bloodline remained secure. 𝖿𝖗ⅇℴ𝑚

While the capital balanced progress and tradition, thousands of miles away in the sweltering, muddy delta of Samatata, the brutal training and relentless restructuring under Huang Zhong and Xun You’s supervision had finally bore terrifying fruit.

The transformation was absolute. The Samatata army was no longer a disorganized, arrogant mob of mercenaries relying on chaotic elephant charges. They had been forged in the fires of Hengyuan discipline. They marched in perfect, silent unison. They understood the strategic value of logistics, flanking maneuvers, and unbreakable shield walls.

Standing on the high balconies of the Karmanta palace, watching a massive contingent of fifty thousand native heavy infantry execute a flawless, complex tactical wheeling maneuver in the courtyard below, Huang Zhong and Xun You shared a look of cold, predatory satisfaction.

”The blade is sharp,” Huang Zhong rumbled, his old eyes gleaming as he watched the native soldiers thrust their spears in perfect synchronization. ”They no longer fight like tribe raiders. They fight like an imperial army.”

Xun You slowly waved his crane feather fan, the humid breeze catching the feathers. ”Then it is time to swing the blade, General. We have let Vanga and Pundravardhana grow complacent in their caution. It is time to begin planning the attack against the nearest kingdom.”

To ensure the puppet army was truly lethal, the hidden Hengyuan foundries had been working overtime. The fifty thousand Samatata soldiers were now heavily equipped with high quality Hengyuan steel weapons, razor sharp dao swords, armor piercing polearms, and repeating crossbows. They were outfitted with interlocking iron scale armor that was vastly superior to the boiled leather they had previously worn.

Furthermore, a dozen massive, devastating Hengyuan engineered counterweight trebuchets had been constructed and gifted to the native siege engineers, capable of shattering the stone walls of their enemies from a terrifying distance.

However, there was a strict, unbreakable line drawn in the sand.

Other than the steel and the trebuchets, Huang Zhong and Xun You did not give the native army anything else. The devastating black powder cannons, the sky darkening Hwachas, and the revolutionary flintlock firearms were absolutely forbidden. Those were top tier, world ending weapons that belonged exclusively to the Hengyuan Dynasty. The puppet army was to fight with steel, ensuring that if they ever managed to rebel, they could still be effortlessly crushed by the thunder of the true imperial legions.

When the grueling preparations were finally complete, the vast, newly equipped Samatata army was assembled on the grand plains outside the capital.

King Samudrasena, flanked by his new, merit based generals, rode out to address his forces. The King was terrified of the Hengyuan masters watching him from the shadows, but he knew exactly what he had to do. He had to inspire these men to fight a war they had not asked for.

Sitting atop a massive, armored war elephant, the King looked out over the ocean of gleaming Hengyuan steel.

”Warriors of Samatata!” the King boomed, his voice carrying a desperate, fierce urgency. ”For too long, we have allowed the arrogance of the west to dictate our borders! For too long, we have watched them grow fat while we squabble in the mud!”

He drew his new, Hengyuan forged sword, raising it high. ”Today, we march! Not just for glory, but for survival! We have been forged anew! You carry steel that can pierce the heavens! We march to the west, and we must win, because there are no other options! We conquer, or we perish!”

The native soldiers, empowered by their new armor and drilled to perfection, let out a massive, deafening roar of approval, slamming their spears against their shields. The King had spoken the truth; under the iron grip of their hidden masters, failure was absolutely not an option.

And then, the unexpected, devastating attack began.

Xun You did not target the naval titan Vanga, nor did he aim for the heavily fortified borders of Pundravardhana. Those powers were expecting an attack. Instead, Xun You orchestrated a brilliant, lightning-fast strike against a smaller, highly wealthy, and entirely unsuspecting target: The Tripura Tribes, the forest lords to the dense west.

The Tripura were rich in ivory, cotton, and resources vital to fueling the impending larger wars. More importantly, they had previously allied with Samatata. They considered the delta kingdom a chaotic, but generally friendly, neighbor.

They were caught completely by surprise.

The Samatata army did not march down the main trade roads. Utilizing the deceptive, rapid deployment tactics taught by Huang Zhong, they moved through the deep jungle paths in the dead of night.

When the dawn broke, the tribal elders of Tripura woke to find their major bamboo fortresses and central villages entirely surrounded by a massive, highly disciplined army wielding mainland steel.

The native forest fighters of Tripura, armed with bone tipped spears and light bamboo bows, rushed out to mount a defense. They expected the usual, disorganized skirmish they had fought for generations.

Instead, they ran headlong into an unbreakable, interlocking wall of Hengyuan iron shields. The Samatata soldiers held the line flawlessly, absorbing the arrows without breaking a sweat. Then, on a single, sharp drumbeat, the shield wall parted, and thousands of native repeating crossbowmen unleashed a devastating, mechanical storm of iron-tipped bolts.

The tribal vanguard was shredded in seconds. ℯ𝓵.

Before the Tripura elders could even attempt to rally their fleeing warriors or send messengers for aid, the massive Hengyuan trebuchets, operated by Samatata engineers, unleashed a barrage of massive, flaming boulders directly into the highly flammable bamboo fortresses.

The attack was overwhelming, merciless, and terrifyingly efficient. The Samatata army, operating as a flawless, mainland trained proxy, was executing their first conquest. The blood soaked shield of the Hengyuan Dynasty had officially begun its brutal, westward expansion across the Indian subcontinent.

The acrid smoke of burning green bamboo and scorched thatch hung heavy in the humid morning air, casting a sickly, yellowish pall over the once-pristine forest settlements of the Tripura tribes. The battle, if it could even be dignified with such a term, had been an absolute, one sided slaughter. The interlocking iron shields of the Samatata heavy infantry had not broken, and the mechanical, relentless rhythm of the repeating crossbows had turned the tribal vanguard into a field of pincushions.

Now, amidst the smoldering ruins of the central fortress, the brutal reality of conquest settled in.

In the center of the muddy, ash strewn courtyard, surrounded by a ring of stoic, heavily armored Samatata guards wielding gleaming Hengyuan forged halberds, knelt the surviving elders of the Tripura tribes. Their traditional feathered headdresses were trampled in the mud, and their faces were painted with a mixture of soot, blood, and profound disbelief.

King Samudrasena sat before them on a hastily erected wooden folding chair draped in silk. He looked down at the elders, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He had never conquered anyone so swiftly. The sheer, intoxicating rush of absolute military supremacy was a potent drug, temporarily masking the terrifying reality that he was merely an actor reading lines provided by the hidden masters standing in the command tent just out of sight.

Elder Aranyaka, the oldest and most respected of the tribal leaders, forced his bruised body upright, though he remained on his knees. His eyes burned with the defiant fire of a man whose ancestors had roamed these forests for centuries.

”Samudrasena,” the elder spat, refusing to use the royal title. ”You attack us in the dead of night like a coward. We were your allies. We traded our ivory for your rice. What madness has possessed you to break the ancient pacts of the western forests?”

The King of Samudrasena tightened his grip on the hilt of his mainland steel sword. He remembered the exact, calculating words Xun You had drilled into his head just hours before.

”The era of ancient pacts is over, Aranyaka,” the King declared, his voice carrying a harsh, unyielding resonance that echoed off the surviving bamboo walls. ”The world is changing, and the delta is consolidating its strength. You are no longer allies of Samatata. From this day forward, the Tripura tribes cease to exist as an independent entity. Your lands, your forests, your ivory, and your people belong to my crown.”

A murmur of horrified outrage rippled through the kneeling elders. Aranyaka slammed his bound hands into the mud.

”We will never submit!” the elder roared, his voice cracking with desperation. ”We will bleed you from the shadows! Our hunters will poison your wells! Our women will weave curses into your silk! Give us our independence, and we will swear an oath of non aggression. Try to chain the forest, and you will choke on its vines!”

The King did not flinch. He simply raised a single, dismissive hand.

”Those who cannot see the future have no place in it,” Samudrasena said coldly.

At a subtle gesture from the King, the armored guards stepped forward. Without a word of hesitation, the guards violently seized Elder Aranyaka and the four other elders who had voiced their vocal agreement with his defiance. The old men were dragged away, kicking and screaming curses, immediately thrown into heavily barred wooden prison wagons destined for the deepest, darkest dungeons of Karmanta. They would never see the sun again.

The remaining elders, witnessing the brutal, uncompromising suppression of their leaders, fell silent. The fire of resistance was violently snuffed out by the cold reality of superior steel and ruthless intent.

Behind the scenes, watching from the shadowed entrance of a requisitioned chieftain’s hut, Xun You observed the interaction with a slow, satisfied nod. He turned to the Samatata scribes and magistrates he had brought along, men who had been forcefully trained in Hengyuan bureaucratic efficiency.

”Begin the census immediately,” Xun You ordered softly in the Hengyuan tongue, which the terrified Funan translator quickly relayed in whispered Prakrit to the scribes. ”Strip them of their tribal identifiers. They are to be broken down into administrative blocks of one hundred families. Assign a magistrate to each block. Confiscate all weapons, all ivory stockpiles, and all cotton reserves. The young men of fighting age are to be separated from their families and immediately conscripted into the auxiliary labor battalions. They will haul our supplies, and by doing so, they become complicit in our war machine. Make them subservient to Samatata in name, but structurally bound to the iron laws of Hengyuan.”

The consolidation was a masterpiece of administrative violence. Thousands of proud Tripura tribesmen were seamlessly, ruthlessly absorbed into the Samatata war machine. Their identities were erased by ledgers and ink, their economy hijacked to fuel the impending campaigns.

However, Xun You and Huang Zhong knew that the greatest weapon they currently possessed was the fog of war. The sudden, violent absorption of the Tripura had happened so fast, and the Oriole Agents had so effectively severed all outgoing forest trails, that news of the conquest had not yet leaked to the wider world. The element of surprise was still miraculously intact.

”The blood is still hot, General,” Xun You remarked to Huang Zhong as they reviewed the sprawling map of the region. ”If we stop to digest this meal, the neighboring powers will smell the smoke. We must strike while they are still looking the other way.”

Huang Zhong grinned, his white beard bristling with martial energy. ”Then we march. Give the men two hours of rest. We move on the Harikela hill forts before dusk.”

What followed was a terrifying, unprecedented military blitzkrieg that shattered the established geopolitical reality of the eastern Indian subcontinent.

Leaving a heavily armed garrison behind to oversee the bureaucratic subjugation of Tripura, the massive Samatata army wheeled sharply to the northwest. They moved with a speed and logistical efficiency that the region had never witnessed, their supply trains managed by mathematical precision rather than chaotic foraging.

Before the sun had set the following day, the Samatata vanguard crashed into the Harikela hill kingdom. The Harikela, renowned for their fortified hilltop positions, were completely caught off guard. They assumed the massive dust cloud approaching their borders was a passing monsoon storm until the sky darkened with thousands of iron tipped bolts. The Hengyuan engineered counterweight trebuchets made a mockery of their stone walls, shattering their gates in a matter of hours.

Without pausing for breath, the army divided into three highly mobile columns, perfectly executing the strategic doctrines drilled into them by Huang Zhong.

They swept down into the fertile river valleys, striking a wealthy, independent river chiefdom known as the Suhma. The Suhma river-l barons, awoken in the middle of the night by the deafening roar of armored infantry storming their docks, surrendered before a single sword was drawn, their mercenary armies paralyzed by the sheer, disciplined scale of the attacking force.

The blitz continued for a grueling, blood soaked fortnight. Using the absolute element of surprise, superior mainland steel, and terrifying, synchronized infantry tactics, Samatata took down four distinct kingdoms and tribal confederations in rapid succession.

By the time the fog of war finally lifted, the map had been violently redrawn. In a terrifyingly short span of time, the delta kingdom of Samatata had conquered five independent entities. They had effectively doubled the size of their original territory, absorbing massive populations, countless resources, and strategic choke points.

When the news finally, inevitably breached the Oriole Agents’ blackout and reached the opulent courts of Vanga and Pundravardhana, the reaction was one of sheer, unadulterated panic.

The foreign powers could not comprehend the intelligence reports. Samatata, a kingdom they had long considered a disorganized, culturally arrogant, and militarily stagnant rival, had suddenly moved with the speed of a striking viper and the weight of a falling mountain. They had annexed their neighbors with a ruthless speed efficiency that defied all known regional military doctrines.

Immediately, the war horns sounded across the subcontinent. The naval titan Vanga frantically recalled its fleets from the Bay of Bengal, aggressively deploying tens of thousands of marines along its northern borders. To the west, the chariot riding kingdom of Pundravardhana violently mobilized its elite elephant corps and heavy pike formations, digging deep trenches along the frontier, fully anticipating that they were next on the chopping block of this sudden, mad expansion.

But the attack did not come.

Instead, inside the heavily fortified capital of Karmanta, Samatata took this precious, terrifyingly tense time to relax its offensive posture and consolidate the massive tracts of land and population it had just swallowed.

The logistical nightmare of absorbing five distinct cultures was handled by Xun You with cold, bureaucratic perfection. The wealth of the conquered kingdoms, gold, silver, exotic spices, and thousands of captured horses, poured into the Karmanta treasuries. But the most vital resource they had captured was manpower.

Tens of thousands of defeated soldiers from the conquered kingdoms and tribes were not slaughtered. Under Huang Zhong’s strict, uncompromising orders, they were violently integrated into the Samatata army.

In massive, sprawling training camps built on the newly conquered plains, these foreign prisoners of war were subjected to the exact same grueling, spirit breaking, and rebuilding Hengyuan training protocols. They were stripped of their former allegiances, separated from their countrymen to prevent mutiny, and forced to learn the rigid commands of the heavy infantry shield wall. Any man who resisted was publicly executed, any man who fell in line was fed, armored, and paid. Slowly but surely, the captive armies were assimilated, swelling Samatata’s military might to truly monstrous proportions.

As the military consolidation took root, the diplomatic fallout began.

The major foreign powers, terrified by the sudden disruption of the balance of power, dispatched high level diplomatic envoys to Karmanta. They came not just from Vanga and Pundravardhana, but from the smaller, trembling kingdoms of the interior. They arrived with massive retinues, armed with threats, gold, and indignant demands.

The grand throne room of Karmanta was once again the stage for a monumental clash, but this time, King Samudrasena did not need to feign his arrogance. The sheer, intoxicating reality of his newly doubled kingdom, backed by an army that was currently terrorizing the continent, filled him with genuine, overwhelming pride.

The lead diplomat, a high ranking Brahmanical minister from Pundravardhana named Lord Vashistha, stood before the throne. His face was a mask of barely contained fury and condescension. Beside him stood Admiral Tarun of Vanga, his hand resting menacingly on the hilt of his jewel-encrusted sword.

”King Samudrasena,” Lord Vashistha began, his voice echoing in the grand hall, devoid of the usual flowery pleasantries. ”The actions of your armies over the past month are a catastrophic violation of the sacred, ancient borders of this land. You have swallowed five sovereign realms like a starving beast. You have disrupted the trade routes, displaced thousands, and threatened the stability of the entire eastern world.”
