...

The silence that followed was heavy, absolute, and suffocating. The proud warlords of Central Honshu looked at one another, seeing the reflection of their own defeat in each other’s hollow eyes. Broken by the relentless artillery fire, exhausted by the starvation of the siege, and utterly shattered by the knife in the back betrayal of their eastern countrymen, the unbreakable will of the coalition finally snapped. 𝚏𝗋ℯⅇ

The inevitable, agonizing decision was made. There would be no heroic, suicidal last stand. There would be no songs sung of their defiance. They would lay down their arms.

The following morning, the terrifying, rhythmic thunder of the Hengyuan artillery suddenly ceased.

The abrupt, absolute silence that swept over the Shinano mountains felt heavier, more unnatural than the explosions themselves. Thousands of hardened Hengyuan soldiers, massed in rigid, disciplined formations at the base of the mountain passes with their muskets loaded and their bayonets gleaming, braced themselves, expecting a desperate, suicidal final charge from the trapped defenders.

Instead, a strange, pale flutter caught the eye of the forward scouts.

High upon the jagged, mist-shrouded peak, where the Imperial flags of Shinano had once flown proudly against the gray sky, simple strips of white cloth were awkwardly hoisted into the freezing wind. More white flags appeared along the ridgelines, stretching across the valley bowl like an admission of absolute defeat.

High up on the central parapet, Warlord Suwa himself, his massive frame stripped of his heavy bear pelt armor and his weapons cast aside into the mud, stood tall and raised his bare hands above his head, signaling the unconditional surrender of the Central Honshu coalition.

Inside the command pavilion at the base of the mountain, Supreme Commander Zhang Liao received the report from a grinning scout. The seasoned general did not cheer, he simply nodded slowly, his face a mask of cold, professional satisfaction.

”Accept the surrender,” Zhang Liao commanded, his voice calm and authoritative. ”Send the vanguard companies up the pass. Ensure every native warrior is disarmed, but maintain absolute discipline. There will be no looting, no unprovoked violence, and no quarter given to agitators. The Emperor’s peace will be enforced with an iron hand.”

The process of capturing and disarming the thousands of native warriors was executed with a terrifying, breathtaking level of administrative and military efficiency. Thousands of Hengyuan heavy infantry marched up the winding mountain paths in silent, locked formations. The Shinano and Mikawa warriors, their spirits thoroughly broken, offered no resistance.

They docilely unbuckled their bronze swords, laid down their long bows, and stepped away from their barricades, watching in awe as the massive, orderly tide of the Hengyuan army washed over their supposedly impregnable fortress. Not a single drop of blood was shed during the occupation. The grand mountain stronghold of Shinano fell not to a sword stroke, but to the crushing weight of reality.

As the disarmed soldiers were peacefully herded down the mountain to temporary holding camps where warm rations and clean water awaited them, a calculated display of imperial mercy designed to cement their total subjugation, the high ranking leadership suffered a much harsher fate.

Warlord Suwa, High Priestess Otohime, and the surviving clan leaders, high priests, and proud warlords of Central Honshu were immediately stripped of their fine, ornate armor and their symbols of office. Their ceremonial blades were confiscated by grinning imperial quartermasters. Escorted by heavily armored Ghost Bodyguards, they were marched down the mountain not as honored prisoners of war, but as common criminals, and thrown into deep, heavily guarded, separate prison cells constructed hastily at the edge of the valley.

There, isolated from one another in damp, iron barred cages, they were subjected to relentless, clinical interrogations by the cold, calculating Hengyuan inquisitors and Oriole Agents. Every secret of their treasury locations, every hidden cache of weapons, and every remaining loyalist sympathizer across the central plains was systematically extracted with terrifying precision.

However, for the captive warlords, an even more brutal, uncompromising twist awaited them at the end of their interrogations, a reality that shattered whatever lingering pride they possessed.

They had nurtured secret, desperate hopes that, following the ancient traditions of mainland warfare, the mighty Hengyuan Emperor might spare their lives, recognize their noble lineage, and allow them to rule their ancestral lands as loyal vassals or tributary lords under the Black Dragon’s banner.

They were profoundly, disastrously mistaken.

When the Oriole Agents presented the final interrogation ledgers to Zhang Liao and the four peerless strategists, Guo Jia, Xi Zhicai, Sima Yi, and Jia Kui, the strategists didn’t even bother to look up from their maps.

”Vassals?” Sima Yi let out a cold, humorless chuckle, his fingers tracing the topography of Honshu. ”These men are relics of a rotting age. They broke their own alliances out of greed, and they expected us to reward them with titles? They do not understand the nature of an empire.”

Jia Kui adjusted his scholar’s robes with clinical detachment. ”The four strategists have already finalized the grand, sweeping geopolitical master plan for the entire archipelago. There will be no autonomous native fiefdoms left on Honshu. Every square league of this island must be bound directly to the administrative grid of the capital.”

The master plan was absolute and final. To ensure absolute, centralized, and unbreakable control over Wa, the entire, sprawling domain of Honshu, from the western coastlines to the central Nobi plains and the northern mountains, would eventually be stripped of its indigenous leadership and given directly to a single entity, the Yamato Kingdom.

More specifically, the entire continent of Honshu would be placed under the direct administrative rule of Governor Tarashihiko, operating purely and strictly as a loyal, heavily taxed tributary state of the Hengyuan Dynasty.

The central warlords, the proud clans of Owari, Mikawa, Suruga, and Shinano, were to be completely, permanently erased from history. Their names would not appear in imperial records as rulers, but as conquered rebels.

Their bloodlines would be dispersed, their castles leveled, and their lands reorganized into imperial prefectures. They would not be remembered as honorable lords who fell in battle, but as footnotes, a cautionary tale of what happens when a fractured, primitive civilization stands in the path of the Black Dragon.

While the bureaucratic machinery of the Empire began its cold, calculated work in Central Honshu, Zhang Liao did not waste a single moment resting on his laurels. The war was entering its final, decisive phase, and the grand strategy demanded absolute, lightning-fast execution.

Taking full advantage of the staggering, catastrophic intelligence that the greedy Eastern and Northeastern Honshu coalition had foolishly abandoned their impregnable mountain forts and Kōzuke chokepoints to march out into the open plains of Suruga, only to be utterly annihilated by the Hengyuan heavy cavalry, Zhang Liao immediately set the second half of his master plan into motion.

With the eastern army decisively crushed at Suruga and Warlord Arahabaki dead in the dust, the rugged eastern and northeastern territories of Musashi, Hitachi, Kōzuke, and the deep, freezing forests of Mutsu and Dewa were left completely, desperately defenseless, stripped of their fighting-age men and military leadership.

Zhang Liao smoothly split his massive forces.

Leaving Guo Jia, Xi Zhicai, Sima Yi, and Jia Kui behind in the pacified heartland of Central Honshu to manage the administrative transition, Zhang Liao took personal command of a separate huge contingent consisting of hundreds of thousands of fresh, fully rested, heavily armored Hengyuan soldiers, elite cavalry divisions, and mobile field artillery batteries.

The orders issued by the Deputy Grand General were absolute and unyielding. This massive, unstoppable military juggernaut was ordered to aggressively march out across the open plains, sweep through the conquered eastern territories, and systematically crush any lingering pockets of native resistance.

Following that, they were to push deep into the uncharted, freezing wilderness of the far northeast, subduing the Emishi like tribal confederations of Mutsu and Dewa, securing the massive, untapped deposits of iron sand and gold hidden within their volcanic mountains, and driving the Hengyuan banner all the way to the northernmost tip of the island.

In perfect tandem with this massive eastern offensive, the four peerless strategists immediately swung into action in Central Honshu. Thousands of trained imperial bureaucrats, tax collectors, agricultural experts, and engineers marched into Owari, Mikawa, Suruga, and Shinano.

They seized the massive grain silos, surveyed the rice paddies, established new imperial taxation grids, opened public schools, and began constructing the foundational iron wagonway tracks that would permanently connect the heart of Honshu to the western ports and, eventually, to the capital across the sea.

The old world of warring clans, blood feuds, divine myths, and primitive tribal loyalties was dead, violently buried beneath the thunder of black powder and the cold, unyielding mechanics of imperial law.

Across the entire sprawling expanse of Honshu, from the smoking mountain passes of Shinano to the blood soaked plains of Suruga and the misty forests of the distant northeast, the Black Dragon spread its dark, protective, and inescapable wings.

The Hengyuan Dynasty had conquered the heart of the island, and as the endless columns of iron clad soldiers marched toward the horizon, the complete, the unification of Honshu under Lie Fan was beginning.

The march into the untamed East was meticulously planned to be a grueling, blood soaked campaign of grinding attrition. Deputy Grand General Zhang Liao, a veteran of countless mainland military campaigns, knew the lethal danger of untamed forests and narrow mountain passes. As he led his separate, terrifying contingent of hundreds of thousands of fresh, heavily armored Hengyuan soldiers away from the smoking ruins of Suruga and toward the Kanto plains, the army was braced for absolute hell.

The heavy cavalry rode with their lances lowered, their eyes scanning the dense, ancient tree lines for ambushes. The repeating crossbow divisions marched with their weapons loaded, anticipating the sudden, terrifying shrieks of the Koshi tribal hunters leaping from the freezing snowbanks. The siege engineers meticulously guarded the artillery trains, fully expecting to spend weeks blasting their way through the legendary, choking mountain passes of Kōzuke and Shimotsuke.

But as the massive, unstoppable military juggernaut crossed the borders into Musashi and Hitachi, they were met with an eerie, unsettling reality.

There was no ambush. There was no hail of obsidian tipped arrows. There was no desperate, screaming charge of spearmen.

The brutal conquest of East and Northeast Honshu, a region renowned for its fierce independence and rugged, terrifying warriors, was accomplished at a surprisingly, almost disappointingly fast rate. It was an anticlimax that left the battle hardened Hengyuan veterans confused and restless.

As the armored columns swept across the vast, fertile Kanto plains, they found the massive wooden mountain forts completely abandoned, the gates swinging aimlessly in the cold wind. They marched into the wealthy coastal chiefdoms of Kazusa and Shimōsa, finding the harbors completely devoid of the feared marine raiders.

Even as the vanguard pushed deep into the freezing, incredibly rugged, and heavily forested northernmost reaches of Mutsu and Dewa, a land expected to bleed the invaders for years in brutal guerrilla warfare, they encountered nothing but ghosts.

The explanation was as tragic as it was pathetic. Because the greedy, ambitious leaders of the Eastern Coalition, led by the arrogant Warlord Arahabaki, had foolishly believed they could backstab the central powers and conquer the island, they had made a fatal demographic error.

Blinded by the promise of plunder, they had taken absolutely every single able bodied hunter, every trained warrior, every peasant militia, and every boy strong enough to hold a spear with them to the plains of Suruga.

And at Suruga, Zhang Liao’s heavy cavalry and grapeshot had turned that entire generation of eastern men into a bloody smear on the grass.

There was literally no military power left in the entire eastern half of the island to stop the Hengyuan Army. There was no one left to even buy a little bit of time, let alone mount a sustained guerrilla resistance.

As Zhang Liao rode into the grand, empty capital of Musashi, he looked down at the weeping elders, the terrified women, and the starving children who knelt in the mud before his armored warhorse. The once-proud eastern plains had been entirely hollowed out by the sheer, unadulterated greed of their own warlords.

Without firing a single arrow, without a single Hengyuan soldier falling in combat, the army simply marched in and planted the black and gold banners of the Dragon Throne. Imperial quartermasters immediately went to work, excitedly cataloging and capturing massive, entirely untapped resources.

They seized the massive gold deposits and iron sand mines hidden deep within the freezing mountains of Mutsu, resources the primitive native hunters had barely utilized, but which would now infinitely fuel the Hengyuan industrial war machine. The east did not fall; it simply collapsed under the weight of its own hollow hubris.

Meanwhile, back in the war torn heart of the island, Central Honshu was undergoing a transformation so profound and rapid it defied the natural laws of conquest.

The fires of Owari and Mikawa were barely extinguished, and the ash had not yet settled in the Shinano mountain passes, but the region was already being politically and culturally consolidated at an incredibly fast rate. This was not a chaotic military occupation, it was a surgical, bureaucratic masterclass.

Because the four peerless strategists, Guo Jia, Xi Zhicai, Sima Yi, and Jia Kui, had meticulously made sure that the heavy bureaucratic foundation for the consolidation was already perfectly laid out long before the first cannon was ever fired, the transition from a chaotic tribal battlefield to an ordered Hengyuan province was remarkably smooth and efficient.

Thousands of trained imperial bureaucrats, clad in pristine robes and carrying heavy wooden abacuses, marched in right behind the vanguard infantry. They didn’t just occupy the lands, they aggressively reformatted them.

Jia Kui oversaw the immediate dissolution of the ancient clan borders, carving the central plains into neat, highly organized imperial prefectures. Sima Yi ruthlessly installed a massive network of magistrates, establishing new, complex taxation grids over the massive rice paddies of the Nobi plain, ensuring that every grain harvested was accounted for by the imperial treasury

. Xi Zhicai managed the logistics of pacification, opening massive public granaries to feed the starving, displaced native populations, instantly buying the absolute, tearful loyalty of the commoners who had been abused by their warlords for centuries.

And Guo Jia, ensuring the cultural chains were broken, ordered the immediate construction of public schools in every major settlement, mandating the teaching of the mainland language and Hengyuan law.

Simultaneously, thousands of military engineers began blasting through the foothills, constructing the foundational, heavy iron wagonway tracks that would permanently connect the heart of Honshu to the western ports, forever binding the island’s geography to the will of the Emperor. The old world of divine myths and primitive tribal loyalties was dead, violently but cleanly replaced by the cold, unyielding, and incredibly prosperous mechanics of imperial law.

Thousands of miles away, far removed from the freezing winds of Honshu and the smoke of conquest, the mainland capital of Xiapi basked in the golden, peaceful light of a prosperous spring morning.

Inside the grand, heavily guarded sanctuary of his imperial study, Lie Fan sat behind his massive ebony desk. The room smelled of fine ink, old parchment, and the subtle, sharp scent of blooming plum blossoms drifting through the open lattice windows.

He was currently reviewing a towering stack of domestic reports when the heavy wooden doors were opened by his elite Yellow Ghost Bodyguards. His Oriole Ganets at this time entered, their faces glowing with a profound, triumphant excitement.

They bowed deeply, presenting a sealed, heavy silk ledger directly to the Emperor.

Lie Fan broke the seal and read the immaculate calligraphy. A slow, genuinely thrilled smile spread across his face.

The top secret and highly classified production of the designed flintlocks and heavy, bone shattering blunderbusses had officially reached a monumental milestone. Working day and night in the blazing heat of the secured factories, the dedicated Hengyuan gunsmiths had finally produced the massive quota needed to fully equip twenty thousand elite soldiers.

Twenty thousand flawless, weather resistant firearms, complete with standardized iron ramrods, waterproof powder flasks, and high-tension firing mechanisms, were now sitting in heavily guarded imperial armories, ready to change the very nature of human warfare.

Hearing this, Lie Fan did not hesitate. The era of the sword was drawing to a rapid close, and he intended to be the one holding the gun.

He immediately issued a flurry of absolute, unquestionable imperial decrees. He summoned Zhuge Liang, the brilliant Minister of Personnel, who had spent the last several months quietly and meticulously filtering the central army for the most disciplined, psychologically unbreakable veterans.

”The iron is forged, Kongming,” Lie Fan commanded, his eyes burning with visionary fire as Zhuge Liang bowed before the desk. ”The time for secrecy in the shadows is over. Swiftly gather the twenty thousand handpicked personnel. Move them to the hidden, expanded training camps in the western valleys. Begin the massive, live fire military training immediately. I want them drilling volley fire until they can reload in their sleep while deafened by thunder.”

Zhuge Liang’s eyes gleamed with absolute understanding. ”It shall be done, Your Majesty. When they march, the earth will shake not with boots, but with the wrath of the heavens.”

Simultaneously, Lie Fan strictly commanded Liu Ye, the genius Minister of Work. ”This is merely the vanguard,” the Emperor told the master engineer. ”Massively increase the relentless production of these weapons. Double the foundries. Triple the shifts. Furthermore, scale up the alchemical production of the volatile black powder ammos. We are not just arming a battalion, we are preparing for a total, sweeping military overhaul of the entire Hengyuan Dynasty.”

After handling those heavy imperial matters, the Emperor dismissed his ministers. The weight of the crown was immense, a constant, crushing pressure of logistics, warfare, and statecraft. But Lie Fan was not just an emperor, he was a man who deeply cherished the world he was building. Leaving the quiet intensity of his study, Lie Fan walked out into the breathtaking, sprawling royal gardens of the inner palace.
