...

In the staging grounds of Pundravardhana, the elite chariot corps found themselves grounded. During a massive troop muster, hundreds of the heavy wooden axles on their war chariots inexplicably cracked and splintered under the weight of the armor. The Oriole Agents had systematically infiltrated the lumber yards weeks prior, subtly painting the axles with a highly corrosive, deeply penetrating acid developed in the Imperial Workshop by Himiko and Yue Ying.

Messages between the coalition generals were intercepted, subtly altered by master forgers, and sent along, causing massive delays and miscommunications regarding rallying points. Food stores in the border forts were tainted with slow acting purgatives, rendering thousands of coalition soldiers bedridden and incapable of marching.

While the coalition was stumbling, choking on its own severed supply lines and internal paranoia, Samatata was growing exponentially.

Bolstered by the influx of soldiers from the five conquered territories, and heavily reinforced by the auxiliary forces of the minor kingdoms that had surrendered to the ultimatum, the Samatata army swelled to a terrifying ninety thousand men. They were now a monolithic, heavily armored force that mathematically rivaled the combined might of the paralyzed coalition.

Xun You, however, had absolutely no intention of letting that massive army sit idle and grow fat on garrison duty.

”The coalition is bleeding internally, but they will eventually recover,” Xun You instructed King Samudrasena and his native generals. ”We must press the advantage. The minor kingdoms and tribes that rejected our ultimatum and shamed the crown cannot be allowed to exist. They are a disease on our borders. We will conquer them now, before the coalition can march to their aid.”

The goal was deeply multi layered. By attacking the defiant states, Samatata would project an aura of absolute, unstoppable momentum. More importantly, they would forcibly incorporate even more territory, seize vital agricultural resources, and conscript even more manpower, feeding the native soldiers into the Hengyuan meat grinder to be utilized in the impending, apocalyptic clash against the main coalition armies.

The hammer fell with ruthless, mechanical precision.

The Samatata heavy infantry, now a veteran force confident in their mainland steel, marched against the defiant northern hill tribes and the independent river kingdoms.

It was not a war, it was an industrial harvest.

The defiant states fought with incredible, desperate bravery, but bravery meant absolutely nothing against Hengyuan tactical doctrine. When a defiant river king attempted to hold a narrow valley pass using a massive force of native archers, the Samatata army did not charge blindly. Under Huang Zhong’s proxy orders, they deployed the counterweight trebuchets, systematically bombarding the valley walls until the resulting rockslides buried the defenders alive.

When a fortified city state refused to open its gates, the Samatata forces formed the impenetrable testudo shield formations, shrugging off boiling oil and arrows as they methodically battered the gates to splinters using iron capped rams.

The defiant states were crushed one by one, their lands annexed, their wealth plundered, and their surviving men violently drafted into the ever expanding Samatata war machine. The delta was drowning in blood and iron, and King Samudrasena’s ”ancient empire” was rapidly becoming a terrifying reality.

However, a fire of this magnitude could not burn without attracting the attention of wolves in the distant mountains.

Far to the northwest, beyond the fertile plains of the Ganges, the towering, snow capped peaks of the Hindu Kush cast long shadows over the sprawling, fiercely powerful Kushan Empire (the Guishuang).

The Kushan Emperor, sitting on his throne in the grand capital of Peshawar, ruled a massive, cosmopolitan empire that stretched from Central Asia deep into the Indian subcontinent. They were a true superpower, commanding heavily armored cataphract cavalry, legions of veteran infantry, and immense wealth generated by their control of the overland Silk Road.

For years, the Kushans had viewed the distant, squabbling kingdoms of the eastern delta as highly fractured, irrelevant backwaters, useful only for the occasional exotic trade goods.

But the sudden, explosive chaos, the rapid unification of Samatata, and the massive, unprecedented mobilization of ninety thousand men in the delta had finally triggered the Kushan intelligence network.

Deep in the humid jungles bordering the newly expanded Samatata territories, a small, highly elite unit of Kushan scouts lay perfectly still in the dense underbrush.

These were not standard soldiers. They were hardened, veteran mountain stalkers, clad in light scale armor, their faces painted with mud. They had been sent on a highly classified mission by the Kushan high command: observe the conflict, determine exactly how Samatata had suddenly become so powerful, and evaluate if the eventual winner of this regional war would pose a legitimate threat to the eastern borders of the Kushan Empire.

The lead scout, a scarred veteran named Kanishka, adjusted his grip on his composite bow as he looked down into the valley below.

He was watching a Samatata subjugation force marching back from a freshly conquered city-state. Kanishka’s eyes narrowed, his breath catching slightly in his throat.

He had expected to see a disorganized, victorious mob of delta warriors, laden with loot and breaking formation. Instead, he saw a terrifying, monolithic column of dark iron.

The Samatata soldiers were marching in absolute, dead silence. Their interlocking iron scale armor was uniform and of a quality that rivaled the finest Kushan smiths. But what truly sent a chill down Kanishka’s spine was their discipline. They moved in perfect, rigid squares. Their spears were held at the exact same angle. They were utilizing a complex system of colored flags for communication, rather than shouting orders.

”By the gods,” one of the younger scouts whispered beside him, his eyes wide. ”They do not march like Indians. They march like the legions of the distant east. They march like a machine.” ℴ𝗆

Kanishka slowly pulled out a small, leather bound journal and a charcoal stick. His hand, which had remained steady during countless skirmishes against mountain bandits, trembled slightly as he began to sketch the interlocking shield formations and the heavy, mechanical repeating crossbows slung over the soldiers’ backs.

He did not know the name Xun You. He did not know the name Huang Zhong. And he certainly did not know that Lie Fan was pulling the strings from thousands of miles away.

But as a veteran of countless wars, Kanishka instantly recognized the terrifying truth. Samudrasena was not a military genius. This level of logistical perfection and metallurgical superiority could not be birthed overnight in the swamps. Someone else, someone incredibly powerful, highly advanced, and utterly ruthless, was arming and training these men.

”We do not look for weaknesses to exploit anymore,” Kanishka whispered to his men, his eyes fixed on the gleaming Hengyuan steel marching below. ”We write the report. We ride for Peshawar tonight without stopping.”

”What do we tell the Emperor?” the young scout asked nervously.

”We tell him,” Kanishka replied, his voice grave, ”that a new superpower is being born in the eastern mud. And if we do not prepare our borders now, whoever is controlling that army will not stop until they reach our mountains.”

The relentless, mechanical march of the Samatata army across the delta was a masterclass in asymmetrical warfare, a terrifying testament to what happened when ancient, tribal battlegrounds were suddenly injected with the cold, industrialized military doctrines of the Hengyuan Dynasty.

Over the ensuing months, the remaining independent enclaves, minor chiefdoms, and defiant river lords that stubbornly clung to their autonomy around Samatata’s continuously expanding borders were systematically wiped from the face of the earth.

There was no grand, climactic final stand for these minor states. They were simply swallowed, ground down by a military apparatus that did not sleep, did not break formation, and did not negotiate.

Huang Zhong’s tactical brilliance, executed through his proxy native commanders, turned the dense jungles and winding rivers into a slaughterhouse. When the defiant Naga worshipping tribes of the eastern bogs attempted to trap the Samatata vanguard in a flooded marshland, they expected the heavily armored infantry to sink and drown.

Instead, under Xun You’s logistical foresight, the army deployed massive, pre fabricated bamboo pontoon bridges, rapidly assembled by the auxiliary labor corps. The Samatata heavy infantry crossed the bogs without wetting their knees, trapping the ambushers in their own swamps and shredding them with repeating crossbow fire.

When a coalition of wealthy merchant princes attempted to block the primary trade rivers with a massive armada of chained galleys, they found themselves facing Hengyuan counterweight trebuchets mounted on flat bottomed barges, hurling ceramic pots of highly flammable Greek fire like naphtha, a lesser, non gunpowder incendiary crafted by the Imperial Workshop specifically for this theater. The river burned, and the merchant princes surrendered before the sun set.

City by city, tribe by tribe, the defiant states were crushed. Samatata’s borders pushed outward like a spilled bottle of ink, staining the map with blood and iron, until they finally, abruptly halted.

They had reached the absolute edge of the Vanga and Pundravardhana coalition domain. The mighty Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers formed a natural, sprawling boundary, and on the opposite banks, the massive, unified armies of the two rival superpowers were desperately digging trenches and sharpening pikes.

Xun You did not order the crossing.

”The snake must digest the rat before it can strike at the boar,” Xun You stated calmly, standing on a high bluff overlooking the sprawling, newly established frontline camps.

The order was given to halt, and the monumental, exhausting process of consolidation began immediately.

Samatata had tripled in size. The sheer logistical nightmare of managing such a vast, newly conquered territory would have collapsed any standard Indian kingdom under the weight of rebellions and famine. But Xun You was not a standard administrator, he was a peerless intellect of the Hengyuan Dynasty.

Operating from a heavily fortified command tent, Xun You orchestrated a bureaucratic miracle. He immediately ordered the complete dismantling of all captured tribal leadership structures. The surviving warriors from the conquered domains were torn away from their families and their native commanders. They were stripped of their regional identities and violently integrated into the Samatata military machine. To prevent mutiny, these men were deliberately mixed into squads with veterans from Karmanta, ensuring that no two men from the same conquered village slept in the same tent.

The agricultural resources of the fallen kingdoms were ruthlessly audited. Grain was seized from the wealthy merchant estates and redistributed to the newly established military granaries, securing the army’s food supply for the impending total war. The captured iron mines and cotton fields were immediately put to work, staffed by the captured nobles who were reduced to penal laborers.

Under this draconian, efficient integration, the Samatata army swelled to an unfathomable size. The continuous influx of drafted manpower pushed their numbers past the staggering threshold of one hundred thousand men.

Huang Zhong took this raw, massive influx of humanity and threw them into the crucible of Hengyuan discipline.

The training camps along the border became hellish landscapes of sweat, blood, and shouted commands. Huang Zhong, heavily disguised in native armor but carrying his unmistakable, terrifying aura, personally oversaw the drills from the shadows. He enforced a regimen that broke men down to their absolute physical limits and rebuilt them as unthinking cogs in a military machine.

To arm this colossal force, the covert supply lines from the Hengyuan mainland operated at absolute peak capacity. Under the cover of moonless nights, fleets of unmarked, deep water clipper ships arrived at the hidden coastal inlets of Samatata. They offloaded thousands of heavy wooden crates stamped with the Black Dragon seal.

When the native quartermasters pried these crates open, they found endless rows of gleaming, razor sharp mainland dao swords, thousands of suits of interlocking iron scale armor, heavy steel tipped halberds, and the devastating mechanical repeating crossbows. The Hengyuan Dynasty was pouring its industrial might into the delta, arming a proxy force capable of challenging the gods themselves, all while keeping the apocalyptic secrets of gunpowder and steam strictly secured on the mainland.

King Samudrasena, watching his army swell past a hundred thousand heavily armored, perfectly disciplined men, felt a dizzying, terrifying sense of absolute power. He was ruling an empire that mathematically rivaled the greatest ancient legends, completely unaware that he was merely a placeholder, keeping the throne warm for Lie Fan.

While the Samatata juggernaut paused to sharpen its freshly forged blade, the atmosphere across the river border was one of absolute, suffocating panic.

In a massive, heavily fortified stone fortress situated perfectly on the border between Vanga and Pundravardhana, a high level emergency coalition meeting was convened. The grand hall, usually a place of quiet, condescending diplomacy, was now a cauldron of fear, bruised egos, and desperate arguments.

The room was packed with the highest echelons of the eastern subcontinent’s power structure. Dozens of minor kings, tribal chieftains, and influential elders who had fled the Samatata expansion were crowded around the edges of the room, their faces pale and drawn.

In the absolute center of the hall, seated at a massive, circular teak table, were the two men who held the fate of the coalition in their hands.

On the left sat King Devadatta of Vanga. He was a wealthy, arrogant man whose coastal empire had enriched him beyond measure, draped in heavy silks and ropes of flawless ocean pearls. Flanking him was his top military commander, Admiral Tarun.

On the right sat King Shashanka of Pundravardhana. He was a harder, more martial ruler, his skin tanned by the sun of the northern plains, wearing a breastplate of polished bronze. Beside him stood the furious, calculating Lord Vashistha.

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a halberd. While they had spent the last few months desperately trying to coordinate their forces, Samatata had moved with a speed that defied logic.

”They have over one hundred thousand men,” Lord Vashistha finally spoke, his voice trembling slightly as he dropped a heavy parchment scout report onto the center of the table. ”They have tripled their territory. Our spies report that their soldiers are wearing armor of a quality we cannot replicate, and wielding crossbows that fire without reloading. They are no longer a kingdom, Your Majesties. They are a plague.”

King Devadatta of Vanga slammed his jeweled fist onto the table, his face flushed. ”How did this happen?! How does a swamp king like Samudrasena conjure a hundred thousand elite soldiers and mainland steel from thin air? Our blockade was supposed to starve them!”

”Your blockade was full of holes, Devadatta,” King Shashanka of Pundravardhana sneered, his eyes narrowing. ”Your galleys were too busy protecting your merchant ships to actually patrol the deep inlets. They are being supplied by someone. Someone with deep pockets and incredible foundries.”

”Do not lecture me on military failures, Shashanka!” King Devadatta roared back. ”Where were your vaunted chariot charges when they swallowed the Suhma valleys? You sat behind your trenches and watched them grow!”

”Enough!” Admiral Tarun shouted, stepping between the two furious monarchs. ”We are not here to debate the past! The beast is at our gates. The Samatata army is camped just across the river. Combined, our coalition forces number ninety five thousand. We are mathematically outnumbered, our troops are terrified of the rumors, and our supply lines are already straining.”

The hall fell into a grim, suffocating silence. The reality of their situation was a crushing weight. They had lost the numerical advantage, and the qualitative advantage of their armor and weapons had been entirely eclipsed.

It was King Devadatta who finally broke the silence, uttering the words that had been dangerously whispering through the dark corners of the Vanga court for weeks.

”We cannot win this alone,” King Devadatta stated, his voice dropping to a harsh, pragmatic whisper. He looked across the table, his eyes locking with Shashanka’s. ”We must swallow our pride. We must send immediate envoys to the northwest. We must ask the Kushan Empire for military intervention.”

The hall erupted.

Half the minor kings and chieftains gasped in horror, while the other half nodded in desperate, terrified agreement. Two distinct, deeply entrenched camps instantly formed within the coalition.

”Are you insane?!” King Shashanka roared, leaping to his feet, his bronze armor clattering. ”Invite the Kushans?! You would invite the Emperor of Peshawar across the Ganges?! They are a leviathan! If their cataphracts ride into our lands to ’save’ us, they will never leave!”

”And if we do nothing, Samudrasena will mount our heads on spikes by the end of the month!” King Devadatta yelled back, standing up to meet his rival eye to eye. ”The Kushans are greedy, yes! But they can be reasoned with! We can offer them massive trade concessions. We can offer them a decade of heavy tribute. We can cede them the northern mountain passes. It is a heavy price, but it is better to be a living, breathing vassal to a distant Emperor than to be utterly annihilated by a mad dog on our borders!”

”You speak like a merchant haggling over his own life!” Lord Vashistha spat, his face contorted in absolute disgust. ”The Kushan Empire views us as dirt! Once their armies are inside our borders, they will strip us of our crowns and replace us with their own satraps. We trade one tyrant for a far more powerful, entrenched one! We lose our sovereignty forever!”

Admiral Tarun slammed his hands on the table. ”We have already lost our sovereignty! Look at the map! Samatata holds half the eastern world! If we do not get the Kushan heavy cavalry to break their shield walls, our ninety five thousand men will be slaughtered in the mud! I have seen the reports of their trebuchets. Our stone forts will not hold them. We need an empire to fight an empire!”
